MILL CREEK 20, PEACHTREE RIDGE 10

Visiting Mill Creek spotted Peachtree Ridge 10 points Friday night, then scored three times consecutively to record an important Region 7-AAAAAA victory, 20-10.

The Hawks (3-1) protected the win with Gary Holness’ interception with 10 seconds left and stayed in contention in region at 2-0.

The win avenged Peachtree Ridge’s 35-20 victory last season and narrowed the Lions’ lead in the teams’ series to 4-3. Importantly, the victory gave the Hawks momentum for next week’s biggest region contest so far, against undefeated region leader Norcross at home.

“Being 2-0 instead of 1-1 is huge,” Hawks coach Shannon Jarvis said. “We knew we had to be prepared for this one.”

Jarvis likes the pace of his team’s play half way through the season. After beating Dacula and losing to Brookwood in non-region matchups, the Hawks now have beaten Mountain View (49-0) and the Lions in region.

“I like the energy we’re playing with,” he said. “We’re playing with a lot of speed and passion.”

Mill Creek ran only about a third the plays Peachtree Ridge (1-3, 1-1) did in the first half, and if not for the Lions’ slew of penalties, might have trailed by more than 10-0 at intermission. The Hawks didn’t gain a first down until DeVozea Felton caught a 10-yard pass with 59 seconds left in the half. The Hawks made the first of two interceptions late in the first quarter, but punted every time they possessed the ball in the first half.

In contrast, Peachtree Ridge needed little time to go up 7-0. Joe Horn’s 12-yard catch on fourth-and-8 kept the game’s opening 71-yard drive alive and led to his 20-yard touchdown catch with 8:48 left in the first quarter. The Lions drove another 77 yards in the second quarter and built their halftime edge on Connor Rouleau’s 45-yard field goal 6:05 left in the half.

Mill Creek came out noticeably revived in the second half, driving 93 yards and pulling within 10-7 on Daniel David’s 39-yard pass to Michael Cheeks less than three minutes into the third quarter. Jin Han’s 21-yard scoring reception from David put the Hawks up 13-10 with 10:29 remaining, and Jacorey Lewis’ 47-yard touchdown run gave the Hawks their final margin.

Jacorey Lewis is a big time running back in this state. He’s been making plays most of his career and early on this season he is showing he is an important factor to the Mill Creek team

Peachtree Ridge is ____ . I feel a little for sorry for the coach and for there players (SOME of the players). Are there any parents that are more delusional or arrogant/obnoxious than Peachtree Ridge parents? I doubt it. I’m sure this coach is seeing why all of there coaches take off after a couple of years.
