The Georgia High School Association, with the help of MaxPreps, has released the first Class A points standings this week.
For the first time, the GHSA is holding separate state championships for Class A public and private schools. Each division will hold a 16-team playoff to determine its champion. Teams will be seeded 1-16 based on a points system, with region champions getting the highest seeds.
After three weeks, the leaders are Greenville for public schools and Holy Innocents’ for private schools.
Each week, teams receive: a) 10 points for a victory, five points for a tie and no points for a loss; b) two bonus points for each classification higher than Class A in which the opponents plays – two points for AA, four points for AAA, etc.; c) additional points using this formula – opponents’ winning percentage x 10. The points are then totaled for the season and divided by the number of games played.
Here how the system works, using Holy Innocents’ as an example. The Golden Bears, who have a power ranking of 19.33, have played Lakeside (Atlanta), Wesleyan and Riverwood.
*Lakeside game – 23 points (10 for the victory, 8 for playing a AAAAA school, 5 for Lakeside’s winning percentage times 10)
*Wesleyan game – 17 points (10 for the victory, 2 for playing a AA school, 5 for Wesleyan’s winning percentage times 10)
*Riverwood game – 18 points (0 for the loss, 8 for playing a AAAAA school, 10 for Riverwood’s winning percentage times 10)
That gives Holy Innocents’ 58 total points. Divide that number by three games played to get a final power ranking of 19.33.

Thanks for the update & the power rankings ( VERY INTERESTING ) … BUT … right now these numbers really don’t mean a thing to what teams are for REAL and not. I promise all of us Class A fans, Prince Ave Christian ( #15 Private ) & Wilcox Co ( #12 Public ) will be ranked a lot higher at season’s end. It’s way to early to get really excited, one way or the other, about these numbers right now.
