Predictions: Expect Lassiter, Griffin, North Gwinnett to win top-10 showdowns

Sixteen of the state’s 60 ranked teams lost last week, and more will fall this weekend as 10 games involve ranked teams playing each other. Look for Lassiter and quarterback Eddie Printz to be too much for Kell’s talented defense in a Cobb County battle, and expect Griffin to continue its dominance of Jonesboro in a great subregion opener. I’m also going with North Gwinnett, Colquitt County, Peach County, Thomas County Central, Marist, Calhoun, St. Pius and Wilcox County in the other top-10 showdowns.

And congratulations go out to Blake Davis of Bonaire, who was last week’s winner in the High School Football Pickoff contest. Davis was the only contestant to correctly pick the winner in 13 of 15 games. Click here to sign up and participate in this week’s contest.

Last week: 137-42 (.765); Overall: 296-102 (.744)

Excellent pick having Peach County over Warner Robins…Though Warner Robins will definately bring the heat, I don’t think it will be close. Go Trojans!

Druid Hills is on their way to the playoffs. Largest jump in the state. Only school in Dekalb to play in the largest class. Could finish 3rd or maybe even 2nd in region 2-AAAAAA considering what the rest of the region is looking like at this time. They gave Chamblee all they could handle and almost won if not for some questionable play calls from the coaching staff.

North Gwinnett needs to be commended for their early play but Norsross wins because they are just the better team. 7AAAAAA will see a change in top teams Norcross, North, Millcreek are the top three and who knows about fourth. Won’t really make a difference because number four would play Grayson in the first round.

I watch the North Gwinnett and Stephenson pre-season game and I didn’t see much from either team other than Stephenson has a lot of players and are poorly coached. I don’t see North Gwinnett 2012 team during that well.

Whats the problem at Mill Creek? They appear to have a solid youth program, a large enrollment, community support, nice facilities. Every year i expect them to take a step up and compete and they never do.

I’m not sure i agree with you on Norcross over North. I think both teams are good but North’s QB seems to be a real “gamer”, and i read that Kamara has a bad ankle.

Looking forward to another Raider win tommorrow night as E.P. will host Paulding Co. at the “Boneyard”. Look for Thomas, Neal and the rest of Raiders to be running all over the P.C. d.

@ sportsnut

Druid Hills & Playoffs? we talking about playoffs? really? I dont think beating Clarkston constitutes printing up playoff tickets. Sorry dont see it happening this year. Sure they are improved from past years and yeah its a weak region, but I think the Newton Co. schools and maybe Luella will be the other playoff qualifiers out of 6A Region 2.

Think this is the week the formally Mighty Astros put that losing streatk to bed. Whats is been 3 or 4 years since they won a game. Man have times have changed.

@lew roberts. N cobb was vastly improved this summer in the 7 on 7’s. Would be a great early Christmas present for N cobb to take that win!

I look forward to seeing North Gwinnett vs. Norcross this friday night. Michael Haynes, the North Gwinnett QB, is probably the best all-around uncommitted senior QB in the state, if not the whole southeast. Joseph Wilber, Norcross QB, is also very talented and uncommitted. I hope a lot of college scouts get to see this game in person or on TV to pick up one of these great QBs or many of the other talented athletes at North Gwinnett or Norcross.

As far as making predictions, North’s defense is outstanding, one of the elite in the state, and will put all kinds of pressure on the Norcross offense. Even with Kamara healthy, I would predict a NG win by two or three scores. With Kamara limping, I think NG wins by three or more scores. Haynes puts up 300-350 yards combined passing and rushing, Wilber gets 150-200.

Alpharetta vs. Lovejoy will also be a fun game. Dobbs at Alpharetta will put up good numbers and keep it close, but I don’t think Alpharetta’s D can contain Lovejoy at all. I predict a high scoring affair with Lovejoy coming out on top, probably 42-28.

Lassiter and Kell will be a whole lot closer than many people think. Kell beat Lassiter in a few of the 7 on 7’s and looks even better in the real deal. I had Lassiter as overrated until they blasted Hillgrove last week. Still, I’ll take Kell in an upset by a field goal, 31-28.

North Cobb will do well against Walton offensively. But I don’t think they have an answer for the Walton rushing game. So I’ll take Walton 35-21. But North Cobb is the real deal and will be a factor this season.

Is that a misprint? Double-check that.

Stephens County should have the best team in the state this year. It reminds me of when I played for them and my time at BAMA. Good team and good coach. Not to much for the some fans to get drunk and hollar.

I was at the Northside (Warner Robins) vs. Peach County scrimmage game when half of the population of Fort Valley, GA traveled to historic McConnell-Talbert Stadium to witness the Trojans get exposed. It should be noted that Peach County struggled against Houston County’s Perry HS in Week 1.

Northside 35, Peach County 3 – 2nd quarter, before NSWR Head Coach Kevin Kinsler called off the dogs at halftime. FYI: Warner Robins HS is better than that. Expect a cruel dose of reality to set in across all of Ft. Valley on Friday night. Warner Robins 24, Peach County 14.

North Cobb over vastly overated Walton. The Walton defense is one of the worst in 6A. It will probably be a shootout. Put 9 in the box and make that stiff QB(what were you thinking Nick Saban) beat you. Watch the shady transfers/recruting Coach Hidalgo(see Milton Basketball)

I think Kell-Lassiter is very intriguing. With all of the Printz news that broke today/last night, that could mean Lassiter is extremely focused or a little off their game. Kell looked a little unsettled in their game last week against Woodstock and Lassiter blitzed Sprayberry. Kell could have been rusty from the bye week or were looking ahead to this week, but if they play like they did last week, they will get run out of the stadium.

What happened in 7 on 7 over the summer I don’t put much stock in to. It is good for teams (offense) to get some chemistry going and get comfortable if they haven’t played together much. But it leaves out the d-lines and blitzing capabilities of a lot of teams and from Lassiter’s first 2 games, that front on defense has caused some absolute havoc for their opponents.

Kell has what is probably the best secondary in Georgia, maybe the region. Like I said in another post in a different blog, if Kell can get a defensive TD early I think they can beat Lassiter because that could force Lassiter into a catch-up mode.

However, I am not sure the Kell offense is good enough/diverse enough if they get down early to come back. I think Lassiter takes it by 7 or so, but being a huge rivalry game and not playing in 3 years, anything can definitely happen. Hoping I can make it up to The Frank to watch the game.

Class A Fans …. give me your take on the Wilcox / Dooly game !! Should be a great match up with Wilcox Co QB Mikail Grace & Dooly Co DT Montravius Adams going at each other all night. TWO STUDS !! …. just my opinion, but I think Wilcox has just a little more overall talent than Dooly … I’m going 27-14 Wilcox.

@ Jimbb…I know we never see I eye to eye, but I agree Norcross looks better on paper. However, that is always the case and it still doesn’t matter. I don’t know who will win, but I do know that NG shut down Kamara last year and will do it again.

Zehru yea that is a crazy prediction, although Westside will give them greatest test so far, but sorry no win for you.Saw NSWR in a packed house in Flowery Branch, a team that was 11-2 last year, and hammered them good, we will see!

September 14th, 2012
3:39 am

@blu eagle I too visited a packed house at Flowery Branch and saw a 7-7 game until the start of the second half…NSWR is a well coached team, the QB #12 is a good athlete, the O & D lines are big but slow and they may get exploited if they meet up with a team that’s well coached with speedy athletic lineman and skilled personnel, i.e. the Tigers from Tucker or possibly the Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets

September 14th, 2012
3:53 am

I will go out on a limb and say that Camden will squeak out a win against Beach!!!

September 14th, 2012
8:12 am

@ Dekalb County Guy == Yes, Druid Hills has a chance to make the playoffs. When region play begins, look for the Devils to win. With the region alignment, they only need to beat 3 region opponents to make it. Newton, Alcovy and Rockdale are the teams, along with Morrow that will be fighting for that last spot as I see Luella winning their share of region games. The Clarkston game does not matter. The Chamblee game was a measuring stick and they measured up quite well, 28-21. I am not making any swami-like predictions but watch and see !

Riverdale over Grady, I want what you are smoking…

September 14th, 2012
9:16 am

ummm….. I’m pretty sure it is a far stretch picking Peach County over Warner Robins. Now, don’t get me wrong… I’m a die hard Northside Eagle fan… and typically during regular season want to see WR go down. However, Northside played Peach County for a scrimmage and they really don’t look good at all…. from what I see and hear of the Demons… they are pretty strong this year. I’m sure it will be a good game as Peach County always makes it interesting… However, I strongly believe the Demons will pull this one off.

It’s Great to Be a Northside Eagle!

September 14th, 2012
9:21 am

@zehru52….. Yes, that is VERY CRAZY. LOL…. Keep dreaming. Northside will not be beat by any Macon school…. Macon school athelitics is as horrible as their school system. Also, keep in mind that Northside loves to beat up on Westside given the fact that Coach Robert Davis from WRHS finished his career out there and it is always fun to shut him up.

Prediction: Northside 38 Westside 7

@ Stanley-

Why would Hillgrove over Marietta be a misprint? Is Marietta that much improved? Did not look like it against Newnan, who seemed like a pretty average team outside of their UGA stud. I think it would be a pretty huge upset if Marietta gets past the Hawks tonight. Indians on the horizon next week. These two games will be much bigger tests than the Blue Devils have had so far and will tell us where they stand in the region. I don’t see them winning either of them.

Eagle Dad

I agree Cobb Coach. North Cobb putting 9 in the box sounds like a great idea but T. Jones has shot that approach down impressively the past two games. If North Cobb is able to contain him people will be very very high on the warrior defense. The only team to do so in the past 2 years was Grayson in the title game last year. I will say that should Walton lose him to injury, they would be very limited on offense.

I wish I could be as optimistic as you. I root for all the Dekalb teams and I actually live in the Druid Hills district, but they are in 6A and they were average at best in 3A last year. True the region they are in, is very weak. Outside of Lovejoy, no one else is a “legit” threat in the playoffs. I just think the Newton co. teams have more experience playing big time opponents. I notice the playoff predicton this morning on the power rankings and didnt see Druid Hills in there either. But anything is possible.

To high school high, you must be HIGH. The Walton QB is working with Tyren and a whole new OL. The OL has been battling injuries and illness. He’s 16 of 29 and at least 6 or 7 of those were drops by his new receivers. It happens. And yes, Tyren Jones transferred to Walton. Sorry you are the last to know but he did arrive in January of his sophomore year. He ran really fast for the Walton track team and then ran really fast for the Walton football team. Get over it. Lassiter wishes him well, so what is your problem. Who are the other transfers and recruits you’re talking about?

Heading out to the Walton vs North Cobb but really considered attending the Kell vs Lassiter game instead.

-Agree with earlier poster that Walton’s defense is pretty bad. The issue is they don’t have any defensive speed. North Cobb should be able to score points on them. Tyren Jones really needs some help on offense as he’s a 1 man show IMO. Respect McCleod’s “effort” as a QB but Bama should have recruited Josh Dobbs at Alpharetta instead as McLeod as been ineffective as a senior thus far this season….so I don’t have any illusions of him being a successful QB in the SEC. Kinda leaning towards North Cobb in the upset as Walton’s Defense and their QB have been disappointing thus far in 2012. Jones [even with the great offensive line blocking] can’t beat teams by himself. Really think Walton should give their back-up QB a chance to play as I think he’s better than McLeod.

Lassiter is the “recruiting” hot-bed of Cobb County IMO. Heard others say Kell is as well but I’m not as familiar with their transfers as I know Lassiter has a plethora of transfers that are starting. Kell has a great secondary but not sure they can score enough points to derail Lassiter.

North Gwinnett handles Norcross by 14-21 points. I think Myles Autry making plays in the return game is the only chance Norcross has at the win. Saw Alvin Kamara play in person last week….and I was actually more impressed with Autry. He [Autry] is still slight of build/lean and will need to get stronger for college.

Lovejoy over Alpharetta. Really like Josh Dobbs at QB but Alpharetta plays defense like Arkansas at Big 12 Teams. They let you score so they can get back on the field on offense. That mentality doesn’t win championships. Lovejoy with the “W”.

BamaBornDukie, you really need to get a life that involves something other then openly criticizing high school student athletes. You profess to ‘care’ about these players yet have an obvious hatred towards the Walton QB. Are you being paid to bash him weekly or is it bi-weekly? You’re even worse on the Alabama blogs and it’s really getting old. You have no credibility so just move onto the next unsuspecting 17 year old and start tearing him apart. You’re an adult, too, so that’s especially pathetic. It’s also completely laughable that you act like you ‘discovered’ Tyren Jones for the Alabama program. A 3-year old could’ve picked him out on the field as a special player. Those of us from the East Cobb area have known he was special since his Jr. Wildcat days at Wheeler and continue to make fun of you because you act like you’re the one who found him. You need to get over yourself.

@GoRaiders….I “never” said I discovered Tyren Jones. Posters on Bamaonline give me props for posting his videos on the site at this time last year before he was on the Bama radar. One of the Bama Scouts saw the video and showed to staff. I’ve been evaluating players as a past-time for 13-14 years and the person I began doing this with back in 1999 in Durham, NC is currently a scout for the Patriots and has 2 Super Bowl Rings and he contacts me regularly for my opinion on SEC players . I hopes to be an NFL GM in 5-10years…so I am NOT new to this partner. Something I do as a past-time but very well may be doing soon in a “dual” capacity with a team in the league along with Salary Cap matters.

In terms of players…..I call it like it is. I am not bashing the kid. I’m simply stating the facts as they are played out on the football field. If my above post is bashing….then I’d hate for you to see what is stated about kids at Bama. I don’t think the kid is an SEC QB and I stick by that statement.
