Jeff Haws’ Top 10 List

You all know how much we love high school football here at The List. We really do. On Friday nights during the offseason, we regularly just show up at different high school stadiums, sit in the stands and weep.
But, really, who amongst us couldn’t come up with our own ideas for what we’d change if we were the Grand Master of High School Football?
You know you’ve fantasized about it. That’s what we were doing last week. The premise: Nothing is off the table. Money is not an object. Just make things better.
10. Bigger press boxes
We’re being selfish, you say? No. Of course not. Never. OK, a little. I mean, it would certainly be nice for us to be able to always show up 15 minutes to kickoff, stroll in and grab our reserved (hopefully padded) seat with ample desk space in front of us. And if there was a nice little buffet, all the better. But, to be fair to us (and we always like to be fair to ourselves), press boxes house far more than just us media types. And bigger, nicer boxes would benefit plenty of people who don’t write treatises about the game.
9. Artificial turf everywhere
It’s about far more than just pretty green grass all over. Having this turf, if you can afford the upfront expense, is often a huge money advantage. Little to no maintenance. All sports can use the field the entire year. It can pay for itself over the course of a couple of decades or less. Plus, well, I mean, the green grass really is kind of pretty. Don’t deny it.
8. Bands quiet during play
Look, we have nothing against the great high school bands out there. In fact, we’d buy a high school football band soundtrack if it were available (that’s a good idea on its own, actually). Just not during plays, guys. Let’s allow the boys to play football. The bands can get their spotlight at halftime, during timeouts, stops in play, etc. Love you guys, but let’s watch some football.
7. DeKalb and Atlanta City Schools get their own stadiums
We certainly see the financial savings to a school system sharing stadiums. And, well, you don’t have to pay for maintenance. But there aren’t many coaches or players who wouldn’t pick having their own true home field rather than sharing it with a bunch of other teams. There’s just no replacement for having your own crowd and a stadium you can put your stamp on.
6. Electronic play clock at both ends of the field
It never fails to befuddle us when delay of game is called at these games, given that no one except perhaps the back judge really knows where the clock is at any given moment. Putting in a play clock would make this far more clear for everyone, and it would give us one more thing to watch during a game. Maybe we don’t need the distraction, but we’re all about improving the game anyway.
5. Late-season games start at 7 (or even 6:30)
Is this selfish too? OK, yeah, we don’t want to sit out in the dark cold anymore than we have to in some of these stadiums. But neither do the fans, do they? Let’s keep these late-fall games bathed in as much daylight as possible. Gets people out of the game earlier in the evening, and doesn’t affect the integrity of the game. Would it negate some of the selfishness if we said it would save money on electricity from the lights? But we said money is no object at the beginning. Pay no attention to us.
4. Alternate Finals sites in South and Middle Georgia
Why should the fans and teams of South and Middle Georgia have to drive up here as a reward for making the state finals? I mean, we clearly love Atlanta, but we’re, ya know, here. In a perfect world, the South and Middle Georgia teams that make it that far could have an opportunity to stay closer to home and make our metro-area guys head down their way sometimes. At Georgia Southern? Valdosta State? West Georgia? Just spitballing here.
3. No advertising and/or total revenue sharing
Yes, that would go throughout the state. It’s pretty socialistic, sure, but it could also help balance out the haves and have-nots everywhere. All the money programs collect goes into a pool, and it’s distributed evenly to all the public schools. Private schools go into a separate division. No, it’ll never happen, but it’d be interesting.
2. GHS would be able to seriously investigate recruiting
They occasionally catch a school or have them self report, but it’s typically rather tough for the GHSA to mount a thorough investigation, just due to staff, money and time limitations. Now that we’re taking those out of play, the GHSA can hire all the full-time investigators it needs to keep a close eye on recruiting all over.
1. Use Boddy Dodd Stadium instead of Georgia Dome for Finals
The Georgia Dome is nice, but it’s maybe a little too nice. It’s so cavernous, and it’s indoors. It just seems a little antiseptic for our tastes for what should be a rowdy high school football championship game. Georgia Tech’s stadium would bring weather back into play, and there are 16,000 fewer seats, so there’d be that many fewer empty chairs staring back at us all.
Now it’s your turn … you’re the Grand Poobah of High School Football. What are you changing? What’s high on your priority list? Which ones of our changes make us sound like crazy people? Let us know in the comments here or hit us up on Twitter at @ajcprepsports.

I agree, Bobby Dodd would make a fine high school stadium.

Only No. 1 is a terrible idea, considering how bad the weather can be in mid-December. You must have a short memory, or you needed another idea to make it 10. And you want larger press boxes, but those larger DeKalb/Atlanta press boxes would be eliminated if each school had its own stadium.

“Bands quiet during play” is already the rule — how about we enforce it, Atlanta refs? In fact, here’s a suggestion — get rid of the Atlanta refs and bring in some folks who know the rules and call games fairly.

Negative on the artificial turf everywhere. Football’s a grass sport, and while the artificial turf is nice if you can afford it, there’s still nothing like playing the game on natural turf. Also, in regards to all sports using it year round, most soccer players will tell you that playing on artificial grass suuuuuucks.

Great idea…make us drive to Atlanta to sit outdoors in the cold and rain. Is this blog a joke? Funny stuff for sure.

Jumbotrons with instant replay in all stadiums.

The banning of all the monotenous, poorly recorded, endless loop tapes of rap songs written and performed by students and played for 45 unbearable minutes prior to the start of every game.

The visitor stands, consessions and restroom facilities must be at least as nice as those on the home side.

All seats must be padded stadium seats with back supports

The installation of a system in all bleachers that tasers anyone still standing 30 seconds after anyone yells “Down in front”

Vendors strolling through the stands selling soft drinks and goodies.

A state wide internet based system for buying reserved seating on the visitors side.

A minimum of 500 hours training for game officials and a felony sentence on conviction of favoritism.

Give the officials radio microphones so the fans know the reasonst penalties are called.

The announcers be required to know the names of the visiting team players.

We are not sharing our revenue in Warner Robins with the rest of the state. That really takes the community aspect out of high school football. Did you watch Friday Night Lights? Remember the town trying to run the coach out of town. This is what football is about in programs that have a community base. There is a sense of pride. Having a complete revenue share only works when you have a statewide and very lucrative television contract in place. Of course, that can not happen in your perfect world because you do not want advertisement.

Ask the people at Tucker, who lost a 2 time state championship coach to little Lamar County how that revenue sharing is working in DeKalb County. You usually test a large scale statewide program on a smaller scale. Ask the talented Lamar County (former Tucker HS head coach) coach Frank Stephens how that revenue sharing thing works.

The start of all games needs to be moved BACK to 8 p.m. like things were 20 years ago and how things are in the really great places to play football in this state like Valdosta, Tifton, Thomasville and Rome. Given the travel distances to games and Friday afternoon traffic, it is difficult if not impossible for most fans to get off work, get home, get changed, gather up the family and get to away games by 7:30. Moving the start to 6:30 or 7 would make it impossible. It is called Friday Night Lights for a reason. Start the games at 8 so they actually are played under the lights.

Make visiting teams require their student body at least show up for games, give them some kind of incentive also to yell for the team. It is so disheartening to see an empty visiting side after all these kids work hard to play in a game, it would do them wonders for them to hear some support, C”mon Man!

“Late-season games start at 7″ is horrible. The colder it is when your playing, the better your season has been.

@ Jeff –OBAMA–Haws…

I can only hope you are trying to see if you can stir things up a bit and not really being serious with your comment about “sharing the revenue”…

DeKalb County and City of Atlanta schools not withstanding…High Schools are community based and supported by area businesses and families of the kids attending EACH school! Parents CHOOSE where to locate their families many times based on the quality of the school in a given area and businesses in the area CHOOSE to support booster clubs from specific schools based on these parents in turn supporting their businesses.

WHY would a business in say GRAYSON want monies they gave to their school go to a school in say South Ga. or the reverse…monies gave to a school in Valdosta or Warner Robins end up supporting a school in Paulding County!

The folks at the AJC have spent months now touting the new look, the new Editor, and the new direction the paper was taking…comments like you made Jeff do nothing but show folks the AJC is still the Left Wing Liberal Voice of Metro Atlanta and nothing more!

My thoughts on a couple of items in the list. 1)Agree with WACO fan. Turf is nice to look at but nothing beats a rain soaked grass field. It makes the game even more fun to watch. Tackles that look like Sid Breams slide into home and you get to see who really knows how to hold on to the ball.
2)Ditto on “THE CANNON RULES” comments. This is the U.S.A. this is not a socialist country….yet. If os(b)ama has his way GAME OVER.

I felt the same way about artificial turf until our stadium got it two years ago and we played in a region in which 7 of the other 10 schools also had artificial turf. It makes for a more enjoyable game, virtually eliminates injuries with the modern turf being used now and keeps fields from looking like mush by late October. I am sold.

Nope. Grant Field is Tifway 419 Bermuda grass, not turf. Has not been turf for some time.
