Brooks County coach: Beating Valdosta like winning a state title

Brooks County coach Maurice Freeman relishes having a bye Friday after the events of last week. His Trojans defeated Valdosta 28-14, becoming the first Class AA or smaller school to beat the Wildcats in almost 50 years.

Freemen says he couldn’t blame his players if they were still joyous about the occasion.

‘’If we get lucky enough to win a state title, that would put us with two state titles in one year,’’ Freeman said. “It’s not like beating your big brother, but like beating your uncle. That’s Winnersville, USA, over there. That’s big time.’’

Freeman, who coached his alma mater to a state title in 1994, first got Valdosta on the schedule in 1996. When he returned in 2008, he scheduled Valdosta again beginning in 2010.

Freeman grew up in Brooks County and played football for the Trojans in the 1980s, a decade in which Valdosta won four state titles and two national championships. He said Brooks County didn’t dream of even playing Valdosta in those days, much less beating them.

I had a cousin growing up who played for Valdosta, and he and I used to wrestle and go at it all the time on weekends,’’ he said. “Every now and then he’d beat the stew out of me, and I’d beat the stew out of him. He was third string at Valdosta. I thought Valdosta must be pretty good then.’’

“But we didn’t even think about playing Valdosta in those days. It didn’t even come up.’’

‘’Believe me, I can get the air back out of their heads,’’ Freeman said. “We will continue to get prepared. It was one game. You don’t want to be 3-0 and then 3-7. If we don’t win another game, it’s meaningless. It’s where you stand in the end that matters.’’

Coach Freeman does an excellent job. His teams are tough and disciplined! I didn’t predict the win, but it doesn’t surprise me either. AA and AAAAAA are just a thing that don’t mean much in our area. Good is good!

He out coach my Cats and they had a great game plan so i give credit where credit do. I’m still upset in some of our mental errors and Coach G decision to quit running the ball when our line was pushing them back at the line of scrimmage. I wish the best of luck for Brooks in their region and playoffs.

Clearly this guy has NEVER won a state championship. Beating Valdosta is like beating any other program. I know first hand, watching my alma mater beat Valdosta like a drum. Actually, Valdosta will roll over a little more quickly than other program. Their fanbase will leave “real” early much like the rest of South Georgia’s Region 1 programs (minus Lowndes County). It is front-running at the highest levels. :-)

The entire coaching staff should be fired and forfeit the rest of the season. These coaches and the way the team played is an embarrassment to our school and heritage.
This coach and his 25 assistants are breaking the school system and lose to a AA school? I’m selling or giving away my remaining season tickets.

What’s the big deal? My Vikes have beat them 7 out of the last 8 years including a 57-15 beat down in 09. I laughed so hard my side hurt about the Hammer (Coach Freeman) waltzing into Death Valley and spanking that cat hinney while using about 15 players. lol

@dostabigshow > Excuses excuses excuses. Cat fans have more excuses than Carters has liver pills.
It’s usually the officials that beat you. Your coaches look like a Chineese fire drill on the sideline. Totally lost. Good luck with Crisp this weekend. AA Cook beat them 37-0 last week.

ENR, Actually Coach Freeman has won a state title…..while coaching at Brooks Co, he left and came back. A very serious and committed individual who motivates young men, you should have more respect for those who actually do only what you type about all week.

Congrats Brooks – they played a great game. Old Time Cat you are a freaking idiot – fire the staff? Are you that stupid? THAT is THE reason VHS is in the shape that it is in now. I bet you were one of the fools that wanted O’Brien fired also. Other than Hyder’s untimely death this is the reason we are in the shape we are in now. Gillespie is one f the best coaches in the state of GA. When he leaves it is OFFICIALY over at VHS. Gillespie is coaching his but off to try and bring the Cats back to any semblance of glory. They are not there yet, but they are indeed headed in the right direction. If you fire Gilespie – Valdosta football is DONE – for good! You better wake up and realize what a job this man is doing and how far he has to go to get VHS back to respectability again. Darlington and Tomberlin let it deteriote in 7 years. Rebuilding does not happen overnight. We are headed in the right direction – whether you believe it r not. Fans like you are an embarrassment to VHS and gives us a black eye arund the state because of attitudes like yours displayed. Better yet since you have ALL the answers please go and tell Gillespie face to face how to fix everything that is wrong. I promise you he will listen to you, but you want show up because you don’t hav the gonads to stand face to face and make such comments. Another coward hiding behind a computer screen. Please go support Lowndes – we don’t need your kind. Go Cats!

it is the same way with the vikes , ask grayson, mceachern, camden the list goes on i never made not one excuse about us loosing , brooks beat us and if you are such a viking fan what was you doing at our game. it only took that chineese fire drill coach 1 min 23 seconds to put together 2 touchdowns to win last year. be sure you mark off from work on oct 12

Valdosta is the Notre Dame of Ga. High School football. They have a rich history, but they are not what they use to be and their fans for the most part hasn’t come to grips with it. Beating the wildcats these days is nothing special, there is probably 4 teams in their region that will beat them.

How quickly my Viking neighbors forget the years before coach Milt Miller got to Lowndes and turned their program around. Tomberlin coached at Lowndes and destroyed your program just like he would later do to the CATS program. You talk about front runners? Who ever heard of Lowndes High before 2000? Were any of you Viking bloggers even born in 1980? Also don’t think everybody hasn’t heard the grumblings about how your beloved coach Mac is on the “HOT” seat. We all heara about how Viking nation is crying about the pass defense and the lack of a offensive passing game!!!! Before the Viking nation claims how great you are, remember you haven’t won a state title since 2007, which by my count was 5yrs ago!!!!

@Viking Delight – Lowndes has won 7 of the last 8 games against Valdosta, but what does that bring the all-time series record to? I believe its Like 35-16??? SO LETS ADD UP THE MATH

Soo that means before you guys won 7 in a row, Valdosta had a 34-7 record against you???? Come on man!!!!!!! DON’T WORRY ABOUT WHO OUR COACH IS OR WHO WE LOSE TO. JUST WORRY ABOUT YOUR OWN TEAM!!!

@Viking Delight- ask your coaching staff how Brooks came over their this summer in the 7-0n-7 league and threw the ball all over your Vikings like you had a Boys Club team. Now I know 7-0n-7 doesn’t mean a whole lot, but all the Viking coaches will tell you that Brooks is very talented.

However I do think our coach had some type of “MIND BLUNDER” last week against Brooks, but after last years WINNERSVILLE CLASSIC, we both know that coach MAC has those too!!!!

Eaglefalling; Funny comment coming from a fan of the team whose fans left in masse with over 5 mintues left in the game at the Ga. Dome when Camden beat the wheels off your minor league team for the AAAAA crown. In short don’t call out other folk’s Fans when urs are just as lame or even more so.

Valdosta is probably the fourth or fifth best team in 1 AAAAAA behind Camden, Lowndes, Colquitt & maybe Tift County.

I was shocked at the lost to Brooks, very shocked, I’m reading Drew Jubera’s book on the Cats, Must Win, and he thinks Gillespie is great, so I’ll trust him. I graduated in 1964 and they are still my “Cats.” Goodluck the rest of the season, guys.
