AAAAAA blog: Five questions that deserve an answer from North Gwinnett-Norcross to Kell-Lassiter

Who’s the team to beat in Region 7? No. 9 Norcross travels to No. 5 North Gwinnett in the only AAAAAA game between ranked teams. Norcross allowed only 102 yards of total offense in the 20-0 victory over Parkview last week, but there is concern about all-state RB Alvin Kamara, who has a sprained ankle. North Gwinnett has won Region 7 the past three seasons, beating Norcross each time.

Can Lovejoy or Alpharetta make up for a loss? Both started the season ranked after breakout seasons in 2011, Lovejoy reaching its first state final in AAAA, and Alpharetta winning its first region title. Lovejoy lost to Colquitt County, Alpharetta to Milton. This game at Lovejoy features Alpharetta’s passing game of QB Josh Dobbs (649 yards passing in two games) and WR Carlos Burse against Lovejoy’s attack defense led by Nathaniel Norwood.

How will Eddie Printz do against Kell’s stellar secondary? Not counting Walton, Lassiter and Kell could be Cobb County’s best two teams. Kell, No. 3 in AAAAA, has a secondary of FS Quincy Mauger (committed to Georgia), CB Brendan Langley (South Carolina), CB Jay Moxey (two-year starter) and SS Taylor Henkle (starter since ninth grade). Lassiter, No. 4 in AAAAAA, has AJC Super 11 QB Eddie Printz who is 34-of-48 for 526 yards and six touchdowns.

Who’s Grayson’s top challenger in Region 8? Archer plays at Brookwood on Firday in a game between schools picked to finish second (Brookwood) and third (Archer) in Region 8 by Georgia High School Football Daily. Grayson, ranked No. 1, plays at Parkview, a team looking for its first touchdown against perhaps the state’s best defense. At Brookwood, looks for a run-oriented game. Archer’s Sean Fowler (126 yards) and Ernest Alexander (105 yards) each topped 100 yards in a 27-6 victory over East Coweta last week. Brookwood is led by Jamaal Cole, a former 1,000-yard rusher, but when he was banged up last week, Josh Brown stepped up and ran for 243 yards in a 31-21 victory over Mill Creek.

Is Region 1 ripe for another upset to a smaller school? The biggest upset of last week was Brooks County’s 28-24 victory over Valdosta. ‘’If we get lucky enough to win a state title, that would put us with two state titles in one year,’’ Brooks County coach Maurice Freeman said. Brooks is No. 2 in Class AA. This week, No. 4 Carver-Columbus of AAA plays at Colquitt County, and No. 9 Burke County plays at Coffee. Burke won AAA last season.

6th Question.

How did Valdosta win region 1 last year?

If Kell can get a defensive TD I think they have a good shot at defeating my Trojans. However, it will be interesting to see what hteir offense does against Lassiter’s defense sicne they have got a ton of pressure on the QB and the backfield in general through the first 2 games.

Kell will need all of those guys in the secondary to play well on Friday to cover all of the weapons Lassiter has with their receivers.

No mention of the Marietta vs Hillgrove game on here? This is a big game in determining who will challenge Mceachern for the region 4 championship

NG will shut down Kamara just like last year. Kept him from scoring last year and under 100 yards rushing.

grayram: Great question. Having watched the Cats all last season, my best answer is that Gillespie and co. coached their heads off. Valdosta was the least talented team in Region 1 last year, in my opinion, but won on coaching and hard work, with a QB that didn’t play till game 5. D1 talent is not there this year either, at least not in senior class, but Valdosta will have a say in who wins Region 1.

The jury is still out whether or not Grayson has the best defense in the state. Have to see them against a balanced attack offense. Macheachern did not have it, however they did run the ball rather well. Central was overated.

Valdosta won last year on coaching, they got UP for their games against Lowndes and colquitt …… Colquitts coach cost them the region title…..he was out coached starting with the over time coin flip…..because of his arrogance

Josh Dobbs is a talent. He will be much harder for the Wildcats to deal with than Seagraves was last week. 324 ypg. passing is very good. We will have to get alot of pressure on him and cover well for us to come out on top.

grayram,

IMO, CC came out really flat against Valdosta last year. They didn’t seem pumped up and excited about the game. Valdosta, on the other hand, was. I felt like we thought we had it “in the bag” and didn’t have to work for it.

I kept trying to tell them (from the stands) that they needed to get excited, but, alas, they weren’t listening. They should’ve listened to me!!

@packerchick – Tell ‘em sister! I think how the team feels about the opposition makes a huge difference. We looked past y’all in 2010 and lost. While not looking past us, I felt the Packers were expecting the 2010 Rams and got surprised last year. I’ve seen plenty of teams not worry about their opposition and get their heads handed to them! With teenage boys, they have got to take it serious and be pumped about the game.

AJC,

This is not the first season that a little AA program has beaten programs from South Georgia’s overhyped Region 1. Colquitt County advanced to the state championship after losing to AA Cook HS. These are no upsets. It is simply mediocre football played down there. It is as simple as that. I know that you guys at the AJC romanticize the football down there. However, on one has addressed this simple question.

If South Georgia Region 1 football is soooo good, how can one program player four full seasons down there and go 17-1 against this top tier football? It simply does not add up. Losses to programs like Cook HS and Brooks County HS further bolster my claim that the football down there is slightly above mediocre…that is it! McEachern, Cook HS, Brooks County HS and others simply do not lose against these middle of the road programs. Watch Camden County run the table down there every season. Colquitt County has lost 6 or more games in 3 of the past 5 seasons. It is not top tier football! That is why Valdosta loses to the Brooks Countys of the world. :-)

Miami may have been over rated but Friday night they beat the team that the polls had as the number 4 team in the country. And about Mceachern i don’t think anyone is giving the kid that played QB for them against Grayson enough credit. You can say Graysons D didn’t have its best game or it was the 1st game whatever, that kid executed play after play.

This is the time to really make sure college coaches know who you are. If your a Sophomore or Junior, you must make sure your being proactive about your recruiting and not waiting for college coaches to contact you. If your a Senior and not receiving phone calls, your not being recruited. It has nothing to do with your talent, college coaches just don’t know who you are. Web Star Recruits can help! @highschoolhigh- I agree with grayram. We’ll see how Central fares against Manatee this weekend, who is ranked #1 in 5 polls and see how overrated they are. At the end of the day it is all about the W and not who has the best defense.

grayram…….Question 7 , When if ever will we realize that Georgia football is head and shoulders above the rest…..Nothing against Grayson ,ive been impressed with what Conn has been doing since 08 , but the way Grayson handled the Florida school was no surprise to me, there are 20 plus schools in state better than Central….We need to see that it is no longer needed that Grayson ,Camden ,NG for example schedule these so called marquee games against out of state squads……The Corky Kell could be a showcase for GA high school football if the right schools we’re scheduled…….If the likes of Sandy Creek , Peach County , Northside W.R , Burke for example were part of the Corky Kell . These squads would mop the floor with Kell , NG and give Grayson a good showing.

Georgia High school football is surely playing at very high level. I remember Buford winning some games in Texas a few years ago and i know Georgia teams in the last couple of years have beaten some teams pretty badly from Florida, Illinois, South Carolina, California.
The Corky Kell usually has very good teams playing, it is usually alot of Gwinnett vs Cobb but Camden is a frequent participant and this year Colquitt was there. With Grayson, Noth Gwinnett, Colquitt, Camden, Brookwood, and Walton this year they had at least six teams that are either recent state champions, state runner up or in North’s case playoff regulars.

I’m sure North Warner Robins and Sandy Creek could compete very well. Peach County and Burke i don’t know much about but i’m pretty sure they are small schools that probably woudn’t be able to bring enough people to satisfy the money men. I know that one of those A or AA teams beat Valdosta but i don’t really think Valdosta could have won against any of the teams in the Corky Kell.

I do like the idea of it being a North vs South showcase if it were like Camden, Lowndes, Colquitt.

@Reeze – If we don’t play out of state games, Georgia HS football will either be ignored on the national level or relegated to all-ran status. I’ve been paying more attention to some of the national boards this year and they really don’t give much credence to teams that don’t play OOS. I’m not saying it is right, just that it is. As a rising tide lifts all ships, Ga football as a whole is perceived better when some teams do play OOS opponents and do well.

@ Camden74

how’s it been?? I agree all hype… they’ve yet got ANYTHING to talk (brag) about up north. yea there are a few teams that are pretty good, but as we know, it”ll come out in the wash, which is call the playoffs.

yea, yea Lovejoy in a blog last week makes a statement, what kind of statement do you make with a loss, just sayin… Not bashing, Lovejoy or any team, but where is the power??? IMO grayson will falter and fall, watch for it.

And boy our region is going to be fun…. glad to have ya’ll this year, win or lose. I have watched a few games this year from some of the so called power teams from gthe north, and got to wonder about these rankings, I could do a better job than a lot of them, (probably not)…
for an example I watched the Norcross/Parview game last week, come on man…. I’m predicting that there will be a state champion from the south this year..

And I know I know you would say it is going to be ya’ll and i am saying that it will be us…. but I believe we have a way better chance at it than the teams I have seen that are highly ranked, and it just ain’t there…

I am liking lasssiter’s qb, Prinz he is a gamer, but what else have they got, and Kell a pretty balanced team, should have beat Grayson last year, didn’t lose by but 7-0, and they were in a lower region…
And the question was asked about grayson being challenged within their region and the answer is yes.. Again Bwood handed them the gift last year, and grason won, but it was by 1 (ONE) mistake by Bwood,
