ECI is out in Class A?! Are you kidding me? They lost to the number 6 team in AAA on the road! You guys have no clue whatsoever about Class A public schools. Marion has beaten who? And Aquinas has beaten a very bad East Laurens team and George Walton. Trust me when I say…and remember i am the one who told you Dublin was not good this year….ECI IS one of the Top 10 teams in Class A. Oh and I am not from ECI, just know a little about H.S. Football…especially A & AA

I have never said a word about the rankings before, but i would like to know why Calhoun is still ranked number one after giving up thirty plus points two weeks in a row. The teams they play are never a factor in the playoffs. I’m sorry this just doesn’t make sense to me. They’re an incomplete team, and defense still wins championships in this state. Fitzgerald ranked a little high too, but they’ll get their chance to earn it Saturday.

Just what I was going to say, Lowndes96. I’d have to rank a team which just beat Valdosta ahead of a team with a porous defense.

It’s still early in the year and many teams still have unanswered questions about them. I’m guessing it will take more than some tuff games or poor showings to change the rankings for now.

A lot of move movement in the Class A polls … but make no mistake ELCA is the best team in Class A. Should be interesting to see how all this plays out with the point system in the playoffs with Public & Private schools.

Lowndes96,

Calhoun beat Dalton last Friday. Until last year, Dalton had had a winning season for 50 consecutive years. The only reason the streak was broken was because GHSA ruled that they used an ineligible player and they had to forfeit games (they would have been 8-2 overall). Dalton is a perennial playoff team and has been ranked in the top 10 of some high school polls this season in AAAA. I assure you they were no creampuff.

Ridgeland (Calhoun’s first oppponent) won their AAA sub-region last year. They are a AAAA team this year and have five legitimate college prospects. Many sportswriters in north Georgia are expecting them to make a deep run in the playoffs this season.

Calhoun lost 10 starters off last year’s state championship defense. It will take some time for them to gel. It also doesn’t help that they have already lost two starters for the season due to injury. Calhoun plays Carrollton this Friday. Carrollton is ranked number 3 in AAAA, so it’s likely Calhoun will give up a more points this week. They will certainly have their hands full and may or may not come out with a victory. Compared to the schedule most teams are playing at the beginning of the season, Calhoun is taking on higher class teams that are high quality opponents and they are still winning despite giving up a lot of points. I assure you, Calhoun will be a force to be reckoned with in the playoffs in AA again this year. Until someone knocks them off, they deserve their number one ranking. They are the defending state champions.

@Bulldawg, Dalton has missed the playoffs two times in five years. The three times they did make it, they were out in the first round. Their region opponents are not very good. In other words when they get out of their region it’s a different world for them. Dalton is no more than a middle of the road team. Ridgeland has never done anything out of region either. Two playoff wins in recent past. When they play a good team they lose. Whether either team will do anything in the playoffs this year is pure speculation, because of the region they play in. It is my opinion that the number one team should be a great team. Great teams don’t give up thirty plus points in the regular season to anyone. I’m aware they lost ten starters on defense, yet another reason to me for them not to be number one, they’re an incomplete team. It’s been proven many times offence alone wont win a title in this state. Calhoun’s defense is an issue now and these kind of issues don’t go away.

I don’t know what Eastside has done this year and this is not aknock on them, but is there any consideration for Monroe.I know know they played Winder, who haven’t won a game in 2 years, but 51 points in th first half, is this a record of any kind ? I believe they have scored 108 pts. in 2 games, while the first team defense has not given up a single point, only the second & third string JV players and a few freshmen when playing when the teams finally scored late. I mean, what has team got to do, even playing without their first string RB (displinary problem)

‘’I have never said a word about the rankings before, but i would like to know why Calhoun is still ranked number one after giving up thirty plus points two weeks in a row.’’

In 2009, Calhoun did the exact same thing – allowed 35, then 41, and won both. And finished runner-up to Buford.

‘’ No way Buford above Thomson peach should be one but Thomson should be a solid number 2’’

Thomson has played very well. But Buford lost to a team two classes higher, so there is hesitation in dropping a team that so consistently proves itself.

‘’ don’t know what Eastside has done this year and this is not aknock on them, but is there any consideration for Monroe.I know know they played Winder, who haven’t won a game in 2 years, but 51 points in th first half, is this a record of any kind ?’’

Monroe Area appears to be pretty good. Teams have scored 51 in the first half before, but it doesn’t happen every week.

‘’ECI is out in Class A?! Are you kidding me? They lost to the number 6 team in AAA on the road! You guys have no clue whatsoever about Class A public schools. Marion has beaten who? And Aquinas has beaten a very bad East Laurens team and George Walton.’’

You were dang right about Dublin, that’s for sure.

So Todd what you’re saying is, they didn’t win the title that year and i would venture to guess they were never number one either.

re: ECI … I understand ECI is a very good team. It was the AJC that ranked ECI in preseason while the AP did not. But rankings are not predictions, and ECI did get routed, and did lose in the first round last year to a team in Marion County’s region. Not saying that Marion is better, or has played anybody, or will finish higher. But they’ve accomplished more than ECI here lately. If you’re going to throw rocks at somebody, I’d aim for Charlton. That’s more apples to apples w/ ECI.

Todd you have contradicted yourself my friend….you said about Buford & Thomson

“Thomson has played very well. But Buford lost to a team two classes higher, so there is hesitation in dropping a team that so consistently proves itself.”

And yet you drop ECI who lost to a ranked team who “is two classifications higher” and FYI ECI is 57-5 during the regular season since 2006…as the guys on ESPN NFL Primetime would say…C’mon Man!

@YELLERJACKETZ1, First of all Lowndes would never travel to play a AA team, and if we did you wouldn’t like it.
Carrolton is a young and very inexperienced team this year. A shell of what they were the last two years, though you will probably face a lot better defense this week, because of who they played its hard to tell how good they are on offense. After that you’ll go into region and Calhoun will play nobody.

Dalton and Ridgeland might do something in the playoffs this year, AAAA is pretty weak this year over all.

I have absolutely nothing against Calhoun, SO YOU CAN STOP YELLING AT ME. They have a fine program, i just don’t like what i see out of the defense.

@YELLERJACKETZ1 Actually it has been the last four years. Both are due for a drop off from the looks of it they have. I think it’s hilarious that you told me to go to sleep because you did not like what I said. You should atleast know the facts if you are going to debate me. You are really getting yourself all worked up over nothing. If Calhoun turns out to be the best team I will be right here to congratulate them and say I was wrong. It won’t bother me at all.

”So Todd what you’re saying is, they didn’t win the title that year and i would venture to guess they were never number one either.”
So what you’re saying is that you can be the #2 team in the state if you give up 41 and 35, but you can’t be the #1? …
If you think Brooks County should be #1 on the basis of the Valdosta win, that’s fine. Got no problem w/ that opinion.
I’m just surprised that you would say ”it doesn’t make sense” that the No. 1 ranking instead goes to Calhoun, a reigning state champion that has not lost to a current Class AA opponent in five years. This season, Calhoun is 2-0 against two likely Class AAAA playoff teams. I think most people would rank Calhoun #1 right now, probably by a landslide. That doesn’t prove Calhoun should be #1, but I’m just surprised that anyone would be surprised at it.

“Thomson has played very well. But Buford lost to a team two classes higher, so there is hesitation in dropping a team that so consistently proves itself.”

Let’s compare – Buford lost by 4 points. ECI lost by 26. Buford has reached the championship game for five straight seasons. ECI lost in the first round last season to an also-ran from Marion County’s region.

You knocked me on my butt with the Dublin thing. Haven’t taken a good right like that in a couple of years. :) But you can’t be comparing ECI and Buford. You’re letting me back in this fight when you do that.

Also, ECI was #8. It’s not like they fell 10 spots.

Todd..I have a pet peeve about defense man is the main reason. Calhoun and Buford has been in the championship game 4 years in a row. It looks like they are experiencing the all to common drop off after a run like that. Besides that the team they had last year has no bearing on the team they have this year. I believe it takes a complete team to win the title in GA. It also gave us a chance to debate AA football instead of AAAAAA football all the time and all the fighting and trash talking that comes with it. Wouldn’t you agree these debates were much more civil? I am not really trying to second guess you I am just having some fun. Having said that, I do believe Brooks is as good a candidate for #1 as any body and they have a real good team. They have 7 players going both ways a couple injuries and that could all go down hill. It is probably safer to keep Calhoun #1. I appreciate that you would address my comments. I believe it’s going to be a wild year in a few of these classifications. It’s going to be fun to watch.

Thomson will get their chance to move up to #2 Friday, then will promptly be dropped out of the ratings next week when Pius beats them. Pius is going to make it 3 weeks in a row that they have taken out a top 10 team. Then it will be 4 when they take on Lovett next week.

By the way, they also have the best pregame videos in the state. Awesome work being done over there. Check out week one here http://vimeo.com/stpiusvideos/2012pgv1

Not comparing Buford and ECI just the reasoning you had…but I’ll tell you what…I will let you have this one…I still think you are wrong and I still think ECI will be one of the top 10 teams when all is said and done…but we will have to agree to disagree on this one. :)

ECI may be a great team, but what have they done to prove to be in the top 10. They had a great record last year but lost in the the first round of the playoffs to a nobody that got beat by 54 in their next round. Getting blown out by a larger school proves nothing either, especially when another Class A team almost beat that team…Don’t bash Aquinas and George Walton. A team can dominate Class A football with one great player. Aquinas’s Douglas, the reiging Class A player of the year, manhandled Wilkinson Co. and Wilxcox County last year and is back, and GW returns most of thier players from a good team last year and adds a Georgia commit running back. Those teams are more worthy of ECI at this point.

Hey Todd;
How is Eastside in at the (4-A) #10 spot?
They picked on little ole (3-A) Jackson County beating them 23 – 14 and this moves them up in the rankings?

Monroe Area plays the same class & region, has taken on 2 different 5-A teams to start the season. Beating Loganville 51-7 and Winder 58-14. Monroe Area’s starting defense has not given up a touch down yet & their OL encompasses the state champion 4X100 winners.

Even after back to back state playoff teams out of Monroe Area, some players have already set new school records this year. Triple option threat with the fastest back field in 4A . . .

Liberty & Bradwell always have a lot of talent, but don’t know how to use it. They need to look at hiring some of the ex players who have gone on to do something such as Will Pettis & Ced Dickerson. They both made it out of here & played pro ball but will never get a shot bc of the politics around here.

Lowndes96,

Brooks County may be a better team than Calhoun, but Calhoun has beaten them the last two meetings, so I just can’t see Brooks being ranked ahead until Calhoun loses a game.

I think we will find out on the field because most prognosticators see those two as the cream of the crop in AA.

This ratings SUCKS! Ranking three teams with losses ahead of Aquinas, after Aquinas beat a AA
team in the opener 33-13. Then this past week, Aquinas beat George Walton, a playoff team last season, 28-21 on the road. Aquinas defeated Wilcox last year in the playoffs by a blowout margin.
You guys are totally biased toward Atlanta area teams. Aquinas or Lincoln County could both beat
the teams you rank ahead of Aquinas.

If Norcross is a Top 10 team then 6A is very weak this year. I saw them play Parkview and that did not look like a Top 10 team. In fact, I would say that McEachern with 2 losses (Grayson & Walton) is a significantly better team than Norcross.

Difference in public and private is really not an issue in regards to ELCA being number 1. No affiliation with them, but when a school that size can have 4-5 D1 prospects, everyone else is playing for second in private side. Public side would also face uphill battle. They should move on up to at least AA since they will roll thru their region and the state.

@highschoolsportsfan eci got run by WaCo. Elca took to the final seconds of the game. In a completely different league than a very good ELCA team. Elca could demolish eci if the opportunity arose.

re: Monroe Area & Eastside … Eastside beat Jackson, a previously ranked team, not Jackson County. Eastside also beat Newton – Class AAAAAA school – 31-0.

”You guys are totally biased toward Atlanta area teams. ”

You make a great case for Aquinas. But what does that have to do w/ Atlanta bias? Wilcox County is not in metro Atlanta. Are you talking about ELCA?

@Lowndes96 – It is still early and while I agree with most of your comments on Calhoun, tradition (backed by years of it being the truth) is that last year’s champs stay #1 until they lose. If the fundamentals you mention hold true, this will shake out in the next couple of weeks. Heck, if I counted right (big if!) there’s still 13 weeks to go before the championship games.

I’m ready for the bye week to be over and us to get back to paying football! Withdrawal symptoms, big time!!!

It’s a tough season to rank ‘em this year Todd. There is no way you are going to come close to pleasing most fans. Even the ones with teams that are ranked up near the top. I say you take the rest of the day off and relax.
