If you didn’t hear it, Tyren Jones of Walton rushed for 333 yards in a 37-35 victory over McEachern that ended around 1 a.m. Saturday.
First, Grayson.
Grayson was already a darling of the national rankings with top-10 recognition in all eight national polls entering its game Friday night against Central Miami. Only two other teams – Manatee of Bradenton, Fla., and Santa Margarita of California – could say that.
The question on Saturday now becomes: What do you think of us now? Grayson defeated USA Today’s No. 1 team, Miami Central, 35-3.
Grayson amassed 355 total offense to Miami Central’s 22. Miami had two running backs committed to FBS (formerly called Division I-A) schools but was held to 17 yards rushing and 3-of-12 passing. It was 21-3 at halftime.
‘’It was hard for Grayson to look more dominant than it did tonight,’’ said Stephen Spiewak, who does national rankings for MaxPreps. “The defense met all expectations and the offense showed big-play potential. Beating Central 35-3 is very, very impressive. [Grayson] has a strong argument for No. 1.’’
Grayson is No. 2 in MaxPreps’ poll, No. 1 in ESPN and No. 3 in CNN/SI and Scout.com.
Here are five things we learned Friday in Class AAAAAA –
- Grayson remains the team to beat, and new quarterback David McTier is no weakness. McTier threw a 38-yard pass to Wayne Gallman to set up one touchdown. He threw another long pass to Jordan Germany that might’ve scored, but was turned over on a fumble. He threw a 54-yard TD pass to Gallman. McTier, who grew up in the Grayson program but played two seasons at Greater Atlanta Christian, replaced Nick Schuessler, one of the more underrated aspects of Grayson’s 15-0 season in 2011. It appears that Grayson has more big-play ability at receiver and running back than last season.
- Walton’s Tyren Jones is ridiculous. The running back who ran for 303 yards and five touchdowns in the opener against Brookwood topped it Friday. He rushed for 333 yards on 46 carries and scored four touchdowns in a 37-35 victory over McEachern. Anthony Price kicked a 43-yard field goal with 25 seconds left. Jones’ two-game totals are 636 yards, 76 carries, nine touchdowns. He’s on pace to break the state record for yards in a season – in the regular season alone.
- Lassiter is better than in 2011. The Trojans made the semifinals last year, but the year was uneven. This Trojans team is going to be a force throughout. Lassiter led Hillgrove 37-0 in a 37-29 victory. Eddie Printz unofficially was 19-for-25 passing for 249 yards and two touchdowns (226 yards in the first half. Printz is going to put up huge yardage because he’s good, and he’s got some really good receivers who get open and make yards after the catch.
- Milton’s college prospects aren’t just for show. Milton had a hard time explaining how it could have five seniors committed to FBS schools, but only a 4-7 record in 2011. The Mustangs beat 2011 region champion and state-ranked Alpharetta 35-28 Friday. Three of those committed players are offensive linemen — Eason Fromayan (TCU), Josh Harris (Wake Forest) and Cory Helms (Wake Forest). RB Peyton Barber (Ole Miss) and Trayvon Paulk (offer from Georgia Tech) form one of AAAAAA’s best backfields. Barber led Milton with 225 yards Friday. Paulk added 109. Then there is Carl Lawson, an AJC Super 11 defensive lineman. He has committed to Auburn.
- Colquitt County, ranked No. 2 in preseason, still has work to do. Slow starts mean little to the Packers, who have made the semifinals or better each of the past three seasons despite erratic regular seasons. After losing to North Gwinnett 16-14 last week, they beat a ranked AAAAA team, Thomas County Central, 35-33 on Friday. It’s a good win, but not a statement. Central got within two on a 78-yard TD pass, but Colquitt ran out the clock with a couple of first downs.

The questions that remain are how does Lassiter score 37 unanswered points then allow 29 unanswered. Better tighten that up or they won’t be on top for long. Great teams close the deal.
The one definite barring some surprise, Jones running effort is more impressive this year coming of the numbers graduated from the lines on both sides of Walton last year….Nice Job kid!
Colquitt nothing special in my opinion, good team…not great. Camden showed well again tonight but I think if someone can grind the ball and run the clock then Camden is beatable.

Camden’s defense might be a problem later on, they have not been tested yet and won’t be until they’re into the Region 1 schedule. Ocala Vangard moved the ball on them last night on the first drive, but self destructed by fumbling on Camden’s one yard line. After that, lights out!
Grayson looked strong tonight, but they were playing a Miami Central team without a QB and it definitely made a difference!
Lassiter looked great on offense and defense in the first half, but had absolutely no focus or intensity in the second half and almost blew a 37 point lead!
Walton, for now is a one man show with no defense! IMO, they’re running T. Jones too much! Almost 100 touches in two games. This kid is amazing, but someone needs to a have a serious talk with his Head Coach!
McEachern, probably should have won last night, but to much T.Jones! Best 0-2 team in the state, maybe………

Tyren- After seeing yourself and Kublanow on the bench last night after your fist big run, I can’t help but think how great it would be to see that continue in Athens….”keep the band together, man.” Favorite scene from last night was you hurling water bottles and grinning after 40+ carries…priceless! IT’s plain and simple…………….GRAYSON has the best defense in the country and has for years!!!!
If a team can hold every team it has played during a season to under an average of 50 yards rushing a game, should have been noticed 5 years ago. Tjones and both the Miami backs are no match for Grayson Defense. History has shown this!!

I love reading this blog because it is amazing how much “spin” goes on here! I open up this am and read that it was not a big deal that Grayson dominated (with emphasis on DOMINATION) the Miami Central team…though last week I read that it was going to be a big test…Grayson hasn’t faced this much speed before…Grayson runs a wing-T and Central plays a college-like game…uh…well…to coin the country song phrase, How Do You Like Me Now…35-3 is only one thing. Domination on both sides of the ball! I am not a prognosticator…all games have to be played on the field and not in blogs but this team is for REAL and that’s why they have the national attention they do.

One other fact to consider…TJones is a GREAT back and will have a super year but he doesn’t meet up with a real-deal defense like Grayson has often. No blight on him, he will still do well and have a bright future. But if you want to see what happens when a great defense matches to a super back like Jones…refer to the 5AAAAA championship last December!

Camden better work it out before Coffee comes to call. Last night Ware’s defense was very good, but Coffee’s offense overwhelmed them in the 3rd and 4th Qtrs. Coffee’s O-Line is very-very big, and this will wearout the other teams defense thru the game. One thing that I noticed about Coffee, not common with a lot of other teams, is they are continuely moving fresh players in and out on O and D. Late in both games so far this year, that has made a “big” difference. I’m not worried about Camden…. they will fall to 1 or more of Region 1AAAAAA teams!

Only right to give props to Milton. Just a heads up – Milton Mustangs might actually sound better but they’re the Milton Eagles. Hats off to Dobbs – it was 35-14 late in 3rd quarter. Having seen Tyren Jones last year in person and his performance on TV last week, he is outstanding. Peyton Barber’s breakout performance last night of 225 yards was no fluke – he only played in 4 games last year and 7 his soph year – granted I haven’t seen a lot of GA high school football since finishing at LaGrange back in 1986 but I don’t know if I’ve seen a more complete running back – quickness, power, great hands…and what great character

Congratulations to Grayson, they have proven they deserve to be number one in the Nation and should remain there until someone beats them. As a FAN of Georgia Highschool we should all be proud of thier accomplishment. Camden looks outstanding, hopefully Lowndes will get a chance to play both teams this year. With Camden, Valdosta, Colquitt, Coffee and Ware on the schedule it shiould be a great footbal season. Again congratulations to Grayson.

Grayson is very good, no doubt, but Miami Central was horribly overrated. There are probably 20-30 other teams in Georgia that would beat them. Maybe more. It takes more than great athletes; it takes coaching and discipline. Miami Central is proof.

Camden74, you may want to spend less time blogging and more time with a math tutor. Tyren had 30 carries in game one and 46 in game 2. That equals 76. In game 1, Tyren was without his pads and helmet with almost the entire 4th quarter to go. Last night we needed him the entire game. McEachern was a really good team and they obviously kept fighting until the end. Not sure if you noticed but we began the 3rd quarter with the ball and burned 10 1/2 minutes off the clock on our scoring drive. Classic Walton football. Look back at his games from last year. He only played the 4th quarter in maybe 2 regular season games and a couple of the playoff games. The coaches are not going to over use him. Can you imagine the stats and numbers he’d have if they DID keep him in the entire game? Walton is young and new players are learning their role. We didn’t have the luxury of sitting Tyren and experimenting with others. The team knew we had a bye week to rest up the team and Tyren has the heart and fire to want the ball and win for the team. 76 carries and 9 touchdowns in 2 games. More then 600 yards rushing. Walton gets to rest up for North Cobb and 3 other opponents before another week off. Hopefully the defense will gel real soon. Happy Walton is 2-0 after beginning with 2 very tough opponents.

We are just trying to get healthy and somehow survive this difficult schedule. Our first 5 games ( North Gwinnett, Thomas County Central, Lovejoy, Carver Columbus, and Lowndes) So people u guys tell me how would your team do if this were their first five games, but its cool just understand we are not going to blow these teams out but when playoff time comes and we get all our players healthy we will be ready

Saw the Grayson game in person and Grayson looked better than the dome. Question Central being in top of anything. Came out with the idea of only stopping the run, did not look to have a plan for the pass. Easy to complete passes with no pressure and open receivers running the down the field. Not having a QB was disasterous for Central. Grayson will be a team to be reckoned with. Left feeling better than when I left the dome. Still believe a topped ranked defense will give them problems. Good win Grayson.

gman57,
I think that Camden has faced many large O-lines in the past and probably will in the future. PTR had one of the largest O-lines I had seen since the O-line from Ohio last year. Don’t think they put a lot of time concerned about the O-lines they face. The D-line may not be big, but they are strong and fast, plus the line backers are the real deal. Coffee may want to be concerned about the offense of Camden. Dones not matter if yourn O-line is huge, if your defense can’t stop an offense. Just saying. I am sure Camden will be better by the time they face Coffee, as will Coffee be better. By the way Ware’s defense was not that great. They are good, but not great.

The problem with being ranked #1 in the country is that to maintain that ranking, we are going to have to do some very un-Grayson like things. We’ve never been big on style points and running up the score unless it couldn’t be helped (JV or 9th graders in and playing and still scoring) but if you don’t keep the decisive wins coming, you won’t stay on top. Face it, it is a popularity contest anyway. If MC is a top ranked team, it makes me wonder if some of the others might not be as good if they played good teams all the time like we do here in GA.

You guys’ away region games are Tift and freaking Brunswick, with one tough game in Valdosta (Go Cats!). Camden 74, my bad. When you said: “IMO, they’re running T. Jones too much! Almost 100 touches in two games.” I jumped to the conclusion you meant rushes. He’s caught 4 passes and returned 2 kickoffs, so I guess that puts us at 82. Tyren is in such amazing shape and is a smart young man. He would certainly tell someone if he wasn’t up to the task. No one wants the ball more then him, which is one of the many admirable traits about him. Hopefully the offense can become a little more balanced and other players can help share the workload.

There is no doubt that it will take Pruitt a couple of years to have Coffee at the same level of the “BIG FOUR” in region 1-6A. But get there Coffee will. It will be very difficult to get through the schedule Coffee has this year, (including pre-season, 7 of 11 teams rated in top ten in their class), without having their butts handed to them somewhere. But you can believe this Coffee team is not the Coffee of years past. And it has been a blast so far watching Pruitt’s work in progress.

Granted it’s early, but comparing the two most impressive teams in AAAAAA;Grayson looks dominant on both sides of the ball, and they have played two very good teams in displaying that dominance. Camden’s looked explosive on offense, opportunistic on D, but they’ve done so against two lesser teams than Grayson. There’s one area where Camden out-and out rules, though: Grayson’s uniforms make them look like Christmas Tree elves, while the Cat’s duds exude cool.

Great Job Grayson!
As I left the stadium following a group of Miami Central parents they appreciated the ‘corn fed’ players’ of Georgia. Apparently, Grayson outsized and out performed the USA Today number one team.
What may surprise us was their praise of the two players which hopefully will gain notoriety with recruiters. Namely Jordan Germany (#27) and “Mr. In Your Face” Marquise Motley (#36). Germany was credited with being the best athlete on the field by this group of parents. Motley, the most valuable player from the State Championship Game, may be the most under rated player of Grayson. The first two plays of the game (defensively) set the tone for what would be a very long night for the Miami Central, as Motley was there both times as the running back received the exchange of the ball.
I look forward to these two players receiving the recognition in upcoming games as they definitely deserve the attention.
Congratulations to the Rams offensive lineman. Without your execution the running game would not exist. I was worried for Grayson this year as only one starter from last years team returned. My belief is that this group of lineman may very well be the best “grouping” of talent Grayson has offered over the last four years. They executed as a unit, scored over 92% in executing the assignments, and exceeded expectations in the down field blocking. Way to go guys.

Just a reminder to McEachern that all is not lost. Brookwood lost their first two the year they won State in their 1996 season when the won State and went 13-2.
Sometimes I think taking a high school team on a long trip simply can be a distinct disadvantage. I notice that Miami Central had most of the visitor stands filled in their visit to Grayson. They expected to win, but sometmes, the trip seems to psych out the team. They ARE, after all, but high school kids. Camden beat Glenville last year in Columbus, OH, but played badly.
Congratulations to Walton on a great start. Still, the State crown in the largest division rests in Gwinnett, and one can rest assured that the odds of it staying in Gwinnett for the third year in a row are at least as good as any other region. A fellow was telling me that Nkemdiche is still growing, and may be 290 lbs. Nevertheless, Grayson’s D played just as well when he had legs cramps and was sidelined.
And then there’s Sportsnut. We’ve had boasters here before, and the loveliest thing about boasters is that sooner or later, rather than eat their own words, they disappear.

You do have some good teams in Gwinnett but there are good teams across Georgia. I just happen to think Lovejoy’s D is better than Graysons. We do return 8 starters from the best D in Georgia from a year ago. Not jusy AAAA but all of Georgia. I am a devoted fan and you will never see me run. I will be here win or lose. If you take into account the national polls. Lovejoy sits behind Grayson as the # 2 team in AAAAAA and overall in Georgia. I do not make this stuff up or make excuses. We have already given a short 1/2 game lesson to one of your best in PTR in the final scrimmage game 20-7 and that 7 came on a hail mary on the last play for our varsity. Boasting is what is done by the AJC and their thoughts of who is better than whom. We just play ball. The Cats let their play speak for them. I give Grayson their props as they are the defending champions and understand that they are champs until someone else wins it. By no means will this make me doubt my Cats.

@Fred……..The point I was making is that it’s not exciting enough for College and Pro teams, which relies on the excitment of seeing as many TD’s as possible. I believe fans would not turn out as much if thier team couldn’t be proficient scorers, or have the ability to come back from large deficient.
I have to admit, there were many times I felt coach Conn needed to implement a passing game, but his choice of personal kept him from doing that. I was very excited to see the new offense last year. The Wing T with a passing threat is unstoppable. Don’t get me wrong if it’s working all night then don’t change it.
Now, I had two boys come up through Grayson and Coach football, and both are now playing at the next level, so yes I worried how the Wing T would continue to work for years watching my boys play without a passing game. I’m happy we evolved.

@ GwinnettDad == You must be related to TH or LM. I only speak facts. Concerning Grayson’s D, here is a comparison. Over the past 2 seasons, Grayson has played 29 games, Lovejoy 26. Grayson has given up 294 points, Lovejoy 178. Grayson has 9 shut-outs, Lovejoy has 11. Grayson gave up 131points in 11′, Lovejoy 73. In 10′, Grayson gave up163 points, Lovejoy 105. I know the competiton was different but they still had to play the game. They both have played in one (1) championship game with Grayson winning theirs and Lovejoy losing theirs. Grayson lost some good talent and so did L:ovejoy, namely the AAAA defensive player of the year. Do you actually believe there are 15 teams better ? If you do, then you do have the same blood running thru your viens as those who doubt the Cats are worthy of a higher ranking. Time will tell though. I am looking foward to the playoff pairings if we both get there. Querry some of your football friends and see what they think. You say I brag, tell me when.@ Fred == are those rankings in the above post (Sept. 4th, 9:37 p.m.) not computer rankings ?(your post at 9:14) points out that those are computer rankings that get more accurate as the season goes on, the same as what TH says about the Maxwell ?

Last post for the day == GHSA/ Score Atlanta has the Wildcats of Lovejoy at # 5 for those of you that can’t find the National Polls. Maybe this local poll will do for you.

@Lovejoy, honestly. “You only speak facts.” Now THAT is not only preposterous, it is hysterically funny. Keep up the chatter. Somebody out there might someday agree with you.

@sportnut – So far as I know, both Maxwell and CalPreps are computer polls, at least I think they are. I’ve heard complaints about both for several years as neither takes into account anything other that w/l/score and strength of schedule. Each has its own algorithm. The first of the season is when they are the most suspect as they are only really looking at the past with varying degrees of weighting. They do not take into account any player/coaching changes or things like redistricting. The longer the season goes on, the more accurate they tend to get as they have more data on this year’s team. It becomes an actuarial exercise based solely on the performance up to that date. Don’t feel bad, the year we beat N Forsyth, N Gwinnett and Valdosta in the playoffs we were picked by the computers to lose each game because we had lost some regular season games that year.

@ GwinnettDad == So we should feel the same about Graysons ranking? @ Fred == Same question ? According to your reasoning, we should be higher because we have not lost a regular season game in two(2) years. That is the immediate past. Well, the AP ranked us at # 9 this week, one spot ahead of Colquit, who is # 10. This is not a computer poll, is it ? Does the above ranking weigh more than other computer polls ? If so, why? Just to clarify, I refered to MaxPreps and not Maxwell. Why is it so hard for any of you to think Lovejoy is not comparable to any of the so-called “powers” ? I will be in Moultrie on friday to see for myself.

Other than Grayson being #1…. I don’t know where anyone else should be ranked and does it really matter??
All Lovejoy has to do is win and they’ll get there rankings, props and respect….imo

I was very impressed with Grayson’s whipping of Miami Central…. Right up to the part about MC not having a quarterback. Could there be less to brag about? Uh , yeah , I just raced the 100 meter record holder and beat him. One footnote- He was on crutches. Watch out Atlanta , It’s gonna be a long season.

@sportsnut – I was responding to your post – sportsnut September 4th, 2012 10:25 pm where you asked about the computer rankings. Some many things go into those algorithms that we don’t know about. Loren Maxwell responded on the other thread explaining some of methodology including history, strength of schedule, etc. I can understand that you don’t want to accept it but you are working yourself up over nothing. Heck, before last week and even at the end of last year’s season, Grayson was all over the place in the various rankings. My best advice is to pick the poll you like and stay with it. Until the end of the year, and not really even then, they won’t all agree. The best thing you can do is support your team (which you do) and drive on. If Lovejoy is as good as you say, you will begin to rack up some quality wins which will help you in the standings.
Good luck Friday and safe travels!

@ Fred == I’m not really worried about which poll says what. I like the spirited debate. I do not really care what anyone thinks because I know what I am talking about. When the pollsters make their choices, I just want them to be fair and balanced. Example, they thought Dublin was a power because of their past. What happened to them was down right ugly. 60+ points in a loss they were favored in ? Sometimes, people follow their instincts and make good choices, other times not. This is not just about Lovejoy, it is also about the other fans here that know more about the team they follow than those prognosticators entrusted with making the decisions on who belongs where. Remember that what they say matters a great deal in terms of scouts, colleges and universities choosing whom to recruit as well as who falls in what position come playoff time. This is fun for me. I am retired and a total high school sports fan. By the way, thanks for the well wishs on friday and I will hopefully have a safe trip as I will be on the 50 focused on the game. Good luck this week and stay safe.

It looks like you could give a little credit to the OL that has been dominant for Tyrene Jones. No one ever touches him until he is at least 5 yards past the line of scrimmage. Kublanow and the OL made Tyrene Jones. He’s good. The OL is great.

People have you know from years of experience; Colquitt County
has always started off this way and kicked ass at the end; it is
the way they do things down that way; they don’t give a rats ass
about RanKings and sure do not give a dam what people say about
Them; from dealing with them; Colquitt is very very low key type
Of people that loves when they are underdogs and it keeps the
opponents eyes closed thinking they are week; remember when
they went to the state finals with a 5/5 record; should that tell you
something; if they cared about rankings, they will address that to
the team but I see how Rush do things and Rankings are far from
Their Agenda; I am a diehard Valdosta Wildcat fan and think that
Bull#%€¥ about our South Georgia Brother again and see them
play for the State Champion title; Rush as I seen has a lot of
Tricks and people that can play that he is not showcasing and why?
Do not know; Colquitt County do things a lot different from other teams
And that is why they go to the Title games prepared better at the
end! Like them or not; they don’t “GIVE A Dam” but I promise you
They will be in the title game and win it all; YOU WILL SEE; YOU WILL
SEE MARK MY WORDS!!!!!

Valdosta fan, I would have called you a trader, but I kind of agree with you about
Colquitt, and YES they do things a lot different and comes out a lot better prepare
making most think they have a very weak team and then they showcase that talent
on you and that have made a living on just that; Colquitt has a lot of injuries that most
Do not know and it is not being reported, I just last year Colquitt got us good, 35 points
they demolish us, so I am hoping that for our sake (lowndes) Colquitt do not catch fire
because most teams and coaches drill about State Rankings and they sure do not care
about that stuff at All; I agree they will be there at the end and I only hope that we can
contain them until they lose to us and catch fire after we play then!
