Maxwell Ratings: Grayson leads all-class rankings

Each week, AJC.com will publish the Maxwell Ratings to give fans a computerized look at how Georgia’s 412 football-playing teams rank in each class and in all classifications.

The Maxwell Ratings uses only historical scores. Personnel changes from season to season are not considered. As a result, early-season rankings expresses a confidence level in each team based on recent seasons.

Buford’s history of dominance earns the Wolves a No. 2 ranking over all classifications despite the team’s loss of 22 starters, or the fact that Buford didn’t win its own state title last year.

Lassiter, a school that made the Class AAAAA semifinals, is not ranked as highly here as in the human polls because of its erratic history.

As the season progresses, the rankings will rely more and more on this season’s results and less on previous seasons. By the playoffs, the rankings will reflect 2012 results entirely.

I wonder if the AJC is allowed to show the AP rankings for the GHSA? We always see the AJC rankings, which are not the same.

Coffee just may be in the process of developing a “Recent season” that can be used for “Expressing a confidence level” that can be “utilized in next years rankings,”

Ya can tell ‘em ‘er boys done went to era coldege toa ben abl’ t’ figur tem der pro cedures out.

Back in the day I used to put stuff like this in my column when I couldn’t think of or was to lazy to write something relevant.

Brookwood 10? PTR 12? Dacula 13? Tear it up, throw it away.

If these are the 10th 12th and 13th best teams in 6A in Georgia, cancel the season right now.

These rankings are a joke. A team loses last week and is ranked higher than a team that wins. I’m speaking directly to Johns Creek and Chattahoochee. Yes we at Chattahoochee played a better team than Johns Creek (who played Woodstock) but still……

There has to be much more interesting stories in HS football than the Maxwell Rankings…

Like RealTalk said……I’m done.

”A team loses last week and is ranked higher than a team that wins.”

I do think that the computer rankings tend to undervalue schools that are newer, like Johns Creek. It might have to do w/ the historical scores thing. JC doesn’t have the same recent success.

That said, if you’re looking for teams to be ranked based on their W-L record, these aren’t the rankings for you.

Rankings!!!!!!! and or Rank……HaHaHa………Coffee/Pruitt,,, I guarantee is not worried about the rankings……this forum is nothing more than a trap……just to get people riled up about nothing…bottom line come December their will be a king crowned………..I am kind of proud that Georgia is representing the national polls this early ……if Georgia ranks this high or higher at the end of the season…..GOOD.

Kinda sad. What did they punch into the computer to come up with this. “Historical scores”, exactly what do you mean ? Scores from games or is this a code word that I don’t understand. Please clarify. How many years are they counting as “historical” ? two, three, four, 10 15 ?

@Real Talk…They’re just computer rankings, but brookwood has a chance to make a run but doubt it, peachtree ridge hasn’t score a point yet this season, and dacula lost to a injury riddled mill creek 35-0. So I agree with your frustration there, but I find it comical that NG is average in your opinion.

These rankings are a joke. Buford and Calhoun would get the sh>>>T kicked out of them by almost everyone one of those teams in the top 30. You guys need to get a new job, your stealing from the AJC.

to clarify, I mean 5A and 6A teams. To think they could compete with teams like Camden, Lowndes, Tucker, Walton or Grayson..
