Walton 35, Brookwood 24

Tyren Jones gave Alabama fans a little peek of what might be soon coming their way. The Crimson Tide commitment ran 26 times for 254 yards and scored five touchdowns Saturday to help Class AAAAAA No. 4 Walton to a 35-24 win over unranked Brookwood in the Corky Kell Kickoff Classic at the Georgia Dome.

It was only the second time in five meetings that Walton, ranked fourth in has managed to beat the Broncos, the first since a 14-9 win in the 2008 Kickoff Classic. It was Walton’s fifth victory in the showcase event.

Jones, who led the state with 2,375 rushing yards a year ago, scored on a runs of 71, 1, 48, 6 and 52 yards. He also caught two passes for 11 yards.

Brookwood was led by senior Jamaal Cole, who ran 25 times for 172 yards and two touchdowns.

Walton stunned Brookwood with an onside kick to start the game. No Brookwood player ever touched the ball, which was recovered by kicker Anthony Price at the Brookwood 48. But Walton wasted the momentum, as a holding penalty pushed the Raiders back and Brookwood’s defense forced a punt.

The punt was fumbled and recovered by Walton’s T’Dwan Robinson inside the 10. But Walton’s joy was short-lived. An inadvertent whistle by an official caused the down to be replayed and this time the punt was shanked and Brookwood took over at the 32.

The Broncos took advantage and In typical Brookwood fashion drove the ball 11 plays on the ground to the 6 before stalling and settling for Brandon Morrow’s 26-yard field goal and a 3-0 lead.

Walton wasted little time regaining the momentum.. On third-and-1, Jones broke free, juked his way through the Brookwood defense and ran 71 yards for a score. It was an omen of things to come.

The Raiders set up their next score after Jordan Davoudpour intercepted Zach Moon’s pass at the 37. Blake Montz had applied pressure and Sabastian Covelo tipped the pass at the line. Montz was a thorn for Brookwood all night and had a part in at least three sacks.

Walton got 19 yards from Jones on the first play, but took six more snaps to score. Jones ran it over left tackle for a 1-yard touchdown, giving the Raiders a 14-3 lead with 8:17 left in the first half.

Brookwood answered with a 90-yard scoring drive. Aided by a 15-yard roughing penalty and surviving a fumble, the Broncos scored on a 19-yard run by Cole, who got a good block from Eric Rawls as he turned the corner. The touchdown cut Walton’s lead to 14-10 with 4:05 remaining.

Jones picked up the pace again in the second half, he added a touchdown on a 48-yard run to complete an 80-yard drive to open the third quarter and then carried all four times on Walton’s ensuing 34-yard touchdown drive. The score came on a 6-yard run where it appeared Jones was going to be tackled for a 5-yard loss. But he shook free, make a terrific spin move and wound up in the end zone, giving Walton a 28-10 lead with 7:38 remaining.

Brookwood hung close with a touchdown with 11:38 remaining. A clutch 17-yard pass from Moon to Ky Priester set up Cole for a 3-yard scoring run that made it 28-17. But Walton quickly took away any chance of a Brookwood comeback by answering with a six-play drive that ended when Jones scored on a 52-yard run.

Walton’s biggest problem was penalties. The Raiders had five 15-yarders and were called for holding three times.

Tyren’s biggest strengths are his vision and elusiveness. He reminds me alot of Moreno from UGA. He doesn’t have the top end speed like a few have but his shuttle times have to be very imprssive.

For the record, I think Alvin Kamara is a great RB. I listed my top 10 RBs in the nation on 247Sports yesterday and I had

1. Tyren Jones
2. Alvin Karmara (tie)
2. Ryan Green (tie)- from St. Petersburg, Fl

As a Bama fan, I would love to get Jones and Kamara in this class, in the same backfield…..NASTY!

Both running back are incredible and wherever they both end up will be a great decision, but for anyone who thinks Tyren can’t lower his shoulder here’s a good clip.

Bama…….Do you scout Texas? :-)

I don’t scout as a profession….I do it as a “past-time”. I primarily assess high school RBs [including those in Texas] and SEC College players as my friend who scouts for the Patriots has the Southeast Region. He primarily consults with me about Bama players because he knows that I know the Bama roster across the board.

It’s something that I’d probably do well at but I’m more passionate about numbers, statistical analysis, finance/accounting, trend analysis….and I’ve actually started building Excel Models using Regression Analysis (Correlation Coefficient) to assess which variables, attributes are most important in evaluating RBs. Sort of a “mini” MoneyBall approach to evaluating RBs. Actually finishing up a Master of Accounting and prepping for the CPA Exam now and the Financial/Business Analysis Class I’m currently taking is helping me expand on my current “work-in-progress” model.

I’m a numbers/stats nerd that also loves football. So in a few words….NO, I don’t “scout Texas”.

@BamaBornDukie

It’s funny how you constantly seek approval on public blogs.

NDS, you hit the nail on the head. BamaBornDukie has become quite the joke on the blogs. Georgia Varsity Vent and this one, for sure. He actually started out last year sounding fairly intelligent but then it became obvious he’s just a self-serving know-it-all that is full of himself, and hot air. He’s one of those guys who thinks he knows more then the coaches but I bet if he was ever called on the carpet by a coaching staff, he’d run like a coward. He’s clearly obsessed with Tyren Jones, which is wonderful, because he’s an amazing young man and talent. But the second something doesn’t go well for Tyren and the Raiders (in the first half of the state championship against Grayson, for example) he immediately attacks the coaches, mainly the offensive coordinator. He ignored the fact that Grayson was the much better team that day. That Walton had major players with serious injuries. That the defense gave up 2 quick touchdowns, something that hadn’t happened all season. That a receiver fumbled on a huge gain. That special teams was shaky, even calling a fair catch on the one foot line. No…it was all on the offensive coordinator and his play calling. He even attacked the Walton coaches after a scrimmage 2 weeks ago against Hillgrove. After a scrimmage! That’s when you get your first chance to see what you’re working with. It was common knowledge that Tyren and several players on the OL were throwing up on the sidelines and had fevers, but it was the fault of the OC and his predictable play calling. In a scrimmage! But BamaBornDukie needs to keep up the pompous spouting off because he’s become quite entertaining, even though he has no shred of credibility.

Tyren Jones biggest problem as I see it is that the entire offense seems to be built solely around him. That is a lot for one player to carry. When a team is successful in stopping him as Grayson did last year it is helpful to have something else to fall back on. Having that something else in turn makes it easier for him to do his thing because you don’t really know what is coming freeing him up.

The young man clearly is a gifted, talented runner. I’ve heard some things recently that make me think he is a good kid as well.

Fred, Walton has a history of building their offense around the guys who carry the ball. Pace Stead, Kyle Vorster, Michael Boydston, JJ Jackson, Justin Forte, and so on. It seems to be working as they have a successful program and record and always make the playoffs. They also have a smart and steady quarterback in Parker McLeod, who is more then capable of passing to his talented receivers. Tyren happens to be one of those talented receivers, too. Speaking of Tyren, you have heard correctly. All of my friends who are associated with the Walton program say that he is a really nice young man, and that his entire family is great. That’s always a nice thing to hear.

You are right in saying that one long run Jones had against Grayson was late well after the game was decided. I wouldn’t say it was a lucky run though. If I remember right he bounced off one tackler, spun around and ran most of it backwards with a defender trying to get him down. He is a very impressive player.
