We’re not used to underrating Camden County in preseason, but that was some performance Saturday at the Georgia Dome – 42-0 over Peachtree Ridge. PeaRidge returned its front seven on defense, so not many saw that coming.
Two 2011 state champions lost in the first weekend – Burke County (to Thomson) and Savannah Christian (to Jenkins). Three teams ranked No. 2 lost – Burke, Colquitt County (to North Gwinnett) and ELCA (to Washington County).
Upcoming –
Grayson vs. Central of Miami on Friday. Grayson is No. 1 in the ESPN rankings. Central is No. 1 in USA Today.
Six games match two state-ranked teams –
Blessed Trinity at Lovett
Buford at Elbert County
Colquitt County at Thomas County Central
Northside (Warner Robins) at Flowery Branch
St. Pius at Westminster
Wilkinson County at Wilcox County
Here are 13 more games that caught my eye to give us a 20 best. (Who did we miss?)
Baldwin at Jefferson County
Brunswick at Glynn Academy
Coffee at Ware County
Griffin at Dutchtown
LaGrange at Newnan
Lassiter vs. Hillgrove
Marist at Clarke Central
Mary Persons at Jackson
Milton at Alpharetta
Newton at Eastside
Thomasville at Cairo
Walton at McEachern
West Forsyth at Gainesville
Might as well add these six between good Georgia and good out-of-state teams –
Vanguard, Fla. at Camden County
Valdosta vs. North Augusta, S.C.
A.C. Flora, S.C. at North Gwinnett
Pine Forest, Fla. at Stephenson
ELCA at Briarwood Christian, Ala.
Oxford, Ala. vs. Carrollton
Changes in the rankings …
Lincoln County is the new No. 1 in Class A. No. 1 Savannah Christian fell to No. 10. No. 4 Landmark fell to No. 9. No. 2 ELCA dropped one spot after its loss to a ranked AAA team. Calvary Day entered at No. 7. Darlington dropped out (lost to a Tennessee state champion). … Colquitt dropped from No. 2 to No. 7 in AAAAAA. Burke County dropped from No. 2 to No. 8 in AAAA. … Cedar Grove dropped out of AAA, replaced by Jackson.

I agree totally with Region1AAAAAA comments about Lowndes, I root for both schools, but neither has a capable QB. As much as I hate to say this, but I think race plays a part in selecting the QBs down here. The last black QBs for Lowndes won state titles, they just do not put the best athletes on the field at that position. So many of these guys play QB in middle school and then they are changed when they get to the high school….politics are big time influeences in Titletown these days.

I love how you guys are calling Walton one dimensional. They didn’t play well vs Grayson last season and play calling was terrible. But don’t you think they learned from that. Don’t take what happened Saturday as them being one dimensional. The QB can do more if and when he needs to. I think what happened on Sat is smart coaching. Why show anything else when the team we are playing can’t stop the 1st thing we are trying to establish? Why give scouting material on my passing game when everybody knows we like to run Jones and he is running wild. Keep thinking Walton is one dimensional and it might come back to bite you in arse.

Ok i know i said that i saw some good things happen in the dome from the packer game. Now i would like to take a second and explain some of what i saw. First cole should have had 3 td passes but hears what happen. On a td pass to bobby hill who had inside position on his defender in the inzone on a deep slant our te ran the wrong route and some how ended up in the inzone and thought the pass was for him and he dropped the pass in the inzonewhile a wide open hill could only watch. On the another pass play cole had 2 recievers open with a clear path to the inzone but on the pass he was hit by a North Gwinnett lineman causing the pass to be under thrown (good play by the N gwinnett defense) or else it was a score. And on cole’s second interception Boyd (83) was 4 or 5 steps behind the NG cornerback but the pass from cole was a lame duck and had too much air under it and their was no saftey over top r even 15 yards in the picture. The NG corner made the interception like he was coached to do but he was burt bad and NG knew it. Now not taking anything from NG cause their coaching staff and team are good and much respect to them because that 3-5 stack defense is the only defense that really bothers Rush P and its like playing a 2-3 zone in basketball. If u are a fastbreak team and the other team plays zone then u only get a few chances to get out and get some layups and we missed our layups. Congrats to NG but the only way to really hurt their defense is to go over top and we did 3 times but came up 0 and 3. But guess what everyone we don’t have anyone else on our schedule who runs that type of defense. I’m not saying we want lose another game but we will score more than 14 points in the rest of our games this year. Good luck everyone, and i’m not making excuses, i’m just backing up something i said earlier, the bottom line is we lost period but their is a very big reason for packer nation not to panic, but then again we really don’t know how to do that anyway. Go Pack!!!

Plowboy, I know that it hurts a little bit to hear uncomfortable truths, but think about it. Khary Franklin won the state one year and got moved to RB and replaced the next year. Tyler Hunter should have play QB his entire time there…and so on. You normally do not run a Wing T with a QB that is slow and not a running threat, but hey I am just an idiot, right?
I really do not know the other kid, but if you think that Stephenson has the skill set to run a highly successful triple option in Region 16Aand, you are more than welcome to it……good luck with that.

Titletown USA when Lowndes won the titles in 2004 and 2005 they had a qback that didn’t run or pass well. They just had very good talent around him. He was capable as a run threat but he hardly ever did.
I’m sure Lowndes coaches say “well it will cost us a state title but let’s play the white boy at qback”.
Lowndes qback in 2008 and 2009 was the right choice. Why are you so hung up on color any way?
You got issues?

Everyone know Probst will have Colquitt ready in a few weeks! They have lost the last 3 games they played on the last play of the game. They could easily have won all of them. But the big question is, what are they going to do with all those “2012 State Champions 15-0″ tee shirts their fans brazenly wore to the Georgia Dome last Saturday??!! Kinda sounds to me like something Northside – or Valdosta – would do. Just kidding Reese, and ENR!

@stephensonfinest – I saw the multiple posts on THIS blog and you were making your points in them. I also saw the exact same cut and paste comment on 5 other blogs about the scores from the CK. Remember those? They are the ones where you said things I won’t repeat.
Best team money can buy? Really? Is that the best you can do? It has been discussed over and over again about the Gwinnett Football League and how it is the training/feeder system for the Gwinnett schools. Here’s the link – http://www.gwinnettfootball.com/ . Go check it out. The current D with the exception of one (not Robert by the way) had been playing together in that league for years before they moved up to Grayson. How many of your players can say that they grew up in the schools feeding Stephenson? How many transfers does Stephenson have? Let us all know.

@AVikingFan – some of the t shirts were pretty cute. One said “What a Rush!” Another said “Perfection Accomplished December 15, 2012.” I saw a couple from Camden that I thought were cute as well but just can’t remember what they were. I *hate* when we do something like that. Seems like additional motivation for the opposing teams. Better to talk about something completed than talk with certainty about something that might not happen.

@ Plowboy-Viking – a GPA of 4.0 and bench pressing 225 22xs does not make you a top LB in the state!! How do you know his work ethic is unmatched? Have you been to Camden, Colquitt, Coffee or Valdosta weight rooms or practices? Do you know the GPA of any of the top LB’s in the state? How many DI scholarship offers does he have? I must have misssed his name in Rivals top LB’s in the class of 2013. I’m not saying he isn’t a great kid or good player, i’m just saying he is a bit overrated!!

It’s very early in the year to worry about who’s jumping over who in the polls. I understand Kell jumping over many after beating a 6A team pretty easy. Camden should have gone to 2nd. They were very impressive Saturday. Lovejoy needs to win many games in 6A before they move up or even stay in top 10 (last year beating many 4A teams with 5A enrolment numbers doesn’t earn a top ten this year in 6A).
I say give it 4 to 5 weeks to settle in. This isn’t like Pros where last year’s team is just like this year. It’s HS and there is some turnover.
This will be another fun year to watch HS football.

@Plowboy-Viking —Burgman, Roberts, Lang all play RB. I ask you to name a WR or TE that has a varsity reception. Your passing game only consist of throwing a seam route or to the flats to your RB’s. The route Burgman caught the 65yd TD against Thomasville in the scrimmage. Everybody in the region will key on those 2 routes and we will see if the players you have playing QB are really the best choice.

Titletown USA, I totally disagree with your statement about the race card being played as far as the QB position at Valdosta High. They are playing the best player they have at that position. The QB position in Gillespies offense is very difficult physically and mentally. I believe you are alitle stuck in the past. Great athletes don’t always make the best QBs. Tomberlin tried to play a couple great black athletes at QB and it didn’t work. Both were great runner, but neither threw the ball well. Regardless if a kid is black, white, yellow or green, they have to be compatible in whatever offensive system the coach runs.
However, we will see what happens next year as Valdosta has a sophmore who is a black kid from East Coweta that will compete for the QB job.
I assure you coach Gillespie will play the best available.

@Plowboy-Viking – Checkout where the QB’s of those championship wing T teams all signed scholarships to. None of those teams were one dimensional. I have no problem with Lowndes, Im just stating my opinion just as everyone does. However, we all know opinions are just like…. (well you know the rest)

Region 1aaaaaa and Titletown y’all need to chill out and maybe coach something first….better not step to this plate unless you have all your facts in order……for your info, I believe Lowndes will throw it a whole lot more this yr…..as they should….wait and see!!!!! Lowndes’s weakness will be their dline ,

you ignored a couple of my questions but i will gladly answer yours..stephenson always have a couple of transfers but most come from feeder programs as well CDJ,ROCK CHAPEL,REDAN … which feeds a few schools mlk swd ect.. some even go to tucker even tho they have there own program because all the parks are right down the street from each other…grayson is a great program ..great job but you did miss a few of my questions

Region1AAAAAA ,
tre jackson is 5′11 and 215 lbs………….you are sadly mistaken on that one………and he is one of the best linebackers in the state…….and he is just a junior
Lowndes will be fine…..the qb you are refferring to is alex stephenson……..he ws 4-0 at valdosta last year when he got hurt…granted he may not quite be the passer shelby wilkes is but lownndes does not need an elite passer …we just need someone who can throw it out of the misdirections and can also tuck it and run it and pick up tough yards…………alex is 6′1 205……….he is not the 5′8 165 lb lance jarriel we had last year………..alex can run the football very well………hard to bring down…..you will see

As much as I hate to say this, but I think race plays a part in selecting the QBs down here. The last black QBs for Lowndes won state titles, they just do not put the best athletes on the field at that position.
I agree……..in 2010……..tyler hunter was the starting qb against newnan in rd 2 of the playoffs…….lowndes beat newnan 38-14…..he looked great and could also run the ball great …………he was a much better athlete than cole parker………….waht happens……….?? next week against collins hill………..out comes hunter back in goes cole parker………its the reason we lost

i agree with titletown……………on the qb issue at lowndes suprinsingly……….unter should have played qb and the wing t is more dangerous when it is a 4 headed monster vs a 3……2 wingbacks…….a good fullback and a duel threat qb make the wing t hard to stop………..and its definately not a color issue with me but lowndes would wreck havoc when kary franklinwas a t qb…….and if it aint broke dont fix it……..he should have stayed at qb in 09 instead of cole……..and cole should have never came back in after hunter played so well against newnan………
i feel alex stephenson will be a major threat this year in our offense……he is decent….at throwing the ball…..has a good arm and he is pretty fast for his size and strong……..i expect good things from him

@Bobo is Not the Problem – Reid went to Tift Co. Great move for him and sorry to see him go. Chuck Goddard is his replacement. Not a great personal record but not sure what he had to work with before. He came over from Walton (Defensive coach). Time will only tell how well he will do. Reid left him an awesome foundation.

Howdy Fred, Sportsfan31313, Grayram, Blue Eagle, Camden74, bksmith 14, and all you guys from last year. Looks like we have a few new ones. That’s good! This year is shaping up to be an interesting and funfilled season. I still believe the Gwinnett teams and our region (1-6A) play the best ball overall and Walton looks even better than last year from the Cobb area. I think the former Walton coach, now at Ware, will take on Coffee this week. That will tell us a lot about both teams. Tifton will surprise some folks with their new coach from East Paulding, but I heard a lot of their returning players have quit the program. Anybody know if that’s true?

I am feeling Valdosta may take Region 1…Ive noticed a few critical of their defense ,maybe so .But from what ive seen ,I don’t think anyone will be able to keep up with their offense…….The Camden/ Valdosta matchup will turn out to be one for the ages…….Region 1 will have plenty of great games this year. Camden , Valdosta will put up good numbers. The Packers will rebound and Pruitt at Coffee should be good to watch…..Watching this pan out the next couple months will be a blast……..Too many good teams in AAAAAA ths year……The kid from Walton is unreal…. “one man show”……with this kid and a decent defense ,it’s all you need…….. Grayson will not repeat this year , too many teams in the highest class with superior athletes this year………Tyren Jones , 254 yards and 5 TD’s against Brookwood! and what can you say about J.J Green

I appreciate your honest bksmith…to the others, .I do not have a problem with race nor do I think that the coaches are racist down here, it is just a systematic problem that exists and should be changed…that’s all. I will leave it alone and this point and just enjoy Region 1 football. I wish all these young men that best of luck and continued success and hope everyone has a safe season.

@stephensonfinest – I answered the question about where the talent comes from and by doing so, also answered the insinuations about “buying” talent. I have no idea who lives with who and frankly don’t care be it Grayson or anybody else. It really is none of my business nor anyone else if the GHSA has ruled it legal. I happen to have been told some things about why Robert chose Clemson but I don’t believe in sharing confidences. Suffice it to say that the evil machinations you and others want to attribute to him or others are far from the truth. Sometimes the reason a teenager gives is really the reason whether you want to believe it or not.

@ Slinger == If you have seen Lovejoy, the you know that they average 300 across the offensive line. From what I have seen so far, not many teams have gig OL. Walton is pretty big but not Colquit, Grayson or Camden. These kids also have experience and will be ready to play.
@ FridayNightLightsFan == To the issue of enrollment, it does not matter the overall number in the school but how many want to play ball, period. Calhoun had more players than many higher classification schools and they are State Champs with a lower enrollment than many schools. So that point is moot. There is a school called Eastern Christian with 54 students in grades 6 thru 12. 46 of them are boys and 46 are on the fooball team. Get the point. Every year, some school loses a game to an opponent fron a lower classification. In the polling cnversation, you lose, you fall. Say Colquit bites it again vs. TCC, do they still deserve to be ahead of teams that have less losses ?

I get it now. The Stephensen posters are feeling very confident because they are “playing down” in classification this year and feel that they are the new big dog on the block. Stephensen should have a good team but there some pretty darn good teams in this lower classification. Just think about the bashing your program will get if you cant win a title in this lower classification. But I must admit if Stephensen could ever get a real play making quarterback they “could” be awesome, even with present coaching staff.

Sportsnut…………former AAAA squads don’t get any respect in here from some of these guys. Some consider any ball played lower than the highest class JV ball……..We know that is not true , but thats how it is…….I think Lovejoy will have to have the 2012 Championship trophy in it’s case before anything is given……….But honestly where should Lovejoy be ranked in your opinion ?……..Lovejoy upset Westside Macon a few years back , I think in 2010 went 10-0 and lost in the first round. Last year Lovejoy had a good run against Kell and Warner Robins. Capped off with a not so impressive show against Tucker in the Championship game…..So should Lovejoy be ranked ahead of some of these squads with multiple championships ,?
