North Gwinnett junior kicker Michael D’Angola calmly drilled a 34-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Bulldogs to a 16-14 win over Colquitt County, Saturday at the Georgia Dome in Game 3 of the Corky Kell Classic.

North Gwinnett head coach Bob Sphire said he and his staff never mentioned the 17-7 loss, at home, that his Bulldogs suffered at the hands of Colquitt County last season in the second round of the state playoffs.

He didn’t have to.

“We studied the film so we could prepare, but that was it,” Sphire said. “This is high school football and it’s important to these kids. They want to compete with the best. I’m sure [the loss] was on their minds, but eveything was unsaid.”

The Bulldogs let their play and effort do the talking in the rematch. North Gwinnett’s defense was stout throughout the contest, holding the Packers to less than half of the 30 points per game they averaged last season.

“It was an unbelievable effort,” Sphire said. “We did the same thing last year. I can’t say enough about the way [the defense] played.”

Offensively, along with D’Angola’s heroics, Bulldog junior quarterback Michael Haynes outdid his more heralded counterpart, Colquitt’s Cole Segraves, who is being recruited by several FBS (formerly Division 1A) schools. Haynes completed 13-of-20 passes for 125 yards with one interception, while Segraves was 10-of-23 for 124 yards and two interceptions.

“Micheal’s a great athlete, a heck of a baseball player,” Sphire said. “He misses a lot of time in the spring and summer because he plays baseball, so he’s been a bit of a project. But he competes and he came up big for us.”

Haynes also rushed 12 times for 51 yards, and saved his biggest run for when the Bulldogs really needed it. Trailing 14-13 with 1:42 left in regulation time and no timeouts, North Gwinnett took over on its 46 yard line. Haynes hit receivers Nate Brown and Russell King, both juniors, for gains of 10 and 11 yards, respectively, but neither player could get out of bounds.

On the next play, with :46 seconds left, Haynes rolled to his left, tucked the ball away and sprinted 22 yards down the far sideline before he was knocked out of bounds at the Packers’ 11 yard line. Haynes was sacked for a loss to the 17 yard line on the next play by Colquitt defensive end Jamiyus Pittman.

But with the clock ticking down, the Bulldog field goal unit sprinted on to the field, lined up properly, and D’Angola did the rest, nailing the 34-yarder with plenty of room to spare. In a cruel bit of irony, earlier in the fourth quarter Pittman, who was dominant at times, dropped an easy two-point conversion pass on a “tackle eligible” play after Deonte McCain scored from five yards out to give Colquitt a 14-13 lead at the nine minute mark.

@cat doc

I agree, he was mentored by spurrier…. I had a grayson fan claim that I had a vendetta against them,,,, he is either ignorant of what the word means, or doesn’t know me, or took what i blogged wrong… Getting back to CC and NG’s game Sat nite, To me the best game played in dome Sat.

Sure i would have liked to see r1, CC win, but kind of knew that CC had their work cut out for them… NG has been one of and if not the only consistent team in past 8 years or so.

CC has been the same consistent I mean since post too over… As a r1 (lOWNDES) fan I knew that CC had too many position players to leave to be a contender this season. CC is not as balanced as they have been either… and their coach letting everyone know it too, by his actions…..

They are on the skids, and going down fast..
1. No running game.
2. will need this to give seagrave a chance to air it out for yards…
3. this says that their balanced attack is not balanced anymore…
4. In turn keepin the defense on the field too long… ( THEY DO…. have a good defense no doubt about it. This will keep them competitive throughout the year..
5. Now that prost is showing his true colors, this will begin to hurt the pack rather help them….

Now for the +’s
1. The big games are not new to the packers..So nwhen and if they do get deep i the playoffs, look for them to do well.
2. Seagrave is good, and is a natural at leading, and this is not taught.. again this will give them an above average in the big games..
3. This year is not new territory, speaking of r1, as is to camdenm and brunswick..
4. Kind of torn by next point, coaching… prost has some baggage, and it looked to me it began to show Sat…

NG was hungry and out fro revenge Sat.. and an excellent game was called.. They have got some speed too. .I look for NG to go further than they have been . Coach kept his cool and BANG., the winning fieldgoal was made as time ran out….. Great game throughout,,, Yea it is still too early to tell which one if either will go to the big dance….

And again the best game of them all Sat, hats off to both teams….

NG has a RB, his name is Cam Lewis and he’s 6′ 205lbs. He was #2 and looked very good Saturday. Miles is going to play defense unless NG really needs him to run the ball. He’s a shut down corner.

wow colquitt lost to NG. Colquitt defense played amazing just that qb wasnt playing well. If colquitt can get their offense running they would have beat NG and I could of swore he missed that field goal.
