The Washington County Golden Hawks withstood a late comeback from the Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy Chargers and hung on for a 24-19 road victory in McDonough.
Behind by 12 points early in the fourth quarter, ELCA closed the gap on a 10-yard scoring run by Keyonte Green, then forced a three-and-out to get the ball back. The Chargers drove to the Washington County 13, where a Dalton Etheridge pass on fourth-and-7 fell incomplete near the goal line with 25 seconds left.
Washington County opened the scoring early in the first quarter on a 37-yard field goal by J.W. May. The Chargers took the ensuing kickoff and assembled a 70-yard scoring drive, capped off by Green’s 2-yard run. But Melvin Hill raced 36 yards for a touchdown to give the Golden Hawks a 10-6 lead at halftime.
Washington County struck again in the third quarter when William Walker found Deonte Latimer open down the middle for a 30-yard touchdown pass. Marquis Griffin ran 14 yards for a Charger score on the first play of the fourth quarter to cap a 90-yard drive, but Walker scored from 25 yards out on a keeper to make the score 24-12 with 8:51 left.
