Former Washington coach Cofield takes Douglass job

Rodney Cofield, the football coach who built Washngton into an Atlanta city power after years of losing, is the new head coach at Douglass, a former winning program that has lost 29 of 30 games.

Cofield was 97-46-1 in 14 seasons (1995-2007) at Washington and led the only three Washington teams to win 10 games (2004, 2001, 1997) since the 1950s. His players included five AJC Super 11 players, most recently Georgia cornerback Branden Smith. Washington had suffered 15 straight losing seasons until Cofield arrived.

Douglass had a winning history until the past five years, when declining enrollment took its toll. Its alumni include recent NFL players Jamal Lewis, James Davis, Stanley Pritchett and Ahmad “Batman” Carroll.

“That was one of the things that attracted me – the tradition,” Cofield said. “These people are hungry, and they’re ready to come back. Somebody said that if anybody can do it, I can be the man, so that’s why I got the call. I’m looking forward to it.”

Cofield was forced to give up coaching, per Atlanta Schools rules, after taking a job in administration in 2008. He originally was tapped to take the Therrell head coaching job this fall. He led Therrell through spring practice, but Douglass offered him a spot as athletics director in addition to head coach, so he made the jump this week. The Therrell job reverted to Tony Rambo, the Panthers’ head coach since 2008.

Cofield said he had five assistants joining him from his old Washington staff. They are Reginald Williams, Jeff Williams, James Reece, Jurenski Andrews and Moncrief Hart.

“I’m glad to be back,” Cofield said. “I believe in restoration, building that winning program back. Douglass has that ich history and strong alunni base. We have the potential to be great at Douglass. we just have to make the program attractive again.”

My fellow Mays Raiders…why are we at odds on the blog? We should not air our dirty laundry out in public, just my opinion. I am ready for some football and so should everyone at this point. Actually, for inquiring minds,Mays as a preseason game vs. Grady on Aug. 17th at Lakewood @ 7pm. As far as the team is concerned, Mays is the only team in the difficult region 6AAAAA that is returning the core of the players on offense so I’m excited about this year chances of more than just “one and done”. Lastly, I think Calloway is a great coach and it takes more than a great coach to win in the post season…

P.S. If I’m not mistaken, Mays football team is holding a car wash Sat. July 28th at the Wendy’s on Cascade starting at 10am…one way to lend support is to come and get your car washed..

Looking forward to following this program. If the kids commit to being disciplined, and listens to this experienced coach, they will turn around very quickly. Coach Cofield has learned from personal experience that hard work and discipline can overcome talent. While at Fulton High School in Atlanta, we always overcame the lack of talent with great discipline, and great coaches. Coach Cofield learned from Willie Hunter, Alvin Neeson, Roland Turner, Coach Walton, and the like. I see great things for Douglass High School Athletics in general, not just the Football Program. Since Fulton no longer exists, I might as well say, “Go Astros!!”

Congrats to Douglass and all of the excitement that Rodney Coefield is creating. For it was only a short time ago that BTW Fans were calling for Coefield’s head on a platter. At least he won’t have the burden of playing his son anymore and perhaps he can make better decisions. Unless Rodney Coefield has changed his inner self and managed to deal with some of his known and publicized short commings, Douglass will be the best underachieving team in high school football.

Washington High School??? Hackney is a pretty good coach. Last year almost playoff berth was a miracle considering the scraps he had to work with. Problem is we don’t have feeder parks like Dekalb and Gwinnett Counties. Kids learn to run Tucker’s system at the age of 10 or younger. APS could do the same.

Hackney had more than scraps to work wit only thing that hurt Washington last year was the players learning to run the wing -t. They got better as the season and truth be told the only lost they shoulda had was against St. Mtn. In that game it was almost 0-0 going to the half before St. Mtn started scoring. But anyway that was last year they are a year older and will be better. Go Bulldogs!!!
