Football: Grayson ranked No. 2 in preseason poll

It’s been 20 years since a Georgia high school football team has won a national championship. Grayson, a returning state champion in Georgia’s highest classification, is poised to make a run.

This week, the Rams were ranked No. 2 in preseason by MaxPreps in the first major national poll. Grayson was 15-0 last season and finished in the top five of several national rankings. This season, 10 of 11 defensive starters return, including defensive end Robert Nkemdiche, the 2011 all-classification player of the year.

‘’Grayson should have the country’s best defense, and their offense, with the amount of skill it returns, will be just fine,’’ said Stephen Spiewak, editor of MaxPreps’ national football rankings. “I do expect them to return to a more run-based offense to which the program has been more accustomed. Not to mention, no matter which team Grayson plays, it will always have the single best player on the field [in Nkemdiche].’’

Ranked No. 1 is Manatee of Bradenton, Fla. Grayson and Manatee will have one common opponent – Central of Miami. Grayson plays Central on Aug. 31 at Grayson.

Another Georgia team is in MaxPreps’ top 25. That’s Colquitt County at No. 18.

‘’Colquitt seems to have a good blend of veteran leadership and talented youth,’’ Spiewak said. “I really think Cole Segraves is going to have a huge senior season. It came extremely close to beating Grayson last year and would give them a game this season as well. Overall, I think it’s going to be a very good year for high school football in Georgia.

The most recent Georgia team to win a national title was Valdosta, which was selected in 1992 by the National Prep Poll and the National Sports News Service.

I must be getting old. I can remember when Wright Bazemore and Nick Hyder led the Valdosta Wildcats to 23 state titles and 6, count em, 6 NATIONAL TITLES. Great coaching is what makes a good team a great team. Those Wildcat teams were truly great teams.

And in a couple of years don’t sleep on Coffee Co with their new head coach.Yeah Grayson is the class of Ga right now but to get a national championship they are without a dought going to have to go thru at least two 1-aaaaaa teams in the playoffs again and their defense is a year older and will be very tough but Colquitt’s offense is a year older too. And this offense scored 31 points on Grayson including 17 straight at one point!!! As a matter of fact we have scored 31 points the last two times we have played them. I was fortunate to attend VHS 1984-87, when 2 state and 2 national title were won by the ‘Cats. The 86 version has to be ranked as one of the most dominant high school teams in history: after dismantling every team they played – including crushing a smack-talking Bradwell Institute team by 40 in the playoffs – they won the state championship with a 28-0 beat down of a good Clarke Central team. Love knowing that high school football in south Georgia is still being played at such a high level.

There is a lot of talk of Colquit County and their chances of winning it all this year. Even the author of this blog will call it that way, depending on who’s asking. If a Grayson fan is the questionaire, then the answer would be the Ram’s. If you are from Moultrie, the answer is the Packers. It will be very interesting to see who stands where when it counts. Many teams do not have room for failure as they will face stiff competition early in the season. The C.K.Classic will put some teams in the hole early in their class races and some will face non-region games in the early going that will give measure to just what they are made of. Do not make any mistakes or be off your game at any point this year with the reclassification as there are sure to be some surprises. Back to Colquit, they have a week 2 date with the runner-up in AAAA from last year in Lovejoy. This game will go a long way in determining much on the entire season for both teams. Both had excellent seasons a year ago and return a nucleus of talent that should take them both far. On Sept. 7th, in Moultrie, this one should give the picture a little clarity as far as two of the contenders for the State Crown. Other than those games at the Classic, this is a very big early regular season game, with heavy implications for later in the year. 87 days until it begins and all will be back to normal.

Big games for AAAAAA contenders
Grayson-Only have Central Miami on schedule. Schedule favors them to get to state
Camden-Colquitt,Valdosta,Lowndes, PTR
Lowndes-Colquitt, Valdosta,Camden
Colquitt-Lowndes,Valdosta,Camden,Carver,Lovejoy,TCC, North Gwinnett(Formidable schedule)
Valdosta-Lowndes,Colquitt,Camden,North Augusta
I know that it looks crazy, but based on schedules these are the schools with a hill to climb during the season. Grayson gets the nod as the favorite by schedule. If they get by Central, they will win out in the region and if the playoff schedule favors them, they could win state. But there is an “IF” that is their offense has to produce, the defense may carry them through the regular season, but come playoff time, the offense has to give them something. Region 1 AAAAAA as good as it looks, there can be only one. Hard to say at this point, the nod has to go to Colquitt based on accomplishments last year. There is an “IF” there, same as Grayson, the offense has to give them something. Lowndes and Valdosta can make some noise. Don’t see anyone from this region going undefeated. That leaves Camden, they will face challenges this year, not because they are in a new region, but the talent may not be what it has been. Yes they have talent, but they lack size as in the past. In fact they are opposite of the others, the offense will be there, the defense has to give them something. Lovejoy,Brunswick will be interesting to see how they adjust to bigger programs. Looking forward to another spectacular year of high school football in Ga.

It’s just AMAZING how SOME NSWR fans live in the past. Please, if memory serve me right, NSWR had 3 opportunities, following the Tiger fumble recovery for TD, to win the 2011 Tucker/NSWR match up and what happen?…GOOSE EGG and let’s not forget a couple TD called back on the Tigers. Let’s move on, there is about to be another GREAT year of GA HS football. Since, some Eagle fans want to live in the past, then let it be known…”NSWR shouldn’t have beaten Tucker in 2007 (period)!” The series is tied 1-1 and based on the history of both of these 5A POWERHOUSE programs, there will be collusion and as history goes, it will be played with MUCH at stake. Good Luck to all the NSWR Eagle fans for a very successful 2012 season…DeKalb will be waiting.

Also, noticing a couple of post around 6A region 1 being the SEC of GA HS football, well there is a region in 5A, that showcase SEC like talent and play, as well, with just as many spectacular Friday Night highlights . If you don’t know, then look at the last line of my post.

Since it’s impossible to settle this comparison on the field, maybe we can use an off field approach? Let’s compare the number of student/athletes that sign D1 scholarships in February 2013? That at least provide us bloggers the high degree of talent that both regions have to offer to MAJOR programs at the next level. Because I would bet, there will be the same number of D1 college representatives at our little D2 HS football games as there will be at the mighty 6A region 1 SEC games. (LOL)

I have really gotten a thrill out of reading about our football again the past few days.

Here is what I see.. Yes Grayson is one heck of a ball club, they deserved and earned last year’s state title. However I believe the final game would have been a lot different had the playoff brackets been set up better. You had (4) teams on the same side of the bracket that were state contenders.

North Gwinnett, Colquitt, Camden, & Grayson.

Unfortunately for us (Colquitt Fans) we had to play them all. Beating out N.G., & Camden “on the road” and nearly taking Grayson. I hope this year’s playoff brackets are set up to where the top teams can somehow make their way to play each other in the final game. Would make for a much more exciting state championship game. No disrespect to the Walton fans, but I do not believe they would have been able to do any better than they did against any of the teams I listed above.

I continually hear/read people say that the brackets were set up all wrong last year and I just don’t get it. The brackets were established before the season started and anyone had any idea of who might wind up where. The brackets weren’t slanted to favor anyone because who knew? Brookwood was defending state champs. Would anyone at the start of the season predict they would be #2 in the region? Likewise, had Colquitt won their region, they would have been in a totally different place in the brackets and the outcome might have been different or it might have been the same. The only guarantee is that a #1 will be playing a #4 and a #2 will be playing a #3 in the first round and that if a #1 wins they get at least the first 2 games at home. After that, all bets are off! Look at the number of 3 or 4 ranked teams that have done quite well in the past couple of years.

How quickly we all forget! Grayson finally wins 1 state title which they got help with against Colquitt Co thank you and people start talking about them Lol are you kidding? Nobody wants to talk about those two late pass interference calls that helped them win! Grayson still isnt apart of the Gwinnett County Kings of the Rings! Ya Know, Parkview 4 time champ, Brookwood, and of course Buford!!!! The Real Champions of Gwinnett! As far as the Nkemdiche Kid goes, every body knows the Kid at Milton,Carl Lawson is 10 times better! Lawson is stronger, more explosive, and way more agressive! I feel sorry that people have just penciled this kid at Grayson in as the number 1 player and he really isn’t deserving. I have watched him play for the last 2 years and he is not the number one player in the country. Yes he is one of the top players in the state but he really just doesn’t do the things that people write about. I have seen him comparried to Bo Jackson, Hershel Walker, and even LT? Are you for real? How dare this childs name be mentioned in the same sentence as these football icons!!! The fact that he tries to run the ball is a joke! Come on Grayson try something else it won’t fly again! His hand will go down in the dirt at the next level and you probably won’t hear from him again cause he is not aggressive enough. Thank God College coaches don’t believe all this hype and actually look at hours of film to see what players can actually do.

In football this year they boast 34 seniors. I think they have just as good of a chance to win state as Grayson does again! Lol!

Not this year

Grayson’s D will be very good this year, but they had better be in shape as well. The O lost the TE and 4 of the 5 linemen plus major RB. Anyone who knows football knows that Grayson’s O line controlled games last year and that will not be the case this year. All of those pre-season polls take the previous season into consideration way too much. Grayson will not even win their own region this year, much less be a #2 team in the country. They lost too many crucial players. They will be well coached and hard to score on, but I think that they will struggle to score just as much if not more than the teams they play. I am interested to see who plays there this year that did not attend the school last year. Good players and their parents will make a legal move to a school for athletic reasons, this happens every year. Can’t wait until this season gets started so all the questions will be answered. I think that with their coach and 30-something returners, Colquitt Co. will win the first 6A football state championship.

@God Given Ability – I don’t know where you have been hiding but the two correctly called interference calls against Colquitt have been discussed till most of us turned blue (there were/are some still green with envy). Just to recap, there is no concept of “un-catchable” in high school. The Packers lost their discipline on the last drive and in their effort to stop the Rams, committed several mistakes. By the way, you are right. College coaches don’t just watch film. They come out to the games and practices and watch which is what they have been doing with Robert. Coaches and scouts show up regularly to see for themselves. As far as Robert running the ball, so far he has been pretty successful. He has been stopped a time or two and is not a long run threat but on shorter runs he has been pretty effective.

I assume you are talking about football championships since this is a football discussion and you talk about Parkview’s 4 rings. You mention Brookwood as a part of the “Kings of the Rings.” I guess you don’t realize that Brookwood has 2 football championships – a total of 1 more than Grayson. I’m not talking down to Brookwood at all because they have a great program and 2 rings are something to be proud of. You also left out Peachtree Ridge who was co-champ in 2006.

@sec? – I believe the current 2012 region6 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS are Tucker (2), SWD (2), and Lakeside-DeKalb (3). Nowhere in comparison to 2012 6A region 1. The lower classifications change so often, teams and some have changed school names, due to many different factors, that it’s difficult to keep track of # of State Championships, per region. EX: Last year the region had Marist (2) and Douglass which would add to that number. I know 6A region 1 has had changes over the years, but most recent, it has been pretty much stable, with this years’ addition of Camden. Soon, the AJC will be breaking the articles in classification sections and we bloggers will tend to stay close to our supported classification. So to squash this augment, we 5A Region 6 fans will be chest beating, that our region is the SEC of GA HS football (LOL) and I do expect the fans of 6A Region 1 to be doing the same, within our own blogs. I would agree with your answer to G-dub about “What’s the main goal for every high school football player?” As an ex HS football player, many-many-many years ago, I played the game to win STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS, with the dream of playing in the NFL and I believe many others would tend to agree.

@sec…You are living in the past. Wake up, what have you done lately? @5AReg6Fan…I think that the ultimate goal of most little league football players is to play in the NFL. State championship games are great if that’s as far as you can go but I think 90% of players mindset and ultimate goal is NFL. @sec…Who said that I was a Stephenson fan. I know Camden is the New Kid on the block in Region 1 and I know Camden doesn’t have a chance of competing in this region for 6 weeks each year. With all that said, if people believe Camden is not going to be completive against any team, you have a surprise coming. Yes it will be a challenge in Region 1 but beating us may not be so easy. Looking forward to a great year of High School Football.

Colquitt vs Grayson has already become a rivalry and
Ga HS football has become the most fun to watch. Not only is top-notch talent spread throughout the state, look at the ledgendary coaches Ga has now. I love the fact that Ga crowns 1 Champ. I have to say that Reg. 1AAAAAA is the toughest and I believe the majority of State Champs WILL come from said region….again I base that prediction on the fact that I have watched every game in every classification in Ga as well as other states and Super 25 games. Noteworthy is the fact Rush Propst has Colquitt turned now and ready to dominate and in case you didnt know Colquitt added Hoover, Al for 2yrs.Can’t wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Kayton Samuels – First, it’s good to hear from a fan of Arabia Mountain and hopefully you along with other Rams supporters will be blogging right along with all the other fans of 5A Region 6. 2012 brings Arabia Mountain two classifications up and into ONE of the toughest region in all of 5A football…this is a MAJOR step for a young football team. Any region victories the Rams receive this year will be a plus and yes, it will be SURPRISING, except maybe on a couple. The best region record I see for the Rams is 3-7 with victories over (1) Clarkston…which shouldn’t count as a region game (W or L), due to Clarkston not playing a true region schedule, (2) North Atlanta, and (3) Lakeside DeKalb. But honestly, is going to be more like 2-8, with potential victories over Clarkston and North Atlanta. The 2012 objective for Arabia Mountain football team, is to learn and try to keep the games close and entertaining, this will be the SURPRISE. The Rams third game of the season will tell it all, facing the Jaguars of Stephenson. Remember the Rams are playing DeKalb and Fulton’s BEST in 5A. Nothing left to say – Welcome Arabia Mountain Rams to one of GA’S HS football POWERHOUSE regions and GOOD LUCK!!!!

Grayson is overrated this year. THEY DID LOSE MANY KEY PLAYERS. I am a gwinnett and grayson fan myself, but the o line this year will be much smaller, but definitely quicker. I expect to see a more fit Grayson team this year, but as for another championship, I highly doubt it.

The only reason Walton made it to the Title game was because their side of the bracket was not as brutal. Granted, they had a good solid football team, but their road to the Title game was tough, but not brutal. That’s why winning the Region Title is soooo important!! Valdosta won the Region 1 Title last year, but got upset by Newnan. If they would’ve gotten by Newnan, then I believe Valdosta could’ve made it to the Title game. Better yet, If Colquitt Co. would have won the Region Title, It would have been Colquitt Co. vs Grayson in the Title game. The same goes for Lowndes. Lowndes and Brookwood was the only two teams that gave Grayson problems.

Dosta Dawgs…….the cats won the region yes…….but yall got embarrassed in round 1…….lowndes had a better team……..we put it on cruise control after we dominated yall last year for every min of the game except the last min and a half………..i give it to yall…….yall didnt give up and yall outcoached and outplayed us at the very end of that game……..we were left with a hangover and we didnt care if we beat colquitt or not. if we had beat yall……..then we would have either beat colquitt or it would have been a lot closer…….we were just out of it in that game bc of losing like we did to yall……

i was proud of us going up to stephenson and beating them on their home turf…….shutting them out in the process……..after they had just put up 49 on mlk…….and i was proud of us giving grayson a fight…..we led at one point……we just did not have the experience at qb last year…….thats all we needed to take the next step last year

Those games from a year ago are gone and all is new. New Regions, new classes. For some, not many, new opponents with whom there is no history. Don’t get upset ! Add this to the early regular season competition of high quality non region schedules plus the possible losses in the “Classic” and you can rest assured that a couple “POWERS” will go down and leave many to wonder what happened? Region 1 – 6A will feel the pain of itself. The results of having such a strong group of teams playing for a precious spot in the 2nd. season. I am sure Coffee, Brunswick and Tift are not going to lay down and let the other guy’s walk all over them ! Those three schools will have a lot to say about who makes it to the Dome. Seems as if I am dreaming and it is a memory from this past season where there was predicted an all Warner Robins Final AAAA. Colquitt County won the region championship in 1994, 1995, 1996, &1999. Check the facts at http://ghsfha.org. They won their only state title in 1994 when they defeated Valdosta 23-10. @ WILDHAWG2012 == It is an excuse. This was Lovejoys fifth 7 on 7 of the summer. You think having a conversation about Lovejoy is troubling now, wait until Sept. 7th. I am surprised that you give them so little respect. In terms of class, 6 of the last 10 years Lovejoy has played in the highest class and have always been competitive. True, there is not much history but that will change given time. Some people think a class move is a big deal, well for some it is, not for a program that was changing classes when you guy’s were changing regions. In 02′-05′, Lovejoy was a member of AAAAA. 06′ & 07, they were AAAA and then back to AAAAA for the years of 08′ & 09′, before goi ng to AAAA for the last 2 years. The Packers have N. Gwinnett followed by a visit to TCC followed by a visit from Lovejoy and then you have Carver-Columbus. Wishful thinking is one thing but you better beware. Never mind region. For the sake of playoff positioning, you need all you can get and with non-region games against teams from your class, you might want to not look past anyone, including Lovejoy.

packerchick

July 31st, 2012

I think, and certainly hope, that the Packers will not look past anyone. Although, I know that we have been guilty of it in the past. Last year’s Valdosta game is a prime example. I could tell when they came out on the field that they were not pumped up like they should have been, Valdosta was, and it showed. I believe the guys got a taste of Lovejoy and that they will definitely be ready to make this game end differently. It should be an exciting game!

Region 1-AAAAAA sure has some strong voices here. “SEC of GA High School Football” etc. Since talent on the field each year has a sense of unpredictability, who knows? How about letting the kids play on the field and decide for themselves?

Big mouths, I believe, tend to help the OTHER team more than they help their own, since BIG MOUTHS provide extra motivation for their opponents, that is, if anybody pays attention.

Brookwood and Grayson have been fine mainly doing their talking on the football field. @Fred for Grayson represents that kind of class. Grayson has a tremendous defense, Brookwood has a returning QB and a wide receiver import from Florida headed to UGA. Grayson comes to Brookwood this year. Should be electric once more (climbed a fence with my son to get in to the Grayson game last year – I DID PAY!)

Hate a high school team? I recommend therapy, confession, and if you refuse both, how about a spanking then taping your mouth shut and breaking your keyboard so you won’t bore us?

I am looking forward to Camden playing in 1-AAAAAA this year, for sure, they’re in a REAL region. They’ll be my favorite to win it all with the QB they have until results on the field say otherwise.

I have to keep in mind they ARE High School kids. Brookwood lost in the 2nd round to MLK last year allowing a forty yard TD pass on the last play of regulation to tie. No defender was near the receiver. Then the Broncos lost in OT. This ain’t rocket science.

So, anyway, it’s not my style to claim Brookwood is the GREATEST team this year even before a scrimmage takes place. As a matter of fact, such idiocy, such absolute foolishness, shames the high school one claims to represent.

Here’s looking forward to a classy, fun exchange of folks that love Georgia High School Football.

Let’s see. Since 2000, Colquit has gone 81 – 57. In that same span, Lovejoy has gone 88 – 47. Well what do ya know ? Never would have guessed that ! How is it that they are continously regarded as one of the best teams in national polls and they can’t win or haven’t won their own region since 99′ ? Will you please call NSWR and asked them if they played in the Dome on Dec. 9th, 2011. I’m pretty sure Lovejoy was there. Did you know that 90% of Georgia football teams would love to be in their shoes ? Yeah, we did go undefeated. That makes two regular seasons in a row now. What are you guy’s, 20 – 9 over the past two years ? Still, the numbers don’t lie. We sit at 24 – 2 over that span with a trip to the Championship game. We do not need your respect, I just thought you were an open-minded football fan who could give credit to those who have earned it. Honestly, until 09′, Colquit had not won more than 6 games in a season since 01′. Your State title came in 94′. How can they be so highly regarded when you look at their record. Supposedly, long term sucess is the criteria for certain recognition. I wonder what it is for Colquit.?

@sportsnut – I wouldn’t aggravate Colquitt County all that much. Rich Probst is one heck of a coach, he’s been there for the last four years only, his teams have run up 31 points on Grayson twice in the last two years (1-1), and 38 on Brookwood two years ago, even though they lost. Despite their sucess, many will continue to doubt them until they find out differently for themselves, which Colquit will have an opportunity to do come Sept. 7th. And we won’t tell anyone about 2010 when u guys were 10-0 and lost at home to Glyn Acadamy 7-6??? I mean a fourth seeded team really??? They are a good team that can up and bite you! Now, I will agree they talk a BIG game and are somewhat proud but they have come a long way in the past 4 years and have reason to be proud. Don’t fall into the trap of believing they are all talk because as much as they talk, at least part of it is true.

who gives a crap about 7 on 7 championships and competition……..you can throw this higwash out the window afetr the season starts.,…….For example……my team..LOWNDES of course is not going to shine in a 7 on 7 against an elite passing team bc we are a “RUNNING” team…..your teams that are pass first are usually going to be better against teams who are not known for an elite air attack…….dont look to much into these 7 on 7″s…….this is about like winning the hot dog eating contest as far as i am concerned……..who give a hoot………

Lovejoy will beat colquitt………mark that down in your notebook wildhawg……

when prospt runs out of alabama graduated recruits then colquitt will still be good but not what they are with all these recruits

Lowndes 9th grade last year went undefeated……beating colquitt each time they played…….and they are now going to be 10th graders…….Lowndes 8th grade squad last year also went undefeated and beat colquitt both times……..When these 2 classes merge to make the varsity in a few years Lowndes will bring home another state title………best talent lowndes has had since the run we made in 04-09…….this year lowndes makes playoffs…….but i think its colquitts or camdens region to lose……Lowndes will be solid as it always is and may can pull it off but lowndes best years is still aother 2 years away in my opinon……..

@bksmith14 Hello and welcome to the conversation. You are right about the 7-on-7 games and no Lowndes won’t win most of those but when its time to play as a whole team you can bet Lowndes will be ready!! I can’t explain to sportsnut that i am concerned about my region games (Lowndes,Valdosta, and Camden) comand attention from anyone dont you agree. I mean if we loose all three of those games then we might not even make the playoffs but we can loose all of our non-region games and still make playoffs. So if we did loose to Lovejoy it really won’t effect our playoff chances either way. But giving Lovejoy the same respect i give Lowndes,Valdosta,Camden,Grayson and Brookwood is well stupid!! Lovejoy can beat the pack i mean anygiven friday anyone can loose so i never said Lovejoy couldn’t beat the pack but it is not a game that i am really concernded about until its time to play them. Now u did take some shots at us but its cool but i don’t understand what the 8th and 9th grade teams have to do with this so are u saying Lowndes won’t be better than last year because i don’t know what Lowndes has this year but i do know they will be competative. It does sound like you don’t have faith in this quad this year if you are hanging your hat on some 8th and 9th graders. You do have some upperclassmen on this team but from this conversation maybe they don’t meet your approval as a championship team. With the stuff that Lowndes has done over the last 10 years i would expect you to be more comfident about your team than me.

Nice to hear from you too, FridayNightLightsFan. Hope you have a good season. Time for the lesson to begin. WILDHAWG, from 2000 – 2010, neither did Colquit make it past the 2nd. round. In 05′, you made it to the second round. Not until 09′ did you make it past the 2nd. round. For those that do not know, Lovejoy sits in a strange spot geographically and is the largest school in the metro area that is closest to the South Georgia schools and this is why they are always changing classes.Lovejoy has not dominated anything. If Mundy’s Mill had not opened in 04′, then we could say maybe they were dominant, given that they were 45 – 13 from 2000 – 04′. I am so glad that you guy’s are not afraid, why should you be ? Hey Fred, I am only stating facts. Not meaning to downgrade or berate. This is great ! By the way Fred, all of Emory is in Atlanta, look it up. @ bksmith == I understand about the 8th and 9th graders and what they will bring to some teams. We have up-coming 10th graders who played last year and will be much better for their experience and this adds depth. Look at Grayson, they have no 9th or 10th graders as they choose to play only Jrs. and Srs. on varsity. Our JV went 7 – 0 this past year and this is good for the varsity. I want my team to win every game, so each team is a concern for me. I will be at the Dome on the 25th to see exactly who has what.

@sportsnut – Don’t have to look it up, I see it everyday. Sometimes *you* don’t know what you think you do. ALL of the Clifton Rd campus is in DeKalb Co, not in Decatur, not in Atlanta. Perhaps you might want to look it up.

All you guys that know me on here….you guys know i dont “sugar coat” anything…….i call it like i see it whether its steps on your toes or not……so yall can give it back to me if you want to……bc if you can dish it out you got to be able to take it!!……

As for this year….Lowndes will have a talented backfield……..#21 Nicholas Burgman (sr) ….and # 2 Tiquan Lang (sr) are going to be 2 of our biggest playmakers……also # 4 Ahmad Brown (sophmore) will factor in at rb as well…….as he ran all over stephenson in the 4th qtr as a feshman………if you remember grayson fans he also had a costly fumble against you guys deep in our own territory that you guys converted into a td……..which really put the icing on the cake as far as you guys defeating us if you ask me…….it was a heck of a battle up until that mistake by the freshman……..

Lowndes secondary returns ALL EXCEPT Clemons……..so i think we will actually be better there bc of experience……

Our Oline is already much better than last year…Anchored by # seniors #61 Center ( 5″11 260) #76 Rt (6″4 310) And #74 Lt (6″1 260″)

We are going to have a Qb who can throw the ball if we have to this year…..he is not John elway but an upgarde from last year passing wise……..Our Qb last year had the heart of a lion but the size of mouse…….

Lowndes Has a lot of speed…….and we have a stud at Lb……guy looks like he has been chizzled out of stone…..#17 tre jackson…….Looks like Arnold Schwarznager with shirt off……he is only a junior

My Biggest concern is our D line……..We only return the noseguard…..we are smaller on the dline but we are a lot quicker……..Time will tell………

I feel lowndes will be just as good i not better than last years team…….but we have colquiitt …valdosta and camden…..I doubt anyone runs the region undefeated this year……

Colquitt returns the most on both sides of the ball (yall did lose two bama recruits who were huge factors in yalls success last year) woodyard and washington rb and lb/rb

Brice Ramsey for camden is a stud…kid is going to GA ……at the qb position………and jj green is a lightning bolt………

Lowndes will not be an easy out and the top 4 seeds out of this region will be a team nobody wants to have to play come playoff time……..bc they will be battle tested to say the least……..

tifton and coffee will be no pushovers either……

I say Colquitt….Camden…..Either Lowndes or Valdosts for 3rd in region …and whoever doesnt get 3rd will get 4th……..but who knows……..

lowndes went 6-4 in 2006 and then won the title in 2007 when i didnt even think we would

@sportnut – it is Dowman Drive, not Dorman. That mailing address has an Atlanta post office zip but I can assure you that the Atlanta city limits are at least 2 miles away. Similar to the Decatur address going all the way to south DeKalb and Lithonia. A map will work wonders for you. Sometimes what you read on the internet may not be authoritative so be prepared to take it with a grain of salt. In this case, 32+ years of looking at it everyday trumps a post office listing. ;-)

@ Fred == You made my point. My knowledge is not based on a book or the device that we are currently using. I attended Druid Hills in the 70’s and knew all along where it is located. The original statement was that ” DHHS sits next to Emory in Atlanta but Dekalb”.Now let’s talk football. Maybe Emory can field a team one day. What do you think ?

Fred

Emory Football is still undefeated and Emory is still in DeKalb not Atlanta. ” By the way Fred, all of Emory is in Atlanta, look it up.” In any case, it is probably immaterial as I don’t really expect Druid Hills to become a sudden contender this year or any in the foreseeable future! I would say they are the poster child for all that is wrong with DeKalb sports! No practice facilities to speak of, their home field is a shared stadium several miles away, etc. Great school but not a football power house for sure. In fact, when you look at it, it is a miracle that DeKalb schools are competitive at all! The old days of athletic glory for DeKalb seem to be destined to not be repeated.

@ Fred == You never know. I went to their spring game and coaching seems to be more of a problem than a small talent pool. I know a couple of the kids and their parents and they are optimistic about the future. They had a group on the 8th grade team that only lost one game and the coach wants to start them this year on varsity. If this group stays together and healthy, they could beat a few teams this year. They have Morrow, who has won only about 6 games in the last 5 years. Rockdale County and Alcovy could be wins. They open with Clarkston, who is in the region with Tucker,SWD, MLK and Stephenson but are playing a non-region schedule. Another possible win. It may sound far fetched but, with this region, someone has to make the playoff’s. Lovejoy

Have u guys ever been to Colquit before cause if u haven’t then i understand why u talkin like u are. Remember when Tucker defence punched you guys in the mouth and u never recovered?? Well thats our region every friday night!!! But i do understand their that their is a light at the end of the tunnel for u all this year. you all should make the playoffs for the first time considering u are in one of the weakest regions in 6A.Take away Colquit and East Coweta and you have a cupcake schedule so that is a real strong possibility u all could make the playoffs at the highest class since 2004. And about our schedule well every year we play about at least 7 or more playoff teams before the playoffs even begin. We don’t do cupcakes that much cause it doen’t help us out at region or playoff time.

@ WILDHAWG2012 == I am glad you find it hard not to talk football. Never really liked that uniform. I like the Corolina Blue much better. This is what it is supposed to be. Football fans with high school ties and pride, exchanging good nature ribbing and pulling for some of the best high school football in the nation. We have never been to Colquit but are looking foward to our visit. All my comments are fact based and I support this team completely. I have only missed 5 games in the 12 years that I have lived in Lovejoy. If you want the truth about the Tucker game, they beat us. Although we lost, this was a great moment for us. It was never considered that in the first half, Tucker had 199 yards of offense while scoring 15 pts. Tucker was averaging 43 ppg in the playoff’s. They ended the game with a total of 271 yards which means they only gained 72 in the second half. If you look at Lovejoy closely, you will find a good team that plays better in the second half. I am not quite sure what you mean that we should make the playoff’s for the first time. In what context are you speaking ? We do have a soft schedule but that is not of our doing. Think what it would be if the coach did not take those four teams to add to the schedule. Alpharetta, East Coweta and Colquit more than likely will be our toughest test but you never know. These teams may not be cupcakes but they are not world beaters either. I see you played Tift, Coffee, Westlake(we had them with cam), TCC, WR, Jenkins, Mill Creek Randolph – Clay, Thomasville, Lee County, stop, thats enough. Every team plays it’s share of lesser gifted teams and that is just part of the game. We have done Lowdnes before and we are 1 – 2 against them, all playoff games. We lost to them in 99′ and 01′, both in the 2nd. round. We beat them in 02′ in the first round. We played Coffee once and won in 03 in the 1st. round.

About the druid hills situation @sportsnut …The kids at druid hills are very good and they all work together….I went to there practice on monday and they seem Very Discipline.. When they was warming up it was complete silence and I see them being a contender in 6A play….Also I met 4 studs on they team that wants to win…. Jaquan Johnson 6-2 160 broke A record in kick returns in dekalb county football…. Deandre Byrd 6-1 215 is a leader and the best linebacker in the county…. Desi Bigby 6-3 260 is a dtackle that went to many camps this year…,this kid is fast and strong and plays like cant nobody stop him…I talked to Desi and asked him how does he feel to play in the top class of high school football in georgia and he says that every team in the region are working hard to better themselves..he says that every team goes through 2 a days like they do and he is going into the season with a chip on his shoulder…He is a great kid and I can see him playing some division 1 football..

@ Fear the Spear == Talked to Desi on yesterday and he has good words for a couple of newcomers in Qua Huff and Trevino Huff. They are cousins and are 9th and 10 graders. Qua will play primarily at safety and Trevino at running back. Keep up with those names as they come from the same youth organization that many Tucker athletes come from before being stolen by Tucker Youth. It may not be this year but in time they will compete As I stated before, coaching may be their biggest problem. I don’t think they realize. how hard they need to work and he also needs to get the right people in the right places. He has speed and athleticism in many players but needs more. He should hit the hallways as soon as school starts to recruit. He has the student population to recruit from so he needs to get busy. If their Qb. can get his head together, he can win some games on his abilities alone. I wish them luck on the incoming year.

Also Desi along with Jaquan johnson and more seniors has great potential to play D1 football…besides jaquan runs a 4.3. Lowndes 4-2

I’m not worried about one or two players to be honest with you. I’m worried about the 26 defensive players your Coach is going to be rotating in and out. That’s going to be HUGE in the 4th quarter!! When everybody’s tired and can’t get off blocks, here they come with fresh legs, getting off tackles/blocks, flying to the ball. That’s my only concern…

bksmith14

August 13th, 2012

i am not concerned about it at all………..not worried about bringing in jv players as defensive subs………last year colquitt had a great o line………this year is a ? for them at the postion other than opctavious………..they lost 3 HUGE components ……..ty smith was huge for them on offense……..and shermaine washington at lb #12 he was huge on short yardage situations and also on stopping the run………..I look for colquitt to be good no doubt but they will be beatable just like they were last year and i really think last year they were more explsoive on offense…………When you take a guy like ty smith away who scored a lot of your tds and you take woodyard away at rb and washington who wd get you first downs on 3 and 1 or 2 then you lose a lot….ot saying the guys coming up to take their place wont be good but its hard to replace talent like that year in and year out

You’re right – but we’ll see – I believe Lowndes can still be victorious over Colquitt Co. this year. I mean – Valdosta beat them last year – and we had Valdosta, and let it slip away.

colquitt has more talent than lowndes does this year…….lowndes has some good players and we have a lot of speed……..and also coach mac has taken back over the playcalling duties which he has not done the last 2 years……..lowndes has a shot…colquitt will have to play good ball and execute to beat lowndes but i will stand firm in saying that lowndes will be solid this year……..but i still feel lowndes is 2 years away from having another great team

First of all Tucker should definitely be in the mix as top ranked, I wathced them scrimmage Stephenson Jaguars (15 D1 recruits) last year and they beat them every way but the scoreboard. There Head Coach is brilliant and a class act and his boys respect him. I admire what Grayson accomplished last year but Colquitt is a more sound disciplined football team. Having said all that, Keep an eye on the forgotten Parkview Panthers; they have 34 Seniors; a big and quick experienced offensive line,a talented running back, a fast hard nosed tough senior QB and 10 veterans returning on a fast defense with depth at the corners.

@ PPanther…You mean the same “sound discipline” that cost Colquitt a trip to the dome last season? Which personal foul was “sound discipline”?…Just curious. LOL You are just a Grayson hater.

I think it was 2 pass interference calls on 2 balls thrown 15 yards over the receivers head. No personal fouls in that game at all.

It doesn’t matter personal foul or pass interference. They fell apart discipline wise. Simple as that.

No matter how you look at it, someone will have a loss come Aug. 26th. AAAAAA is a crap shoot. You will not be afforded many mistakes this year. Region 1 will be tough enough without allowing surprises that are of a negative nature. Do you really think Colquit and Camden can afford a setback so early? North Gwinnett and Peachtree Ridge are formidable opponents that could win these games. It may not be region but it is against fellow class members and could come into play when seeding comes around. We don’t want to hear about playoff structure. Win them all or as many as you can to ensure a favorable slot in the bracket. This seems to be a concern for the South Georgia schools. Take care of business all season and you have no need to worry about such things.

I highly doubt that a loss in the Corky Kell would hurt any of the ten teams when the playoffs arrive. Certainly a win will go a long way in building team confidence and momentum, but realistically these teams are going to have to win their regions to get favorable seeding.

I’m excited to see Peachtree Ridge’s defense bow up against a stout Camden offense. Also curious as to how long NG can play with Colquitt. I think Colquitt fans will be surprised with how good NG’s defense is again this year, but I hope Colquitt’s defense doesn’t hurt to many of NG’s offensive players! I’ll know more for sure after NG plays Stephenson on Friday, and Colquitt plays Norcross. Good health to all this weekend!

Wow, alot of noise on here this week! A newcomer “Kayton Samuels” one of my former football prodigies is making bold statements about a team that has yet to taste this kind of competition, Jab is already at his usual pestimistic pose, Sportsnut is in a new region and classification… feels weird, Cannon rules is already shooting off his big… CANNON, so this can only mean one thing….. IT’s GOTTA BE FOOTBALL SEASON!!!!

Then Tucker Tigers are primed for another great season with many key players coming back. This year our defense will feature a missing piece from last years team to hold the middle down. 6′6 300lbs nose guard Eliajh Shaw. Returning seniors to anchor us like the “hitman” Austin Benton, the “hammer” Soloman Jackson, the straw that stirs our drink, Juwaan Williams QB.

There will be a host of other Juniors that either started or played significant minutes on last years state championship team.

By the way… sec? on your statement about the 5A class being D2, we are only a couple of hundred students away from being 6A. All that means is that you will have more players on your sidelines than us but that doesn’t mean that you can out play us. That only means that when your 9th grade and JV suit up with your Varsity team on Friday night, your sideline just looks bigger. That 11 man group that you run on the field on offense and defense will still have to deal with us. The 9th grade and JV can’t help you there!

All I got to say is “If we can’t get along, then let’s get it on”! It’s football season, welcome to the best divison in highschool football Region 6 class 5AAAAA!

@ Camden 74 == It appears that he is capable of making a difference for a team. He is a 3 -Star athlete with a QB rating of 5.6 on a scale of 6.1, according to Rivals. A pro=style qb that did well at the Dallas Elite 11 camp. He had a total of 16 offers and showed no intrest to anyone but Arizona State, to whom he committed. His other offers came from:: Arkansas St.
Boston College
Duke
Harvard

Desi had 5 tackles and 1 for lost and he only played defense for just 1 quarter and played for 2 minutes in 3rd!! They got a wide reciever named Jaquan johnson who had 4 touchdowns and is getting highly recruited!! Desi had a good offensive game!! And there quarterback is very good!! Also Trevino Huff had a 52 yard run on varsity!! It let’s you know how good druid hills oline is going to be!! Trust me druid hills is ready to play in 6A and Lovejoy will not win easily

From Valdosta living in Fort Worth,Tx. Seen both high school games played Ga by far kicks Tx. Ga. Football plays better defense. Texas teams will throw more but couldn’t handle the pressure of the defense. I think Valdosta ,Lowndes,Grayson and many other Ga. Teams would kick Texas best.Fla. schools would too.
