It’s been 20 years since a Georgia high school football team has won a national championship. Grayson, a returning state champion in Georgia’s highest classification, is poised to make a run.
This week, the Rams were ranked No. 2 in preseason by MaxPreps in the first major national poll. Grayson was 15-0 last season and finished in the top five of several national rankings. This season, 10 of 11 defensive starters return, including defensive end Robert Nkemdiche, the 2011 all-classification player of the year.
‘’Grayson should have the country’s best defense, and their offense, with the amount of skill it returns, will be just fine,’’ said Stephen Spiewak, editor of MaxPreps’ national football rankings. “I do expect them to return to a more run-based offense to which the program has been more accustomed. Not to mention, no matter which team Grayson plays, it will always have the single best player on the field [in Nkemdiche].’’
Ranked No. 1 is Manatee of Bradenton, Fla. Grayson and Manatee will have one common opponent – Central of Miami. Grayson plays Central on Aug. 31 at Grayson.
Another Georgia team is in MaxPreps’ top 25. That’s Colquitt County at No. 18.
‘’Colquitt seems to have a good blend of veteran leadership and talented youth,’’ Spiewak said. “I really think Cole Segraves is going to have a huge senior season. It came extremely close to beating Grayson last year and would give them a game this season as well. Overall, I think it’s going to be a very good year for high school football in Georgia.
The most recent Georgia team to win a national title was Valdosta, which was selected in 1992 by the National Prep Poll and the National Sports News Service.

In reponse to DOSTA DAWGS comments. “Region 1AAAAA or excuse me Region1AAAAAA must be a really tough region, because every year Colquitt is ranked nationally but hasn’t won the region title since 1994!!!!!”
Colquitt County won the region championship in 1994, 1995, 1996, &1999. Check the facts at http://ghsfha.org. They won their only state title in 1994 when they defeated Valdosta 23-10. In fact the Packers finished 15-0 that year and the Cats finished 13-2. Both defeats at the hands of Colquitt County.

tomorrow Colquitt Co plays Lassitter in the national 7 on 7 tournament in Hoover Al. This in my opinion is a preview of the 6A state Championship!!!! It may sound a little far fetch but even tho i am a Packer Backer to my heart, I would not sleep on Lassitter to make a run at state. I mean we do have a long way to go to get to the Big Game and their are at least 5 or more very good teams that could and would challenge Colquitt for the championship but this Lassitter team has some serious firepower and should make it to the Big Game to face The Pack Attack!!!! But defense still wins championships and ours is a lil better than Lassitters!!! Can’t wait for the season Go Pack!!!

@sportsnut I understand Lovejoy did look good in hoover but fatigue has begun to set in on the pack.I know it sounds like an excuse but just 5 days earlier we had just won a 7-on-7 in moultrie and an extra point on that game is 2 of our starters didn’t play and i dont think our best reciever finished that game either if he even played cause of an injury. And yes i am looking forward to our region games because they are the games that really matter. I mean to be even entertaining a conversation about Lovejoy is something that is somewhat mindboggling even to myself. I mean what has Lovejoy done in the biggest classifacation that is worthy of a discusion.I mean they moved up to the biggest classification and i congratulate u guys but please understand this is a whole different level of football so i can’t wait for the fun to begin good luck!!!

@ WILDHAWG2012 == It is an excuse. This was Lovejoys fifth 7 on 7 of the summer. You think having a conversation about Lovejoy is troubling now, wait until Sept. 7th. I am surprised that you give them so little respect. In terms of class, 6 of the last 10 years Lovejoy has played in the highest class and have always been competitive. True, there is not much history but that will change given time. Some people think a class move is a big deal, well for some it is, not for a program that was changing classes when you guy’s were changing regions. In 02′-05′, Lovejoy was a member of AAAAA. 06′ & 07, they were AAAA and then back to AAAAA for the years of 08′ & 09′, before goi ng to AAAA for the last 2 years. The Packers have N. Gwinnett followed by a visit to TCC followed by a visit from Lovejoy and then you have Carver-Columbus. Wishful thinking is one thing but you better beware. Never mind region. For the sake of playoff positioning, you need all you can get and with non-region games against teams from your class, you might want to not look past anyone, including Lovejoy.

I think, and certainly hope, that the Packers will not look past anyone. Although, I know that we have been guilty of it in the past. Last year’s Valdosta game is a prime example. I could tell when they came out on the field that they were not pumped up like they should have been, Valdosta was, and it showed. I believe the guys got a taste of Lovejoy and that they will definitely be ready to make this game end differently. It should be an exciting game!

@sportsnut Look man just because your school keeps changing classification every 2 years or so doesn’t mea n anything two me. I mean even when you guys were in the biggest classification you couln’t even get out of the second round!! Lovejoy will be competative but so will a hand full of other teams in 6A. You can’t seem to figure out why i give Lovejoy so little respect, well if my memory service me correctly you guys went to the chapionship last year and everyone said that the Tucker/Northside W.Robins game was the real championship game. So you want me to give them respect when 90 % of Ga said they shouldn’t be playing in the big game oh and did i mention you guys were undefeated and still no respect!! WOW!!! So when you earn respect i will give it to you

Region 1-AAAAAA sure has some strong voices here. “SEC of GA High School Football” etc. Since talent on the field each year has a sense of unpredictability, who knows? How about letting the kids play on the field and decide for themselves?
Big mouths, I believe, tend to help the OTHER team more than they help their own, since BIG MOUTHS provide extra motivation for their opponents, that is, if anybody pays attention.
Brookwood and Grayson have been fine mainly doing their talking on the football field. @Fred for Grayson represents that kind of class. Grayson has a tremendous defense, Brookwood has a returning QB and a wide receiver import from Florida headed to UGA. Grayson comes to Brookwood this year. Should be electric once more (climbed a fence with my son to get in to the Grayson game last year – I DID PAY!)
Hate a high school team? I recommend therapy, confession, and if you refuse both, how about a spanking then taping your mouth shut and breaking your keyboard so you won’t bore us?
I am looking forward to Camden playing in 1-AAAAAA this year, for sure, they’re in a REAL region. They’ll be my favorite to win it all with the QB they have until results on the field say otherwise.
I have to keep in mind they ARE High School kids. Brookwood lost in the 2nd round to MLK last year allowing a forty yard TD pass on the last play of regulation to tie. No defender was near the receiver. Then the Broncos lost in OT. This ain’t rocket science.
So, anyway, it’s not my style to claim Brookwood is the GREATEST team this year even before a scrimmage takes place. As a matter of fact, such idiocy, such absolute foolishness, shames the high school one claims to represent.
Here’s looking forward to a classy, fun exchange of folks that love Georgia High School Football.

Let’s see. Since 2000, Colquit has gone 81 – 57. In that same span, Lovejoy has gone 88 – 47. Well what do ya know ? Never would have guessed that ! How is it that they are continously regarded as one of the best teams in national polls and they can’t win or haven’t won their own region since 99′ ? Will you please call NSWR and asked them if they played in the Dome on Dec. 9th, 2011. I’m pretty sure Lovejoy was there. Did you know that 90% of Georgia football teams would love to be in their shoes ? Yeah, we did go undefeated. That makes two regular seasons in a row now. What are you guy’s, 20 – 9 over the past two years ? Still, the numbers don’t lie. We sit at 24 – 2 over that span with a trip to the Championship game. We do not need your respect, I just thought you were an open-minded football fan who could give credit to those who have earned it. Honestly, until 09′, Colquit had not won more than 6 games in a season since 01′. Your State title came in 94′. How can they be so highly regarded when you look at their record. Supposedly, long term sucess is the criteria for certain recognition. I wonder what it is for Colquit.?

@sportsnut – I wouldn’t aggravate Colquitt County all that much. Rich Probst is one heck of a coach, he’s been there for the last four years only, his teams have run up 31 points on Grayson twice in the last two years (1-1), and 38 on Brookwood two years ago, even though they lost. They can flat out play. Good luck to Lovejoy this year in maintaining a 1 loss season. I wouldn’t count on it. Nobody in Gwinnett takes them lightly, believe me.

@ GwinnettDad == Not meaning to aggravate, just educate. I really like to banter back and forth with those who feel a certain program is superior. I went through the same thing last season as I tried to tell people not to overlook Lovejoy. Despite their sucess, many will continue to doubt them until they find out differently for themselves, which Colquit will have an opportunity to do come Sept. 7th. I am looking foward to a great game between two teams that have aspirations of winning the whole thing. I just hope both are loss-free when they meet. If Lovejoy does get by them, expect another deep run into the 2nd. season.

And we won’t tell anyone about 2010 when u guys were 10-0 and lost at home to Glyn Acadamy 7-6??? I mean a fourth seeded team really??? So tell me why i should respect Lovejoy again!!! and no i am not overlooking anyone i mean just about every year in the 10 games before playoffs that we play at least about 7 of the teams are playoff teams anyway. We are used to playing tough non-region games but it doesn’t scare us at all.

@WILDHAWG2012 I noticed this last year as well. Lovejoy’s enrollment put them well into the 5A. So yes they did better in 4A but it helps when you have more people to pick from then all others. Lovejoy’s enrollment was more than Lassiter that finished in final 4 last year in 5A and Valdosta (Lovejoy 2155, Lassiter 2019, Valdosta 1887).

@sportsnut, I understand you are talking up your team as most of us in 6A up from 5A don’t have recent experience with you. I would be cautious about downplaying the Packers. They are a good team that can up and bite you! Now, I will agree they talk a BIG game and are somewhat proud but they have come a long way in the past 4 years and have reason to be proud. Don’t fall into the trap of believing they are all talk because as much as they talk, at least part of it is true.

who gives a crap about 7 on 7 championships and competition……..you can throw this higwash out the window afetr the season starts.,…….For example……my team..LOWNDES of course is not going to shine in a 7 on 7 against an elite passing team bc we are a “RUNNING” team…..your teams that are pass first are usually going to be better against teams who are not known for an elite air attack…….dont look to much into these 7 on 7″s…….this is about like winning the hot dog eating contest as far as i am concerned……..who give a hoot………
Lovejoy will beat colquitt………mark that down in your notebook wildhawg……
when prospt runs out of alabama graduated recruits then colquitt will still be good but not what they are with all these recruits
Lowndes 9th grade last year went undefeated……beating colquitt each time they played…….and they are now going to be 10th graders…….Lowndes 8th grade squad last year also went undefeated and beat colquitt both times……..When these 2 classes merge to make the varsity in a few years Lowndes will bring home another state title………best talent lowndes has had since the run we made in 04-09…….this year lowndes makes playoffs…….but i think its colquitts or camdens region to lose……Lowndes will be solid as it always is and may can pull it off but lowndes best years is still aother 2 years away in my opinon……..

@bksmith14 Hello and welcome to the conversation. You are right about the 7-on-7 games and no Lowndes won’t win most of those but when its time to play as a whole team you can bet Lowndes will be ready!! I can’t explain to sportsnut that i am concerned about my region games (Lowndes,Valdosta, and Camden) comand attention from anyone dont you agree. I mean if we loose all three of those games then we might not even make the playoffs but we can loose all of our non-region games and still make playoffs. So if we did loose to Lovejoy it really won’t effect our playoff chances either way. But giving Lovejoy the same respect i give Lowndes,Valdosta,Camden,Grayson and Brookwood is well stupid!! Lovejoy can beat the pack i mean anygiven friday anyone can loose so i never said Lovejoy couldn’t beat the pack but it is not a game that i am really concernded about until its time to play them. Now u did take some shots at us but its cool but i don’t understand what the 8th and 9th grade teams have to do with this so are u saying Lowndes won’t be better than last year because i don’t know what Lowndes has this year but i do know they will be competative. It does sound like you don’t have faith in this quad this year if you are hanging your hat on some 8th and 9th graders. You do have some upperclassmen on this team but from this conversation maybe they don’t meet your approval as a championship team. With the stuff that Lowndes has done over the last 10 years i would expect you to be more comfident about your team than me.

Nice to hear from you too, FridayNightLightsFan. Hope you have a good season. Time for the lesson to begin. WILDHAWG, from 2000 – 2010, neither did Colquit make it past the 2nd. round. In 05′, you made it to the second round. Not until 09′ did you make it past the 2nd. round. For those that do not know, Lovejoy sits in a strange spot geographically and is the largest school in the metro area that is closest to the South Georgia schools and this is why they are always changing classes.Lovejoy has not dominated anything. If Mundy’s Mill had not opened in 04′, then we could say maybe they were dominant, given that they were 45 – 13 from 2000 – 04′. I am so glad that you guy’s are not afraid, why should you be ? Hey Fred, I am only stating facts. Not meaning to downgrade or berate. This is great ! By the way Fred, all of Emory is in Atlanta, look it up. @ bksmith == I understand about the 8th and 9th graders and what they will bring to some teams. We have up-coming 10th graders who played last year and will be much better for their experience and this adds depth. Look at Grayson, they have no 9th or 10th graders as they choose to play only Jrs. and Srs. on varsity. Our JV went 7 – 0 this past year and this is good for the varsity. I want my team to win every game, so each team is a concern for me. I will be at the Dome on the 25th to see exactly who has what.

All you guys that know me on here….you guys know i dont “sugar coat” anything…….i call it like i see it whether its steps on your toes or not……so yall can give it back to me if you want to……bc if you can dish it out you got to be able to take it!!……
As for this year….Lowndes will have a talented backfield……..#21 Nicholas Burgman (sr) ….and # 2 Tiquan Lang (sr) are going to be 2 of our biggest playmakers……also # 4 Ahmad Brown (sophmore) will factor in at rb as well…….as he ran all over stephenson in the 4th qtr as a feshman………if you remember grayson fans he also had a costly fumble against you guys deep in our own territory that you guys converted into a td……..which really put the icing on the cake as far as you guys defeating us if you ask me…….it was a heck of a battle up until that mistake by the freshman……..
Lowndes secondary returns ALL EXCEPT Clemons……..so i think we will actually be better there bc of experience……
Our Oline is already much better than last year…Anchored by # seniors #61 Center ( 5″11 260) #76 Rt (6″4 310) And #74 Lt (6″1 260″)
We are going to have a Qb who can throw the ball if we have to this year…..he is not John elway but an upgarde from last year passing wise……..Our Qb last year had the heart of a lion but the size of mouse…….
Lowndes Has a lot of speed…….and we have a stud at Lb……guy looks like he has been chizzled out of stone…..#17 tre jackson…….Looks like Arnold Schwarznager with shirt off……he is only a junior
My Biggest concern is our D line……..We only return the noseguard…..we are smaller on the dline but we are a lot quicker……..Time will tell………
I feel lowndes will be just as good i not better than last years team…….but we have colquiitt …valdosta and camden…..I doubt anyone runs the region undefeated this year……
Colquitt returns the most on both sides of the ball (yall did lose two bama recruits who were huge factors in yalls success last year) woodyard and washington rb and lb/rb
Brice Ramsey for camden is a stud…kid is going to GA ……at the qb position………and jj green is a lightning bolt………
Lowndes will not be an easy out and the top 4 seeds out of this region will be a team nobody wants to have to play come playoff time……..bc they will be battle tested to say the least……..
tifton and coffee will be no pushovers either……
I say Colquitt….Camden…..Either Lowndes or Valdosts for 3rd in region …and whoever doesnt get 3rd will get 4th……..but who knows……..
lowndes went 6-4 in 2006 and then won the title in 2007 when i didnt even think we would

@sportnut – it is Dowman Drive, not Dorman. That mailing address has an Atlanta post office zip but I can assure you that the Atlanta city limits are at least 2 miles away. Similar to the Decatur address going all the way to south DeKalb and Lithonia. A map will work wonders for you. Sometimes what you read on the internet may not be authoritative so be prepared to take it with a grain of salt. In this case, 32+ years of looking at it everyday trumps a post office listing.

Emory Football is still undefeated and Emory is still in DeKalb not Atlanta. ” By the way Fred, all of Emory is in Atlanta, look it up.” In any case, it is probably immaterial as I don’t really expect Druid Hills to become a sudden contender this year or any in the foreseeable future! I would say they are the poster child for all that is wrong with DeKalb sports! No practice facilities to speak of, their home field is a shared stadium several miles away, etc. Great school but not a football power house for sure. In fact, when you look at it, it is a miracle that DeKalb schools are competitive at all! The old days of athletic glory for DeKalb seem to be destined to not be repeated.

@ Fred == You never know. I went to their spring game and coaching seems to be more of a problem than a small talent pool. I know a couple of the kids and their parents and they are optimistic about the future. They had a group on the 8th grade team that only lost one game and the coach wants to start them this year on varsity. If this group stays together and healthy, they could beat a few teams this year. They have Morrow, who has won only about 6 games in the last 5 years. Rockdale County and Alcovy could be wins. They open with Clarkston, who is in the region with Tucker,SWD, MLK and Stephenson but are playing a non-region schedule. Another possible win. It may sound far fetched but, with this region, someone has to make the playoff’s. Lovejoy

But i do understand their that their is a light at the end of the tunnel for u all this year. you all should make the playoffs for the first time considering u are in one of the weakest regions in 6A.Take away Colquit and East Coweta and you have a cupcake schedule so that is a real strong possibility u all could make the playoffs at the highest class since 2004. And about our schedule well every year we play about at least 7 or more playoff teams before the playoffs even begin. We don’t do cupcakes that much cause it doen’t help us out at region or playoff time.

tift county will be a better football team than last year but i dont see them competing with camden . lowndes. vhs. or colquitt this year……..but that does not mean they wont be competitive………give the new coach they have a few years………..yall do have a very talented qb though………but he didnt do jack squat against lowndes last year when lowndes shut tift out 21-0 in tifton

@ WILDHAWG2012 == I am glad you find it hard not to talk football. Never really liked that uniform. I like the Corolina Blue much better. This is what it is supposed to be. Football fans with high school ties and pride, exchanging good nature ribbing and pulling for some of the best high school football in the nation. We have never been to Colquit but are looking foward to our visit. All my comments are fact based and I support this team completely. I have only missed 5 games in the 12 years that I have lived in Lovejoy. If you want the truth about the Tucker game, they beat us. Although we lost, this was a great moment for us. It was never considered that in the first half, Tucker had 199 yards of offense while scoring 15 pts. Tucker was averaging 43 ppg in the playoff’s. They ended the game with a total of 271 yards which means they only gained 72 in the second half. If you look at Lovejoy closely, you will find a good team that plays better in the second half. I am not quite sure what you mean that we should make the playoff’s for the first time. In what context are you speaking ? We do have a soft schedule but that is not of our doing. Think what it would be if the coach did not take those four teams to add to the schedule. Alpharetta, East Coweta and Colquit more than likely will be our toughest test but you never know. These teams may not be cupcakes but they are not world beaters either. I see you played Tift, Coffee, Westlake(we had them with cam), TCC, WR, Jenkins, Mill Creek Randolph – Clay, Thomasville, Lee County, stop, thats enough. Every team plays it’s share of lesser gifted teams and that is just part of the game. We have done Lowdnes before and we are 1 – 2 against them, all playoff games. We lost to them in 99′ and 01′, both in the 2nd. round. We beat them in 02′ in the first round. We played Coffee once and won in 03 in the 1st. round.

@sportsnut you are write this is what its all about. We are just getting ready for the season man. I get you support your team. I don’t see anything wrong with that because i am a packerbacker at heart. If i say something about your team u are write to get defensive because i would but the bottom line is we want both our teams to have a great year but we as fans do understand that it is a long season and some upsets will happen at some point during the year. We both just hope its not us that’s being upset on any given friday. It will be a long season and at some point during the year we both will be challenged maybe by each other huh. good luck to you guys now i must shift my attention to the Ga Dome and North Gwinnett
