Cambridge football job open again as Buford assistant steps aside

Christian Hunnicutt, the Buford football assistant who was selected in January to start the new program at Cambridge High in north Fulton County, has stepped down, Cambridge athletics director Matt Lawless confirmed Friday.

“Unfortunately these last few weeks have been very trying on his family and he worked hard to get the program up and running, but he decided it was best for him to explore other opportunities,’’ Lawless said. “It was a decision he made in the best interest of his family and ours as well, and we support him in that.’’

Hunnicutt had taken Cambridge through spring practice, when ended two weeks ago. Lawless said he expected a new head coach to be named quickly but did not set a timetable. He said most of the staff that Hunnicutt had assembled would remain.

Cambridge, which will draw from Milton, Alpharetta and Roswell high schools, will play a full Region 7-AAAAA schedule in 2012 and opens Aug. 31 at home against Riverwood.

Hunnicutt had coached at Buford for 13 seasons and was the school’s offensive coordinator. He was on staff through seven Buford state titles in football.

I hear he had stillnot gotten a contract from Fulton Co and decided to give it up…Who wants to work in Fulton Co?

Has nothing to do with contract.

Everything to do with investigation into recruiting & realizing he wasn’t in Buford anymore….

Cambridge is a beautiful new school… Unbelievable athletic facilities with a gorgeous new stadium. It sits in a football centric community that has a passion for the game. The Administration has proven they can go find great coaches. The athletic staff at Cambridge is as impressive as any coaching staff in the area. They will hire another great football coach.

Reality is after spring practice, it will take a long time to be competitive. Reality is schools do not give time to build anymore. Way too much parent influence especially when losses start rolling in. Smart move to wait for the righ opporutnity. If a new head coach starts out with poor records, nobody understands the situations, espeically in new schools when kids have choice to go or not, and the coach will be judged off records. Say what you want, but the masses look at it from the surface, not from down under.

Forced to resign for illegal recruiting. It is true he didn’t have much to work with but when you are turned in to the GHSA by rival schools and there is proof of the accusations you have to save face and resign. Not a good start for a new school. Gonna be a long year.

When you aren’t offered a contract WHY would you stay? But you got 4 months for free, what the heck. What a joke, Cambridge is missing out on a great coach.

Read this carefully … what is NOT said? Clearly, this had NOTHING to do with a contract. If so, then the other coaches at Cambridge would have the same problem.

Maybe the contract had a clause that per GHSA – no recruiting allowed – we will never know.

I commend Cambridge on taking the HIGH ROAD and not throwing him under the bus!

Cambridge is NOT Milton

I don’t know any of the facts of what led to this, but I definitely like the way Cambridge has handled the sports program so far. Roswell always played it straight with athletics and the fact that the principal and AD came from there bodes well for Cambridge. Nobody wants this school to be anything like the Milton teams like boys basketball, competing with recruited players and flaunting it! Winning a faux championship with mostly players who don’t live anywhere near doesn’t accomplish anything except eliminate the ability for kids who actually live in the area to play high school sports. Win with your own kids and lose with your own kids… its their once-in-a-lifetime chance to be a part of a high school team and that should not be destroyed by mercenary coaches who care only about their own careers, not the kids.

At least the Cambridge principal and AD have made it clear that they won’t be putting their heads in the sand, pretending not to notice their coaches cheating. It is a promising start for the new school and I wish them well.

I am not saying that Hunnicutt was a cheater because I have no idea what happened. He seems like a good man and is definitely a good coach. I just like the fact that the administration has clearly taken a principled position with the highest-profile sport there is: football. That sends a very powerful message to all of North Fulton before the doors to the school are even open.

Yes, Cambridge is not Milton. Milton has been accused of things, but never punished. Cambridge has been accused, caught, and punished. The Principal had nothing to do with the resignation. He, like Hunnicutt, got reprimanded by GHSA & Fulton County. Hunnicutt just took the brunt of it because he was the one that got caught.

I hate it for those kids that the arrogance of few will effect so many.

Oh really now,

You seem to know a lot about this. Can you tell us all, since many parents are watching this blog, as to the exact proof you have that Cambridge has been caught and punished? Do you know of a report or file? Can you tell us a case number for the GHSA or who has looked into the issue for Cambridge or the GHSA? And if you know about this type of issue at Milton, why not report it? If you hate it, report it for all schools, because you seem to be biased if you only know about things for one school.

Oh Really Now, seems you know more than all of us. And that does not smell right, if you can tell all the parents, do it. Was this really looked into, who looked into the matter, why do you claim to know why Coach Hunnicut was not hired?

(BTW, I hear from the community he was never offered a contract, seems funny that you say the Principal had nothing to do with the resignation. But you know that Dr. Spurka was reprimanded.)

Either show us the proof, or stop spreading lies. We have a community to build for our kids.

this is bs

May 28th, 2012

This is all spin. you can’t believe any of this.

Yes – Alpharetta High complained to GHSA and Fulton county they were losing players. This was cleared up. AHS is a rotton program from the head down, and they will be found out over the next couple of months – GHSA is there now investigating since all the people they interviewed about hunnicutt told them volumes about illegal recruiting BY AHS!

The fact is that if the charges of Recruiting were found true, then players would be ruled ineligible. No players have been found ineligible. The charges were found to be false, and Spurka never gave him a contract. This is all Spurka – he lied to coach, and now he’s lying to us.

The part about the assistants is a lie as well. Spurka doesn’t like Carmichael – the OC from Chat, so he “dismissed him” last week. None of other coaches have contracts either, and most will leave, because they know Hunnicutt was pushed under the bus.

AHS Raised the charges because players left in frustration. Funny most of AHS’s starters live by the airport and some will be returning to schools there this fall. Naim Mustaffa lives in college park, just has a bogus address in alpharetta.

no way

Learn who gives contracts

May 28th, 2012
1:14 pm

The Board of Education, aka the central administration center, offers contracts. Not Principals or schools. The Principal recommends a person, then a zone director makes the final decision.

A lot of parents on here just spouting the BS they hear in the Booster Clubs. But we all know the point of going to high school is sports, not an education. Isn’t that right parents?

If Ralph Swearigin finally does his job at the GHSA – that will be a first! Also Fulton County’s own Leonard Box who is in charge of athletics will pick his schools to cover up recruiting. He protects his favorites – especially if it means a fulton school could win a championship. Guess Cambridge is not on the good ole boy list yet – he is probably working too hard stacking his other schools for a victory.

On a side note Cambridge also made the worst/most unqualified basketball hire in the state of Georgia this past offseason. Not a promising start for this athletic program. Also if you just had to part ways with a coach accused of illegal recruiting why would you fill that vacancy with a guy who directed the most well known athletic program that is accused of the same thing?

I guess Milton also recruited the boys and girls golf teams, the boys and girls lacrosse teams, and the girls soccer team huh? Of course, you probably think all winning programs recruit? We live in an age where parents want the best opportunities for their children, can you blame them? I know, you will come back with Boyd this and Boyd that. The man has played for 11 state championships, won 6 of them. People want to come play for him, gets his kids in great schools, makes them do their school work, holds them accountable, works hard. Maybe you wanted the bball job at Milton and Cambridge? Maybe some hard feelings?

Actually reality I’m a big Boyd fan & have significant ties to the Buford athletic program-go wolves-I just think that if you’re gonna run hunnicut off (which was a great hire IMO) for recruiting kids hiring Boyd’s boss looks strange to outsiders & will open you up to significant statewide criticism & scrutiny. On the basketball side of things Cambridge hired a guy whose experience consisted of coaching ms basketball & his lone varsity interim season produced 1 win & his lone jv season was winless. This school could have gotten whoever they wanted(as evidenced by them luring away the top football assistant In the state) yet they hire that dude??? Just 1 big head scratcher.

I got you. Truth of the matter is from the articles, the AD at Milton was only in his first year in that role. I don’t personally know either him or Hunnicut(which from the outside in, did look like a good hire). I also don’t know the basketball hire, so I can’t really comment on that one either. Sometimes people just bash some schools, typically the ones that win, for recruiting.

Its interesting to me that we just throw our hands up to basketball men and womens programs who recruit players and make such a big issue when football does it. Jonesboro’s girls basketball team was recruited and their Head Coach was hired at Alpharetta even though he was reprimanded. Tell me why he would leave a loaded Jonesboro team that got to the final four to go to a pretty good Alpharetta team. The heat was on him. Other girls high school basketball recruiting teams are; Westlake, Forest Park, Langston Hughes, St Pius, and the list goes on and on. A good point was made, what happens to those kids who live in distrcts but cant touch the field or court because of all these recruits that come in. It’s rediculis!

Accusing Hunnicutt of illegal recruiting with out knowing facts is wrong. The other story with real legs,
appears to be the County hadn’t given him a contract to sign , he gave them a date deadline to do so and walked when they didn’t deliver. He’ll have more offers than he’ll know what to do with.

The issue with the programs around this area are the same issue that happen in the classroom and in virtually every other area of these young men and womens lives. The parents (living there own lives through their kids) make every excuse, tell any lie and throw anyone under the bus to promote there kid. My guess is that alot of the cambrige parents talking about these other programs found “issues” because there kids did not play at Milton, Alpharetta, Roswell…The funny think is this constant lowering of the bar so that my kid is sucessful only ends up hurting them. At the end of the day there are many other activities that would provide some of these folks great outlets and experiences. However, that may cause some short term pain for the child….cannot have that! In any evert, Cambridge has been recuiting kids from the Feeder programs and trashing the other programs around town for month. This North Fulton program will be like the rest in a couple of years. A bunch of over needy parent and middle of the road teams.

We all know that people get hit in the head when pyliang football. The only thing new that may come out is the extent that the NFL knew serious and long term neurological injuries were occurring. However just because they knew doesn’t mean that they are liable for all the damages that occurred. Was there any realistic preventive measure that they could have taken? I suppose they will say the NFL should have enacted the current rules on helmet to helmet hits sooner. However I don’t think that was realistic. Seriously, even with the new rules, we know people are going to have brain injuries. If every league is now liable, that means that every Pop Warner League and High School can now get sued by any former player who has an neurological damage. At that point, we should just outlaw contact sports.

Cambridge has been given a highly regarded principal with a 10 year proven track record at RHS not only for athletics but more importantly, academics. Fulton County asked him to take this position and Roswell hated to lose him. We need to focus on supporting our teachers and administration to make this school the best it can be for our kids, teachers and coaches. Roswell was a designated school for south county students to voluntarily attend, nothing to do with football recruits. Reprimanded, recruiting? We should not post what we do not know about people.

This highly regarded principal wanted out of Roswell badly. Roswell was getting to be a scary place to walk the hallways. Have you been there. As for the “designated school” issue you need to check the roster of players over the years and see where several of the difference makers came from. And I am sorry but they were recuited as far back as the Roswell feeder football programs….U are joking, right.

Cambridge recently fired its Offensive Coordinator and Community coach and another decided to leave. Cambridge defense is a joke, the Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator has yet to change a thing after the first 3 weeks. The line coach leaves aLOT to be desired. Saw the 1st 3 games and the O-Line and D-Line is bad. The 3 Coaches that left all have State Championships under their belt but weren’t deemed worthy.
