Girls soccer blog: No. 1 Whitewater beats No. 2 McIntosh for 3-AAAA title

Top-ranked Whitewater captured the region title and No. 1 seed for the state playoffs with a 2-0 victory over No. 2 McIntosh on Tuesday in the Region 3-AAAA championship game. Teegan Van Gunst and Brook Colangelo scored second-half goals for the Wildcats, according to the Fayette Citizen. It was the second victory of the year for Whitewater against its Fayette County rival. Whitewater, 13-0-1 going into Wednesday night’s game against Class AAAAA No. 2 Walton, lost to McIntosh in the Class AAAA championship game last season. Starr’s Mill will be the No. 3 seed from the region after a 1-0 upset of sixth-ranked Union Grove in the third-place game. …

The other Class AAAA team with no losses is sixth-ranked Greenbrier (17-0-1), which won the 2-AAAA title with a 4-2 victory over Richmond Hill on Tuesday. Westminster’s 2-0 victory over Buford on Tuesday prevented the third-ranked Wolves from earning a share of first place in Region 6-AA and allowed top-ranked Blessed Trinity to emerge with the No. 1 seed for the state playoffs. Blessed Trinity and No. 2 Greater Atlanta Christian finished in a tie for first place, with the Titans winning the regular-season matchup 3-2 (3-2 in penalty kicks) on March 23. Blessed Trinity is the defending state champion. GAC’s Rachel Garcia had four goals and an assist in a 7-0 victory over Lovett on Tuesday, according to the Gwinnett Daily Post. …

Lassiter will be the No. 1 seed from Region 5-AAAAA, coming out on top in the tiebreaker after finishing tied with Woodstock and second-ranked Walton for the regular-season title. All three schools went 5-1 in the region and 1-1 against each other, but Lassiter had the advantage in goals allowed. Walton will be the No. 2 seed, and Woodstock will go on the road in the first round as a No. 3 seed. “I wanted that home playoff game so bad for my girls, but it’s not the end of the day,” Woodstock coach Cory Nix said. “I guess we should have beaten Walton at their place when we were up 1-0 with eight minutes to go but didn’t know how to hold them off for one goal because we hadn’t been in that situation before. Everything happens for a reason.” The other No. 1 seeds in Class AAAAA are Lowndes (Region 1), East Coweta (Region 2), Savannah Arts Academy (Region 3), Harrison (Region 4), Milton (Region 6), Peachtree Ridge (Region 7) and Parkview (Region 8). Defending state champion Harrison will have home-field advantage throughout the state playoffs. …
