The 2012 football schedule was released Tuesday by the Georgia High School Association. Go here to check it out.
Here are 10 things worth noting –
- Camden County, a strong contender in Class AAAAAA with Georgia-committed seniors J.J. Green and Brice Ramsey, got the road schedule of death in newly configured Region 1. The Wildcats must travel to Valdosta (Sept. 28), Lowndes (Nov. 2) and Colquitt County (Nov. 9). Camden are 92-0 in games that counted in the region standings under Jeff Herron, who arrived in 2000.
- Grayson will open defense of its state title at the five-game Corky Kell Classic on Aug. 25 at the Georgia Dome. The Corky Kell schedule was released months ago, but it’s worth repeating.
9 a.m. – Chattahoochee vs. Kell
11:45 a.m. – Grayson vs. McEachern
2:45 p.m. – Colquitt County vs. North Gwinnett
5:30 p.m. – Peachtree Ridge vs. Camden County
8:30 p.m. – Walton vs. Brookwood
- Don’t be surprised if Grayson is ranked No. 1 in some preseason national polls. Aside from winning Class AAAAAA, Grayson must get by Miami Central on Aug. 31 to win a national championship. Central was Florida’s Class 6A runner-up last season and returns Joseph Yearby, who rushed for 2,260 yards last season. Grayson returns 10 starters on defense led by defensive end Robert Nkemdiche, perhaps the nation’s No. 1 prospect.
- East Cobb and West Cobb are developing a rivalry that will play out at McEachern’s Cantrell Stadium on Aug. 31. Lassiter (10-4 in 2011) will play Hillgrove (11-1), and Walton (14-1) will play McEachern (10-2).
- Hallford Stadium in DeKalb County should raise prices and take advantage of all the blockbusters slated for Region 6-AAAAA, which features M.L. King and Stephenson moving from the highest classification to play with reigning AAAA champion Tucker and Southwest DeKalb.
Here are six games worth seeing there:
Sept. 8 – MLK vs. SWD
Sept. 28 – SWD vs. Stephenson
Oct. 12 – Tucker vs. Stephenson
Oct. 19 – SWD vs. Tucker
Oct. 26 – MLK vs. Stephenson
Nov. 2 – MLK vs. Tucker
- Reigning Class AA champion Calhoun has won 37 straight regular-season games. That streak will be in jeopardy on Sept. 14, if not before, when the Yellow Jackets play Carrollton (11-2 in AAA last season) for the first time since 1985. That was when Charlie Grisham (five state titles) was Carrollton’s coach. Calhoun also will be at risk early against Ridgeland (Aug. 31) and Dalton (Sept. 7).
- Buford, which moves up to AAA after winning four of the past five titles in AA, has only nine games. Buford coach Jess Simpson said Tuesday he thinks he has a 10th opponent lined up but didn’t want to reveal for fear it would fall through. Buford is not an attractive opponent because of the school’s success, but Simpson said that wasn’t a big reason for the scheduling issues this season. “We’re going to be so young and inexperienced, this is probably the year people want to play Buford,’’ he said. Simpson believes state-playoff tiebreakers that reward teams for winning against same-class opponents are the biggest obstacle to getting willing opponents. As it stands, Buford has a pretty easy slate in new 7-AAA, although a non-region tilt with Gainesville and all-state quarterback Deshaun Watson should be good. After losing 49-0 last season, Gainesville could be favored this time.
- Lovett is playing Marist in football for the first time ever. That’s pretty remarkable for two metro Atlanta private schools that go back more than 50 years. The schools are not that different in size, but Marist typically plays in a higher classification. And they’re on different sides of downtown Atlanta. Lovett also will be playing another Catholic school from DeKalb, St. Pius, for the first time since 1983. Lovett’s new schedule is partly the work of new Region 6-AA, which has only five teams, making it the smallest region in the state. That means that Lovett, GAC, Westminster, Wesleyan and Hapeville Charter must find six non-region games. GAC and Wesleyan are playing teams from Tennessee. GAC is playing Savannah. Westminster is playing Laney of Augusta and Thomasville.
- With all the talk of every region (except 6-AA) being subdivided by the GHSA, that idea designed to save travel time didn’t make its way into football. Only eight out of 48 regions chose the option of subdividing, which is actually down a bit from the 12 out of 40 from the past two years. That’s 16 fewer playoff berths that will be decided by those “region play-in” things. Of course, those are offset by the 24 Class A playoff berths (not counting the region champions) that will be determined by the dreaded power rankings. The GHSA split 47 of 48 regions in half for 2012-13 to allow regions to play as half-regions if they thought it would help with travel. Apparentlly it’s not an issue in this sport.
- There are several intriguing notes and nuggets that might not merit a whole paragraph, but are worth mentioning. For example, Thomas County Central and Marist renew their rivalry on Sept. 7 at Marist. For those who remember their epic games in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s, that game should be fun. Northside-Warner Robins plays at Flowery Branch on Oct. 31. Flowery Branch also plays Gainesville in a Nov. 9 game. Good to see those in the same region (8-AAAAA) again. Just because public schools don’t want to compete against private schools in the playoffs doesn’t mean they don’t want to play each other, period. On Sept. 9, Class A state power Clinch County of south Georgia will visit Eagle’s Landing Christian. That’s probably the season’s best public-private game in A. And finally, there are seven schools playing their first varsity games in 2012 – Cambridge, B.E.S.T. Academy, Coahulla Creek, Christian Heritage, Mount Vernon Presbyterian, Providence Christian and Rabun Gap.

Camden lost 36 seniors. Most of their defensive starters! I believe they will be very good on offense, but unpredictable on defense. And as we all know, to win a state title in Ga., your defense has to be stout!

@ Coach B were at the Mays v/s Pope game or you going by score. Mays wasn’t hammered in that game. Mays defense let the Pope qb out grasped on 7 plays that lead to TD…. 7 sack where the defense let guy shake’em off. Some bad caalll….. but the 7 missed sack cost Mays the game.

A word of wisdom to Grayson when you play Miami Central at home. When you beat Miami Central on Aug. 31, watch out for 2 things! They have some of the most foul mouths you have ever seen when they are losing and make sure you keep an official by their locker room. They plugged our drains and turned the water on and left it on!

Region 6AAAAA…best region in the State now!!! but it might not be as good as it looks on paper. Tucker is defending champs and are the clear best team over thepast 5seasons with two championships and 2 final four losses. Thats great! but they loss there Head coach and there leaders on defense in Josh Dawson and Jacob Sealand. But they have ALOT of talent coming back in there QB/S Juwann Williams..Dallas Rivers at RB. There offense will score but there defense might need some time but it should be top 10 like always. Stephenson and Southwest always have all the talent in the WORLD but somehow under achieves. This Stephenson team is not as talented as they normally are and SWD will be tough..but somehow both of them will choke. MLK will be good this year. But they are losing Blake Tibbs to UGA and there QB..Dawson who was a great high school QB. MLK offense will still score points and there defense will be good but not great. MY prediction Tucker will win the region and contend for a state title again. MLK will come in second and also be a title contender but not as high as Tucker. Stephenson will come in third but lose in the 1st round like always. And SWD will be the 4th seed but be a tough playoff matchup!.

Grayson and Colquitt were the best two teams last year. NG had the best team defense and holy cow could Colquitt put up some points fast. I picked Grayson last year and I’m doin it again. NG will be down so who knows how they will do. Good luck region 1, gonna need it.

1. Tucker
2. MLK
3. Stephenson
4. SWD
5. Mays

I wouldn’t say it if it didn’t mean it. Northside Eagles will be the team to beat in 5A. Hadn’t had this much talent returning since the 06 and 07 seasons……..I don’t think Grayson will have any trouble at all with Miami Central , just another over hyped , non defensive playing squad out of Florida. ……..After all these years the GHSA finally gets my seal of approval .Great job with the realignments .A great football season 2012 will be.

@ Lovejoy Dad == No need to worry, we have been there before and more than held our own. We have a great group of kid’s returning, as I am sure you know, and they will be ready to put it all on the line. Been doing a little re-con and and I have determined that 6-AAAAAA will be wide open. When the pre-season poll’s are released, you will find some school’s that will not be there for long. Because of the change in classes, there are going to be some surprises. I hope we are not on the bad end of any. All in all, I’m ready for some football and have already made plans for the road trip to Colquit in week 2.

Northside-Warner Robins lost one game in three seasons against this overhyped Region 1. Camden County will have no problems blazing a trail through Region 1 football. You heard it from me. Their fanbases do not travel. Camden County, like Northside-Warner Robins, will often have as many or more fans on the road.
With the exception of one hiccup (a loss at Lowndes) from our Eagles over many years, Region 1 serves as glorified “cakewalk” for any “REAL PROGRAM.” If your best teams lose to AA programs and can not handle McEachern, what do you believe Camden is going to do? Camden County will wreck shop and Region 1 will present a myriad of excuses as to why and how the Blue from Kingsland has an “unfair” advantage OR the classic Region 1 line, “the refs were cheating on us.” LOL!

Mays made changes in the staff. The QB is top shelf. The kid can chunk it. After the annual beat down named Carver we will see MG, MLK and SWD in September. MLK will be a challenge for sure. MG and SWD dont want to meet Mays at Lakewood in September, speed kills. It is too early to see who actally enrolls up on the hill. Cities vs Washington and it will be held on a saturday, Coach Miller which is the head coach @ T.Cities was a position coach at MLK a few years ago so he still has strong ties with MLK and to start off the classic @ T.Cities this MLK was the perfect school to represent it and also they will still take home half of the proceeds so it is a win win situation for them.

@Swatguy – Is the special kid you mention a RB? If so, that should help Mays become more dimensional on offense, from last season. No doubt about the QB, the kid has mad skills…one of the best in the region. Just something to think about, the kid you mention being a freshman, it’s difficult for a 14 year old, right out of middle school, to come into this region and have immediate success…a lot of upper class talent he will be facing weekly, who are 3 – 4 years his senior. But yeah, he could be a freak of nature(that’s a complement expression)…occasionally these athletes come thru.

@ 5AReg6Fan == Thanks for the well wishes. I hope your new coach has what the previous one did in attempting to win it all. He had a mind set that was a total fit for Tucker and it’s never ending supply of talent. Since I am from Dekalb and still have the majority of my friends and family there, I will be pulling for your Region to bring it all home again. Reg. 6 will no doubt be the class of 5-AAAAA and could produce the next Champion. We are going to take it all in stride and play for the Crown ourselves. We are not new to playing the schools fron South Georgia and look foward to it. Much talk is already going on about Grayson, Colquit and Camden. We will sit back and let them talk. We will wait and see what happens. With Colquit, Alpharetta and East Coweta in wks. 2-4, this will be a proving time to see if we are indeed ready to challenge for the top prize in the top class. Good luck to all in the up-coming year and welcome back to all you good natured, fun loving Football Fans.

My son was on the team under Reid from years past and what I am hearing from the team this year is nothing but positive things. This a team that close. This group has something to prove…Reid wasn’t the reason they won…The players are the reason they won. We are expecting another great season..

Re: What are they afraid of . . .
So Marist is chiken$#!& for not playing a 2A “powerhouse” Westminster team that had 5 losses last year. Ok right. Marist is the only team in the state with the ‘nads to play up 2 classifications. If all the private schools (and the essentially private city schools like Buford and Carrolton) did this, we wouldn’t have the private-public debate.
And if that isn’t enough, Marist is starting out the 2012 season playing up 3 classifications playing two different AAAAA powerhouses Clarke County Central and Thomas County Central. So you must be a comedian to say Marist is shying away from competition.
Accoring to the GHSA, Westminster is a larger school than Marist. If Westminster wants to play Marist, the Wildkittens should step on up to the big leagues at AAAA instead of AA (where those 5 losses last year are bound to increase significantly).
Same with St. Pius hanging out at AAA instead of playing up. Marist had no opportunity to play Pius the past 2 years because of mandatory region games left zero openings. This was not Marist’s choice. This year, when everyone expected the Marist-Pius rivalry to be back on, when Marist called over to schedule it, Pius declined. Pius filled up its dance card with others and wants to tout its “rebuilding” program. Pius’ coaches have been quoted as saying that the Golden Lions playing Marist this year would do nothing for it. Who is chicken?
BTW, Marist’s entire backfield is back, and most of their defense so I wouldn’t expect a down year. I do feel sorry for Therrell (a recurring Westminster opponent in prior years) playing Marist this year, but that was a mandatory region game that Marist had no control over scheduling.
__________________________________
“Marist is chicken$#!& for playing Lovett and not Westminster! Coach Chadwick does not want to play them for some odd reason and Marist and St.Pius…not playing is a joke. Who does not want to play whom? My bet is on Marist as they are down (again) and don’t want to play the mighty Golden Lions!!”

This certain freshman is not only going to have an immediate impact, he is bigger and stronger than most players 3 or 4 years his senior. The kids is a beast. That’s why I love the fact that all of the bloggers has us to finish last among all of the playoff teams from last year, including you! I welcome your prediction, it just gives me more to type on this blog when we are 1st or 2nd seed this year. Good luck to Tucker.
Last but not least, I have to agree with both of you on one comment. Mays QB is not just the best in the region, i would say one of the best in the state. He is a surgeon on the field, even in games when other teams drop 8. As I recall, he had over 250 yards passing on Tucker last year, even though we lost the game. With an improved defense ( by the way, the youngster position may not even be on offensive; that’s a bonus I’ll throw in for yall) we are coming for everyone in region 6 and AAAAA.

@Mays fan – Well it sounds like the Raiders have a SUPER 11 coming soon. I’ll have to instruct Tucker’s freshmen to study him from the sideline, because in time they will need to deal with him, since they will not be contributing in the game, unless it’s mop up time. It’s a rarity for a freshman to impact Tucker’s varsity squad…a lot of older and experience athletes to beat out for playing time. Yep, my early…early…early prediction has Mays finishing #5, but I have an open mind, since we have first hand experiences with Mays. This region, as I have mention in previous post, contains exceptional athletes on ALL teams, but it takes more than good horses to cross the finish line, there must be a great jockey (Coaching) to lead his horses. Even though Tucker has a new coach, there is a WINNING system in place and all he has to do is tap into it…heck of a spot to be in for a first year Head Coach.
Lastly, keep the positive comments coming about your Raiders; let the new region bloggers know Mays Raiders will be in the game…Good luck to Mays.

@Swatguy & Mays fan – If Mays is undefeated after 9/21, or have one lost before the 11/03 game with Stephenson, they might be in the driver seat of the region, while the other 4 beat up on each other in the month of Oct…just food for thought. Also, Mays has a very favorable home schedule this year (Miller Grove, SWD, Dunwoody, and Stephenson). I added MG & Dunwoody; because these two teams are waiting in the wings to bounce the TOP 5…a lost to either one could cause trouble for a team’s playoff dreams. MG has a real nice young coach, who cut his teeth last year, if he can get the entire program to buy into his style, the Wolverines could be a hand full…last year’s game was a very close win for Mays. This just might be the year for the Raiders to make a stand, because in 2013 the schedule reverses itself. I might have to rethink my 2012 prediction order. (LOL)

I believe that GHSA has reset the order of things down here south of I-285… they place Newnan and East Coweta in this new Region 3-AAAAAA and based the production of the other teams, what Newnan and EC return, Newnan will go back to being dominate as in the days of the Ogletrees and EC will win their games and then Newnan vs. EC, one of the biggest rivalries in the state, will settle the Region Championship as it did for 11 years before they were placed in Region 2. IMO, Newnan is very strong with the return of Tray Matthews and their strong defense, and from what i hear they have an impressive stable of backs coming in to help the new young QB, i think Newnan will win Region 3-AAAAAA
