Girls soccer blog: Red-hot Whitewater moving up in rankings

Whitewater has been the biggest mover in the rankings in the past week, climbing to No. 24 nationally in the ESPN rating of spring teams and No. 1 in Class AAAA in Eurosport’s state rankings. Whitewater (6-0) avenged a loss in last year’s state championship game with a 3-1 victory on March 9 against McIntosh, the previous No. 1 team. Teegan VanGunst had two goals and Abbey Reddig had one in the victory. The Wildcats followed that up with a 3-0 victory against Starr’s Mill, and on Tuesday they knocked off Class AAA No. 2 Woodward Academy 2-1. Whitewater has outscored its opponents 23-2 this season. … Whitewater is one of four Georgia teams in this week’s ESPN rankings. Milton is No. 16, Union Grove is No. 30 and St. Pius is No. 36. Union Grove, making its first appearance in the national rankings in school history, is 8-0-1 after a 3-0 victory over Heritage-Conyers on Tuesday. The Wolverines lost in the state quarterfinals last season. … Class AAAAA No. 1 Milton suffered its first defeat of the season on Tuesday when it lost on penalty kicks to St. Pius, the top-ranked team in Class AAA. The game was tied 2-2 before St. Pius won 5-3 on the PKs. Milton was coming off one of its biggest victories of the season, a 4-3 win over Roswell last week. The Eagles play fifth-ranked Centennial on Friday. … St. Pius, 10-0-1 going into Wednesday’s game against Starr’s Mill, had a victory and a tie at the Tournament of Champions in Jekyll Island last weekend. Amanda Vocelka had another big week for the Golden Lions, scoring with less than five minutes to play in a 2-2 tie against Auburn (Ala.) and getting the game-winner with less than three minutes remaining to beat Spain Park (Ala.) 1-0. … Class AA No. 1 Greater Atlanta Christian improved to 10-0 with a 4-0 victory over Decatur on Tuesday. Rachel Garcia had two goals, and Danielle Marcano and Kayla Puzas scored once each for the Spartans, who play an important region game against third-ranked Blessed Trinity on Friday.
