Girls soccer blog: Defending champions off to strong starts

Defending girls soccer state champions St. Pius and First Presbyterian have picked up where they left off last season, as both teams are undefeated and No. 1 in the most recent Eurosport rankings. Class AAA St. Pius was 7-0 going into Wednesday night’s game at McEachern, outscoring opponents 41-0 through the first month of the season. Last week, Caroline Wootten scored three goals in a 6-0 victory against Grady, and Amanda Vocelka scored five times as the Golden Lions beat North Springs 10-0. This weekend, St. Pius will be among 20 girls teams competing in the Tournament of Champions at Jekyll Island. … First Presbyterian is 8-0 and No. 1 in Class A after winning the Mary Persons Bulldog Cup Tournament last weekend. The Vikings had outscored opponents 61-1 going into Wednesday’s game at Pacelli. First Presbyterian will travel to Rock Hill, S.C., this weekend to meet Charlotte Catholic (N.C.) and Lexington (S.C.) in the Fort Mill Invitational Tournament. “We have added a lot of youth to a veteran team, and the chemistry they have developed so quickly is amazing,” Vikings coach Joshua Trieste said. … Defending AAAAA champion Harrison is 5-2-1 and ranked No. 9. The Hoyas got two goals each from Hannah Deltac, Anna Sims and Savannah Vanderbeck in an 8-0 victory over Campbell on Tuesday. It was the third consecutive victory for the Hoyas after a three-game stretch that included 1-0 losses to Centennial and Lassiter and a 0-0 tie against Starr’s Mill. … McIntosh, the defending AAAA champion and third-ranked team this week, rebounded from a 3-1 loss to Whitewater with a 2-1 victory against Collins Hill on Tuesday. The Chiefs opened the season with five consecutive victories in which they outscored their opponents 25-3. McIntosh plays at Harrison on Friday. … Defending AA champion Blessed Trinity takes a 3-2-1 record and No. 3 ranking into Thursday’s game against fourth-ranked Lovett. The Titans suffered back-to-back shutout losses to Whitewater and Milton and had a 1-1 tie with Roswell before beating Jackson-Atlanta 10-0.
