Morgan County: Two Elite Eight teams, one coach

Morgan County has two teams playing in the Class AA quarterfinals, but the Bulldogs are doing it with one coach. In a move that harkens back to the olden days, Charlemagne Gibbons is coaching both the boys and girls basketball teams.

Gibbons, originally the boys coach, agreed a year ago to also coach the girls team because of a cash crunch with the school system. Now, two years into the process, he’s not ready to give up either job.

“I’m just a basketball guy,” said Gibbons, who played collegiately at Auburn-Montgomery.”I want to keep doing them both.”

The girls are a senior-laden team that has a 28-1 record. The No. 4-ranked Bulldogs play a fast-paced game and press from beginning to end. “We press for 32 minutes and really get after it,” Gibbons said.

The girls are led by Andrea Benford, Valencia Hawksns and Sade Weaver.

The boys are very young; they start two juniors, sophomores C.J. Turman and Davon Gibbs, and a freshman, point guard Tookie Brown, who averages 18 points.

Gibbons said the boys, who were 11-15 last year, benefited from watching the girls make a run to the quarterfinals a year ago. This year the boys are 25-4.

“They feed off each other,” Gibbons said. “The girls pushed the boys and they’ve really improved this year. They really matured over the summer.”

The girls bring a 12-game winning streak into its quarterfinal match against No. 2 Laney. It’s a rematch of last year’s quarterfinal game, which Laney won 71-67.

The No. 9-ranked boys will also play No. 3 Laney in a rematch; Laney won 53-40 at the MLK Showcase in Augusta. Morgan County has won 14 straight since that setback.
