Whitefield Academy’s 13 points allowed vs. Hebron Christian is fewest since 1947 in state tournament

Whitefield Academy held Hebron Christian to 13 points in the Class A boys first round last week.

According to Becky Taylor of the Georgia Basketball Project, that’s the fewest points allowed in the state tournament for a boys game since 1947, when Rabun Gap defeated Mansfield 64-10 in the Class C first round.

Mansfield, a little town in Newton County, ‘’really shouldn’t even count,’’ according to Taylor, ‘’as they were the only team in Class C in their region and didn’t have to win any tournament to qualify for state.’’

The last time a boys’ team in the state tournament scored less than 20 points was 1963, when West Haralson defeated Surrency 47-19. Surrency is in Appling County.

Here are the 10 teams that scored the fewest points in a state tournament game since 1970 –

1) Hebron Christian 13, Whitefield Academy 65 (2/25/2011, 1st round)
2) Marist 24, Creekside 38 (02/28/2003, 2nd round)
3) Prince Avenue Christian 25, SACA 52 (2/21/2003, 1st round)
3) Miller County 25, Wilkinson County 88 (2/26/2010, 1st round)
5) Greenforest Christian 26, Walker 50 (2/27/2002, 2nd round)
5) Westminster 26, Cass 45 (2/28/2003, 2nd round)
5) St. Pius X 26, Columbia 49 (2/24/2005, 2nd round)
8) Pope 27, Redan 45 (2/22/2003, 1st round)
8) Wilcox County 27, ECI 60 (2/20/2004, 1st round)
8) Temple 27, GAC 87 (2/26/2010, 1st round)

Not only did they only score 13 points….they only had 2 fieldgoals…count em….2!! The rest of their points were from free-throws. What a joke!

I hear Andraya Carter dislocated her shoulder during the Buford (AA) game, but went back in to finish the game. Buford by 8.

1A is lame comment….I hate disappoint you but Whitefield and Southwest Christian could beat most bigger schools in the state. If you dont remember there is some big guy who plays for Orlando that played at Southwest and he is pretty good. So lay off the smoked bananas and realize that 1A teams are pretty darn good.

Whitefield might be a top 5 or 6 team in any classification.

What has SW Christian done before or after Dwight Howard? One good player doesn’t make your team historically significant.

ok, so Whitefield beat one 5 A team…what would happen if they played a strong 5 A region?

Whitefield is the only 1A Christian school who play teams outside of the 1A class! They are repeatedly in the playoffs and state finals. Why? They have a coach (Tyrone Johnson) that not only thinks outside the box but trains each and every player. Now they have decided that these 1A class players aren’t worthy of championship status and changes the rules. Why wasn’t the ruling for all classes, not just 1A? Perhaps if the President at Whitefield would have fought this ruling with the help of others, the ruling may not have passed. Truth be told Whitefield is known for their basketball team, not for their school size or tuition cost.

@1A is weak: I am positive Coach Johnson would play anyone who would be up to the chsllenge. Don’t sleep on Christian schools the only difference between public and Christian schools is the education at a Christian school is better.

Whitefield fan I think the Walton Raiders academics will hold their own against any so called Christian School, so find another difference to use.

@Say It Ain’t So: Yes, Georgia overall test scores, including your precious Walton Raiders (whom I’ve never heard of) is included in the stats, speaks VOLUME….those scores are a joke, speaks more like a whisper! I’m from Missouri SHOW ME THE STATS of your Walton Raiders. You may have a few within the school but truth be told its not all about sports, academics should come first.
Spoken like a true public school product Aint (you left out the apostrophe). lol
