Georgia’s undefeated basketball teams since 1970

There are only four undefeated high school basketball teams entering this week’s region tournaments. Can any survive the season undefeated? It will be rare.

Miriam – You were better than great at Central. And whatever happened to Pam Johnson of Lowndes?

Those Hogansville teams–I know John Penland coached most 0of them–were a dynasty in the early 1970s. The closest the 1971 Hogansville team came to losing was at West Georgia College in the first round of the Region 5-B tournament. Eighth seeded Bremen, who had won only six regular season games, led Hogansville by 6 with just over a minute left–and this was in the days before the 3-point shot. Hogansville fouled Bremen, who couldn’t make a free throw. Hogansvile scored at the end–this avoiding being eliminated in the first round of the region tournament–and cruised after that. West Point, who was in the same county and same region, gave Hogansville a loss or two in the early seventies and Palmetto, also in the same region, played Hogansville close. However, once they got out of region play, nobody came close to the Green Wave.

I saw the 1995 and 1996 Woodward girls teams play. They were led by Kiesha Brown and she was AMAZING. I think she is still playing in the WNBA. The 1994 Marist boys team had Matt Harpring and he was unstoppable. Harpring was also a incredible QB at Marist.

John, Check your records and check the finals of the Class 5 B Region tournament held at West Georgia college. Central of Carrollton had a 57-56 lead with 7 seconds left, and had the ball. Central’s Point Guard walked with 5 seconds left, Hogansville brought the ball in on the side got it underneath and scored at the buzzer to witn 58-57. Hogansville had won the state the year before and returned every starter. The Championships won by Hogansville was started by Coach Donnie Henderson, a native of Manchester along with Manchester native,Hogansville head football coach Don Hendrix. Furthermore During the regular season Hogansville and Central had to play Central’s home game with the Greenwave at West Georgia College to accommodate the crowd. Hogansville came from behind to win that game 64-60. Hogansville was tough but they defiitely did not cruise in their own Region.

I had forgotten about the game with Central, who also had a great basketball team that year. The point I was trying to make was that Hogansville always faced tougher competition in Region 5-B than it ever did once they reached state tournament. I know John Penland didn’t start the program but he was there during more of those dynasty years than anyone else.

That SW Macon team was rid-dicu-lous…. The SW Atlanta was 31-1 with it only loss to SW Macon by couple points. Gerald Wilkins went in that night on Terry Fair.

John, just do discuss further the Hogansville-Central tie ups. In 69 and 70 Central was 24-3. We were scheduled to play Hogansville in Hogansville and got snowed out. So Donnie called me to lets cancel my home game too. He was undefeated and at the time we were too. I would have loved to have whipped him and he would have loved to whip me. We were high school teammates for 4 years at Manchester. More adversaries than friends due to our competitiveness. Donnie passed away with cancer 3 years ago. He was coaching in Berrien County at the time. c He was quite an athlete. Tjhanks for the trip down memory lane.

That Westlake team in 1999 was a beast. Led by AJ Moye. We have the Georgia record for an undefeated season with 33 wins. The Westlake program has been running strong ever since undefeated in Georgia this year!!!!

@ Cochs’sson. No doubt. The 1999 Westlake team was a beast….One of the best in Ga. state history. But they weren’t the first great Westlake team. Check out the 1990 Wetlake team. Went to the Final Four and loss by 2 points to Albany. That team was led by Clarence Thrash (6′8 all state center).

The Clay County bunch in 1978 was a talented and brawling bunch. They got into a fight on their own team bus with one another but found a way to get it together and end up 30-0 with a state title. Hard to top something like that.

Joe Wiliams – coach of three of these teams as one poster mentioned – hasn’t gotten the credit he deserves. Georgia lost a great coach last year.

1st note: Pam Johnson died about 20 years ago.

2nd: Williams won titles at three different schools, in a weird way. Randolph-Clay, Clay County, and Speight. Speight’s title was in 1969 (and a double crown, but Williams didn’t coach the girls). Unfortunately, coverage of those games are very, very limited and it’s unknown if they were undefeated or not.

Thanks, BT. Did not know that about Pam Johnson. She was a star player for the Lowndes’ dynasty that challenged Taylor County’s record winning streak.

Great reading blogs like this that talk about the history of Georgia Sports! That Lowndes girls team in the late 70’s was a powerhouse.
