HS rankings: Jordan, Model take No. 1 in AA … Milton beats Wheeler … Norcross upset … and other news

Two new No. 1 teams this week – Jordan’s boys and Model’s girls.

We’re trying something a little different this week in that we’re adding some commentary to each class. It’s a little heavy on the boys side this week, but we’ll balance it more next week when we get the routine down.

No. 1 Milton beat Wheeler 65-60 in a boys game on Saturday as Tevin Glass had 23 points and 12 rebounds for Milton. (See MDJ story.) Wheeler’s Chuck Mitchell scored 30. Both players are their teams’ top inside players. … Previous No. 5 Norcross was upset by unranked Stephenson 51-48 on Saturday. Is that score right? Stephenson is 5-16. … No. 2 Shiloh went 2-1 in a tournament in Florida and blew a four-point lead in the final 90 seconds in the defeat. … No. 3 Westlake needed two overtimes to beat Marcus Hunt-led North Clayton 75-75. … No. 8 Berkmar beat unranked Alpharetta 65-62 on Saturday when Brandon Thompson hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer. … No. 5 Mill Creek lost 59-39 to G.W. Carver of Montgomery, the No. 1-ranked team in Alabama’s Class 6A. G.W. Carver also beat Shiloh 74-58 earlier this season. … Johnson-Savannah (17-4, 14-0) beat previous No. 8 Savannah 64-55 on Saturday to take control of Region 3. See Savannah Morning News story. Savannah (17-2) has suffered both of its losses to Johnson. … No. 7 Harrison beat middling South Cobb 89-81 on Saturday, avenging one of Harrison’s five losses. Harrison is 8-0 since New Year’s Day. .. No big changes in the girls rankings this week.

There are two new teams more in the ever-changing girls top 10. Warner Robins replaces Northside-Warner Robins after the Demons won their head-to-head matchup on Friday 45-43 on a last-second shot. … Jonesboro returns to the rankings at No. 9, taking advantage of previous No. 10 Osborne’s 62-38 loss to Douglas County. … Also joining the rankings this week are Drew (replacing Oconee County in Class AAA) and Heard County (replacing East Hall in AA)

In the boys rankings, Woodland-Cartersville jumped five spots to No. 5 after beating previous No. 5 Chattahoochee 66-51 on Saturday in a Region 7 showdown. … Region 3, Div. B, leader Alcovy, which entered the rankings at No. 8 this week, has won 10 straight, including a 59-53 victory over Chamblee on Saturday. Chamblee had upset No. 2 Miller Grove the week before but suffered a pair of losses last week. The other was against No. 3 Southwest DeKalb. Douglas County (20-1) took a two-game lead in 15-team Region 5 by beating Osborne 106-89 this week and moved up two spots. Osborne (18-3, 9-2) dropped out of the rankings.

No. 6 Carrollton’s boys had a wild ride this week. The Trojans beat previous No. 6 Troup 70-39 on Tuesday, avenging a defeat, lost to unranked Shaw 57-54 on Friday, then stunnded Gadsden City – ranked No. 7 in Alabama’s highest classification – 69-54 on Saturday. … No. 7 North Hall won its 12th straight game with a 79-72 victory over East Hall, which had been ranked No. 10 in Class AA.

Class AA has a new No. 1 girls team for the third consecutive week as Model moves in to the top spot. Buford, which has been No. 1 twice this season only to lose the following week, lost to Wesleyan 60-49 on Saturday and fell to No. 3. Laney moves up from No. 4 to No. 2. … Region 6 has four teams in the top seven, and the race in Division A could be decided by two big games this week. No. 6 Decatur, in second place, travels to first-place Buford on Tuesday and then hosts No. 7 GAC, the third-place team, on Friday. Lovett, which is ranked No. 5, faces South Atlanta on Tuesday in a game that could determine the regular-season champion in Division B. …

Butler’s boys upset previous No. 1 Greater Atlanta Christian 66-65 on Saturday in Augusta. Ronald Jones had 15 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots. … The new No. 1 team is Jordan, which avenged one of its two losses – to Manchester – with a 71-55 win on Friday. Jordan’s losses are by one point (to Northside) and in overtime (to Manchester). … No. 4 Buford lost to unranked Wesleyan (13-8) of Class A 43-40 on Saturday. … No. 10 Laney dropped a few notches after losing to erratic Dublin 69-54.

No. 1 North Cobb Christian (21-0) beat Mount Paran Christian (16-4) 65-49 on Friday. There’s not a team with a winning record standing in NCC’s way of a 25-0 regular season. Mount Paran had upset previous No. 10 Greenforest Christian earlier in the week. … No. 5 Wilcox County beat No. 7 Lanier County 60-53 on Tuesday in a Region 2 crossover game. … Previous No. 6 Landmark Christian (15-2) lost to Class AAAAA McIntosh 46-44 on Saturday.

Todd, before all the uneducated posters, who know nothing about strength of schedule, playing the top teams around the country or even looking to find out why a 6th place team in their region is not ranked, I think these rankings are pretty much what should be. Good job, as you would say, it might not be perfect, but it’s damn close.

Though Johnson has 2 more losses than Savannah. They have beaten SHS twice in region, which I would say makes them ranked higher. For the guy looking for respect for Pope, the are in 6th place in their own region. Wheeler and Miller Grove, though their records look unimpressive, they have played top notch teams from across the country and Ga., but only have 3 losses between them to Georgia teams (all currently ranked or ranked previous). So their rankings are justified IMO. Last their are only 10 spots for the top 10, sometimes teams that could be ranked, don’t fit. There might not be much of a difference for teams egging around 11-15, to those ranked at the bottom of the top 10. The rankings are fine as they are, but if your team is not ranked and you have a beef, let your team show up tourney time and prove yourself. No need to roar now, last I saw there are 32 teams in each classification, not 10, huff and puff then.

Todd this is not correct….

“There’s not a team with a winning record standing in NCC’s way of a 25-0 regular season.”

NCCS plays McCallie 2-7-2012. McCallie, 17-1, is ranked #1 in Division II in Tennessee.

Did you really leave walnut grove out of aaa’s top 10 again? They beat Gainesville for the 2nd time then beat a good west hall team on west halls home floor by 30+. Their resume is more impressive than Monroe, Grady, allatoona, n hall, and drew. They will be ranked either 4 or 5 in the coaches poll tomorrow. Don’t snub an obvious choice just for the sake of being different. It’s unbecoming.

The Buford Athletics Booster conglomorate has recently adopted a new ‘Slogan’ for their programs. Students and faculty jointly chose the new slogan by an open, signed ballot system –

The new slogan, a surprise ‘Write-In’ winner was originally to be chosen from the following nominated candidates:

1. “NO! We will never ‘Play up’!

2. “So what if our girls teams have five o’clock shadow”

3. “The recent allegations that we recruit our cheerleaders is a lie, (But a good idea!)

4. “Who needs Probsts’ Alabama contacts, money talks louder”

5. “Pruitts’ gone from Fitzgerald? Good, that leaves only Calhoun”

And by no means least,

“Bacon wrapped tenderloin and Split Florida Lobster Tail at the concession stands or bust!”

The clever write in winner, “The best that money can buy”, is to be painted on all area water towers, inlayed in the foyer of the school lobby in two foot lettering with gemstones as closely resembling the school colors as possible, and installed in high intensity LED’s on the underside of the Lear jet the budgetary council recently allocated funds for to alleviate the extreme discomfort all athletes have complained of on away games falling outside a thirty mile radius of the their Buford academic complex.

Congratulations to this forward thinking organization. Truly the undisputed leader in, and the guiding beacon of the future of Georgia Secondary School athletics

Todd, I would not call Dublin Boys erractic. They just don’t match up well with East Laurens. I agree with you that right now they should not be ranked but neither should Laney. We drilled them by 15 in their place & that is hard to do. I think everybody on our side of the sub-region will beat Laney. (East Laurens, Bleckley Co. and Dodge Co.) Our region is going to raise some sand in the state tournament, mark my word.

I would have to agree with AAAbasketballknowitall. How do you leave out a Walnut Grove out of the top ten with a 19-3 record with impressive wins over Archer who was a elite 8 team from last year returning all starts twice (once in scrimmage by 20+ and during the regular season by 10+). Also beating power house Gainesville twice and two losses to a very talented Newton county team and the other loss to a county rival. Obviously whoever comes out with this poll does not have much knowledge about this years basketball teams and just rank based on schools history. Its a shame those kids who have worked hard don’t get the credit they deserve.

The correct score to the westlake-north clayton was 75-73, i dont understand why NCHS cant get any recognition, we beat #9 lovejoy and held our own against #7 jonesboro .. we demand respect.. everyone thought that westlake was gonna bully us.. not even.. game was lost by luck, ball got stuck on an attempted dunk.. only reason.. go eagles

Todd, I agree with your #1’s and the fact that you have Alcovy finally in the top 10. However, get Monroe out of top ten in AAA and add Walnut Grove. Their resume is much more impressive. Also, start to give some respect to 2 AAAAA as they have five solid teams with little respect; Westlake, Newton, MLK, Langston Hughes, and Luella. After all their 6th seed at this point just beat a previously ranked Norcross. Wheeler is too young and erratic to be #4 at 10-8. Yes they play a national schedule but that doesn’t mean you just place them at #4. Also, GAC may have the best coach in Georgia but they just lost to a solid but unranked AAA team in Butler, thus, #2 in AA may be a little high.

Everyone who wants Monroe out of the top 10 are wrong. They are clearly the best team in AAA Albany, Ga this year and are ranked for a reason. The stars of Jr. forward 6″7 Mcgee and senior center 6″8 Gilbert will prove their belonging in the top 10. Also watch out come playoff time for a sleeping giant in Westover to wake up and play playoff basketball. Traditional top teams are hard to eliminate from the top rankings.

WACo is the only team with both boys and girls undefeated. Thing is South Ga,teams in the Atl area play tough out of state schedules. In fairness, still sad that many here didnt live anywhere near the school they play for.

I think if is time to separate the private schools, public schools and city schools. It is not fair that the public schools get to recruit from the AAU basketball leagues. Why wont Ga. Hig School look into the recruiting practices of public schools in the AAU league.

To former coach. Is it fair for private schools to offer scholarships just for a good athlete that wouldn’t be considered if he couldn’t play a lick. Is it fair to have foreign kids who transfer in but cant get in public schools. Stop looking at how to stop the moving and look at why they’re moving.
