New HS basketball rankings: Fayette County replaces Miller Grove at No. 1 in AAAA; GAC boys, Buford girls also take top spots

Fayette County and Greater Atlanta Christian are new No. 1 boys teams while Buford’s girls regained the their top ranking in the high school basketball rankings this week.

Fayette County’s boys, who made the Class AAAA semifinals last year but have never won a state title, replaced three-time defending champion Miller Grove, which lost Friday to Chamblee in a Region 6-AAAA game. Miller Grove has nine losses, but Chamblee was the first Georgia team to defeat the Wolverines in over a year.

In AA boys, defending champion Greater Atlanta Christian replaced Vidalia, which lost to Long County 70-68 on Tuesday.

In AA girls, Buford returned to No. 1 after a 58-44 victory on Saturday against Lovett, the previous No. 1 team, which dropped to No. 5. The return of Andraya Carter, the 2011 Class AA player of the year who has missed most of the season with a torn ACL, should provide a big boost for Buford down the stretch.

New this week to the boys rankings are Tift County, North Gwinnett and Harrison in AAAAA, Chamblee and Osborne in AAAA, North Hall and Grady in AAA, Laney and East Hall in AA and Athens Christian in A. Out are Marietta, Berkmar and M.L. King in AAAAA, Brunswick and Woodland-Cartersville in AAAA, Franklin County and Walnut Grove in AAA, Early County and Morgan County in AA and Wesleyan in A.

There are five new girls teams in the rankings, including two in a wide-open AAAA. Redan and Rockdale County, the previous No. 9 and 10 teams, were replaced by Northside-Warner Robins and Osborne.

Other changes in the top 10s were Lowndes replacing North Cobb in AAAAA, Westside-Macon replacing Americus-Sumter in AAA and East Hall returning after a one-week absence, replacing Rabun County in AA.

The top two teams in Class A both lost last week but held their position in the rankings. No. 1 Wesleyan lost 46-43 on Saturday to Bob Jones, one of the top teams in Alabama’s Class 6A. No. 2 St. Francis gave Wesleyan a battle before losing 67-54 on Friday. The top five teams in Class A remained the same, while there was some minor shuffling in the other spots.

In Boys AAAAA, how can a 1 loss Savannah High team be ranked 8th behind 4 teams with 4 or more losses? Including Wheeler who has lost 6 games and Norcross who has lost 7 games?

These polls get funnier every week.

How can 11-7 Norcross be ranked above 12-7 North Gwinnett when North just beat Norcross at Norcross? The Coach’s poll doesn’t even have Norcross in the top 10.

Wheeler is 9-8. with the vast resources of the AJC, I would think that you could get your facts straight.

Morgan Co. is 13-4 with 3 of the losses coming to teams ranked in the top 10 of their state( 2 teams top 5 in alabama). I think they will be the big sleeper when it comes tournament time. As well as Dublin High school is going to shock some people as well. Dont sleep on the south this year.

Hats off to those Fayette County Teams boys and girls. They just reload year after year. I thought after last season the boys team run would be over but that coach got this new squad right in the thick of things. After the girls won the State Championship with five scholarship players off to college last year they have also reloaded. If I had kids this is where they would go plus get a “Great Education”. Wow

You are right SportS Observer, Fayette County teams reload year after year and have been I know for the last 7 years now. Great coaches and a darn good program athletically and academically.

Tony – You’re kinda negative today, IMHO. You need to read ”The Energy Bus.” …

re: Norcross-North Gwinnett. Are you saying that if one team beats another, that team automatically must be ranked higher? If someone wants to rank North Gwinnett higher, that’s fine. There’s little difference between #3 and #10 But Norcross does have fewer in-state losses and has played a tougher schedule, IMO.

re: Wheeler. I’m sure you have the correct record, but we’re not going to chase every score. I’m sorry. Too many teams. The Associated Press doesn’t attempt to track down W-L records in their records, and our records are up-to-date than gasports. I asked Coach Lip the team’s record after the Etowah game, and he said 6-5 after the Etowah game, and I believe they’re 3-1 since then. If you’ve got better info, then just let us know. We’ll fix it.

”Why is Portal High School at 15-1 not ranked?”

Skeptism about Portal’s region and schedule, which went 1-4 last season in the playoffs. Portal is 15-1, yet tied for first after splitting two games with Montgomery County, an 8-10 team. Note that Wilkinson beat Montgomery 72-29.

Sorry you have to defend nearly EVERY ranking! I don’t envy you.

“Why isn’t (insert fav school here) ranked in the top 10?!? They beat (insert inferior comp’ here) and St. Joe’s school for the armless by 40, and still haven’t made your top ten. You suck!”

To all out there in the hinterlands……play a Metro ATL Region schedule, survive it by beating other top 10 teams, THEN you can come here and complain about being snubbed

A loss, to some degree, can turn out later to be a great victory. Miller Grove, rightfully so, has to prove that they are the best team in Class AAAA. Although it is hard to look at, I would not look to much into records at this point. Fayette County has always been a strong intense team. Depending how the brackets fall, I can see them being a Final Four team. Coach White is going to show, why he is one of the best at what he does.

The Chamblee loss is a great way to get the entire team focused. Tony Parker is the best player in the state, but needs his supporting cast to play at a higher level. Like I stated last week, the real season has commenced.

@Old Ball w Laces………. thats part of journalism………. people are always gonna question proclamations and statements. You cant expect the public to just blindly follow everything said in the papers or television.
If the ajc wants to be a credible and respected media outlet or if a writer wants to be taken seriously they must win over the critics. There will always be a point when the naysayers will want justification and proof
I would like for writers to do a lil more research, but hey I understand the profession. But rankings are no big deal, theres a reason they play the games. It’d be nice to see the rankings published alongside the final season standings

In regards to MGH rankings I think they were over hyped from the beginning. Very good program but with what they had coming back this year I knew they weren’t that good. Their guard play is very suspect and it showed against good competition. I don’t think they represented GA basketball that well with a record of 1-8. last year team would have fared much better. That 4th title in a row will much tougher to come by. Best team in the state they may not even be the best team in their region.

Well said, Johnny. I agree w/ you.

I don’t mind defending the rankings. It makes us work a little hard, knowing that they’ll be critiqued. Sometimes we’re right, sometimes wrong. Some readers make a lot of great points. Others don’t. :) Rankings are just an invitation to discuss high school basketball in Georgia. Not trying to make them more than that. Have fun w/ them. Tell us where we goofed. If you think a team was slighted or underrated, then give that team its due. I’d prefer that readers be civil about it, but I guess that’s part of the game sometimes. Blog on.

Youre going to be hard pressed to find 10 aaa teams in the state that have more impressive resumes than walnut grove. They lost twice early to a strong aaaaa newton team that has had some close losses to other great teams and could make a very deep playoff run come march. Their 1 other loss was to county rival Monroe area and that was a game that they let slip through their fingers after blowing a 15 point lead (also beat that Monroe team by 20+). 17-3 with double digit wins on the road over aaaaa archer (who is themselves having a very good season after returning the bulk off last years sweet 16 team) and perineal powerhouse Gainesville. I saw where you had them ranked last poll and feel they should be in your next 1 if they take care of Gainesville and west hall this week.

ODOG and Sports Observer…. It’s called recruiting!!! Fayette Co. has a good program becuase they get kids to come there form other counties like Clayton or Coweta! Most of there Great talent they have gotten in the recent years didn’t even attend the feeder M.S…. ask yourself why??? It;s called recruit them thru AAU and get them an address or have them move into district. I will say this they do have some really good coaches over at FCHS. But they do recruit!!!

Strength of schedule is a big contributing factor. If Miller Grove played Fayette County they would beat them handedly. We played both teams this year Miller Grove in the summer and Fayette County the first game of the season. Miller Grove is the better team tons more talent. We beat Fayette by 20 or so. But the beauty of it all is that in less than a month it all will sort itself out. Westlake High we know this 5AAAAA we coming!!!

AJC is still looking over south GA school. Savannah high School have not lost a game since the last state rankings came out but drop down from #7 to # 8 don’t make no since to me the only team in the top 10 that has 1 loss everyone else has 2 or more losses. Also effingham County 1 loss in AAAA and just move up 1 spot after Miller Grove lost again and drop from being #1 to #2 come on. There are several teams in AAAA that should be ranked higher then Miller Grove. Richmond Hill girls 17-1 and not even ranked thats crazy. Savannah High has beat several Alanta teams during the Christmas Break winning both Holiday Classic. Sooner or later they will have to show us some respect down here in south ga.

Why isn’t Drew Girls team ranked higher in class AAA? They have a record of 16-4 and you have Columbia 11-5 (4th) St. Pius 15-6 (3rd) and Carterville 14-4 (9th) all these teams are ranked higher than Charles Drew girls team. I guess them making it to State last year means no respect this year. Come on AJC show them girls the respect they deserve.

all this love for teams with 9 n 7 losses in 4A,while Pope is 17-3. Double OT lost to bigger Brookwood and then a 4 n 5point lost. I know MGHS n SWD play tough out of state schedules but come on! Now u can move Chamblee out!

Buzz War Eagle is right. I have trained many of Fayette Co. High School kids over the years and they are home groan. If you look at the middle school, 9th grade, Junior Varsity you will understand. They are good year after year. They are really good. Fayette County High School produce great athletes year after year. The coaches of all programs are on the same page. Middle thru AAU to girls and boys varsity.

I don’t understand why you would replace North Cobb for Lowndes county. North Cobb plays in the hardest region against teams such as McEachern and Hillgrove. Both times this season, they have come closer to beating McEachern than any other team. Lowndes county wouldn’t hold a stick to the competition in our region. That has been proven year after year.

Buzz is right

January 27th, 2012
9:33 pm

Buzz is correct. Fayette County does recruit.

They might have all boys from Fayetteville on the team this year War Eagle but trust me Fayette Co has recruited players in the past. Noel Johnson who was a top 50 player coming out of high school who now plays at Auburn transfered to Fayette from near by Lovejoy in Clayton Co. Also going back years ago McIntosh’s best player two years in a row transfered to Fayette Co for their senior years. Your telling me families are moving from Peachtree City right next door to Fayetteville? Highly doubt it since they are so close. Same goes for Noel Johnson who transfered from Lovejoy. Lovejoy may be in Clayton Co but Lovejoy high school isn’t any farther than McIntosh H.S. is from Fayette Co. H.S. Also I know Fayette Co coach recruits. I have seen him bring in two brothers from FCHS to play at another high school in Fayette Co when Fayette’s current coach, coached at a different school.
