HS basketball rankings: Milton boys, Douglas County, Lovett girls are new No. 1’s

Milton is the new No. 1 boys team in Class AAAAA after an impressive tournament victory in Erie, Pa., on Saturday.

Milton defeated four-time New York Class A champion Jamesville-Dewitt 93-52 in the final of the Burger King Classic as Evan Nolte scored 23 points, 12 on 3-pointers.

Milton (13-4) took the place of Shiloh (13-2), which lost to Berkmar 46-45 on Friday. Milton has lost four games, but three by forfeit over the ineligibility of point guard Charles Mann. Since Mann returned to the lineup, Milton has not lost.

There are two other No. 1 teams, both in the girls rankings.

Douglas County (15-1), which reached the state semifinals last season, took advantage of losses by previous No. 1 Chamblee (to Redan) and No. 2 Alcovy (to Newton) to move up from its No. 3 spot last week in AAAA.

In AA, Lovett (14-3) moves up one place into the top spot. Buford, the previous No. 1 team, dropped to No. 3 after losing to Alpharetta 60-42 on Saturday. Buford will have a chance perhaps to reclaim the No. 1 ranking when its hosts Lovett on Saturday.

Also noteworthy in the rankings is Miller Grove’s hold on to No. 1 among AAAA boys despite losing two of three games last week in the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions in Springfield, Mo. Miller Grove lost to Christ the King of New York 79-76 in overtime Saturday after leading by 14 points in the first quarter.

Miller Grove is 9-7 with losses in seven of its last 10 games, but is the three-time defending Georgia champion and undefeated against Georgia teams.

New boys teams in the rankings are Berkmar for Luella in AAAAA and Troup and Monroe for LaGrange and Westover in AAA.

In the girls rankings, there is one new team in the top 10 in each classification this week. Beach replaces Mill Creek in AAAAA; Redan replaces Jonesboro in AAAA; Oconee County replaces North Hall in AAA; North Oconee replaces East Hall in AA; and Gordon Lee replaces Towns County in A.

I know exactly who Miller Grove lost to. That said, a 7 loss team can’t be ranked 1. I don’t care if all of your loses have come to the Miami Heat, you have to drop in the rankings when you have that many losses.

I do not get into the message boards for basketball but I need to make this comment.

There is no reason under the sun that Miller Grove should be ranked number one with a 9-7 record. I do not care if their loses came to out of state competition and they are undefeated in Georgia but not all teams have the luxury of playing a national schedule.

I agree with Tom and that Miller Grive should not be ranked as high (if at all) with a 9-7 record.

Look at it like we do on the football side of things. Would Camden Co. be ranked at the top of the rankings if four of their games were against teams from Florida and all were loses just as long as they won a game against someone in Georgia?

Long story short, move them from the top spot because they do not deserve it.

Miller grove is 3 times better than Fayette County thats why there still ranked #1. Westlake we beat Fayete County by 20. The teams Miller Grove plays are light years ahead of our region schedules lets just be serious. If you seen these guys play you know there the best in there classification!!

@Tom and Compernicus,

I understand your argument, but lets not looking into numbers. While their record is only 9-7, Miller Grove remains the top team in the state of Georgia. All of their losses have come to nationally ranked opponents, most notably #3 Oak Hill (VA), #1 Simeon (IL), #4 St. Anthony (NJ), #25 Bishop Gorman (NV), Christ the King (NY). All of the games, outside of St. Antony–where the team was probably tired from playing four games in 5 days-Miller Grove lost by four points or less.

Another reason why they remain No.1 is the mere fact that no team in Georgia has defeated them. Not saying they can be beat, but playing a higher level of competition and a national schedule is the primary reason why the team could pull off the first four-peat in a large classification.

I look forward to watching the second half of the season. I think class AAAA will be interesting with Milton, Shiloh, Westlake, Norcross and M.L. King in others in the race. Miller Grove will be the favorite in class AAAA, but Fayette has that big game experience and can score. Southwest DeKalb has the talent, but lack in other areas. Lovejoy and Jonesboro will contend also.

@ Mr. Wolverine

I completely understand that Miller Grove has not lost to anyone in Georgia and your logic is right on with saying they are the best in the state. However, by limiting the number of teams you play in your home state, you limit the number of times you can lose in your home state. Miller Grove only plays 2 or 3 games outside of Region 6AAAA so they are limiting themselves to only their region. In my opinion it is not safe to say that they are the best team in Georgia because they are not playing many teams from Georgia.

Look at the other teams in the state top 10, look at their records, and look at the amount of games in Georgia and one could argue that in order to be the best in Georgia you have to play the teams in Georgia. It would be like an English soccer team only playing teams from Ireland and boasting they are the best in England.

Miller Grove may very well be the best team in the sate this year and I certainly agree that by playing national powerhouses you make yoruself better (especially if the home state talent is not near the national level). I just feel that overall record should mean something and just because you have three straight titles and have the opportunity to play throughout the nation does not “automatically” constitute you as the “best team in the state.”

Looking forward to the second half of the season and how things play out in the tournament.

Best of luck to to you all at Miller Grove but staying true to my boys and saying GO HOOCH!!

”If you leave outside the Atlanta area, dont expect to see your team nowhere in the rankings.”

I count about 40-45 teams outside of the Atlanta area in the rankings. That’s out of 100, so it’s over 40 percent. Meanwhile, over the past two seasons, 30 of the 40 state finalists have been from metro ATL, a full 75 percent. Of the rest, 5 are south Georgia, 2 are north Georgia, 3 are middle Georgia. Given that, why shouldn’t metro ATL teams dominate the rankings? That’s where most of the best teams are. That said, there are several outstanding south Georgia teams, and many of them are ranked highly here (Vidalia is #1, Statesboro & Westover are #2). I hope one of them wins it.

Why is Parkview girls ranked #2. Ok, I see the 18-0 record, but let’s be honest. Their schedule is WEAK. It’s like playing middle school teams. Play some real teams and then let’s talk about rankings. In no way could they hang with a team such as Norcross girls, Columbia girls or Stephenson girls.

I am not understanding why milton is the ranked #1 in the state class AAAAA. Savannah High 15-1 and has the best record in the top 10 is still at #7. Shiloh lost and drop one spot to #2. this is starting to look like college BCS standing. Effingham one of the best school in AAAA is 14-1 only losing to a top 10 ranked school in the nation is still ranked #5 in the state Miller Grove lost 7 games and still ranked #1, Douglas County 15-0 ranked #3 come on people. Savannah High should be ranked # 1 in the state. They have to start giving these team down south some respect.

I 2nd that motion Eagle Pride. Columbia has been the most dominant program in the state since 2005. They have won 4 state championships in the last 6 years. They lost in the championship in 2007 and the semi-finals in 2009 to eventual champ South Atlanta. They have destroyed AAA & will win their 3rd in a row this year.

Mr. Wolverine

January 18th, 2012

@Eagle Pride and decaturfinest,

One question. How can you be the best team in the state, when you not the best team within your own zip code or county. Columbia is no doubt a formidable and respeceted program, but I can only say that they are the best program outside of AAAA and AAAAA. Within the last three years the Eagles lost to Miller Grove last year in the regular season, while suffering two more beatings during the preseason. You guys need to give MG the respect they deserve.

I won’t argue that you may have the best floor general in the state, but I would take MG’s team over Columbia anyday. In my opinion, your most talented team in Columbia’s history lost to Tucker in 2007, after blowing a nice 4th quarter lead. **Quick fact, two NBA players played in that game (Marshon Brooks and Travis Leslie, Columbia-off the bench).**

Nobody will dare to play a schedule as tough as MG’s. Although the team is clearly not as experienced or talented as last season’s squad which finish No. 5 nationally, MG’s battled tested schedule should benefit their run in the second half of the season. I can recall in 2010, MG had the same record and blew through the state competition. In fact, they defeated Tucker in the finals by over 30 points.

Can MG be beat? Yes. Will it happen, however, depends on how the team responds during this adverse time. Losing six games to teams in the top 25 by four points our less can be tough on anyone.

Who are we? Mighty MG! What’s Inside! Wolverine Pride!

Mr. Wolverine did u just say something about 2 scrimmage games or preseason game whatever you want to call them they dont count. So MG has beaten Columbia 1 time in games that count and that wad on some questionable calls and last sec tip in. MG never won a title until Columbia left AAAA. Please dont mention a preseason game they dont count. MG has great program & I respwct what they have done but the Eagles has owned MG in games that count.

Columbia for the last two years i give the node of best team to Miller Grove, simply because they won the game last year. Both teams are great and any one could beat the other on a given night. True that Columbia does own millergrove, MG has only one win against Columbia during the regular season. I think its something like 1-6, but MG is a new school, but records are records. Question is after this years class will MG be able to compete. OK now lets look at GA basketball and can any other county say they are better overall than DEKALB County. So to all you other County’s you may see us debating what team is the best MGHS, CHS, MLK, SWD, TUCKER, the list goes on, believe that we all agree that the best basketball is played in Dekalb.

MG is the best team in AAAA and Number 2 at the lowest regardless of class because of thier play, not because of sponsorship. Sponsorship gives opportunity Play gains respect.Columbia probally has more sponsorship than any team in the State from such a strong Alumni base, which would be impossible for MG to have since they opened in either 06 or 05, But that is not what makes Columbia one of the best teams on the floor.

@insidelookingout, decatur’s finest

First and foremost, good morning to all. Secondly, I will address decatur’s finest rebuttle before address the absurdity that insidelookingout posted this morning. What Coach White has done for this program is unprecedented. Although the school has a brief history, MG has reached the Class AAAA State Playoffs five out of six years, Class AAAA Final Four four consecutive seasons, to match its three consectuive Class AAAA State Championships. No team from the state’s best bball county can every own to such status.

While Columbia has more titles, four within the last since 2006, I can say that right now, Miller Grove has the momentum to continue to take this program to the next level. The team finished 32-1 last year, which knocked them out of the National Championship contention; but the team finished in the top five. Although our record against National Competition is 1-8 this season, the Wolverines still remain on course to win a fourth consecutive state championship.

Insidelookingout,

Neither you or myself don’t have inside scoop as to why MG and Columbia didn’t play this year, so you really don’t have an argument. I can say this, look at MG’s schedule and Columbia’s schedule. No comparison. You may have one or two teams that can play, but for the past month, MG has battled against some of the nation’s best players and teams on National Television. As far as Bishop Long is concerned, he is a sponsor for Miller Grove bball, what does that have to do with anything on the court? Like your grammar, your comment was absurd and has no merit in the argument. Nike and Geico are the primary sponsors for tournaments, trips, National Scheduling, etc..

@bball72, like you stated, DeKalb basketball is on fire now. Look out for SWD, MLK and Tucker.

Dekalb is not the top local county in Round-Ball. Clayton has Jonesboro, Lovejoy and North Clayton. All three are playing good ball this year and at one point were all in the top ten. Jonesboro and Lovejoy are currently still there in the AAAA poll and Drew in the AAA poll. Jonesboro and Lovejoy both played in the Elite Eight last year and look to be headed back. @insidelookingout Last time I checked, when ghsa reclassified in 2008, Columbia elected to stay down in AAA making it impossible for MG to trumph them for a state championship. If the eagles are big and bad like you say they are, they would have stayed up with the big boys of 6AAAA which is by the way the toughest region in the state bar none and it is has consecutively for the past 6-7 years crowned the state champ. You can also look at the fact of how long it took Columbia to capture a state championship and compare that to MG. I am a BIG Dekalb fan, but the facts are the facts.
