Miller Grove, the top-ranked boys team in Georgia’s Class AAAA, broke a five-game losing streak against out-of-state teams with a 73-47 victory over St. Rita of Chicago on Thursday in the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions in Springfield, Mo., but the Wolverines came up short in the semifinals on Friday, losing 64-61 to Lincoln of San Diego.
Tony Parker had 20 points and 10 rebounds against Lincoln, which got 27 points from junior Tyree Robinson and 12 points from his twin brother, Tyrell. In the victory over St. Rita, the Wolverines were led by Georgia signee Brandon Morris, who had 17 points and six rebounds. Parker had nine points and eight rebounds in the opener.
Miller Grove will take on Christ the King of Middle Village, N.Y. in Saturday’s third-place game. Lincoln will play Westbury Christian of Houston in the championship game. Westbury Christian is ranked No. 33 nationally in the latest ESPN poll, one spot ahead of Miller Grove.
On Monday, the Wolverines will face No. 4-ranked St. Anthony of New Jersey as part of the Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass. The 11 a.m. game will be televised on ESPNU. Miller Grove (8-6) returns to Georgia competition on Wednesday at home against Region 6-AAAAA rival Marist.
*MLK Tournament: Three ranked Class AAAA teams (two boys, one girls) will be among the 12 teams participating in the MLK Holiday Tournament at Centennial High School in Roswell on Monday. The top-ranked Chamblee girls, who lost their first game of the season on Tuesday against Redan, will meet Class A Providence Christian at 9:15 a.m. Chattahoochee’s boys, ranked No. 7, meet Alpharetta at 12:45 p.m., and the second-ranked Fayette County boys play Walton at 4:15 p.m. Other games include Centennial vs. Sprayberry (girls, 11 a.m.), Dunwoody vs. Wesleyan (boys, 2:30 p.m.) and Stockbridge vs. Centennial (boys, 6 p.m.).
*Top-10 matchup: The ninth-ranked Rockdale County girls team, which established itself as the team to beat in Region 8-AAAA with an overtime victory over Cedar Shoals on Tuesday, suffered its first loss of the season to a Georgia opponent when it fell to No. 8 Miller Grove 36-33 on Friday. It was a rematch of last year’s first-round state tournament game, which Miller Grove won 45-38 on its way to a spot in the quarterfinals. Miller Grove improved to 9-3, while Rockdale County fell to 13-2 (its other loss came against J.L. Mann of South Carolina in a holiday tournament).
