Early gauge of the new regions: Class AA
3:00 am December 27, 2011, by GHSF Daily
| Here are three observations about the regions that will make up Class AA in 2012:
*Defending state champion Calhoun has won 11 consecutive region titles and appears to be in a good position to extend that streak in 2012. The Yellow Jackets’ region contains no other team rated higher than No. 13 (Pepperell) by the Maxwell Ratings, and Calhoun is 9-0 against Pepperell since 1980.
*The state’s smallest region in any classification will be 6-AA, which will have just five teams. If Hapeville Charter chooses to play a non-region schedule, then Greater Atlanta Christian, Lovett, Westminster and Wesleyan will have automatic playoff berths, although all four teams are regular playoff participants regardless of the size of their regions.
*The strongest region, according to Maxwell, will be 1-AA, which will have perennial playoff teams Fitzgerald, Brooks County, Cook and Thomasville. All four teams are rated among the top nine in Class AA, and Early County is No. 17. Even the region’s lowest-rated team (Berrien at No. 46) has a higher rating than at least one team in every other region.
The chart below might give you a feel for strength of regions and the teams to beat next year.
Make sure you understand how it works:
*The W-L record is each school’s record over the past five years.
*The rating on the right is each team’s power rating for the 2011 season, according to the computer-generated Maxwell Ratings.
*The ranking on the left is how Maxwell ranks each of the schools in Class AA, based on their 2011 results.

A region with automatic playoff spots — that is a joke. That region should not get 4 spots then.

Agreed, no region should have a guarantee for playoffs for all 4 teams. Need to pull in closest teams from surrounding regions to get more teams.

The people that dfo this are idiots or influenced or just dont care…. there needs to be a leader on this thing with integrity that cares most for the student-athletes and about fairness and equality. Put some of the dominating schools that pull from a larger and all-county population in with schools with a larger enrollment because the dominating schools are pulling from as large or larger population even though they are smaller. The BEST athletes from the ENTIRE county are going to ONE county school(Buford for example) basically and that is unfair to EVERYONE, especially the schools who have little chance year-after-year of winning a state championship and that is taking away kids dreams and how they too can treat others unfairly and that is wrong and unfair and people should be ashamed of doing this. What kind of people are doing this and why and how are they getting away with it? I mean EVERY year many schools have no chance of competing because of high schools with stacked rosters due to unfair advantage in the population and them getting the best athletes year after year after year after year…….

I agree its ridic that a region has 5 teams.. but luckily thaat particular region, 6-AA has 4 really strong teams that alwasy have very respectable squads. GAC, Lovett, Westminster and Wesleyan have teams that should always be in the top 15 or 20 teams in AA. So no absolute joke of a team will get in out of this region. Thats the good news.
