Observer,ok if thats how you want to define recruiting so be it.In that case Tell me What school in the State of Georgia dosent do that.City kids play for County schools,County kids play for City schools…In Calhouns case,I was a County kid that went to Calhoun, because their wasnt a Gordon Central or Sonnorville.

Observer, you are right on. My frustration is not aimed toward the private or city schools, their kids or their parents. It is directed toward the GHSA that allows it.

The best example I can think of is the former pro basketball players kids. A couple years back the daughter goes to Buford and the son goes to GAC. How is that right for the kids in say Charlton, Lincoln, or Union County with no “come from where ever you want to rule as long as you, or someone, can pay a fee, and be eligible? How is that right for those public school kids??

@a person SMART: That’s it….just the kicker. It always amuses me how teams can win state championships, yet their players don’t get D-1 offers. Marist comes to mind….I’m assuming that Marist and Calhouon have similar demographics so Rivals, etc. don’t rank their players very high.

Old School………….why should Kids who have parents with the means to afford a BETTER education than the liberal government failing schools to have to go to a crappy school? Private schools should be able to recruit and offer scholarships, but not TAX PAYER funded crappy Government Schools.

Congratulation to Tucker & Calhoun. Both Lovejoy & Buford had great seasons. Hats off to Tucker coach Franklin Stephens, who continues to do as well as any coach in the state of Georgia. I had an opportunity to see the Tucker team literally lying on the mat against our Eagles from Northside at McConnell-Talbert Stadium. They did not quit. Tucker is a well-deserved champion.

Smart enough to know, I wish every parent could send their kids to the school of their choice. It would then be a level playing field but now it is not. My argument makes me sound like a liberal but I’m very conservative and old-fashioned. I just don’t feel that other schools and kids should have to play against a different system.

High school years and athletic competition is important to a lot of people. It builds a life-time of memories. Poor kids have memories too! I just want the field to be level in that the rules are the same, NOT the talent or work ethic. Those attributes come from the inside of the communities , players and coaches. Then the best team that worked the hardest wins, not the ones that had the means you speak of.

Lastly, I’d feel the same if I lived near a private or public school and my child could attend one. I’m not saying I wouldn’t take advantage of the chance for my child, but I’d realize that I just happened to be on the side that gained from a flawed system.

@GT Vet: Yep, I can’t believe a squad of players can win a state championship and their best players are ranked “two stars” by Rivals. I guess that’s why a bunch of “two stars” came to the Georgia Dome on September 3rd and beat a bunch of “four and five stars”…….

IM still here, but as stated before,I think your wrong for the most part.Theres not a County in Georgia that dosent have at least 2 High Schools in it that dosent do the same thing as Calhoun.County kids play in city schools ,City kids in the County schools. It may not be right, but its legal.Either way,I do agree with some of what you say,but its time for Chili dogs an to get ready for the BIG game of the Year around this house…..GO NAVY BEAT ARMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..Take care Old School, enjoy your Holidays and God Bless…..

Given the stage last night and all the talk about how ‘pumped up’ the community and school were for this game…..where were all these people??? Either their fans came disguised as empty seats, or you guys failed to support the accomplishments of their football team. Tucker seemed to be there in numbers cheering for their Tigers!

just sayin…………the Dome seats 85K. how many people did you want to be at the games? 1st game was at 4:30 on a Friday in Downtown Atlanta. Some people work still and getting to the game after work was not easy.
First game today is the smallest classification so how many people do you expect to be there?

Old School;I agree with most of your take on things. The bottom line is that there will never be equality on the playing field(or in the classroom for that matter).Counties that have 1 high school and no city school will always be at a disadvantage. As far as allowing attendance between the 2 I say that should be left up to the local school boards. We must also remember that these transfers arent made just for athletics.I know a career teacher at a county school who chose to send her son to the city school because of the greater facitities afforded him there. He played no sports and finished #2 in his graduating class-reminds us that some of the rules in place are for benfits other than extracirrular activities.

CONGRATS to the Tucker team, coaches, parents, boosters, teachers , bloggers, the whole nine yards. Very impressive head coach and very discipline kids. This school doesn’t get quite the hype as some of the other metro schools but two football championships and a basketball championship within the last five years, not bad. Y’all should be proud!!

Congratulations Tucker on a great championship season!

@TomDawg: In response to “I know everybody wants to win every game, but. How can any Buford fan, coach or player act that classless because they didn’t win their fifth state championship. Players crying on the sidelines, towels coverig their face like they’re ashamed about losing. Give me a break. A BUNCH OF SPOILED BRATS! Don’t worry mommy and daddy will buy you trophy. And please, i don’t want to hear “They are only kids. leave em alone”. They”re 18 year old men. That’s the ones i’m talking about.”

Just because the kids are crying after they lose the state championship doesn’t make them spoiled brats. If they were the first class to lose state in 5 years, that can be something that you might be shameful about. You feel like you haven’t lived up to the expectations of the program and its community.

For me, it was with the One-Act play contest at Northside. My brother won state at Northside, my cousin won state at Perry. We finished 3rd, 2nd, and 2nd. After I graduated, they won four state contest’s in a row. At that point of the winner being announced, you do feel as though you have let people down.

Heck, even professional athletes cry when they lose the Super Bowl, the World Series, or The Finals. Give the kids a break, dude!

@ GT VET:

The peeps who post on here are a VERY small sampling of the population. Most Buford fans – and our team – ALWAYS spoke highly of Calhoun. It is greatly unfortunate that you have such a jaded negative attitude towards our community and schools. Hopefully all the nice Calhoun folks I met last night are more representative of their hometown than some on this mb. They were very gracious in the victory.

Buford’s a good football team. Except for the 4 battles with Calhoun the last 4 years, they have run over the competition in AA like they were POP WARNER teams. Now they move up to AAA, and get to play most of the same teams as they also move up. Most want to see how Buford plays against better competition by moving up in class, but Buford wants to stay where they know they could dominate, and by doing so, not showing there true strength in the state. So yes most are glad they lost last night. Congrats to both teams.

Observer, I know facilities, academics, even coaches and teachers will never be equal. I’m not advocating equality or a type of parity. I just don’t think adults, or an organization run by adults such as the GHSA, should allow certain schools with different enrollment procedures the chance to compete against schools without those same procedures.

A kid that lives in Dawsonville, for example, could travel to Buford or Lovett and legally play. But a kid who lives anywhere else outside of Dawson County can’t travel into Dawsonville and play legally.

No way that is right. Its ruining kids opportunities to experience the playoffs in A and AA in every sport. Go to the GHSA site and click on past champions and look at the trend.

Yeah they win but if a coach can’t win at a private or city school, then thats a sorry coach or sorry recruiters. Either way they need to be replaced!

Lastly, and I’m not sure of the real whys to this statement but I kind of admire Marist. At least they always have played up.

@Old School: You are absolutely correct in your observation. I think one of the problems, is that Buford makes the GHSA look good on a national level. Each state hold their heads up high with each team that cracks the 100. Buford might look like a powerhouse on paper around the country, but if they knew the patsies they are beating up on it would be a different story. The GHSA sets the rules, but seem to have no clue of what’s going on. Happens in football and it happens in basketball. One good example: A high school loses 4 D1 players to graduation. They do have to other kids from lasts years roster that could step up, but I guess it wasn’t enough and out of the sky they have two D1 senior prospect that just so happen to transfer in. Fishy if you ask me. GHSA says their hands are tied, it was legal. GHSA, should split the privates from the public schools. NYC has 8 classifications, everything from private, public, catholic classifications. It’s like a national recruiting university like Georgia getting high calibre players playing against Shorter College, where almost all the students are local.
