GPB providing full coverage of football state finals

By I.J. Rosenberg

Score Atlanta

GPB Sports is taking a major step forward this year in its approach to televising the GHSA State Football Championships. The sports network that has broadcasted 19 live high school football games this season into more than one million households and 14 additional games on the web that have been seen by 145,000 unique visitors on the web has partnered with Turner Sports Productions to produce the two-day event which will be televised live on Georgia Public Broadcasting and video streamed live on GPB.org/football.

Beginning Dec. 9 at 4:30 p.m., GPB Sports will stay live at the Georgia Dome until the last championship trophy has been presented. The coverage will also include shows from the Dome between games and live championship trophy presentations. The coverage will include the addition of a motorized camera cart on the sidelines, a 20-foot boom camera and a wireless camera to be taken into the crowd at the Dome.

The shows will be anchored by Mark Harmon of GPB Sports Central and will include the entire Sports Central team of Gil Tyree, Niki Noto, Lindsey Thiry, Jon Nelson, Jackie Brittain, Trey McDaniel and former state championship coach Dave Hunter.

A group of high school experts will join the GPB Sports Team, including Tommy Palmer, the host of the Georgia High School Scoreboard Show, former Roswell state championship winner and current Blessed Trinity coach Tim McFarland, Score Atlanta’s Bob Houghton and Fletcher Proctor, recruiting expert Chad Simmons as well as college football and Hawks basketball voice Bob Rathbun and WSB-TV’s Zach Klein.

-Friday’s Class AA game between Buford and Calhoun at 4:30: Rathbun, Nelson and McFarland

-Friday’s Class AAAA games between Lovejoy and Tucker at 8: Tyree, McDaniel and Hunter

-Saturday’s Class A game between Savannah Christian and Landmark Christian at 1: Palmer, Houghton and Proctor

-Saturday’s Class AAA game between Peach County and Burke County at 4:30: Klein, Nelson and McFarland

-Saturday’s Class AAAAA game between Grayson and Walton at 8; Tyree, McDaniel and Hunter

Noto and Thiry will handle the sidelines for all games, while Harmon and Brittain will be on the set.

All games will be broadcasted live throughout the state of Georgia and into parts of Florida, Alabama and Tennessee on Georgia Public Broadcasting and webcasted live at GPB.org/sports. GPB has nine television stations across Georgia and is in more than 98 percent of the homes in the state. GPB is the country’s third-largest PBS station in the country based on population reach No. 2-rated public broadcasting station. Two years ago, it was ranked No. 15.

Complete coverage of the championships will be available live and On Demand at GPB.org/sports. Score Atlanta will provide blogging and an interactive live chat during the games on GPB.org/sports. GHSA.tv will also have the games available for On Demand viewing and DVD orders. The games will be rebroadcasted on GPB Knowledge, one of GPB’s digital channels, from Dec. 12-16. Each night will feature a game at 8 p.m., with the Class A game on Monday, Dec. 12, followed by the Class AA game on Tuesday, Class AAA on Wednesday, Class AAAA on Thursday and Class AAAAA on Friday. Can we have Rathbun and Klein on the Grayson-Walton game?? When I replay after on my DVR I don’t want to have to listen to Tyree and Hunter (former brookwood coach that hates all gwinnett schools except brookwood) stumble through the game like they did on Grayson’s semi-final game with Colquitt.

GraysonFAN – just turn the volume all the way off and watch the Walton points roll up on the board. By the time the game is done you won’t want to watch it anyway.

@FridayNight — that’s a good one I don’t think there will be a lot of points scored by Walton. It will be a good game but Grayson will score more than Walton. T. Jones is the best running back we have seen since we saw Greg Reid from Lowndes. He only had one big play then. I think Jones is in that category as an explosive player but Grayson’s D is REALLY GOOD against the run. Coach Andrews, Grayson Def. Coord., will have a game plan to limit Jones from the big play.

Yo GraysonFan – they are both deserving of being in the championship but ya did give up 31 last week!!! Walton does come into the game as the underdog but I’ve watched T Jones all year round and he’s the TRUTH – You still have to kick off and punt so I hope your special teams can bring it too. Have you seen a 96 yeard kickoff return and a 67 yard punt return? I have – and T Jones has done it so many times this season it’s bound to make Coach Andrews head hurt. (you’re not really going to kick in bounds are you??) Walton on has given up an average of 10.4 points per game – mmmmm – BTW – The QB has thrown 18 TDs in a run first offense

GraysonFAN: I agree 100% on Gil Tyree and Dave Hunter. It’s pathetic. You would think maybe they would get better as the season has gone along but they haven’t. It’s a shame. There’s a lot of guys out there who would love to do the games and would do a much better job. I hope FridayNightFan is right but I don’t see points being easy to come by for either team.

Please get rid of Dave Hunter. He is the absolute worst I have ever heard. One night it was 3rd and 23 and his brilliant comment was, “they need to get this first down.” WOW!!!!

If they can’t get the kickoffs in the end zone it’s OVA – don’t punt out of the filed of play? OVA. Look at the stats son – 10.4 allowed, almost 40 per game offense, and don’t worry bout the 16 leaving this year – Worry about the 16 coming this year!

Need a couple of fixes: first graph, second sentence should read “has broadcast.” Last graph, fourth sentence should read “will be rebroadcast.” Oh, and end of third graph should read “state championship coach Dave Hunter, fine fellow.”

@Moving Van…if that’s the best you can come up with ….GET OFF THE BLOG…Tyren Jones transfer is last year’s news since he has been at Walton since LAST SPRING….and don’t worry about next year: Tyren Jones (RB), JR, Parker McCleod (QB), JR, Brandon Kublanow (OL/DL), JR, DJ Smith (WR/CB), SO ….alll D1 prospects along with many others that will be back…..look at Walton’s teams from 6th grade thru Varsity and you will see a PROGRAM not a flash in the pan team!

The rental business is good in the Walton District. Walton middle school teams stink. Wheeler used to smash them until you (and Lassiter) stole all the good players. Can’t beat em, recruit em. yall can’t develope players so you recruit them. Your still scrubs. I hope Grayson blast you.

Coach Dave Hunter has done more for many communities than many realize, your coaches call him all the time for input. He is very good at building programs, and helping rebuild your financial infrastructures. Money you need to run a football program.Ask your head coach before you cut him to deep. Good man and very interested in your kids.

Lot of hating in this thread. Big UP to Gil Tyree and Coach Hunter. Perhaps they’re not Pat Summerall and John Madden but I enjoy their excitement and knowledge of the game.

In terms of the teams/players, it should be a great game. The top defensive player in the state against the best offensive player in the state…..and they are both Juniors.

Bought my ticket last night…….Can’t wait to be in the Dome on Saturday.

@CoffeeC — this article isn’t about the game it was about the TV coverage. You have no room to talk Coffee won only 1 big game all year and then went one and done in the playoffs. Go to other posts and there is a lot more talk about the game. Have fun tomorrow night watching Grayson and Walton play for the Championship. Too bad you won’t make the playoffs from here on out now that you have to play Camden every year. Maybe you can hold them to under 45 pts and no running clock in the 4th qtr.

@Wheeler Runaways: are you effing kidding me???? Do you want me to bring up basketball? I didn’t think so. IDIOT!!!!!!!!!! When you swallow that bitter pill, it’s best to take it with a drink of water.

@JIMB: it’s great that Dave Hunter has done so much for Georgia High School Football. He should keep doing all of the stuff he’s doing EXCEPT announcing games. Thank you Coach for all you’ve done and for all the things you continue to do.[

@BamaBornDukie: I appreciate the coverage this season from GPB and WSB and so on but it seems that they do very little homework prior to the broadcasts. Zach Klein (who I thought was pretty good actually) called Parker McLeod ‘Parker McLoyd’ all night. I’m sure he does a fine job on the news(I never really watch local news so I wouldn’t really know) but I can barely understand Gil Tyree half the time and it takes him an eternity to tell you who the ball carrier was sometimes. When he gets excited about a scoring play….if you can understand what he’s saying then I welcome any translation you can give me. Thank you in advance. Dave Hunter=does not need to be doing color. Michael Carvell…..same thing. I appreciate all the work he does for the ajc on recruiting, etc. but STICK TO WHAT YOU’RE GOOD AT. The crazy thing thing is: it’s none of their faults! It’s whoever made the decisions at GPB and at WSB. There are lots of guys out there who cover high school football that know the players, coaches, etc. that would love an opportunity to do the games and would do a great job.

The good news for me is that I’ll be watching Walton-Grayson from inside the dome and won’t have to worry about the announcers.

Let’s hope the GHSA and Dome folks open up the club level of the Dome for those of us who wish not to have to stand up to see the games. Congrats to all teams that have made it to the finals. You deserve to be able to stand up and cheer for your team the entire game if you wish. But the rest of us prefer to sit and have a good sight line for the games for our $20 entry fee. Good luck to all!!!

I have to agree Coach Hunter has done so much for high school football in the state of Georgia. There has been nobody else that has promoted high school football and made it better. He is the man behind the Corky Kell that starts the season and is a great day of football. I just think GPB could get better announcers. Matt Stewart, Chuck Oliver, Brian Jordan all did a great job when CSS was televising the games.

Yo Wheeler Runaways – playas aren’t recruited by Walton – they chose to come to Walton for many reasons. How bout Walton being named the 67th best HS in the country by Newsweek? The academics, the social environment, the overall experience. Wheeler is a fine school and it’s basketball program is legendary, but at the end of the day Walton, Lassiter, and Pope can stand on their own merit and academic accomplishments. What sport did you letter in? Which college did you attend? Easy to mouth off about Walton but at the end of the day you, your school administration, and your kids are responsible for your own success. Stop being a hater and look inn the mirror and discover what you can do to make Wheeler better.

I’m just happy a Cobb team has FINALLY gotten to the finals. Cobb football has made poor showings year after year in the state tournament, and really hasn’t earned much respect from anyone. South Georgia schools led the way to show how programs must be run (coordination with middle school programs, off-season conditioning and workouts, top-notch facilities, and yes – even possibly recruiting) in order to compete at the highest level. Gwinnett schools began to rise to the same level of competition as South Georgia in the 90s, and now it appears some Cobb schools are catching up. Hopefully, there will now be good competition and rivalry between north and south (including both Gwinnett and Cobb in the north) for years to come. And when will see the level of play rise to the state level in Cherokee County?

Tyren left Lassiter because they are a pss oriented team behind Printz, he wanted touches and it shows now why, the 10th best back inthe nation and next year he will be a top 3 back in the nation, and Walton recruiting players, C’mon Man, Wheeler recruits basketball players, did you forget that, lol,,,Walton will beat Grayson and i will see if they make a rap song about that,,,,,,Big props to Dj Smith, the only sophomore starting on Walton period and holding his on,, gave up one TD all season and that was to Printz and Dickey, both major D1 recruits, watch for him at Walton

If u don’t want to listen to the commentators then go to the game and shut up about it already.

@fridaynightlights….waltons region is not anywhere near Grayson in every category. Grayson gave up 31 points to a colquitt team that would kill Walton.

Don’t forget history all you Walton hot shots….2007 semi finals Walton was supposedly some great team with a great running back and stifling defense and NG embarrassed your little raiders something like 35-10. Cobb county can’t hang with the elite teams of gwinnett. Grayson is too physical and Walton hasn’t been hit in the mouth half as hard as what will happen tomorrow night.

Hey NGHS 09 ‘elite teams’ of Gwinnett? You sound like a researcher on the Fox News Network. Let’s review the facts: Cobb County won 3 out of 4 games vs. Gwinette County in the 2011 Korky Kell Classic. mmmmmm Grayson beat Kell 7/0 – Kell a team that finished for the season 9/3. mmmmm Gwinnette County has won just 4 out of the last 10 AAAAA state chanpionships. mmmmmm neither Grayson nor Walton has won a state championship so I’m thinking you need to get out more, work with facts, and enjoy the game. Sure is Grayson is very physical but here’s your problem…. You’ll give up 14 points on special teams, not stop the run, and at the end of the day realize that ya played better in the win last week – oh yea that’s right you gave up 31 points in that one. Walton 28 Grayson 10 – bahh bye

I hope those announcers work for free. No way I’m paying them for the ineptitude they show just trying to do play by play. Tyree is terrible and Hunter cannot go 5 minutes without commenting how much the good teams remind him of Brookwood. Way too much of a homer to be neutral, AND HIS TEAM ISN”T EVEN ON THE FIELD!

I am middle aged fan and remember as a kid when the pregame hype for football games was only an hour even before the Super Bowl. There were no sideline reporters during games, and the music was only the marching bands at halftime. The players didn’t trash talk or celebrate after every play like it was the last one. Go to youtube, and watch the full NBC telecast of Super Bowl III to see what I mean. It was so nice!! Some years back, a network even showed us a NFL game with NO COMMENTATORS, JUST SILENCE!! It was the best telecast of football ever, bar none.

The reason I like to watch these HS Champoinship games is they have been pretty limited in these items I mentioned. But, Public TV wants to make it so much like today’s average NFL or college game, over hyped and with too much talking. IMHO, these things will take away from the experience of JUST FOOTBALL AND THE KIDS!!

I think its great that GPB puts the games on and i do admire Dave Hunter and all that he has contibuted but i have to agree the broadcasters need a few lessons. The three of them all talk at the same time.

Colquitt has been unique the past two seasons as far as runing a type of offense that puts points up against Grayson, I think Walton and Grayson both being much more run oriented the score will be lower than the Colquitt game.

I’m sure Grayson’s coaches are aware of how dangerous Walton’s return game can be and who NOT to kick it to. As for stopping the run the Rams have a pretty good history of doing that. Walton is probably the best team Grayson will face and the rams will need to play their best game of the year to win it, but they are very capable. PRidge and Dacula are good teams but this season i think the Rams will give you a little tougher challenge.

Yo grayram – one thing is for sure: the two best teams will be playing Saturday in the dome. It’s truly exciting that neither Walton nor Grayson has ever won a football state championship, and I’m betting the kids won’t dissapoint. Love the camo idea – Walton bringing blue touhdown towels.

Went off a bit on NGHS 09 but no dis to the Rams. Honestly which is harder to do? Run on the best run defense in the state, or stop the best runner in GA. T Jones is one of the nicest and most humble kids you would ever meet and it’s a shame someone will win, and one will lose. Best of luck tomorrow and let’s get ready for what I think may be the most memorable game in years.
