Walton defeated Lassiter 34-10 in a regular-season meeting between the two teams (AJC)
Lassiter (10-3) plays at Walton (13-0) in the “Cobb County Super Bowl” in the Class AAAAA semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
The playoff game will be broadcast live on WSB-TV’s digital channel 2.2, several cable systems (Comcast channel 248 and Charter channel 126) and on www.wsbtv.com.
The winner will be Cobb County’s first representative in the state championship game since the 2000 season. No Cobb school has won a state title since 1967.
“I’ve been in Cobb County for 15 years, and every year the football in Cobb has gotten a lot better,” Walton coach Rocky Hidalgo said. “There are good coaches in Cobb County, and people are running programs the right way where they can compete on a state level.
“But I will say this about our program: We’re playing in the state semifinals for the third time since 2003. You’ve got your teams like Camden County, Lowndes, Brookwood and Parkview and a few others, but not too many have done that in Class AAAAA in the last eight years. We’ve been good for the last decade and we’re not going away.”
“We’ve been here before, and we expect to come back. This is how we built our football program. We want to compete at the state level every year, and we felt like we’ve done that over the last 8-9 years.”
The two teams played in the regular season, with Walton posting a convincing 34-10 win over Lassiter.
“Lassiter has a really good team, and we have a really good team,” Hidalgo said. “When we played them the first time, they fought us tooth and nail and then we kind of got downhill on them a little bit. I don’t think this game is going to be like that. I think this game is going to go down to the last minute. I think those kids at Lassiter play really hard, and they have a lot of talented players.”
The two schools are archrivals, and would be pumped up to play each other even if the game didn’t have such high stakes. Lassiter is in the state semifinals for the first time in school history. Until 2008, Lassiter had never won a playoff game.
“If we were playing Walton in tiddlywinks, the kids would be focused,” Lassiter coach Jep Irwin said. “We didn’t even need to talk about what’s next. I don’t think we mentioned to the kids that it’s a semifinals game or showed them a bracket. All they know is that it’s Walton. We really don’t have to say anything else, and I’m sure the Walton coaches don’t have to say anything else to their kids either.”
Class AAAAA
Colquitt* County (11-2) vs. Grayson High School (13-0) Lassiter High School (10-3) vs. Walton High School (13-0) will air on WSB-TV’s Me-TV channel 2.2 and on GHSA.tv

Hidalgo may be technically accurate in comparing his teams to Brookwood, Parkview, Lowndes and Camden. But those programs have all advanced to the state title game and brought home championships. They’ve built a strong program over at Walton. But they’re not at the top of the mountain yet…….

This Friday night the Trojans return to Raider Valley and amid all the crys of bad calls, missing players, ets, etc, etc, will leave with all the respect that has never been acknowledged over the last 25 years! Walton is going to send Lassiter, then Colquitt County into girls’ basketball season. This RB at Walton is “beyond nasty.” We are lucky to have an opportunity to see a talent like this. You better believe that this is no metro Atlanta elusion of greatest. This kid is serious. He is going to run wild vs. Lassiter. You heard it from me.

@ Plowboy-Vikings: There are some serious challenges with watching a high school football game between Walton & Dacula when my alma mater is actually making an example of another metro Atlanta program that was feeling really good about themselves. Man, that Tri-Cities team was HUGE. Of course, after the hitting began the “false swagger” disappeared…as it always does at McConnell-Talbert Stadium.
I will certainly take your word for it. I know you guys (though jaded by South Georgia football “false hype”) know football. It is not girls’ basketball season at Northside. Therefore, my focus was on the Eagles at McConnell-Talbert.
By the way, we improved to 84-2 at home versus all visiting team at the MAC since 2000. These Tucker folks are talking as if we have not hosted the likes of Lowndes, Peachtree Ridge, Booker T. Washington (Miami), Valdosta, Colquitt County, Thomas County Central and other top flight programs. They are going to learn on Friday night.
As for Walton, I learned a few years ago when Lowndes had Greg Reid. Top tier talent can trump many things. I’ll take Walton. You can not coach talent. One would expect a Walton team to have a little discipline. However, I have not seen them live or on television. I just see the crazy stats the RB puts up.
Really?

Also, does anyone have pictures of the JJ Green interception vs Colquitt? Sure would like to to see what happened there. I as at the game, and ” still can’t believe what I just saw “. I felt Camden was in control of the game, not total control, but in control. Always up by seven and threatning to go up by 14, but never did. A gutwrenching loss of epic proportions. If I was Lassiter I wood get the Cherokee vs Walton tape cause they shut Tyron Jones down made them pass the ball we held him to one TD and under 100 yards and nobody did that all year and that’s that
BamaBornDukie
November 30th, 2011
10:03 pm
@Bleed red……Tyren Jones got just over 100 yards against Cherokee as he had 104 yards and 1 TD. The only games he was held below 100 were the Milton game in the Regular Season he had 85 yards (but he ran for over 100 yards in the 1st quarter when they played again in the Playoffs) and the Woodstock game he had 81 yards but only had 4 carries including a 74 yard TD run.
Lassiter did a good job containing him back in the Regular Season as they had 8-9 guys in the Box to stop him although he did have about an 80 yard kickoff return. If Lassiter stacks the box again with 8-9 guys to stop Jones…..”PlayAction” Pass could be trouble for Lassiter’s defense.
Lassiter’s best chance though is stop Walton’s running game and force the QB to beat them in the passing game because if they play “standard” base defense….Jones will run for over 200 yards and 3-4 TDs….

New ballgame no doubt in the playoffs…..But I’d give more credence to “Head-Head” Games versus trying to apply the Transitive Property of Inequalities (ie. A>B, B>C……so I “THINK” A>C)………..to sports.
Walton has beaten the teams they’ve faced. They “struggled” to some extent against Dacula but most teams have a close game at some point during the season en route to a Championship. Grayson struggled with Kell and Brookwood earlier in the season and Colquitt lost to a AAAA team early on.
With that said…Lassiter is playing better and it should be a good ballgame.

Jim Hogue broke his tibia or his ankle back against Wheeler on October 28th. There was talk that he may perhaps be back by the Semifinals or Finals if Walton advanced that far. Each week he seems to be progressing on the sideline…..I’m not sure if he was in a wheelchair at first….but I know he was on crutches and had a cast or brace for a while and last week I think he had on shoes and he was definitely walking……So I guess it’s “possible” but I wouldn’t count on him playing this week.

BamaBornDukie, it was actually a helmet to the ankle in the game against Marietta that the Raiders lost an integral part of the team. Played on both sides of the ball, team captain, heart and soul. Great kid and a real bummer he was injured. Ironically, it was in the game that Marietta was screaming about #51 and the debatable late hit. Jennings came back, Jim has not. No one from Marietta ever even inquired about him.
Reading some of these immature comments by Lassiter ‘fans’ would be humorous if it weren’t so pathetic. Can’t they just post valid stuff instead of resort to name-calling? How embarrassing. It’s going to be a very exciting night.

That stinks to lose Hogue, he is a good player and I assume he would have been the featured running back if Tyren Jones didn’t come over. Jep and his coaches have done an awesome job of coaching the guys up for the playoffs, and we are playing our best ball at the right time. I think their is a lot of mutual respect from both teams. Does Raider Valley really have 6,000 permanent seats? I kept hearing about minimum seating requirements, and pulled up the following from GHSA’s web page:
C. In order to host a playoff game beyond the third round, a school must meet the following site requirements:
1. Permanent seating requirements:
(a) One seat equals 24 inches in width. Exception: each theatre style seat (with back and arm rests) will count
as one seat regardless of the width of the seat.
(b) All seats must be at least 15 feet from playing field.
(c) Total seating capacity for each class is as follows:
Class A 2,000 seats
Class AA 2,500 seats
Class AAA 3,000 seats
Class AAAA 4,000 seats
Class AAAAA 6,000 seats
Did GHSA ever try to get the game moved to a larger stadium?

East Cobb Dad, I would hope that you are kidding when you’re asking if Walton can accommodate the crowd that is sure to be there Friday night. Walton has been laying the groundwork for this long before the day before the game. Don’t you think they’re smart enough to prepare for the strict guidelines set by the GHSA? The GHSA controls every aspect of this event. Walton has to pay to bring in temporary seating but it’s certainly worth the expense. There were over 7,000 people at the game in September. Weather forecast is great so it’ll be a fun night of high school football.

@wheeler1973, yes we saw your “handi-work” on the Walton field, good job destroying public property and spelling Wheeler wrong, vandalism is always acceptable, right? I believe Walton also won that night, hmmmm
Great idea Fred – Will get the kids at Walton to talk up the idea of Toys for Tots, they are usually doing Breast Cancer fundraising but this close to the holidays that is a terrific idea.
The kids at Walton are like the kids at any other school, they are a diverse group. Some families have more, some have less but they all share great school spirit. This isn’t Beverly Hills and there is little/no difference between Lassiter and Walton for median income purposes.
The poster who posted something nasty about Lassiter girl had the post removed, it was not a Walton post, nor did they claim to be one, just some crude individual.
Raider Valley has permanent seating for about 7,000 and the fans will be as welcoming as always. Walton sold out of their ticket allotment the first day.
As far as Walton not playing anyone, I believe that they have had a similar schedule to Lassiter up until the playoff’s. Agreed that Lassiter has been having a great playoff, but Walton has as well even overcoming the down-right awful ref’s last week against Dacula. When the GPTV broadcasters comment on the ref’s you kind of know something is off.
The team is made of many fine players not just one or two, it takes a team to enable the others to perform at their best, Tyren wouldn’t be as successful if his O line didn’t do their job, Zack plays well because the D line is doing their job.
Proud to be a Walton Raider fan. Good Luck to the Walton team!

I am hoping for a good, clean game tomorrow. Having graduated from lassiter, I hope they win. I expect the game to be much closer than the first meeting where Lassiter racked up the penalties in the 2nd half. I have said sicne the beginning of the season that if Lassiter doesn’t beat themselves with penalties (same with Walton), that both teams would go very far. Unfortunately Lassiter hurt themselves in 2 other region games or else these 2 would be on oppiste sides of the bracket. No matter the outcome tomorrow night, both teams will be very strong again next year as long as they have some of the underclassmen step up and fill holes.
However, you have to wonder if all these Walton/Lassiter posters are really from their respective schools or are just people talking smack to talk smack and rile people up. I mean, it is like looking in a mirror when it comes to academics/athletics/fine arts/etc. Just be happy 2 neighboring schools are in the semis and give Cobb a chance to bring the state title here.

Still had some left so Walton took 150 of them and brought them to their lunch room to sell. They were gone within 30 minutes. Bottom line is that it’s going to be high school football, at its best. Here’s to a fun and safe game with no injuries and very few penalties.

Sorry if I offended anyone with my posts. I didn’t mean to cause any harm. It should be a good game tomorrow night, and, as always, I’ll be cheering for my school, the Trojans!

lasts meetings score of 34-10 doesn’t do justice to how close of a game the last meeting between these two teams was. There is no doubt that if lassiter didn’t loose their composure, we would be reading a completely reversed story. Facts from the last meeting of these teams: Lasssiter gave up a pick sic on a pass that should have been caught, we fumbled on our own 29, we missed a fg, we allowed an 88 yrd kick return, we had 6 personal fouls penalties ( four of which were called on players who no longer are on the team), and we gave walton 7 first downs on penalties (a couple on 3rd and long). This is a much more disciplined Lassiter team with a greatly improved defense. Don’t be surprised if tyren jones is held in check. Lassiter is used to playing against tyren, seeing as he was a Trojan for 2 years. The trojans wont be going in to the game “hoping” to win, they will go into it “expecting” to win. DOME2DOME WE WILL NOT BE DENIED. TROJAN NATION!!!

@Disgusting – Regarding the seating, temporary stands are acceptable if they are of near permanent quality. In other words, you can’t put 2×6s on concrete blocks but there are temporary stands that can be erected similar to scaffolding that are acceptable.

Well my son plays QB and they nocked him out on an unsportsmanlike play and before that play They tried every down they play really hard and and a little dirty but the referees let them get away with it so you have to play the same way or go home .

@ trojannation:
There are multiple players off the team since the start of the season? I was only aware of 1, on the o-line. I knew they got very young the 2nd half of the year on the line, but hadn’t noticed any other changes. Hopefully no stupid personal fouls tomorrow, by either team. Need a fairly clean game, not a bunch of “what ifs” from either side.

Is anyone surprised that Lassiter will probably win state? If you followed the summer 7on7 leagues in ga. and ala., Lasstter either won it or was real close everytime.

I have been to all the Walton home games and I will tell you that the best part of our team is our Defense! Tyren is awesome but our “D” makes the opponent quit. Last week the ref’s were horrible and we still won. Raiders win a tough one with big plays from the “D”!!!

@ Bleed Red: Cherokee’s game plan worked to contain Tyren Jones, I guess, but Walton won 38-3.
@ Trojan Man: no question Lassiter’s playoff opponents have been much tougher than Walton’s but that’s what happens when you’re the #4 seed. Walton beat Lassiter head to head 34-10, not 14-10, but 34-10!
That being said, I do not expect this to be an easy game for either team. I have been talking up Lassiter’s D all season. The Trojans are 100% legit and it’s a shame that the 2 teams aren’t on opposite sides of the bracket because this would make a great championship game.

Tyren will be motivated against his old team, and the LHS defense will be motivated to stop him. Should be a great game!! Lets hope for some hard-hitting and clean football.
GO TROJANS!!

Why don’t you have the Marietta 1967 Blue Devil team attend the state game, and introduce those teams members before the State Championship game. Or, have them line the field as te Cobb team enters the game. As inspiration for the Cobb team to WIN!

The Cobb schools don’t cheat on the whole, which is why they aren’t on the level of some of the other schools such as Parkview, Brookwood, Lowndes, etc.
When 10% of your team doesn’t live in your school’s district prior to their freshman year and moved in, and another 10% STILL don’t live in your district .. you should be expected to win. High school recruiting at it’s best.

GO TROJANS!!! Good luck to both schools tonight and represent Cobb well in the finals!!
We reside in Lassiter’s school district, but I love any team named “Raiders”! Got to be a “zoo” down at Walton right now, so let’s see how many games are watchable from home?
Be safe y’all!! GO LHS!!!!!
