Lassiter, Landmark beat the odds by reaching semifinals

Lassiter and Landmark Christian beat the odds and made the semifinals as No. 4 seeds. Both have won three consecutive road games to reach the GHSA semifinals for the first time.

That’s the second straight season that as many as two No. 4 seeds have made the semis, but only the third time it has happened since 1996, when the GHSA first allowed third- and fourth-place teams in the state playoffs.

The No. 4 seeds are 3-7 all-time in the semis. The No. 3 seeds are 6-19.

Here is a look at all 37 teams that have made the semifinals as No. 3 or No. 4 seeds. The seeds for each team are noted at the left, and the result of their semifinal game is on the right.

Got an email saying that Marist made the 1980 c’ship game as a #4 seed. Before 1996, you had region playoffs, and there might be a few more examples of teams coming into region playoffs at #4 and breaking through. Our list is just back to 1996, when everything in the post-season became the state playoffs.

It feels great to win a game, but to pull off upset wins against teams as good as Alpharetta, McEachern and MLK has been awesome. We’re starting to like those road whites…everybody loves an underdog, and we love our Trojans. Good luck Friday night against Walton, let’s make it back to The Dome!
