GHSA places state’s high schools in 6 classifications

After a one-week delay, the Georgia High School Association divided its 440 member schools into the new six-classification structure that will go into effect next year.

Sixty five schools, mostly from the metro area, will make up the GHSA’s first-ever Class AAAAAA group. The rest of the breakdown is 71 schools for AAAAA, 71 for AAAA, 70 for AAA, 66 for AA, and 97 (including 71 that play football) for A.

“The toughest part is yet to come, and that’s putting the schools into regions,” said Ralph Swearngin, the GHSA’s executive director. “Breaking down the numbers for the classifications was fairly easy.

“The [Reclassification Committee] did eyeball some situations. Whenever we divide classifications, we want to draw the lines where there is a little bit of a natural break between the FTE numbers. If you have an 8-10 student difference between placing a school in one classification or another, that’s better than dividing a line where there is only a difference of one student. But sometimes you have to do that.”

What’s next? Schools will have until Dec. 5 to decide whether or not to play up in a higher classification. The schools will be placed in regions on Dec. 6. After the appeals process, the new regions are expected to be finalized on Jan. 10.

The breakdown of schools, which was scheduled to be released last week, was approved on Monday after the GHSA’s Executive Committee rescinded a policy that allowed schools to drop certain special-needs students from their FTE or overall student enrollment.

“I think we’ll continue to look at that policy for a couple of years, but for right now it will not be a part of what we do with this reclassification,” Swearngin said.

Some metro schools had a mixed reaction to Monday’s division. For example, Morrow High School is the smallest school (1,431 students) in Class AAAAAA, which is led by Mill Creek with 2,766 students.  Morrow narrowly missed being placed in the next lowest class, AAAAA, which has its largest school as Allatoona with 1,426 students.

“We were 0-10 in football this past year in Class AAAA and now they’re going to have us skip all the way up to Class AAAAAA? For what purpose?” Morrow football coach J. Livingston said. “We’ll have to deal with it, though. We won’t back down from the competition, and we’ll do whatever we need to do to succeed.”

Marist, which was placed in Class AA with 591 students, has yet to decide whether it will appeal to play in a high classification. Rivals St. Pius, Woodward and Blessed Trinity are in Class AAA, while Tucker and Dunwoody are in Class AAAAA.

“Traditionally we do play up,” Marist athletics director Tommy Marshall said. “We’ll have a meeting with the coaches, and everybody will have a different opinion I’m sure. Then we’ll meet with the administration. I’m not sure what our plans will be right now.”

Here are the new classifications:

I suppose there will be “defending champ” for any class next year given that all the classes are really different than the prior year, but interesting to note that none of the schools remaining in 4A will be there next year: Of the 8 remaining schools, 2 are slated to join 6A (Lovejoy and Tri-Cities) and the remainder are slated to join 5A. Wonder where my War Eagles will end up. How’s this for a tough region: Tucker, ML King, Stephenson, Southwest DeKalb, Mays, Miller Grove, and Dunwoody — all in 5A.

I’m with you ‘WarEagle’ That will be a tough region. You better add Clarkston and Arabia Mountain to that mix since they are Dekalb school’s(travel expenses). I feel sorry for poor Clarkston. I do think that MLK and Stephenson will choose to play up to 6A. I also feel your ‘WarEagles’ will want to join the group, if for no other reason than ‘travel cost’s’. Just a thought……

Okay, GHSA, you’ve created your worst nightmare: Reg. 1 & Reg. 3AAAAAA ONLY have 4 teams in each region (according to this list). Therefore, each of them AUTOMATICALLY qualify for the playoffs. What’s your next step of action – having somebody play up or redraw the region lines (which, BTW, are a joke in my opinion with what you have now with different parts of the state claiming to be said region & varying amongst classifications).

This does, however, force you to take a look @ the Sav. schools a bit more since most of them are listed AAAA or lower.

Buford only moving to 3A- What a joke! Best HS Team with
$$ to burn… All private schools should have their own league
along with schools like Buford who might as well be private
as anyone in the county can go there if they pay a little….

Buford is STILL in the WRONG classification! They STILL have an unfair advantage over the schools they play against. That is why they are in the championship game year after year after year after year…..That is NOT fair to the kids…….!

too many classifications if u ask me. Tennessee has 8 classifications which is way too many. i’m from Ky. and we have 6 for football which is 2 too many. but we have only one champion in basketball which is the way to go. Classifications arent needed in basketball. thats why the SWEET 16 tournament is the best in the world.

to all the people commenting about who Buford pays off to remain in a lower class, you are so blind to how this process works. The classifications are based on school enrollment, that it all. The talent pool has no determination on where the school is placed.

Also, no regions have been determined yet. Regions will not be set until December 6th. So as of now there is no need to whine about only having 4 teams in a region because THERE ARE NO REGIONS!.

Also how are the projections calculated for instance I see Chapel Hill and Douglas County have projected numbers. Also single gendered schools have projected numbers.

Columbus-did you object when Shaw in Columbus was wiped out by transfers to Carver-Columbus several years ago?As for Bufords power-look at several big Dekalb Co. schools-they got the transfers and it still didnt do the trick(1 in particular).Regions are set by enrollment numbers of course and LEGAL transfers will have to be tolerated. But in my opinion multiple transfers are ruining the comunity concept of high school football.Sometimes a loss when you retain your idenity isnt that bad.

Typical GAC: hey, the enrollment numbers are for current 9th, 10th, and 11th graders only: since the seniors won’t be playing next year, you don’t count them. GAC may well have 700 in the Upper School, if you count seniors. GHSA doesn’t, and it never has during reclass. season.

I like many others here understand the classification process. Buford is placed in the class based on enrollments, however I as a former Buford person find the remarks and taunting from the writer “Buford Dominates 3A” to be both childish and distasteful… True winners in life understand that talk is both weak and futile! I simply hope our men know and understand that hard work is the medicine of any good football team regardless of classification… who among us doesn’t think that some lower championship teams throughout Georgia history couldn’t have beat championships teams from the largest class?

From my perspective this doesn’t change any thing, except we no have one more classification. Schools will play up and we will be just as we have been in the previous years. After schools decide to play up, then the classification will no longer be divided equally.

Personally, I am not a fan at all of the six classifications. I think it’s kind of “nit-picking”. Yes, perhaps those mega-schools with 2,500 students should be in their own class, but after that, it’s kind of splitting hairs… is it THAT big of a difference that, say, LaGrange has 1,100 students and Sequoyah has 1,200? Why are Lassiter and Sprayberry, neighborhood rivals in the 1980s, now not only in separate regions but separate CLASSES, because one has 1,500 students and one has 1,400? In other words, I don’t think 200-300 students makes that big of a difference in athletic classification. Yes, putting Woody Gap and Mill Creek together would make no sense because the gap is too large, but schools only about 100-200 students apart should be in the same class. That way, maybe we could stick with only 4 or 5 classificiations.

It’s complicated enough for the state to organize high school sports with five classes… having six wil be even harder. I think our entire state educational system needs to be examined, and we need to find out WHY in God’s name that there even ARE high schools with 2,600 or 2,700 students!!! Those learning environments are almost impossible (I know because I went to a school with 2,500 kids). Smaller schools can provide better instruction and care for students… when you get over 2,000, everybody is just a number.

Good luck to the GHSA… I wouldn’t want their job. But with any class restructure or region alignment, they have GOT to take travel into consideration… it’s unfair to have kids on the road for hours to go to games. If it means a 600 student school plays a 950 student school, so be it… but it’s better to have neighborhood rivalries and shorter commutes than to try to ensure that EVERYBODY plays opponents who are their EXACT same size. That’s an impossible task. Let’s just do the best we can.

Why are single gender schools doubled and private schools not multiplied at all?

While most are looking at the schools, I was looking to see if the GHSA did the right thing by not excluding students with disabilities from their overall count. I see they did not exclude the students. Hats off GHSA – you did the right thing. No need to ever discuss going back to a policy that makes a student count anything less than a student.

Anybody know what’s up with Lovett being listed with 452 while being sandwiched between schools with 578? That’s not an AJC typo, that’s exactly how they GHSA list shows them

re: “projected” — I believe several of those may be schools that are slated for rezoning & therefore the projections replace their current FTE’s (which would not be accurate after the lines are redrawn)

Wow, how lucky is Allatoona. They should have been a 5a school this year and now they just miss the cut to be in 6a. That AD over there sure was good at fudging the numbers just not so good at back dating paperwork.

Is there a website that has all the actual fte counts without the prjections.

Buford has some very nice football facilities. However, I am disappointed in the football field facilities. It seems to be underwhelming considering the type of football team Buford has. If Buford is the best in the state of Georgia, pack your bags and visit some of the best facilities in Texas. Then, you will know what they best have to offer. Stop bragging until you measure up to the new stadium that Allen High School in Allen, Texas will have beginning in 2012.

The truth is school size does not make as big of a difference as many think. May be the gap between 5A and 1 and 2A is too big, but plenty of the schools in 3 and 4A could play with the big schools in 5A, thus adding another classification does nothing. The big problem the GHSA refuses to address is illegal transfering and recruiting. Public schools should not allow someone outside the district to attend (especially if they are out of county). The known city and private schools that recruit should play atleast 2 classes above there level.

If we cracked down on the transfers and elimated the illegal recruits, I would be in favor of crowning only 1 or 2 champions for basketball. Maybe let 1A and 2A compete for 1 title and let 3,4, and 5A compete for a title.

There are a lot of schools with very small enrollments. 99% of them don’t use GHSA to sanction.
