AA blog: Buford keeps on rolling

The Buford football team took another step toward its fifth straight state championship by beating Jefferson County 31-0. It was the 25th straight victory for the Wolves, who advance to the quarterfinals for a game against No. 6 Elbert County.

Buford’s defense was at its best and limited Jefferson County to only 85 yards and held 1,000-yard rusher Dontavious Kitchens to 34 yards. It didn’t help that quarterback Lafayell Williams was ejected after picking up two personal fouls. And Jefferson County been playing well, the Warriors had won seven straight games and knocked off Region 2-AA champion Pierce County in the first round.

Jefferson County did little to slow the Wolves, who rushed for 312 yards. Nathan Staub carried six times for 134 yards and one touchdown and Dontravious Wilson ran seven times for 85 yards and two touchdowns. Andre Johnson scored Buford’s other touchdown.

In other first-round games:

Fitzgerald 46, Adairsville 14: Fitzgerald used big plays in the second quarter to take the momentum. The Purple Hurricanes stopped Adairsville at the 2-yard line and then scored on an 88-yard run. Later in the period Adairsville failed to convert a fake punt and Fitzgerald scored on the next play, a 48-yard pass, to take a 26-7 lead.

Lamar County 28, Blessed Trinity 14: Twin brothers Lance and Lawrence Austin each scored two touchdowns to lead Lamar County. Lance Austin ran for 162 yards and scored the go-ahead touchdown in the third period and the defense came up with two big plays in the fourth quarter. Lamar stopped Blessed Trinity on fourth-and-4 and used an interception by Brandon Higdon to stop another drive and set up the clinching TD run by Lawrence Austin.

Dublin 45, Westminster 21: Cedric O’Neal rushed for 246 yards and a touchdown for the Fighting Irish. Maurice Martin rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown and Donovan McCloud caught a touchdown pass from Rob East.

Appling County 26, North Oconee 13: C.J. Nails recovered a fumbled snap late in the fourth quarter to secure the win for Appling County and Byron Buxton scored the insurance touchdown in the final minutes on a 19-yard lateral. Buxton had earlier caught a 91-yard touchdown pass.

Calhoun 43, Brooks County 30: The Yellow Jackets forced three first-half turnovers and jumped to a 17-0 lead to take the steam out of Brooks County. Tyler Lamb threw for 235 yards and three touchdowns for Calhoun and Alex Urbano rushed for 88 yards and one touchdown.

Elbert County 28, Cook 7: The No. 6 Blue Devils bounced the lone No. 4 seed that survived the first round.

Carver Columbus 35, Laney 12: The No. 4 Tigers won their 10th straight game and reached the quarterfinals for the sixth straight season.

Calhoun ran it to 36-0 in the 3rd before letting the future starters get playoff experience, why Brooks left their #1’s is how you waste the opportunity to build next year’s program (especially when the other team does). If you can’t get the best players, its nice have to have some of the most experienced players if you want to win consistencey. Lots of pushing & shoving was going on last night- when you have a big lead you don’t want to lose a starter on a cheap shot or have him lose his cool and get ejected, that gets you the next week.

BTW, the Calhoun’s back’s name is Alex, Adam is his brother.

I used to live in Buford… the Alabama of high school football….they are not a team… it is a factory…. part of the DNA… State Titles are an expectation…. go Wolves…. make it to the Doom… and I will be there.

There should be a state championship that Buford & Calhoun play for; and, then the real state championship for AA football. I love good football & these two teams show they have the talent. Like Marist … they should choose to play up since they can bring kids into their schools from anywhere around. I do hope Buford wins, but believe it is not fair for the other AA football programs. It would be interesting to see what the roster at Buford shows as the cities the boy come from. MARIST plays up to the level of competition it can compete against … just make Buford a private school and all would be good.

If Marist played up to a level of competition they can compete against then why are they playing basketball….maybe the over estimate themselves.

You are right, CANEFAN, Buford is a joke. They laugh a big deep belly laugh when they look at the excellent facilities, both academic and civic, that smart planning and superb leadership can bring to a community. Next time you venture north of the GNAT LINE why don’t actually visit Buford and then honestly say you would not like for your kid to attend a school with such excellent facilities.

Most AA schools kids and parents don’t have these choices there Buford bud, they have the school where they live and that’s who they play for. Gwinnette CO All stars if all those kids live in Buford – show you are right. Change the team name or live the lie. Those facilities do attract players, for sure. Can’t blame the players. They are a joke on the system.

Looking forward to the Fitzgerald/Buford match-up in 2 weeks as well as seeing if Dublin is playoff worthy against a very strong Calhoun team next Friday. The winner of Dublin/Calhoun should play winner of Buford/Fitzgerald for the Championship. My prediction will be Calhoun vs Buford.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMGGGGGGGGGGGGG……..good luck with C-Col they tough with that homecooking………….

Sorry Jefferson, your area simply does not attract growth. If Buford were the Gwinnett All-Star team you seem to think they are then how do you explain the success of North Gwinnett, Dacula, and other that are within a stones throw of Buford.

Doubt you will find many that will say they are sorry for living in a more populated area than others….the growth simply found its way here..

Just keep thinking the way you think if it makes you feel better, as for me, I am pretty happy with the way things are right now.

For anyone looking at the Calhoun vs Brook Co.score ,dont be fooled. It wasnt remotely that close. The Jackets had the starters pulled half way trough the 3rd Qt.I heard after the game and on a couple other Blogs, Brooks Co.folk talking trash.Come on Brooks Co.folk ,your better than that.I do believe (as stated by Jefferson I think) that Brooks Co.should have played their younger guys as Calhoun did for the experiance factor, but I also know that its very hard to come out of a game especially if its your last.Good Luck in the future Brooks Co.,and for the most part you (except for a few bad apples) are a school of Class…….GO JACKETS!!!

Its to bad the 2nd string for Brooks County couldn’t get into a state playoff game. The game was over at halftime and Calhoun played everybody. The coaches were more intent on making the score respectable than giving the kids a chance to play. I’m sure they practice hard and I know they spent 10 hours on a bus getting to Calhoun and home. For those who didn’t see the game Calhoun could have scored several more times had they left their first team in the game.

Say what you will about Buford, but in Buford, the strive for excellence is not only in football or athletics, but in all aspects of education and growth. They win state championships by giving their students the tools and help they need to succeed. I have lived in Buford for over ten years. I have a son in the second grade who is a special needs child. He has five different professionals working with him every week. This is a level of education that is not available in any other school system of Georgia. You can laugh at Buford all you want, but it truly is a model of how we can help our children succeed. Oh and by the way, we do not get any help from Gwinnett. The swim and dive team has to practice at 5:30am because the County park less than five miles form the high school says they have to give preferential treatment to Gwinnett county schools. Hey we pay Gwinnett County taxes for that park also!

Good luck against Carver CANEFAN, get on them early — that’s the key – they don’t handle adversity well.

Dublin have more speed than Brooks ? Brooks ran to the ball well, several big plays stopped by their speed.

New week, new focus. Good to have a game after Thanksgiving, rather it be at home but — ROADTRIP !!!!!!!!

It’s so funny how about 11 weeks ago everyone in AA was dogging Fitzgerald. They swore up and down the D wasn’t going anywhere. They said that the offense was mediocre. Those coaches, and more importantly those kids, have once again disproven the naysayers. Watch out for the sirens because a category 5 hurricane might just touch down in Columbus.

For Buford’s talent level and ability to draw in non district players in such a large population pool, they should play up to 4AAAA, they would be competitive but not the dominant program they are now. But they won’t play where they have to be competitive.

Jefferson, you are right. Buford High School should not be applauded for their state titles they should be admonished. They represent everything high school coaches and their supporting administration should not be. You can spin it any way you care to, but there is no way that a small area can generate the level of talent year after year in just about every sport period. The GHSA and Buford High School should be ashamed. This type of behavior may help kids at Buford get scholarships, but certainly does nothing to help the kids at other schools. Shame on all of you.

Our kids playing at Elbert I’m sure don’t feel this way because I’m sure they would love the chance at a ring and to play in the dome. Don’t get me wrong, I would love both, but if I had to make a choice, I would MUCH rather see them upset UB in Gloryland and lose next week and not have a chance to play in the dome to add another state championship date on our scoreboard. That would shake the state baby!!!

@wolfbait67 Not so fast my friend! That’s exact what we want, for that UB (football team) to overlook us. Last year UB beats Cook 21-14. Last week we beat them decisively. Don’t think they brought up 22 starting seniors on that team. I would be a little nervous about THIS WEEK.
