It was over. But Blake Tibbs wasn’t done.
Tibbs – already with five receiving touchdowns – returned a kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown with 16 seconds left to give MLK a stunning 50-49 win over Stephenson.
The victory gives No. 5 MLK (10-0) the Region 2-AAAAA title. No. 4 Stephenson finished second.
When Mike Davis plunged in from 4 yards out with 29 seconds left, it looked to everyone involved that he had given the Jaguars a 49-44 win, holding off a Lions team that had roared back from deficits of 17 points late in the third quarter and 26 points in the second quarter.
But, despite Tibbs’ reputation coming into the game, despite his 166 receiving yards and five scores, the Jags rolled the dice with a straight-up kick. Tibbs caught it with his foot on the 18-yard line. Nobody touched him.
He flew up the right side of the field, splitting the defenders, making one cut and then outrunning the kicker down the sideline into the end zone, as much of the MLK bench stormed toward the field.
It was the third “ending” of the game in the final 3:32 – first with the Lions completing a wild comeback to take a 44-43 lead, then Davis’s touchdown run, followed by Tibbs. Each score looked like the winner when it happened. Only Tibbs’ held up.
Stephenson’s final drive started on its own 25-yard line, after the Jaguars had surrendered a 17-point late third-quarter lead to the Lions, who also fought back from 26 down earlier in the first half to take a 44-43 lead.
The Jaguars had thrown the ball far more than usual in this game. But, with the game on the line and time getting short, they stuck to the ground and workhorse Mike Davis.
Davis (39 carries, 212 yards, 2 TD) had 54 of the Jags’ 75 yards on the drive, including the touchdown that could have been the winner.
It would have spoiled what had been a big comeback from the Lions.
MLK trailed 43-26 when Stephenson had to punt with 3:16 left in the third quarter, and it looked like the Jaguars were ready to salt the game away. The Lions had other ideas.
They scored once to cut the lead to 43-32 at the end of the third quarter, then got good field position after a short punt and penalty to convert on fourth and 10 with a 14-yard strike from Dawson (15 of 35 for 296 yards, 6 TD, 3 INT) to Tibbs that made it 43-38 with 8:34 left.
MLK started its final drive at its own 11 with 5:12 left and quickly marched downfield. The Lions got three catches from Tibbs to move the chains, and then Joshua Stanford caught a short pass, made a man miss and went in from 59 yards out to give MLK its first lead of the game.

This was the best High School football game I have ever seen in person. If Blake Tibbs is not a five star recruit then nobody in the entire country should be. He would not allow his team to loose.

Nice to see one-and-done Stephenson, with all of that D-1 talent, get prepped for another postseason collapse. It’s one thing to lose a game but to blow a 24-point lead to your archrivals, well, you have to dig really deep.

@westlakefootball from what I’m told MLK got one receiver from you that you all had at safety after a 50+ catch junior year. Keep the back handed shout out and just congratulate 2 good teams from your region and find a new head coach.

The Best High School Football Game I’ve ever seen! I truly feel bad for those players and fans. Stephenson deserves better than to have it’s heart broken year after year with such great talent! The Coaches let MLK back into the game and tried to play conservative 3rd quarter. MLK played a perfect 2nd half. Good Luck in the Playoffs.

Great game by Stephenson and MLK ! Stephenson gets out coach in every game that means something.I”ve been watching this team since 1999, and every year the coaches do something stupid to lose the game for them. They have great talent every year, but they lack solid coaching every year.

Congrats to MLK! Great Win but we at Stephenson may have the WORST coaching staff in the state! You have got to be kidding me…we are up big at the half and lose! Gartrell WTF were you thinking..They didnt play agressive in the third quarter at all and they made NO ADJUSTMENTS!! MLK has real coaches coaching…they came out after halftime believing they could win, they made the right adjustments, inched there way back in the game and won it. And what is up with the Stephenson special teams coaches..do they not spot where the key playmakers on the opposing team are on the field?? Why in the heck would you even kick the ball to Tibbs or anywhere around him! Kick it deep to SOMEONE ELSE or do a squib kick..We got beat with 28 dern seconds left..Man this staff has got to get it together..SERIOUSLY!! BAD COACHING ONCE AGAIN COST US THE GAME!!

I give credit to both schools for putting on a great show. The display of athletic talent on the field was a treat to watch. Both teams have major defensive flaws and special teams issues that will probably end both teams seasons early in the playoffs. But that aside, it was the most exciting game I saw this season. Amazing.

Greatest High School Football Game I’ve ever seen! What a crazy final 3 minutes! The Stephenson fans sitting on the MLK side seemed to quickly disappear after Tibbs’ kick off return! Great game! Both teams played well…it was worth all the hype! The youtube video was funny, but who is laughing now?

I missed my high school senior night for this game and i must say. This was the best most packed out game I have ever been to!!!!! Both sides were filled to capacity, and it you have seen Halford stadium you know how big it is! The atmosphere was crazy, and the Stephenson & MLK bands made it 10x more exciting. Stephenson and MLK’s school spirit is amazing! It was like a HBCU football game in the stands and D1 on the field! Congrats to MLK football team.
On a side note Stephensons band is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They were extremley “crunk” the whole time. They even played the “Stephenson Beef It Up” and the WHOLE stephenson side did the dance. It was hilarious!

What a great game I see… I’m a Valdosta Wildcat fan and I heard the score at halftime, so I’m shock that the Lions were able to comeback on a running team like Stephenson.. Lots of talk about how this game was played at the D1 level. Hate to say it, but D1 players can kick extra points and kickoffs go beyond the 18-yard line. What prompts a coach with a weak kicking game to kick a “deep” ball to a guy who has already scored multiple times in the game? Kicking the ball out of bounds and starting things at the 30 would have been a no-brainer with a weak kicking game. The quality of coaching has to be questioned when two D1 prospect factories repeatedly lay eggs in the playoffs.

is their weakness. The coaches did not put the players in position to win. At some point you have to make adjustments and double or triple team Blake Tibbs. If you lose force someone else to step up for MLK. Stephenson, it’s time to look at another coaching staff.

MAny of you have answered your own questions, unknowingly. With all of the purported D1 talent ont he field, the last KO SHOULD have been covered. Great athletes make plays…..great teams don’t lose games like this one ended. Congrats to both teams for the entertainment value to those watching. This will be one of those games that when mentioned 15-20 years from now, 100K people will have claimed to have been AT THE GAME.
Results like this is why baseball is still the greatest game in the world, Talent isn’t the most important factor in the game. If a team executes and understands how to play the game, chances are the less talented team will win 80% of the time. It has everything to do with how a coach manages the game.

Kudos to MLK, the players and coaches never gave up. Being a THS grad. c\o ‘87, I’ve seen many wonderful games at Dekalb Memorial Stadium in my day. Last night maybe a top 5; the best played and highest attended has to be a state championship game between SWD, and the Parkview Panthers, man jokers was standing on the track, standing in the woods, standing everywhere. Side note; that SWD QB was the best high school player in the county in the last 30 years.

I am so proud of both teams. The players and the coaches of both teams are to be praised for their hard work. This game was well played and well coached. Somebody had to lose.The critics of the coaches and players of either team need to SHUT UP!!! …….You don’t know about how long and hard the preparation is for the show that is put on every Friday night. Karma is a mug! I was at the game, not a fan of either school but a long time Dekalb resident. As I walked in I believe I probably was pulling a bit for Stephenson, but the quickly changed when their coaching staff failed to have his players out fir the National anthem. For all the building me a scholarship talk, seems teaching respect false to the wayside. It was a well played game. Quite a few questionable coaching moves but hey thats south Dekalb county for you. @Queen Black last night was almost the perfect evening for a rival game, but it was almost tainted by what MLK did at the end. That could have gotten really ugly very quickly, this should be a teachable moment for both student bodies.
@SWD alum, man back in the day I say SWD put up about 82 on Douglas over at Panthersvile. Buck had them boys rolling over everyone. With the talent at Stephenson, Coach Godfrey would have at least 3 state titles.

Phenomenal game! Also watched replay of Valdosta game upon returning home. After seeing MLK vs Stephenson neither Valdosta or Colquitt have same caliber athletes. Haven’t seen much 5A ball this year, but what I’ve seen going back to the Corky Kell Classic none of them match the talent displayed last night. Wow! Clearly MLK coaches made tremendous second half adjustments and don’t understand any of the decisions made by Stephenson coaches. Actually, very few decisions were visible at all! Unfortunate for the athletes! Anyway, great game by both teams from a neutral observer. Proud of how you represented Dekalb county. Great fans, great bands, great schools, great high school Friday night lights environment Dekalb county style. Guess it’s time for MLK to release a YouTube video as Stephenson has been all over the internet, radio, etc. but you have to back it up! You’ll get another chance starting next week. Good luck to both programs in the playoffs continue to make us proud.

I’ll say this, Stephenson has a GREAT team and they are all in! They play with a lot of heart! The regualar season is over and the real season starts next weekend..either you win or go home!! We don’t have to question what our players are made of but now we REALLY will get a chance to see what our coaching staff is made of because belive you me we are in a playoff bracket where it’s gonna get real..REAL SOON! We have the talent to knock off anybody but i’m not gonna lie..our march to the dome is going to be EXTREMELY tough!! First we host Lowndes, if we win, more than likely we will face Grayson, from there, more than likely Hillgrove! These teams have great coaching staffs and the Stephenson coaching staff is going to have to GET IT DONE!! The coaching staff has no one to blame but themselves for what happened last night! Ive seen some bad coaching, but last night may be one of the WORST! The past is the past, lets move foward and get ready for the playoffs! In my opinion the coaching staff at Stephenson has a lot to prove to the players, school, and COMMUNITY! We are hungry for a state championship and we deserve it! If this season is a bust with this team..it may well be time for Gartrell and company to go!! We need all jaguar supporters and fans to come out and cheer on our team as we host Lowndes! Anything can happen in the playoffs, but if things go as predicted the game vs Lowndes maybe Stephenson’s last home game for the playoffs! If we beat the vikes, we would have to travel to both Grayson and Hillgrove..they are both number 1 seeds in their respected regions.

Wow!!!What a great game last night,this game goes down as one of the best games in history. The Davis kid for Stephenson is a Beast and BLAKE TIBBS balled out. I am a MLK fan. Great win Lions!!! I would like to say to all the Jaguar fans, great game. I am proud of both teams. Wishing both teams the best for next week against Coffee and Lowndes (Got get em’). Both bands were great last night! I have read some criticism on this blog from a South Georgia fan about the MLK/STEPHENSON bands. A point of fact to remember; many rural schools perform Corp style; MLK/Stephenson are Show style bands. Both are legitimate styles; however show style is a lot more fun and exciting for the students and fans!

Best game ever. So much talent on that field last night. Stephenson amazes me every yr with sending those kids all over the country. You cant say those coaches dont do everything for those kids bc so many coaches do not even try to help their players with tapes, recruituing trips, camps, and just getting exposure it is alot of work. Every yr we see a talented stephenson team get beat by well coached teams in the playoffs and usually early. Those South GA teams are coached up great and have talent and size and they usually eat stephenson up and overwhelm them it usually is a blow out. This yr though they could win off talent alone but it is tough it the playoffs every week is a battle getting the best out of the players and opposing coaches.

Coach Carlson, Coach Evans and new coaching staff have been there for ONLY 2 seasons and already putting up disastrous numbers… last season we ended up being 8-4 and this season they are 10-0. @Westlake grow up!!! Westlake has proven they cannot not play with top tier Dekalb Football teams. Quit walking around with your pants hanging down, talking like a fool (real talk, shawty, bruh, dem boyz) and skipping the weight room during the off season; you can win the state. But the team at Westlake is not committed to winning a State Championship, because the players don’t carry themselves like state champions. As a 2010 Graduate of stephenson I have been around stephenson football for quite some time. This was by far the greatest game I have ever seen. Its a shame someone had to lose that game. I agree with all of you who say stephenson was out coached. I have seen evryone of these D1 caliber players from stephenson all have those championship dreams shattered because of coaching. 2002 reggie ball, craig lumpkin 2005 (perhaps the best team) Marcus Ball, Jermaine Cunningham, perry riley, Andre Anderson ETC. 2010 Raymond sanders, Kenny ladler , Tyrone Cornelious, Mike Thornton jabari johnson, ETC all this talent and no state championships….You tell me thats not coaching…had these players been at Camden or lowndes they’d have championships every year. Ex. Colquitt county got the coach from Hoover right? He’s been here 3 years and already has been to both semi finals and the state finals if I’m not mistaken. Thats coaching and his teams werent undefeated either he barely made it into the playoffs…C’mon Stephenson we have to do better so can be considered as the top team in 5A like Camden and lowndes and other South GA teams

@TheKidKazu You are not being fair, if’s and nut’s… Well Camden, Lowndes, and Colquitt are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT enrollments(bigger than Stephenson), NOT under control of the school system, have A LOT more coaches on staff! I really don’t think a lot of people in Dekalb realize how bad it is, NONE of the coaches you spoke of at Camden, Lowndes, or Colquitt would even give a THOUGHT at coaching here in Dekalb! I could also say that if Gartrell coached at one of those schools and had the SAME support, money, facilities,etc he would be just as successful with titles.
Did you forget that Kregg Lumpkin was NOT in the playoffs because he was injured his Sr year? I do recall 2005 making it to the dome, the champion was either gong to be Stephenson or Lowndes. You can’t give these other coaches credit when they have it much better than Stephenson does in terms of support, coaching staffs, salary coaches make,facilities the coaches desire! You put them here in Dekalb with how things have been run, money split between all schools,etc. Before Corey Jarvis left MLK for Duluth he began a campaign to raise money to put turf on the practice field, guess how they ended for MLK? Talent is one aspect, but it takes much more than that to win championships in football yaer in and out! I understand not liking calls coaches makes, but don’t just diminish all of the efforts they have put it with virtually NO HELP!

The people who saw them in Tift County commented on how well prepared, coached,and disciplined the team was. You know Gartrell getting as many people to the next level is actually turning people against him for losing a game, or not winning a title. That doesn’t seem too fair to me, but I guess he will take the good with the bad. Nobody likes to be talked bad about, especially when you have done nothing to warrant such comments. Maybe this loss is what the entire Stephenson community needed, to see what they are really made of this year… Good luck to all Dekalb teams in the playoffs!!!

@Dekalb Fan You are absolutely right but at the same time I believe that quantity of coaches should not determine the quality of coaches. Not bad talking gatrell and the rest of the Stephenson Staff its just frustrating to see such good teams fall because of bad coaching decisions. If it just happened once or twice its fine but its been happening for almost a decade now. Something has to give. I totally agree with you on funding for dekalb schools since it is all spread equally I assume, but its not like the teams that are winning championships have million dollar coaching staffs. In professional sports when you cant get your team to win big games, they dont wait year after year until you do they replace you with someone who will, and thats just life. I commend Gartrell for putting his players into great schools, He’s a great teacher, but Criticism for him will not stop until he wins a championship

@Andre, dude SWD used to beat the brakes off everyone back in the day, I think it was ‘85 or ‘86 at pantherville stadium. I think Clemente was QB, and Davenport was the WR, along with Stallworth at CB.(steve and cedric, later played at GT) with Jaba at DT. Fred Jones was like a WB I think.

Back then SW had the most of the talent in Dekalb and metro area and we use to say the same thing everyone is saying about Gartrell, can’t win the big one. Outside of the Quincy era, Coach Godfrey has never had as much top tier talent year after year as Stephenson.

I am a Stephenson supporter. Hands Down! This lost can do one or two things. Either fuel Stephenson Staff to display probably one the state greatest runs to the State Title or come out flat and loose. This is the time to see how Stephenson respond in their game vs Lowndes. This is the time to see if this coaching staff is really coaching or just relying on their athletes. This is the time to see if the players are together to obtain their goal. LOL @ Coffee Trojan#44.. Do you think there is another high powered offense on either side of the brackets other than MLK? Although difficult it is very well possibly that these two teams can meet in the State Championship. I don’t another team in this seeding that will score 50 points on Stephenson. I do see MLK putting up HUGE POINTS on Coffee. One thing I payed close attention to in that game is Stephenson gave MLK 20 points on mental mistakes. If Stephenson coaching staff get mental game down for the next 5 games I promise you Stephenson will be playing for the State Championship.Everything starts Monday. lowndes is not the dominant lowndes of the past this year……….at times we can be and look like it but overall we are not…. We have lots of speed…….lots. Our defense is hitting stride at the right time, but this lowndes team doesnt have those 4 or 5 plaers like reid…demps…telvin smith etc. However,,,,,,,,i have been to every game…………..all 10….and we are 7-3…………cd very easily be 9-1…..valdosta fans wd agree they snuck out with a victory even they didnt expect being down by 10 with a min to go. Lowndes lost that on coaching. The mceachern game cd have went either way also…………early in year……….lowndes just wasnt ready for that challenge with still trying to experiment . We lost …………but we also dropped 2 game tying td passes in endzone as time ran out …one that shd have been caught. Any 9th grade staff in Gwinnett County could win a state championship with the talent at Stephenson.
Stephenson, you are a joke and disgrace. What you promote and foster is the reason why this country is in the shape it is in now. Your athletes deserve better, but when you allow them to act the way they do, the good Lord seems to allow your true colors to shine when things get tough. Good luck with all those “signees” who either won’t report to school or will not make it when times get tough. Sad. The only thing that could make the outcome last Friday any better would be if the GHSA finally stepped in to intervene.

As the person who wrote the story, I’m in a good position to answer why it wasn’t mentioned that Tibbs was a UGA commit. It’s a fair question. My deadline was 10:40, and the game didn’t end until around 10:53, so I had to send my story as close to the end of the game as possible. That meant that I was writing all during the fourth quarter while also trying to watch the game, keep a play by play and individual stats. As such, my story was pretty fluid during those last several minutes. Initially, I had mentioned that he was a UGA commit in one of the versions of the story, but that part got deleted when it became obsolete, and I simply forgot to put it back in my haste to get the story in ASAP. I also forgot to add back in Stephenson’s record, which I had in an earlier version. It was one of the most hectic writing nights I’ve ever had, honestly. If those were my only omissions/errors, I’m actually fairly pleased. Still, my apologies to any UGA fans who felt it should have been in the story. I agree, but it’s the fault of me, not anyone at the AJC.

Jeff Haws.. No need to mention apologize. Everyone knows that Tibbs is commited to UGA. Why does it have to be mention again? Is it to keep the UGA fans informed that TIBBS is not reconsidereing any place else? Let’s hope UGA use his talents to make UGA better instead of sitting him on the bench or trying to redshirt him like they have done so many other outstanding players here in Georgia.
Again Mr. Haws good article and you did an outstanding job in writing in the amount of time you had sir.

I am neutral in the Spephenson-MLK game debate.Dont take my word for it-have someone verify who has seen the film but the news clip on Friday nights game showed someone with a handfull of jersey(backside)during the big return by MLK.Check it out-wont change the game but would be interesting.

Just a PACKER’S opinion!
CATS played GREAT defense and offensive play calling was much better than ours. It was a defensive battle most of the game where mistakes is what beats ya. We made the most mistakes and played with less passion than the CATS.
Like Propst said in the paper today, “We just did not show-up looking like we were ready to play….We just self-imploded…We got out-played and out-coached.”
Pulling for all FOUR Region 1AAAAA Teams in the play-off!
Go PACK!…Go CATS!….Go TROJANS!…..Go VIKINGS!

Did I Say That? – Much thanks for the kind words. That’s greatly appreciated. I agree with the complaints that it should have been in there, but you make a good point that it’s not entirely necessary for a high school story.
Again, thanks. Glad you enjoyed the story. Hope it did a somewhat decent job of painting the picture of the finish of maybe the best high school football game I’ve seen in many years of covering this game.

Blacksmith14-I agree with you -there are no perfectly called games.It was just an interesting obsevation.They seldom shown replays of close calls during the Carrollton games-probably mandated.

AS A STEPHENSON PLAYER I MUST SAY THAT THE PLAYERS LOST THIS GAME. WE TURNED THE BALL OVER 4 TIMES FOR 4 TOUCHDOWNS. AS PLAYERS WE GAVE THEM 28 POINTS. IF YOU TAKE AWAY THOSE POINTS WE WIN 49 TO 22 . THATS NOT BAD COACHING. THATS THE PLAYERS NOT PLAYING. WE WILL SEE HOW MANY PEOPLE ON THIS BLOG WILL BE THERE SATURDAY!!!!!!

@westlake football. You guys are the dumbest ever. On friday we will still be playing and your season is over with. I feel sorry for the kids. It really killed yall to lose those players. Maybe if you had a better coaching staff they would still be there. Everyone that transferred is still playing. One of the high school games I have ever seen. Who told that kid to kick the ball to the most dangerous player on field. Stephenson coaches should be taking out and shot by firing squad , you had the game won . Mike Davis is the best back in the state of Ga.he is a stud.

Gwinnett loves Dekalb can you tell me what you mean about Stephenson, you are a joke and disgrace. What you promote and foster is the reason why this country is in the shape it is in now. Your athletes deserve better, but when you allow them to act the way they do, the good Lord seems to allow your true colors to shine when things get tough? Can you elaborate?

Heh … no idea, HELLO. But I’ll leave that up to the esteemed Michael Carvell to figure out. I just cover the games when they need me. FWIW, I think Dawson’s height hurts him considerably when it comes to recruiting. He’s a heck of a player, though.

@fan2011. No that these kids are trying to get schloraships. Westlake had five kids to transfer into there program this year just like other school have kids to transfer. And sometimes its not just for sports reasons that kids transfer. Last year Westlake had kids that was forced to transfer out because of the athletic director who very much dislike the football program at Westlake.Its all about knowing how to use the talent you got. Two years ago Westlake was the team to be on and they had more transfer in than any other 5A program, they just went down hill when this new coach took over the program.

Yall always blaming some else for your failures. Your season is over with so whoever transferred – its a done deal just like yall season.
To MLK and Stephenson- – the time to be divided has ended. You both are from the same side of town. Yall have to face these south georgia boys now and shut there mouth just as MLK did to Valdosta. its not about the size of the dog in the fight, but its about the fight in the dog. MLK is hungry – are you Stephenson. We hit first and ask questions after the fourth quarter. Good Luck Stepehnson on saturday and we at MLK and fans will be there to support you.

This was the best and most entertained game that I have ever seen in the 13 years of watching my son play ball. Congrats to MLK to staying focusing and make big plays in the end. I also want to congrats Stephenson for playing their hurts out….both teams are just awesome. Continue to strive for the best…..Blake,Josh,Jamonde’,Damarcus,Mike and everyone on both teams. The field turf at Hallford stadium was on FIRE, outstanding athletes from both teams was on display and they didn’t disappoint. ONE of the best HS football games, from the player’s perspective, I’ve attended. Congratulations to MLK, the adjustments the coaching staff made at halftime, was a demonstration of a developing and maturing staff. The LOINS will be a major player in the 2011 5A championship run…representing DeKalb at its best. Comments on Stephenson’s coaching have been made by other poster, there no needed to continue down that road, but I will comment this…”You had your foot on the lion’s throat and you let up”.
The DeKalb fan base will be supporting the LIONS and JARGURS as they both prove their skeptics wrong…WIN the last 5A CHAMPIONSHIP as it currently exists!!!!!

Its really sad that Stephenson players focus on hurting MLK players instead of playing the game. Stephenson did it last year and again this year. But you have to remember what you do to others witll come back on you in some form or fashion. Both years they tried but it did not work BECAUSE he has a praying mother.
