You know, only a few short weeks ago East Coweta’s fans were screaming because their team was not ranked and were 7 -0. Now look at their won loss record, 6-3. Or was that last year, or the year before? I distinctly recall Todd Holcomb writing that he did not have them ranked because they had reached 6 -0 before but fell apart. H-mmmmm! Guess the guy knew what he was doing!

I am still amazed at how many people say really negative things over and over about the schedule of teams in Region 2-AAAAA and Region 3-AAAAA, when both of those regions are probably better than Region 6-AAAAA, top to bottom. That brings up another question, why is region 6-AAAAA nearly always so weak (except for Roswell)? They have the same opportunities and basically the same kinds of kids as regions 4,5,7 and 8. What is wrong? There has to be an underlying reason. Is it apathy in the county wide athletic department? Why aren’t their fans asking these questions?

@AViking Fan,

All teams can do is play the schedule in front of them. When Region 2AAAAA was put together last year, it was going to be tough. With the exception of Langston Hughes (which is in year 2 of region play) and Luella, the other 6 were in the state playoffs in 2009.

It also the worst geographic Region in Metro Atlanta. Newton is almost 2 hours from East Coweta and Newnan, 90 minutes from Westlake and Langston. I know thats routine for some South GA schools but its extremely rare up this way.

As for Region 3 AAAAA, population wise only Camden is a true 5A school. But how would you fix it? Split it in to 2 schools?

One advantage South GA schools have I believe is likely obtaining Quality coaches. The better programs in the Metro have them but most are terrible.

Looks like the most even 5AAAAA teams in a while, since 2006, and then there was co- champions….. I still think that the run Colquitt had last year will carry over into the playoffs again and they are going to be the team to beat….. (beards and all)….. just jokin pack…..Hillgrove is impressive as well, within a pretty strong region #4 with a few exceptions…. This is not to disrespect ANY team in 5AAAAA.

We are still in the experimental stage at the end of the season (Not good) for us and great for the beginng of the playoffs for region #2…. But if we do get by the 1st game of playoff LOOK OUT…… I still got to go with my Vikings…. at home or away…

Starting TOO TOO slow and that’s not good because with our running team it’s harder to come from behind, We have done it before and hope IF WE HAVE TO will can and will do it a again.

It will be a whole new world of high school ball next year as GHSA is going to 6A division…
Let the chips fall where they may. The Vikings are here to play, and stay…..Come on region #1 5a lets show um what we’re made of in the playoffs……

Good luck to all play off bound teams……….. great year for 5AAAAA

North Gwinnett, if you guys win your region and we both handle business in the first and second round of the playoffs. You will get your chance to avenge that beat down we gave you. It’s been a great year of high school football in GA.

My prediction for the 5A crown is the team that wins all their playoff games…ask me who will win all their playoff games and I will tell you I have no idea. I think everyone has a decent shot.

@battleaxe kid – You shouldn’t be kidding about the beards on the Colquitt players. I got a close look at the co-captains when they went out for the coin toss. What did I see? Some well groomed beards. (Actually some of the Coffee players had beards too).

@LHHS Observer – I would imagine the top three or four teams are starting to run into trouble scheduling out-of-region games with Quality teams. Hardly anyone wants to schedule a strong team that’s been showing the consistancy they have been showing.

Looks like all of this is going to change with the addition of Class 6A and the proposed realignments by the GHSA Reclassification Committee for next year anyway. I personally think the shake-up is going to be so drastic it’s going to hurt Georgia football for years. With the exception of 1-6A almost all of the traditional rivalries in the state are going to be lost.

@ Valdosta-Lowndes Co. (28 State Titles) , If valdosta beats Colquitt Co. does that makes MLK & region 2AAAAA better than you since MLK went up there and beat Valdosta on their home field…

If Valdosta beats Colquitt, yes Valdosta would be the better team on that night. On paper that would give MLK the advantage. Then again at 5-5 last year, MLK had the advantage also and got beat on thier home turf by Colquitt. It was a shoot out but Colquitt won. As far as region 2 being better than Region 1, we will see how that shakes out in the first round of the playoffs.

well everyone who was at the game last year against mlk vs colquitt that they refs gave them that game how you call a 15 yard penalty against mlk band when both bands were playing. all i can say is if it a repeat of last year the final results will not be the same buddy! you can bet your country pork rinds on that!

pmuckle — We (Lowndes0 learned last week in Tift how the rule applies when it comes to bands being told not to play. The Tift QB complained about our band and the ref made us stop playing when their QB was under center or in the shotgun. However Tift’s band kept on playing. We learned the ref doesn’t tell the home team’s band to stop unless the visiting team complains, or vice versa, which we didn’t. The Ref’s can not tell a band to stop playing unless a team complains, according to the GHSA rule book. If the band continues to play after being warned, the penalty is 15 yards against the team who has been warned. SDounds like the refs got it right last year in the game you mentioned.

Figured most Viking fans to be Pulling for the Packers to score 33 points on the Wildcats to help ya’ll get the second seed, or are you looking at potential brackets

@ Jammerz & Camden74, that’s (ALL) I here from you guys talking about histroy and what all you have done in the past, what the last few years few years has brought to Stephenson & MLK in the past. Why is it any different now that I’m talking about the present ad! @ Colquit won by a point over MLK last year or it could have very well been MLK in the championship game…

Unless they knock each other out……..Colquitt, Valdosta, Lowndes & Camden will all be in the Quarter-Finals and one or more will play at the DOME!

Just a Packer-Fan’s prediction!

P.S. …..Don’t know who’s gonna win at Death Valley this Friday. Tickets “sold-out” in two hours in Moultrie yesterday. Glad I got a few tickets.

Game could go either way…….”That’s why they play the GAME!”

Bazemore-Hyder will be rocking Friday night with the Cats and Packers. I have been to 5 cats/packers games and the pack have won each time. I will be sitting on the packers side this Friday and I predict the Packers to make it #7. Packers 35 Cats 17.

I wish football was as prized in the North as it is in the South. There is a big difference in the attitudes of the students as far as going to games are concerned . There is even a difference in the metro area. The schools in Gwinnett and Cobb, North Fulton Paulding etc, have more a love affair with it than say schools in the City of Atlanta, Dekalb, Clayton and Henry counties. Wishing to see the fans come out and support the kids in the playoffs. Lovejoy and Jonesboro will be hosting 1st round games and look good enoigh to make runs in the playoffs Good luck to all the Region 4AAAA teams as they try to exercise the demon that was last years 1st round sweep.

I would have thought before now Wilcox County would have imploded, with the departures of Nick Marshall. Lonnie Outlaw, and others from the last several years.
Also check out Nebraska football and see how former Wilcox player Alphonso Dennard is doing. Pretty well. Yet Coach Mark Ledford has somehow reloaded. Congrats Wilcox on maybe finishing 10-0 in regular season. in Region 2-A.

only by an unforseen last second act did brookwood not win. MLK or Stephenson or Walton or Peachtree or NG or any south GA will take down Grayson. Why= no diversity in play calling (so slow used all time outs in 1st qt???????) and no adjustments in defense patterns. Again best overall team talent in the state however lack of best coaching=no long run in playoffs. south GA teams will win out
