AAAAA blog: Colquitt-Valdosta, MLK-Stephenson, P’Ridge-North Gwinnett to decide final region titles in showdowns

Four teams clinched region titles Friday, and three more will be decided next week in games between teams tied for first in what will be the most intriguing Friday of the season in Class AAAAA.

First, let’s look ahead -

-Colquitt County (8-1) will play Valdosta (7-2) for the Region 1 title on Friday in Valdosta. It would be Colquitt’s first region title since 1999, Valdosta’s first since 2003.

-No. 4 Stephenson and No. 5 M.L. King, both 9-0, will play Friday at Hallford Stadium for the Region 2 title. It will be the seventh straight year that one of these DeKalb County schools has won 2-AAAAA. MLK won in 2010 and 2007. Stephenson won in 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009. They’ve met when they were 5-0 and 6-0, but never 9-0.

-No. 8 North Gwinnett and No. 10 Peachtree Ridge, both 8-1, will play at North Gwinnett on Friday to decide Region 7. Both Gwinnett County schools are in Suwanee. North Gwinnett is the two-time defending champion. Peachtree Ridge won in 2008.

Clinching region titles Friday were Hillgrove Hillgrove (Region 4), Walton (Region 5), Alpharetta (Region 6) and Grayson (Region 8). For Hillgrove and Alpharetta, it was their first region titles ever.

Alpharetta trailed Centennial 20-0 but won 32-26 on a last-minute touchdown. Second-ranked Grayson had a close call, as well. Kasey Gaines intercepted a pass and returned it 15 yards for the winning touchdown with 27 seconds left.

No. 1-ranked Camden County (Region 3) clinched its region the week before.

The Grayson- brookwod game was impressive. Unfortunate the game ended with a silly mistake. Hiowever, the coaches at Brookwood lost the game when they refused to go for a first down on 4th down inside Grayson territory. When you play not to lose, you normally do lose.

Okay JAGS…its time to show MLK what a well-rounded team can do…not a pass-happy, no defense team like they are!

Deedawg, check yourself. Did you see the difference between Stephenson’s defense and MLK’s defense in the East Coweta games? Please pay attention. Just because you are a Stephenson fan please don’t ignore the facts. Which defense was better. Can Stephenson defend against the pass? We’ll see Friday night with the “no adjustment strategy” of the Stephenson coaching staff.

@Mighty Lion King I agree your game to you will be the “game of the week in ga” as will other ones around the state Fri nite..Not intending to take anyone’s limelight but the rivalry between the Packers and Wildcats goes back DECADES and i mean DECADES long before your school and many across the state were even thought of. A friendly rivalry of course but still it is always a big game for us down here. With that said as not to offend …Good luck to everyone:)

So there will be more people at the Stephenson/ MLK game than they bring to thier home playoff games. The last 2 years I have travelled to watch the Packers play there and we have matched if not had more fans in the stands than the home sides both years.

I was really disappointed in the (lack of) performance from Grayson last night. I don’t think they have what it takes to go too deep. Sure they won, but it was unimpressive considering what they hyped themselves up to be.

Cats vs Pack in Death Valley. Reminds me of the atmosphere when Pack played Valdosta in the Hogpen for the State Title in 94′. This may be the “oldest” rival in Ga. Two great teams with simular offenses and hard nosed defenses. Should be a historical battle for the Region 1 Title. Believe me the Packer team and fans will match the HomeTeam with passion and intensity.

May the best TEAM win!

P.S. Colquitt, Valdosta and Lowndes will still be around in the Quarter Finals and one will play for the Title in the Dome! Just a PACKER’s prediction!

Just some historical info for colquitt co and valdosta fans. The oldest info I could find is…. our teams first met in 1950. They have had 67 total meetings, soon to be 68! This dates back to colquitt being known as the moultrie packers. Colquitt’s current record vs valdosta is 20-45-2. So we got sum catching up to do!

So they go to see the band huh, in 09 the Stephenson band was a no show at the game. If bands are what you want to see, if ya’ll get to play Lowndes, the Bridgemen will give you a show, not just a dance routine.

The Stephenson MLK game will be the biggest in the state because not only is they located 15 minutes from downtown Atlanta, but they both are surrounded around all of the major television stations and the highly recruited D1 players from both Stephenson & MLK will draw many recruiters and observers. They both are located in the biggest county per miles (Dekalb). Hallford stadium will hold up to 15,000 capacity not to mention standing room if they choose to allow it! It’s going to be a hard fought, neighborhood friendly rivalry played! May the best team win headed into the road to the state championship. I have interest in both teams… GO JAGS… GO LIONS… :)

@ Jammerz ,please don’t involved the band because Stephenson band is most classy because not only can they boogie but they put on some good musical & classical shows as well! Have you seen their band perform the Wizard of Oz, no dancing just musical & instrumental, they (STEPHENSON) have had several shows where they showed good marching & musical selections. So don’t bash or down grade their band if you haven’t seen them or have knowledge of what they are capable of going….

Lowndes County is no way bigger than Dekalb County, no comparison, there are 21 HS schools in Dekalb, what will happen if Dekalb went to 10 or even 15 schools, over 4,0000 students per school, what dominant school system that will be when it comes to athletics… :)

MLK vs Stephenson might be the biggest game Nov. 4th, but after that neither team will be a factor. Let’s put it into perspective. Colquitt and Valdosta have played A LOT better competition than MLK or Stephenson. I know MLK beat Valdosta, but it wasn’t domination and Valdosta isn’t even ranked. NG and PTR have definately played the best competition out of the teams in any of these three match ups. PTR and NG are 8-1, and that one loss for PTR is to Walton (9-0 and pretty good in case you haven’t seen them) and McEachern (8-1) for NG. MLK will be the first ranked team Stephenson has DARED to play ALL season. Give me a break. You can huff and puff all you want but it’s all just hot air when you consistently lose in the early rounds of the playoffs every year.

@ nukieie , where you at??? Stephenson has much history in it’s young history, they have made the plaoff every year since they became a school other than their first 2 season when they played a non region schedule! They have lead the state in D1 signees the last three seasons and was said this is is amongs the nations best with D1 signees, and you are saying no history or did you mean no history of state championships! That will change this year though!!!!!!! :)

No need to downtalk bands or which stadium will fill with fans Friday night but here are some FACTS.. each time the Packers were in ATLANTA including playoffs and DOME Colquitt County side was FULL compared to their opponents. Valdosta and Lowndes are very well used to recruiters being present at their games. No need to compare which game will be bigger. The game between the cats and packers is just a ….”dark ages thing”…. @Jammerz totally agree about the Lowndes band they are AWESOME really enjoyed their performance!

Colquitt is the best team money can buy, for sure! Coffee needs to clean the coaching house and start fresh next year. When your punt team is on the field and your punter is picking his nails on the sidelines, it time for change. All the teams Coffee plays does squad drills before the game, not Coffee…. their to good for that stuff, don’t need it…..not!!! While I’m on a roll, no matter how good Tyreek Hill is, you always run north and south….. he doesn’t…. No college will want him n matter how fast he might be.
