AAA Blog: Top teams dominate with defense

Zeroes were heroes for ranked teams in Class AAA. Seven of the nine ranked teams that played put up shutouts, the closest of them No. 2 St. Pius, which escaped with a 7-0 victory against Washington. Here’s a look at some other notable games:

  • A clincher for Mary Persons: Mary Persons narrowly missed the playoffs each of the past two years but secured a week 11 game courtesy of two second-half touchdowns by Corey Head.
  • Sandy Creek has a success Kitt: DeMarre Kitt scored on two big plays (a punt return and a pass reception) while the top-ranked Patriots’ defense posted its fifth shutout and third in its past four games. The Sandy Creek winning streak grew to 38 games, and the Patriots have won 12 in a row against county rivals.
  • Burke County cooks up a shutout: Montres Kitchens scored three touchdowns, including a 92-yard pass reception on the first play of the fourth quarter, and No. 4 Burke held Butler to 157 total yards in a 35-0 victory. It was the second shutout for Burke, which faces No. 5 Thomson in the 3-AAA championship next week.
  • Dalton gets a measure of payback: Dalton forfeited four wins after the GHSA ruled a player who transferred from Southeast Whitfield ineligible. Southeast filed the initial complaint with the GHSA. The Catamounts were leading 7-AAA, Division A before the forfeits, but needed a win Friday night to qualify for the Region 7-AAA play-in game. They blanked Southeast 35-0 for their second shutout.
  • Another shutout for St. Pius: The No. 2-ranked Golden Lions posted their fifth shutout with a 7-0 victory against Washington. The lone score came on a 10-yard touchdown by Ryan Braswell. The Lions, who play Woodward Academy for the 5-AAA title next week, have allowed just 56 points in nine games.
  • Zero for Crisp: Cairo also recorded a shutout and its offense helped keep visiting Crisp County at bay with an 18-play, 93-yard drive, capped by Terrell Cason’s 13-yard run in a 24-0 win. It was the second shutout for the Syrupmakers, who have had five games decided by a touchdown or less.

Woodward has gotten NO media all year and just won our region title with a 21-20 nailbiter over Columbia and their three big Division 1 dudes. We are very young and very hungry and will go to St. Pius heavy under-dogs. Anybody remember David and Goliath? Just saying……

You also need to keep in mind points for vs points against for the season. Woodward 26/16 and Pius is 37/6. So maybe you can cling on to your david vs. goliath theory for the week, but it still doesn’t change the fact that your going to be a no.2 seed at the end of next week.

@ AAA FANS & BURKE COUNTY HATERS…, BURKE CO. 35 BUTLER 0 , BUTLER WAS 7-1 , this game was played in augusta, ga. at butler stadium, IT DOESNT MATTER WHERE THEM BEARS PLAY, over 500 total yards, tonite, and the 22 seniors, saw the middle of third quarter turned over to the jv. MONTRESE KITCHENS ,is the best overall player in ga., a BEAST at safety, a force at wideout , smart , 4.4 speed, a big time hitter, a BEAST at RB, but the most exciting player is GATOR GREEN , THOMSON BULLDOGS, HERE WE COME, oh and by the way, THOMSON has not been playing anybody, just as butler……….

WA’s side of the sub-region is much stronger obviously, so there’s your PA disparity. It’s Woodward vs Pius – the way it’s supposed to be. War Eagle!!

ken, congrats on making it to the region title game, especially with such a young team. Unfortunately, as far as media coverage goes, continuity is key. That respect has to be earned on a consistent basis. That being said, beat Pius and the recognition will be there, and well deserved. I think its going to be a good game. Go Golden Lions

@steven Buford is a good team, however they live in a county with many 5A schools and have the ability to recruit the top players in this area. Playing 2A ball is why they dont get respect and never will. Even if they played 5A they would still have the better players because of the loop hole they are using to recruit, but they would not win state every year and would have to work hard to make the the playoffs. Until they step up in classification they will be counted as a glorified private school just trophy hunting and beating up on little Small schools. Bottom line nobody outside of Buford cares what there final out come of there season will be because it does not mean anything. Whats funny is they boast as if they have really achieved something. I live in a small town that has a private school that won a state championship last year in baseball. We went to the game and were really shocked at how weak the other team. I remember thinking how in the world did this team make to the state championship but then I realized the difference between A level playing field and schools who have the upperhand. We spent 40,000 on championship rings for our boys. Looking at the rings and trophies really does not give me any emotion because I know that there teams within 50 miles of our town that could have beat us But were State Champs right? They are 20 football teams in this state that could BEAT Buford.

thanks Trojan94 …were gonna need all the love we can muster. Its going to be electric. i told you all year this was going to be the game. We should have come into it undefeated, but losing to Drew probably was the best thing to happen to us. our underclassmen were feeling themselves and the drew loss brought us back to earth! In all honesty we should have put 40 on drew. missed assignment after missed assignment and poor reads. Kill ya every time! We almost had a hiccup at jackson thinking of SC. but its on now!
Listen….ya hear that roar? thats them Tigers and the tiger faithful coming to the battlefield ready to rock!

Only 1 playoff quality team in region 5-St Pius;but like Carrollton in regon 6 we will not know the strength of either until the playoffs.Region competetion for both appers to be weak.A 7-0 struggle over Washington raises a lot of questions.I still prefer Grady in the first round for Carrolltons opponent. The #2 seed from R5 will face Thomson or Burke co. in game 2.

The Bridge is weak and soft. We will beat the hell out of them. 42-0 easily JV will be in by he end of the first. The Seniors will party all night. Those tigers have no teeth at all. They Have to be the luckiest 8-1 team I have ever seen. mhc you`ve been asking for it. Tell your little powder puff boys to come get it, we take on all comers. There is zero chance the bridge could win. And ORad, we would crush you too. Mr Coo Quit County.

st pius wont go far in the playoffs. Washington shut them down and should have won the game. Washington moved the ball on pius and had them on their heels. Bad fourth down call be Coach Hackney but Washington will be a team on the rise. Hats of to the defense they hit Pius hard and often………………………………

Brier Creek:you may be right-Washington Co will be strong competition if you assume that the teams that beat them were extra strong. As I keep saying none of us will know for sure until the 2nd round and after. The media had us almost convinced last season that Cairo was invincible going into the playoffs but that changed.Waco will have decent competition in round 1 thanks to a deep region 4.I think we may see a few surprises next weekend that will shape seeding.

Ok old carrollton fan, Cairo has never been percieved as invinicible, secondly region 1 is one of the most competitive from top to bottom check out all of the region games. Are you that ignorant? We dont get CAKE walks in our region.

Syrupmaker:Just going by blogs and newsmedia in reference to last year.Competition within regions wont matter when playoffs start. Most regions in the state are dominated by 1 or 2 teams year in and year out.Guess that makes me ignorant. All we can offer are opinions-the games will decide the rest.

Eastside over Henry Co is not a forgone conclusion this weekend. Henry Co has an excellent QB in Chris Moody, and has as much talent across the board as anyone in the region. Im excited about the play of our SOPH QB Terell, he looked good against Eagles Landing throwing 3TDs. He going against a much better defense than he saw last week. As far as Sandy Creek- Stockbridge goes, great run this year by Stockbridge. I doubted them most of the year, but they beat us and are 8-1 like MHC Tiger predicted. But SR night at the Creek? No dice, Sandy Creek big. GO EAGLES LETS TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS

C’mon C-Town…Give us a lil love. it wont be big! I hope..lol Eastside adn henry will also be a good game. moody is a beast. i have told you all all along that two of the best QB’s in state are in our region. and they dont have star recievers. moodys got hurt and prunty just doesnt have any. And yes Sc fans/. cole garvin doesnt even compare! if you lined those two (moody and Prunty next to cole you would think he is the towel boy) In SC system he is thriving. big o-line, great running game, owtstanding recievers. put him on henry or stockbridge and he may be JV starter. Dont forget. prunty outplayed Mr. all AAA QB from last year. we had to win until an outstanding interception. he misses that play and we are up 3 possessions with 5 min to go. So keep talking chit SC fans…you better be pumping your kids up at the dinner table to not take them tigers lightly, or there will be a lot of tears on senior night!

stop making excuses for pius they have been beating teams by a big margin all year and beat Grady pretty good the week before with the same quarterback. so dont say they got injuries. They thought they were going to beat Washington just like they beat the rest of the teams they’ve played. All i know is the won’t make it far in the playoffs…………

@TheRunningCreek..Are you serious. Our B back from last year did not play much in the Drew game this year but just ask the rest of the teams about him. If he played his rightful position in the Drew game it would have been a different ball game. He is averaging 9.4 yards a carry and is a beast. That is with all teams stacking the box. you stack the Box he will run to the outside if you spread the defense he will run between the tackles. just ask C-Town what #9 did and will do against SC. In fact he had 100 rds rushing against Jackson in the second half and had more rushing yards then eastside had in the whole game. Trust when I tell you he is at the top of SC scouting report!!! I also saw you play eastside and your so called elite players were shut down by Eastsides Corners. I was there and do not blame it on the fact that your starting running back did not play. In fact it was not your elite two receivers who caught the running TD!!!!!
In the past two years we have scored more points then any team has scored against SC. They have problems with the triple option. In fact you guys should give us props for preparing you for the championship game against Carrollton last year. they run a similar offense. Get off your soap box as this year SC is due for an upset, whether it is by the SHS tigers or not an upset is coming this year.
