Mays could move the ball plenty between the end zones. But due to a lot of penalties and a little misfortune, it was those pesky points that eluded the Raiders.
Led by quarterback Myles Willis’s game-high 155 rushing yards, Marist put together long plays and long drives while stiffening just enough on defense to win 24-0 and lock down the No. 2 seed in Region 6-AAAA. It’s the first time Mays has been shut out since a 15-0 loss to Westlake on Oct. 18, 2002.
Down 16-0, Mays (7-2, 7-2 in Region 6-AAAA) had a chance to get back into the game, marching from its own 20 to have a first down on the Marist 15-yard line with just seconds left in the first half, thanks in large part to a dropped snap that punter John Blasingame ran 29 yards for a first down earlier in the drive.
Receiver Chad Alexander caught a pass to the 9 with 4 seconds left, but the Raiders couldn’t get off another play as time expired in the half.
When Mays came back out for the second half, the Raiders didn’t seem the same, going backward on the opening drive that eventually ended in a Marist safety.
Suddenly, in what had looked like it might be anybody’s game, Marist (8-1, 8-1) had made a statement, and Mays had fallen back.
“The was a big momentum swing for us right there, to keep them out of the end zone,” Marist coach Alan Chadwick said. “I was disappointed when we fumbled in the end zone and they got it and marched down the field, but we came up with a stop. We went down and scored after that. That was pretty much it.”
While Mays was struggling to take advantage of what opportunities it had, Marist just kept running the ball up and down the field.
The Eagles only punted once – it was blocked – and were otherwise only stopped by their own turnovers. They amassed nearly 400 rushing yards on the night, getting at least 45 yards from four players, with Jason Morris contributing 80 and two scores, William Curran posting 47 and Gray King gaining 45.
It all didn’t amount to a ton of points on a penalty- and turnover-plagued night – sparked in large part by the steady rain that fell for much of the evening – but it was plenty to win this one.
“We knew the rain was going to hurt them more than us,” said Willis, referring to his team’s penchant for the running game while Mays leans on the pass far more often. “We knew we had the strength to pound the ball all night, and they didn’t. We just stuck to the game plan.”
Mays 0 0 0 0 – 0
Marist 3 13 2 6 – 24
Marist – Austin Hardin 29 FG
Marist – Jason Morris 8 run (run failed)
Marist – Myles Willis 49 run (Hardin kick)
Marist – Steven Wallace safety
Marist – Morris 2 run (run failed)

Mays: On the play immediately b4 halftime…had it been the other way around, Chadwick and company would have stormed the field so your concern should not be minimized by them. I witnessed Marist fans throw cups and trash from the stands in Habersham one Friday night a few years ago when they didn’t like the reffing, so that crowd is certainly not the standard of telling other fans how to act. The little, short coach from Marist with the burgundy cap is not a very good sport, either, and some of his antics last night should have been called by the refs. That being said, you have to overcome the negative and not let what you can’t control get in your head. I’m not going to say your team is undisciplined, either. Mays lost to Marist last night. Period. Complaints about refs should go to the GHSA and if your coach feels there were some really bad calls, he knows how to take care of that. Marist won the game 24-0. Complaining won’t change that at all. The best you can do is move on and focus on next week. Good luck to all Region 6 teams. Region 8 is working hard and we want to be the last one standing…but I think Northside Eagles might have a little say in that, too.

@mays — LOL! — the “flag” that was picked up was a yellow towel one of the players was wearing! Don’t make it about the race of the officials. Mays got beat by a better team. Period. Just like last year at your stadium. If all you do is complain about officiating and rain, then you got nothing.

@Mays:
Your points have no validity. No penalty flag was ever waved off. At one point in the first half, a Marist player’s yellow towel had fallen on the field, and that’s probably what you were thinking about. It was not a penalty flag. It was a towel. If it was waved off, then the ref would have picked it up and waved it in the air…which didn’t happen (the towel was tossed to the sideline). And never did a single official instruct a Marist player to back up because he was offsides. And as for Marist fans holding the sideline markers, give me an example of when they told the players what play Mays was running…you can’t. The only way a Marist fan could tell the players what play was being run is if Mays calls their plays “Pass #1″ or “Run #4.” Aside from the fact that they can’t even speak to the players, there is no way a fan can decipher numbers and tell the players what the play is. Accept the fact that y’all are undisciplined, and accept the fact that Marist is a better team.

@ MaysFan…
TICK…TICK…TICK…THUMP!!!—> MARIST 24 / MAYS 0!!!
Stop “whining about ‘refs”, “bad calls”, and “homefield advantage”…
Ya got WHIPPED…by a BETTER team…MAN UP! Admit it!
Go back and reread all the EAST PAULDING posters last week after our game with POPE…
The EAST / POPE game was a dog fight and cam down to the last 30+ seconds, and EAST was playing with both the 1st and 2ds string QB out as well as several other key starters out…but while we COMMENTED on this fact NO ONE was claiming this was WHY POPE won. Of course if made a difference on the game, Would EAST have won had they been playing the whole game…MAYBE…would the outcome have been different / closer?…PROBABLY…BUT the bottome line is EAST lost…AT HOME for the first time since 09!!…and POPE WON the game!!! Give credit where credits due!!!
If MAYS faces POPE in the playoffs get ready, because their QB FROST is the REAL DEAL…he is fast, makes good quick decisions on when to throw, when to run and when to THROW THE BALL AWAY! He will beat you and beat you BAD! He absoutely took apart a really good EAST “D” that had not been that pushed around all year!
But as others have pointed out you have ALWAYS looked for and had excuses whenever needed (usually after a MAYS lost!) so I don’t expect this to change…
TICK…TICK…TICK…BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!
GO RAIDERS!!! 2011 —> ON TO THE DOME TOUR!!!

@Mays fan:
Good luck to Mays in the play-offs, represent R6, 4A well. You have a good team, and a decent coaching staff. Complaining about the Refs, and the rain can not reverse last night. Marist, Tucker, and SWD have maintained good programs for a while, learn from them and keep it moving. Remember a good running game and a solid defense wins Championships.

We can agree to disagree about the game, coaches and refs. The bottom line is Mays lost to Marist, we have to move forward.
@CannonRules- it seems as you are on here to get under my skin about my team but it doesn’t work…actually, I love guys like you. As I said to RealisticEPFan (if your not the same person), get those QB’s right before playoffs as you may be one or two and done.

The Hill is typical stuck on media, insignificant, and never been much as an athelete. The typical 2nd guesser. Its a sad day in your life to have only a blog ,for what comes through your tiny grey matter, to count for something. Your Mays experience must have been mighty horric as a child. Lame, no scrapping , not popular? Or you just didnt turn out to be what your classmates thought? Or thats just what you turned out to be.., INSignificant.

@AAAA was on the side line and heard it. The official on the side was pathetic in that he let it happen. None the less. The playoffs are nearing and lets see how they turn out. For your sake I hope you have home games. Otherwise on the road loss brings out that nasty war eagle personality inherent in that silver spoon elite group. Good luck!

SWD clinched a playoff spot with their 6th shut-out of the season. 25-0 over Miller Grove. Good win for the Panthers. SWD beat MG soundly at all phases of the game. So I guess there won’t be anymore SWD/Miller Grove comparisons. Who am I kidding; we are blogging on the AJC.

I have watched all the 5AAAA teams play this season and not to take anything away from POPE but the team you dont want to play from 5AAAA north is E.P If they win there playins then the top teams will be POPE -E-P – KELL – SPRAYBERRY. I love my jackets but kell and sprayberry arent the teams POPE and E.p are. Both have well balanced offenses and good def. were as kell has to depend on the run and sprayberry the pass. But first they must win there playins which could be tuff for kel and sprayberry

Sounds like most people predict the following first round playoff match-ups between regions 5 and 6:
Sprayberry at Tucker
Kell at Marist
SWD at East Paulding
Mays at Pope
Still another week to go before the playoffs, so these match-ups could change depending on region 5 play-in games and SWD /Mays final seedings. Looks like good games across the board.
