AAAAA blog: Five region titles can be decided Friday

Several region titles can be decided Friday in Class AAAAA. Here’s a region-by-region look –

• Coffee (5-4, 2-1) can win Region 1 with a victory Friday over Colquitt County (7-1, 2-0). If Colquitt wins, the region title will be decided when Colquitt plays at Valdosta (7-2, 2-1) on Nov. 4. Colquitt is heavily favored, having routed Lowndes, which routed Coffee last week. Perhaps more interesting is the Lowndes-Tift County game Friday. Lowndes, ranked No. 3 in preseason, didn’t expect to be playing a must-win game in October. The loser is out of the state playoffs.
• Stephenson and M.L. King, both 8-0 overall and 5-0 in Region 2, will play for the region title on Nov. 4 – if Stephenson takes care of Newnan (5-3, 4-1) on Friday. In many ways, Stephenson-MLK could be the most hyped game of the regular season.
• Camden County has clinched its 11th straight title in Region 3-AAAAA.
• In Region 4, Hillgrove (8-0) can clinch its first-ever region title with a victory over Kennesaw Mountain (0-8).
• Walton (8-0, 4-0) and Marietta (4-4, 4-0) are playing for the Region 5 title at Walton on Friday. Walton is ranked No.6, but Marietta has won four straight games. A region title by Marietta would be more surprising than even a Coffee region title.
• Alpharetta (7-1, 4-0) can clinch its first region title in its history in Region 6 with a victory over Centennial (4-4, 3-1). A Centennial victory gives West Forsyth (8-1, 4-1) an opening and favorable position in tiebreakers.
• Region 7 will be decided Nov. 4, when North Gwinnett plays Peachtree Ridge. Both are 7-1 overall, 5-1 in region play.
• Grayson can clinch its third Region 8 title in four seasons with a victory over Brookwood. A Brookwood victory likely would create a three-way tie (Grayson, Brookwood and Dacula) that wouldn’t be settled until the final weekend of the season. Though Brookwood (6-2) is the defending Class AAAAA champion, Grayson (8-0) is heavily favored, ranked No. 2 in AAAAA and No. 5 nationally by USA Today.

Everyone needs to come out and support the kids on both teams at Jardine Stadium in Douglas,GA this Friday night at 8:00pm when Coffee plays Colquitt Co in the Region 1-AAAAA Championship game, both teams where underdogs coming into this season and both teams have fought back to play in the Region 1-AAAAA Championship game. I am a Coffee fan, but Good Luck to both teams, they both deserve this one. It should be a great game. Go Trojans!!!

Coffee Trojan#44, What was your opinion of the officiating when Valdosta played in Douglas 2 weeks ago?

@DostaDawg,

The officiating was ok, I know what you are thinking and I don’t blame you, 19 penalties and 9 roughing the passer penalties, But Valdosta did commit the penalties, Coffee’s QB is also a RB and in the Coffee/Valdosta game Coffee’s QB would run the ball to the sideline and when the Valdosta defense went to hit him he would throw the ball and draw the late hit penaltie. It was good officiating but funny. LOL

Colquitt is a tough team to beat but Coffee has good chance against them. It should be a great game!

@AViking Fan,

Good luck tomorrow, but I am pulling for Tift Co in a way, they have not been to the playoffs in a long time now, it would be a huge win for Tift. Lowndes has a great team and go’s to the playoffs every year, it would not hurt to let Tift Co go 1 year.

Both North Gwinnett and Peachtree Ridge are undefeated in Region play right now. PR has more of a chance to lose Friday playing Mill Creek. They are a very good team and could beat Peachtree Ridge.
North Gwinnett will make history next Friday beating PR and 3rd Straight Region Title.Mill Creek would be region champ if they played in Region 6.

Has Colquitt improved any in the sportsmanship department ? Or are they still talking thrash and collecting personal foul penalties ? My son’s team played them this year.

This will be a tough game for colquitt. I think the pack will win by a field goal. It want be a packer blow out like some are predicting. I do believe that the pack will win the region championship. Coffee will be tough.

@NG17, please keep underestimating Peachtree Ridge. Every opponent does. See you on November 4th, 2011. The PTR offense everyone saw last year is history! PTR Defense is in rare form! PTR young LB have figured the game out. I forgot to mention our kicker. We are hitting out stride at the right time.

@ Valdosta-Lowndes Co. (28 State Titles) , can’t believe all the hyped about Lowndes being such a state championship team, is fighting for their lives and can actually not make the playoff with a loss to Tift Co.! Stephenson & MLK will be playing for the 1 & 2 spot in region 2AAAAA–not discrediting Newnan and East Coweta… Go region 2AAAAA

@ltymp – I hope so. Earlier in the year, it seemed they had a lot of personal fouls but I do not remember the exact reasons. They seem to be less in the last few games. Personal fouls are a pet peeve of mine regardless of who started what. They should just suspend personal foul offenders for 4 quarters. That would reduce the number overall.

Ought to be a good game tomorrow.

Appears I could that time.

I’m not quite as confident as Coffee Trojan#44 though I do feel if our big offensive line will pay attention and follow through on their blocks that we have a very good chance of winning the region. @DostaDawg One of your defensive backs was responsible for about 60 yards of the Wildcat penalties. He just would not quit mouthing off at the officials. My gut tells me that Colquitt is going to win out the region though. Even if the teams were evenly matched, (Which I don’t feel they are), The fact that the Packers have had two weeks to get ready for us should be a big positive in their favor. I don’t think many teams can give Probst two weeks to prepare and expect to feel good at the end of the night. Never can tell though. Go Trojans!!!

Anything can happen……..Look at the Warner Robins game. The Packers were not disciplined and had 140 yards in penalties, and got away from the balanced offense. If Coffee provokes the Packers, (Lowdnes tried it also, didn’t work) then Coffee might have a chance, but my gut tells me that the Packers will roll in this one. This is a hungry team and they want to make a statement against Coffee and Valdosta. When this Packer team is firing on all cylinders then they can dominant.

@Jab… Yes, we are fighting for a playoff spot. But, anything can happen after the regular season. I think MLK & Stephenson will be a battle with MLK winning the war!! I still believe Lowndes will be the best 3rd or 4th seed heading into the playoffs. ( If Lowndes defeats Tifton )

there’s a big story coming on one of the refs in that valdosta/coffee game.he tossed many calls in that game manly at the coaches on the sideline for asking him what the call was and who it was on.
the big blown call was the pf on coffee on valdosta’s qb on the valdosta’s 28 yd line and the coffee player who was on the 7 yd line returning the fumble awarded a td. which turned out to be the difference in the game.we have this on film since it was right in front of a person filming for wildcat tradition on valdosta’ 30 yd line.our camera angle from the booth clearly shows the coffee player was no where near scoring on the play.the ball should have been put on the valdosta 43 yd 1st down coffee.
we’ve moved on,that ref shouldnt be allowed to call a 5 yr old flag fb game at a boys club.he’s that incompetent.we’re just making sure he never calls another game valdosta is in and i think we’ll get that ruling.

Jab I didn’t realize Lowndes was the overhyped team as I thought that was some team that keeps proclaiming they have enough talent to be God’s gift of a football team for all of man kind. I think you know who “that” over hyped team is. And yes you are hoping Tift wins because your worst nightmare would be to get Lowndes in the first round of the playoffs.

Coffee Trojan 44 here is my prediction. Colquit will exceed 400 yards of offense because they will run over you and you will not get any where near their qback when he goes back to throw. They will not let your “one” speedy back hardly ever get to touch the ball…..allah Lowndes. But when he does get that occasional chance to touch the ball you are going to find out….as Lowndes did…..that Colquit can run too. Big and fast beats just fast every day of the week.

@CoffeeTrojan#44 – I never did quite understand the ruling on the play DAGRAPVINE is talking about on the above post. Did you hear an explanation from anyone that actually was in a position to know why they ruled the way they did?

@28 state titles – I have a feeling Coffee is going to wind up 4th seed. If so I really hope Stephenson wins out. I would love for Coffee to be the team to take the long ride up north and take them in their own back yard. I agree that the region one 4th seed may have the easiest road.

Every game is big the rest of the year. Don’t take Tift lightly. Coffee won the Tift game by blocking a short field goal on the last play of the game.

GwinnettDad

7:14 pm

@CoffeeC100 – true enough about the schedule. Now, again, it isn’t Camden’s choice of who they play. I figure they’re actually at a disadvantage come playoff time because they can’t possibly stay as sharp as they might otherwise be if they were playing 1-AAAAA, or for that matter, anywhere else, including smaller schools in the south that obviously have better teams than 3-AAAAA minus Camden.

GwinnettDad

October 27th, 2011
7:16 pm

@Camden Oh Yeah – good choice on not being at the game. Who would want to go, anyway? Rather than watch some powder puff get anihilated again by Camden, it’s probably REALLY easy to find something better to do. It does, however, give you folks a home field advantage.

Camden Oh Yeah!!!

October 27th, 2011
7:21 pm

Oh I was still listening to it so I could update the scores. Was some pretty exciting moments in the first half though, and the QB from Jenkins never gave up which I definitely give him credit for. As for it being boring, of course it is and alot of us Wildcat fans would love to have a little competition during the season but it also has been nothing but beneficial to the younger wildcats who have won 5 of the 8 games on their own.

Camden Oh Yeah!!!

October 27th, 2011
7:24 pm

Lol ok that was a little confusing at the end what I meant is they young wildcats have scored enough points in 5 of the 8 games to pull off a win by themselves.

You know looking at the proposed region schedule for next year for Camden, not will change. The only team that will give Camden a run is Coffee. Camden has a winning record against all those teams, and they have more depth than those teams too. Just Saying, be prepared to hear that same weak region crap again.
@Gwinnentdad I agree with you Camden has a slight disadvantage going into the playoffs, but it could also be seen as an advantage. At least they will be rested for the first round. And to compensate for the region they schedule strong out of state programs that can test the Wildcats. And its fun for the students to be out there, especially for us Seniors becuase these are our last high school football games, gotta enjoy it while it last.
And where is the Coffee v. Colquitt game being played at?

Quinn of the Ridge

October 27th, 2011

Peachtree Ridge definitely needs to show up with our A-game tomorrow! Mill Creek is a tough opponent, and is much better than their record indicates. @NG17 That is an awfully arrogant attitude to have, I take no game for granted, and I wouldn’t count your chickens just yet, because as far as I’m concerned, North Gwinnett will not be region championship until the clock strikes 0 against PR and they have more points on the board.
