Not much a changin’ in the rankings this week as only Grady and East Paulding lost among last week’s top 10.
Grady is out, while EP stayed at #10, though EP likely blew its chance to win the region title with the loss to Pope.
This week, some of the big games are Brookwood-Grayson, Brooks County-Fitzgerald, Marist-Mays & North Oconee-Elbert County.

@squirrell …without some serious losing within the current top ten why would/should Colquitt (currently #9) LEAPFROG into the top 5. Defeating 2 UNRANKED opponents (even though region #1, Coffee 5-4, Valdosta 7-2 should count extra because?
…If Colquitt does win out & finishes 9-2 with the region #1 crown, they should definitely be in the mix and one of the odds on favorites for the state championship…

Come on cannon, EP has been around just one year less than Lovejoy. and I know that EP”s .433 winning pct. is less than desirable. 94-123-1, 49-57 at home . Only 10 winning seasons since 1991 with 1 region title gives you the audacity to express in a public blog that you would just as soon not hear from me again, well to bad, cause I am in it for the long haul. I also think that EP had 30 game losing streak from 96-99, is this true? Just because EP lost don’t take it out on me. I had nothing to do with it. I watched the game and thought it was a good football game. You just got beat by a better team. Sorry for your discontent.

I am lost enough to find that EP has only been relevant since 2006. What happened to you, Before the loss, you were a good guy that I took a liking to. Now you seem to be aggravated . Whats wrong , did you drink the wrong kool-aid. You refered to “goofy stats”. All that I quoted was fact. As far as intellegence goes I probably have forgotten more than you will ever know.First you stayed away after the loss, now you are full of venom. Is this only for me or are you mad at the world because they lost. It’s only one game , so hang in there

@sportsnut – 2006 was the beginning of the Reid era. If you would have read the Todd Holcomb story on East Paulding (not a game story) you would know this. Reid arrived here in 2006 after winning back to back State Championships. Since then EP has had a great program despite losing a LARGE number of students to North Paulding. This is about CURRENT teams not history.

@ FridayNightLightsFan…
GREAT POST! That’s EXACTLY my point…all these posters want to talk about what happened 20 years ago, 15 years ago, etc.and while tradition is fine we are talking about THIS YEAR stats and what / how a team is doing THIS YEAR!
@ sportsnut…
FIRST…I have been posting in here since 2006…WIN or LOSE (although EAST does mostly WIN!!!) and I posted as soon as I got home from the game Friday night congratulating POPE and complimenting their QB Frost.
If you want to use “RELEVANT” stats then use the current coaching staff stats! That’s the 06 forward to compare EAST. Everyone immediately jumped on EAST for losing a VERY close game that wasn’t decided until the last 33 seconds when in fact this was the FIRST loss this year and the FIRST loss in “THE BONEYARD” since AAAAA WOODSTOCK beat EAST at the end of the 09 season. That’s a STAT you can post!!!
No venom here just want to see correct info put out there…
TICK…TICK…TICK…BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!

eaglenationrising — For all of your bitter criticism of region 1 and all the bragging about Northside and Warner Robins and how superior they are, do I need to remind you that Thomas County Central has won 5 state titles to Northside’s 2. Warner Robins who you call one of the “most storied” programs of all time has only won 4 titles. Lowndes in region 1 has 5 titles and Valdosta has 23. Colquitt and Bainbridge each has 1 title and Cairo has 3 titles.
You make it sound like NSWR and WR wins a title every year. I hope I don’t confuse you with FACTS. Good luck in the oplayoffs. Hopefully NSWR won’t have to play White Water again!

“If you want to use “RELEVANT” stats then use the current coaching staff stats!” OK — how do any of your staffs compare to Marist’s current head coach, Alan Chadwick: 297-52 record (all at Marist); .851 winning percentage in 27 seasons; 2 state championships, multiple runner-up and semi-final finishes; 15 region titles; never missed the playoffs. LOL!

Sportsnut – Regions 4-AAAA and 6-AAAA do not play non-region games. They play only themselves in the regular season, so there is no way to know their strength based on the regular season. We must guess, or have bias. Because R4 went 0-4 in the playoffs last year, the guess/bias is that R4 is not that strong. Based on that 0-4 and other historical info, there’s no credibility in putting Lovejoy much higher than they are. Come playoff time, we’ll see. In 2009, R8 had the same issue but sent 3 teams to the QF, 2 to the SF and 1 to the final. They proved us wrong. But the burden of proof is on Lovejoy and R4, the benefit of doubt w/ Marist and R6.

‘’ Tom Holcomb please explain in detail why NHSWR is not #1 in the polls? They have and will beat Tucker again if need be.’’
I’ll answer this one for Tom. I didn’t realize Northside had beaten Tucker this year, but if they have, then they definitely should be #1.
But there is no separation betwen NSWR & Tucker. The answer to your question would be that somebody has to be #1, somebody #2.

‘’ Where will Colquitt be ranked IF they dominate the last two regular season games against Coffee & Valdosta?’’
Guess that depends on how other teams do. I’d rather wait until they dominate those teams first.

‘’Just because East Paulding beats everyone by a larger amount, doesn’t make them the better team.
East Paulding can beat everyone by 100 and Pope by 1 but a win is a win.’’
I agree w/ you. But you left out one key piece of information – Pope also lost. If Pope was undefeated, then they’d be ranked higher. But both are 7-1, so I look at body of work. You prefer to look at head-to-head. That’s fine. But I like my way better.

‘’Using your logic, you defeat your own arguement by saying you rate teams by how they perform and not how they could have performed. Sure EP is a few plays from being 8-0 and Pope is a few plays from being 4-4, but neither is. Both are 7-1, and Pope performed better on Friday.’’
I don’t think you’re using my logic. It’s how they perform over the season, not one particular FRI night. There’s no doubt in the mind of anyone who is being objective that East Paulding has performed better over the course of the season than Pope.

If you want to go that route, Coach Al Hughes has been at Lovejoy since 2001 and we went 10-2 that year . The reason is the same, a new school came 5 miles away, Mundy’s Mill. We have been down for five years. Now we are back and poised to make a deep run . From 96-04, we were 75-27 before the new school. Our overall record is 135-97-0. a winning pct. of .582. So coaching means a great deal to the program, it is still the kids who have to play the games. Those are the facts and regardless of how you feel, the numbers won’t change. When I finish writing this, Lovejoy will still have the best D in AAAA.

Currently, Lovejoy is ranked anywhere from 4th in the MaxPreps to #10 in the ga.preps/coaches poll.We did finish last year at 10-1. So lets us talk now and not the past.Correct info; 3.625 ppg. allowed, 34.87 ppg. scored, 12 blocked punts(leads state) 3 blocked extra points, 7 fumbles returned for touchdowns(leads state) oh yea., that 3.625 also leads state. These numbers will only get better as long as we keep people out of the endzone. Is that enough CORRECT INFO for you?

The fact that Lovejoy has 12 blocked punts tells me more about the inferior quality of the teams you play than about the quality of Lovejoy. Seriously, is there any other region that has allowed that many blocked punts all season?

@sportsnut — So we can understand your perspective more — Who was a better team last year: 10-1 Lovejoy or 8-4 Glynn Academy? I mean, Lovejoy had more wins and went undefeated in its region. Had great defensive stats in 2010. Glynn limped into the playoffs with a sorry 7-3 record. So, who was better?

Why can’t the D stand for what it is? If you want to look at it that way, but the way I see it is that the D comes after you, not that the teams we play are of low quality. There is no other region that has this type D. Last year I think that as a whole, we were better but on that night , Glynn was. Not going to make any excuses. This year , the teams motto is ” NO EXCUSES, JUST UNFINISHED BUSINESS. Don’t forget that last year, the champ came through that bracket. We lost to Glynn, Glynn lost to Dutchtown, Dutchtown lost to Chattahoochee.

Hooch did not come through your bracket last year. The team that lost to Hooch in the 3d round came through your bracket. (I know, because our guys lost to Hooch in the 2d round last year!) Jeeze.

@ware Co.2011,there does not seem to be many AAAAA on your record. Coffee, Lowndes, Pebblebrook, and Walton are the only current AAAAA schools that are showing. At times over the last 10 years. we have been in the AAAAA class and i see you played Banneker, North Clayton , which are currently in our region. So what is your point? You should not need to play up to get prepared. This should be ready regardless of who you play. We do play a 10 game region schedule and we are 8-0 in it. We will not make excuses for region and play who they put on the schedule. Good for you that you have that extra push, some teams need that !

WarEagle, did not mean that they were in the same bracket from the beggining, just that the champ came through and took care of the teams that took care of us.

Not claiming to be better than anyone. Your comments on who you play makes it seem as though you are better because of games against a higher class. Are all your games region games? If not can you tell me who you played out of region?

Just looked at your region and it seems ghsa had to give you guys a little competition given the teams in your region. There is you on one side and Statesboro on the other. You may need the added push with that region. That brings to mind that thing about the weakest region in AAAA. From the looks of it, there is no way 4AAAA is the weakest ! ! ! Agape Christain, pierce Co, Brunswick, Liberty Co, Richmond Hill and Wayne CO. This is not to say those teams are not any good, but you have 3 or 4 teams that barely have a winning record. Good luck in the playoffs. I hope the playing up helps.

@4AReg6Fan…So your saying Region 4 AAAA is the best football region in AAAA? I just want to hear why you think so, considering half of your region will finish with losing records and the only teams that ever make noise in the playoffs are Tucker and Marist (the only two people actually take seriously) and sometimes Mays/ SWD.

Hot chocolate — yes.
As to @ Region 4AAAA…? — will let you figure out the math yourself re having losing teams in a region that plays no non-region games. As for region 6AAAA teams, I don’t agree with you that we only have 2 teams taken seriously each year, but I suppose 2 is better than none!

@ Hey Now…/…WarEagle…
Nope I knew what MARIST had done…remember they stopped EAST…COLD!…in the Dome back in 06…MARIST 27 / EAST 7 (and it wasn’t that close!…LOL!) That was the year of MARIST “White Buffalo” if you remember.
My post was directed more at Sportsnut and his stat going all the way back to 91 or so and I was pointing out that things change. We need to look at what teams are doning as they move FORWARD!!!

@Region 4 AAAA…? – Well, it seems that sportsnut has now got a region fan (LOL)…it will be good to hear from another region 4 fans’ prospective. Sorry to get back to you late, but had these deadlines to deal with at work. To answer your question regarding the second sentence of my tag line, it comes down to one word CONSISTENCE when it really counts, during playoffs. There’s no secret on region 6’s performance in the number of teams and the number of times, they have played games 11 – 15…Statics will show that region 6 is # 1 in this regards. I based this on looking at performance over the last 5 – 10 years, there’s no need to go back farther, so many variables change in HS football (new schools coming on line, new coaches, realignment, etc). If we can agree, in HS football, region competition prepares teams for deep runs in the playoffs, programs like Tucker, Marist, SWD and Mays, weekly line-up against 3-4 other region opponents that are just small steps away from experiencing games 11 – 15…it’s not the quality or quantity of athletes, in most cases, it’s their overall team leadership. It appears that region 4, may just be ready to make some new history, assuming realignment doesn’t change the current picture, which is almost a certain for region 6. Go .500 in the first round of the 2011 playoffs and come back to compare!!!!

NHSWR has beaten Tucker in the past and I still do not understand why they are number one. It should be stats to determine who is number 1. Not who has beaten the number one team or not. The best should be at least tied for first.

I thought Todd did answer the question — Tucker started No. 1 and NSWR started number 2, and not much has changed during the year to justify changing the initial ranking of them. Practically interchangeable at this point. Does not really seem to matter. Tucker and NSWR have played once before, in 2007 — you’re not suggesting that should be the basis for ranking teams, I hope.

@hoosier – Must of the Tucker fans do not care about the poll rankings, we tend to use the term “WAS #1” vs “IS # 1”. Was # 1 – states, at the end of the season, after CHAMPIONS have been crowned, WHERE does your team resides in the polls. Is # 1 – states, just for this giving WEEK and that can change on any giving Friday night. If being # 1 on Oct 26th will make you happy and comfortable, then I will petition to Todd Holcomb and any others at the AJC and other local HS football polls, to make NSWR # 1 and we at Tucker, will maintain our focus on the 2011 prize – 2011 4A STATE CHAMPION, and the…Was # 1 part of my explanation.

NHSWR just does not get any recognition. They only get it when they win a state title or the season after winning one. I think the whipping of TCC and others just does not seem to matter to the polls.

How many teams get ranked #2 in preseason, well ahead of the defending state champion, after going out in the first round the previous season? That’s a good show of respect, IMO.
