If I am reading this correctly, you have Newnan listed as “Rams”. They are “Cougars” and proud of it.

What will it take for Langston Hughes to at least become competitive in football and then go to the next level?

@estabon the first step is when all the players stop transferring to creekside and other area school and believe me they do not need to be a 5 a school with that small team they have

@Westlakefootball,

You are right that there are a high number of kids who should be at Langston but go to Creekside or Westlake instead. The bigger issue right now though is the coaching staff. They are hardworking and care about the kids but, it is obvious they don’t have an identity or system on offense and the are too passive on defense. Is there a law against bllitzing?

In the 3rd year of a program we ought to be able to know what their identity and philosophy is. Stephenson is a Wing T running team. MLK is a spread passing team. Newnan is a spread run team. What is Langston? Shouldn’t we be able to tell in year 3?

I agree that having players transfer to Creekside and Westlake is a problem but not the major one. The major problem is that the coaching staff is having to play kids on the Varsity level that should really be playing and developing on the 9th grade and JV level. With the lack of Middle School football in South Fulton, most of these players, especially the lineman, 1st time playing organized football is when they arrive on campus in the 9th grade. Let’s give the coaching staff some time. It’s kinda hard developing a style of play when you are still trying to teach your kids how to get into a proper stance.

@The Truth,

Thats a copout as many of these kids have played Rec ball throughout midle school. I do agree we lack size and depth on the OL/DL but we have skill kids as talented as the other region teams. I am all for giving the staff a chance. To the staffs credit, the kids are competing better this year and they put in long hours.

My issue is there is no scheme or organization to their offense. The other teams are routinely calling out all of their plays presnap. That is a huge problem.

@LHHS Observer

Not a copout, but a fact. Football games are won in the trenches. Most of the kids on the offensive line were to big to play rec ball. If they did have an opportunity to play rec ball, and played on the line, they are now trying to play the position on the Varsity level weighting 180lbs. I don;t care who you are, you are not going to have much success, in this region, with 180lb lineman. I do agree with you when it comes to the skill players. There is a lot of talent there, but they are young.

I’ve had an opportunity to watched them play their first 3 games. From what I could see, it looked like their offensive scheme was a short quick passing game to take advantage of their skill players and try to take the pressure off of their line. If I can see this from the stands, I’m quite sure opposing coaches can see this on the film. From what I am hearing, teams have taken this away from them and they haven’t found anything else that will work. Let’s see if they make any adjustments the next couple of weeks.

Langston Hughes will be fine. Let the coaching staff have more time. You have good athletes and with time will be kicking butt. Your kids fly to the ball. Time will come. Good luck and you have some good ball players.

All you good folks have some very valid points. But the one thing I can’t do is agree with giving the coaches more time. I have witnessed NO growth in the mental aspect of the LHHS players. All the GD’s, S.O.B.’s, Sorry A**’s, F’s, and S’s directed at the kids is very close to getting the coaches a**’s whupped.

I agree withh LHHS Observer about the offense having no identity. More worrisome to me is the lack of general football knowledge. Who in the universe runs a sweep from your own 1/2 yard line? I guess the same person that calls an option pitch the next play. The bet in the stands was 2 pts (safety) or 2 yard gain. I guess we all lost because the results were 0 gain, 0 gain, fumbled pitch and Newnan Touchdown.

LHHS coaches….really hope you read these because we are not proud of the product you are putting on the field or the developmaent of these young kids. Here is a question, if we are suffering from losing kids now, how bad do you think its going to be going forward? EXTREMELY DIFFICULT!!

I Agree with everyone … but the offense play calling sucks!!! he calls the same play over and over and it is very predictable Coach Cannon NEEDS A NEW OC COACH ASAP!!! IT’S A SHAME your denfense stays on the field because your offense not performing. They should consider playing some of these kids both ways hmm.. think about it !!

really Langston Hughes is a good team put creekside or any other team in that division that creekside is in they will look as bad too and I hate how yall blame the coaches when it really is just a lack of talent yall dont know that Coach Cannon and coach minnis coaches at wlhs and lhhs both coached a team to a championship game lost at the last second this was back in 2005 n Florida ……………..woooow im sorry this is point less but since i wrote this imma post it but yea its pointless

FIRST OFF THE WHOLE COACHING STAFF IS A JOKE !!!!!! I DISAGREE WITH THE LACK OF TALENT SUGGESTION BECAUSE THEY HAD A DB WHO HAD NO PLAY TIME AT LHHS AND IS NOW STARTING AT MLK #SMARTMOVE THE OFFENSE CAN’T MOVE THE BALL TO SAVE THERE LIVES SO THE DEFENSE IS ON E BY SECOND HALF. THERE ARE NO TRAP PLAYS WHATSOEVER THE HEAD COACH DOES NOTHING BUT CURSE AND SHOW HOW MUCH OF A SORRY COACH HE IS THE DB(s) CAN’T GO MAN BECAUSE THEY ARE ETHIER TO SOFT TO SLOW OR TO SMALL THE LINEBACKERS ARE OK BUT CAN USE A LITTLE MORE BEEF AND DEPTH. THE ENDS ACT LIKE CONTAINMENT ASSIGNMENTS IS ROCKET SCIENCE. THE DT(s) AREN’T VERY BIG EXCEPT FOR TWO OR THREE. COACH CANNON NEEDS TO EITHER BE FIRED , OR DO SOME SOUL SEARCHING BECAUSE THIS IS NOT LOOKING GOOD FOR THE UPCOMING SENOIRS AND JUNIORS. EAST COWETA WILL BEAT YOU NEXT WEEK……….YOU GUYS WILL DECIDE EITHER IF IT’S A CLOSE ONE OR A LANDSLIDE . BUT IT ALL STARTS WITH COACHING , AND RIGHT NOW LHHS COACHING STAFF SHOULD BE COACHING RECREATION FOOTBALL. COACH WHELLER SHOULD START HANGING UP NOW HIRING SIGNS…

@TheTruth, the OL/DL kids played rec ball in an unlimited weight league since 2004. Fairburn, Welcome All, Old National & Ben Hill are all unlimited for lineman. Kids went to other schools from fear of losing or not being developed. The most devastating loss in 2010 was Westlake. We needed to be competitive and we weren’t.

My guess is we MIGHT win the Luella game and that’s it. We better be more competitive the rest of the season or more underclassmen will defect. Next season they need to be in the playoffs or show significant signs of improvement. We should not struggle thi much on offense.

I think langston hughes will be ok in another year or so because those kids have been playing varsity since they were in the 9th grade so in due time they will be just fine, i dont know much about the coaching staff but i do know that the team does has some talented kids over there so i suggest that they keep working hard and it will eventually pay off!!!! Go Panthers

i went to Langston Hughes the first to years and played football and all i have to say is the coaching is good the talent is good the support sucks…even from teachers and parents. Both years i played we had the talent just not the size…i believe that Langston has no right be in 5a. The team is small and lacks experience. My 9th and 10th grade year i played at Creekside high school and played 9th and JV football….at Langston you have 9th and 10th graders play varsity….all i can say is give it time know one starts off great

Wow….so many degrading comments, but so few suggestions…..You really want to build up a team, a school, a community and this is what you give. I think there should be a collaboration in support. There has been no support, not even from the school itself to encourage the team and the coaching staff of LH. It’s obvious when you go to the games. You can’t blame the coaching staff, or the football team for everything. Yes there is always room for improvement in the coaching staff and the team, but you disgruntled bystanders do better to support and build confidence and stop pitching a fit. You can ask any of those kids on the football team and I am sure they will tell you the coaching staff makes them work hard. It’s confidence and support they lack…Give me a break!

We MURKED Westlake… by 22… Newnan Barley won and our defense was on point. offense needed alot of help. and there are a couple of top juniors in georgia playing for langston hughes. The offense needs god , and the defense just needs to keep working and they’ll be just fine.
