McFerrin one victory away from 300 in Georgia

T. McFerrin is moving in on a milestone that he didn’t realize until notified last week. He can become the ninth coach to win 300 games in Georgia today when his Jefferson team plays North Oconee.

McFerrin’s overall coaching record is 323-98-4, with 24 of those victories coming in Tennessee, his home state.

“This is a tough game to try to get it on because this is the best we’ve played by far,” McFerrin said of North Oconee, which has a 4-0 record, same as Jefferson’s.

McFerrin’s 323 victories overall rank fifth among coaches who have spent most of their careers in Georgia. It is second among active coaches behind Lincoln County’s Larry Campbell.

“There are a lot of great coaches in Georgia that I have respect for who don’t have 300,” McFerrin said, “so it would be an honor.”

Here are the 10 coaches with the most victories in Georgia:

452 – Larry Campbell, Lincoln County

353 – Robert Davis, Warner Robins, Westside (Macon)

346 – Dan Pitts, Mary Persons

323 – Luther Welsh, Thomson, Screven County, Greene County, Camden County, Dougherty, Warrenton

317 – Bill Chappell, Dalton

315 – Wayman Creel, Northside (Atlanta), Lakeside (Atlanta), Westminster

314 – Dwight Hochstetler, Greenville, Bowdon

302 – Nick Hyder, West Rome, Valdosta

299 – T. McFerrin, Jefferson, South Gwinnett, Elberrt County, Tucker, SE Whitfield, Peachtree, Forest Park, Lithonia

295 – Rodney Walker, Mary Persons, Sandy Creek, Peach County, Stephens County, Cartersville, West Rome, Habersham Central, Gilmer, Villa Rica

Good luck to Coach McFerrin. Note that Alan Chadwick of Marist is at 294 wins and hopefully will add to that total this year!

Good point, WarEagle. We’ve had just eight coaches in history win 300 games in Georgia, and it’s possible that three will hit the milestone this season in McFerrin, Walker and Chadwick. I’ll also point out that Walker has 297 wins overall. He had two in another state. And finally, Chadwick can become the fourth coach to win 300 games at one Georgia school.

Todd — I’m guessing that Chadwick will get to 300 wins faster than anyone in GA history, except maybe Larry Campbell. Is that correct? Chadwick has at least 10 fewer seasons as head coach than Walker and McFerrin.

Coach McFerrin has specialized in coming to programs that have forgotten how to win and turned them around, producing great players in the process. Never inherited anything. He has had to rebuild at every school where he’s gone..And he was retired for 10 years before going back to Jefferson. All mentioned are great coaches, but McFerrin is special.

Having played with Chris on the 1977 Peachtree HS team that went from 1-9 the year before to 10-1-1 and the second round of the state playoffs in Coach McFerrin’s first season, I absolutely agree. A very special indeed! Best wishes, coach, for #300 and as many more as you want to go for.

Actually, the past is getting so fuzzy, I mixed up my years. Make that 1976.
