Look for Northside, Walton to prevail in big rivalry games

The most exciting week of the regular season might be next week, especially in Class AAAAA, where five of the top 10 teams will play teams that are ranked or undefeated. But if this week is the opening act, it’s a pretty good one. Look for Northside to win its cross-town war with Warner Robins, Walton to take control of Region 5-AAAAA with a victory against East Cobb rival Lassiter, and Valdosta to hand M.L. King its first loss in a non-region matchup. The top four teams in Region 1-A go head-to-head on Friday, with Brooks County and Cook remaining perfect in league play.

And congratulations go out to John Manning of Hartsfield, who was the Week 2 winner in the High School Football Pickoff contest. Manning was one of two contestants to correctly pick the winner of all 15 games and won the tiebreaker for the closest guess of the score in the Alpharetta-Northview game. Bruce McCracken of Valdosta also picked all 15 games correctly. Click here to sign up and participate in this week’s contest.

IT’S A GOOD WEEK TO HAVE OFF. I think Valdosta should win but MLK might win. If MLK can pressure Valdosta’s QB and IF MLK can move the ball and the chains, they have a good chance of winning. If it turns into a field position kind of game, Valdosta will win. They used to have a ghost (affectionately called THE GHOST OF CLEVELAND FIELD) who would rise up and make opponents fumble late, or drop a key pass, or shank a punt. But when they installed artificial turf, it seems the Ghost can’t get through it, and he appears to be gone for good. Still, I think Valdosta will win a close low scoring game on a field goal, and MLK jitters.

I also pick Walton, Northside WR, Brooks, Ware, Coffee, and Fitzgerald to win.
