Pope takes two from Hoyas

Pope proved a lot this past week with two wins over a tough Harrison squad that may be one of the top Class AAAAA teams in the state. The Greyhounds won 2-0 (25-12, 25-21) and 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 29-27). Mary Hannah Arrington finished with 14 kills, eight digs and three aces in the game. The junior leads the team with 259 kills and 44 aces this year. The Hoyas were led by Kelly Scott’s 18 assists and 10 digs. Scott leads Harrison with 508 assists this year. Pope faces Wheeler, Kell and Walker today in the Cobb County Tournament, while Harrison will face Sprayberry and Mount Paran Christian. … North Gwinnett won the Gold Bracket of the Collins Hill Classic over Peachtree Ridge. Kristina Stinson served four straight aces to clinch the victory. The junior had 38 kills in the match and was named tournament MVP. … The host Eagles won two of their three matches in the Collins Hill Classic. Senior Katherine Ahlswede posted 52 assists and 10 digs in victories over South Forsyth and Hebron.  Senior libero Sarah Stone led the Eagles on defense with 23 digs in a loss to North Gwinnett. Collins Hill is now 18-13 and will face Central Gwinnett and Buford this week. … Peachtree Ridge had a nice showing in the Collins Hill Classic with wins over Wesleyan, Berkmar and Milton. The Lions eventually lost to North Gwinnett in the Gold Bracket final of the tournament. Senior middle hitter Lucy Riddle finished the tournament with 85 assists, 36 kills, seven aces, 19 digs and nine blocks, while Lauren Greene posted 12 aces, 18 kills, nine assists and four blocks. The Lions have faltered down the stretch after winning eight of the first 10 games. Peachtree Ridge is 11-9 with matches with Shiloh, GAC, Norcross and North Gwinnett still remaining. … Norcross got to the Silver Bracket finals of the Collins Hill Classic by beating Tucker and North Forsyth. The Blue Devils were led by sophomore middle hitter Sydney Marshall who had 42 kills in the tournament. Senior setter Lauren Ranney put her teammates in great position to finish points as she posted 86 assists. The Blue Devils are 11-10 with an 0-2 area record.
