Here are five questions we might have answered this week in Class AAAAA -
Is Region 2 any good? Based on its 15-0 record against non-regions teams this year, you’d think so. But while I’d be willing to put Region 3 in the top three among AAAAA regions (with R1 and R7), let’s be honest and say R2 hasn’t put itself on the line against many like-sized opponents this year. That will change this week when Westlake travels to Colquitt County, M.L. King takes on Collins Hill and Newnan plays at Peachtre Ridge. Stephenson also plays at Tift County. Go 4-1 there and some would be willing to call R2 the best league in the state. Maybe.
Comeback team of the year: Peachtree Ridge or Newnan? Newnan fell to 7-5 last season after goint 13-1 in 2008 and 2009. Peachtree Ridge went 6-4 after finishes of 10-3 and 12-3. Hard to imagine that one of these two teams won’t have a comeback year in 2011. They’ll play Friday at Peachtree Ridge.
Which was the flash in the pan: Collins Hill or MLK? Collins Hill went 10-4 last season, its first 10-win season since 2004. MLK was only 8-4 but won its first region title since 2007. Which has staying power? MLK returned QB Jonquel Dawson, while Collins Hill’s Taylor Heinicke graduated, but it will be decided on the field, not on common sense.
Is Valdosta a contender, or rebuilding? The ‘Cats were 11-2 last season, 2-0 this season, but are unranked because of significant graduation losses (WR Malcolm Mitchell, TE Jay Rome, QB Ryan Whilden). This week’s game with Lincoln of Tallahassee should explain a lot. Lincoln won Florida’s Class 4A last season and is ranked #7 this year in 7A with some 18 starters back. Valdosta beat Lincoln 35-31 last year.
Will R6 fight back? The only Region 6 team that hasn’t been blown out this season is Centennial, which lost to a freshman QB (North Cobb) last week, and West Forsyth (2-0). West Forsyth plays this week at Etowah on Friday. (Etowah won 41-14 last season). Centennial plays a highly ranked AAA team in Carrollton. R6 favorite Roswell (0-2) plays at state-ranked Norcross. R6 needs to put up a good fight this week or R5 – the region that it’s matched against in the playoffs – will writing its ticket to the second round.
