AAAAA blog: Region 2 puts 15-0 record on line

Here are five questions we might have answered this week in Class AAAAA -

Is Region 2 any good? Based on its 15-0 record against non-regions teams this year, you’d think so. But while I’d be willing to put Region 3 in the top three among AAAAA regions (with R1 and R7), let’s be honest and say R2 hasn’t put itself on the line against many like-sized opponents this year. That will change this week when Westlake travels to Colquitt County, M.L. King takes on Collins Hill and Newnan plays at Peachtre Ridge. Stephenson also plays at Tift County. Go 4-1 there and some would be willing to call R2 the best league in the state. Maybe.

Comeback team of the year: Peachtree Ridge or Newnan? Newnan fell to 7-5 last season after goint 13-1 in 2008 and 2009. Peachtree Ridge went 6-4 after finishes of 10-3 and 12-3. Hard to imagine that one of these two teams won’t have a comeback year in 2011. They’ll play Friday at Peachtree Ridge.

Which was the flash in the pan: Collins Hill or MLK? Collins Hill went 10-4 last season, its first 10-win season since 2004. MLK was only 8-4 but won its first region title since 2007. Which has staying power? MLK returned QB Jonquel Dawson, while Collins Hill’s Taylor Heinicke graduated, but it will be decided on the field, not on common sense.

Is Valdosta a contender, or rebuilding? The ‘Cats were 11-2 last season, 2-0 this season, but are unranked because of significant graduation losses (WR Malcolm Mitchell, TE Jay Rome, QB Ryan Whilden). This week’s game with Lincoln of Tallahassee should explain a lot. Lincoln won Florida’s Class 4A last season and is ranked #7 this year in 7A with some 18 starters back. Valdosta beat Lincoln 35-31 last year.

Will R6 fight back? The only Region 6 team that hasn’t been blown out this season is Centennial, which lost to a freshman QB (North Cobb) last week, and West Forsyth (2-0). West Forsyth plays this week at Etowah on Friday. (Etowah won 41-14 last season). Centennial plays a highly ranked AAA team in Carrollton. R6 favorite Roswell (0-2) plays at state-ranked Norcross. R6 needs to put up a good fight this week or R5 – the region that it’s matched against in the playoffs – will writing its ticket to the second round.

As much as I hate to say it, Valdosta is not a contender this year….they have some young athletes, but their OL/DL is just too small….I keep saying that there glory days are over as long as they play up in 5A soon to be 6A…they are a 4A school, period.

On another note, big props to Malcolm Mitchell for representing the Cats well, he is definitely something special and I hope UGA recognizes that now.

Watch out for East Coweta in region 2AAAAA don’t count them out. They have plenty of talent and it will show this year.

I’ll go out on the limb and say Region 2AAAAA is the SEC of Georgia High School Football. Stephenson, MLKing, East Coweta, Newnan, Westlake, Newton, Luella and Hughes are some of the toughest teams in the state. The top two always seems to be Stephenson and King gets all the attention, don’t count out the rest. This is the most competitive region by far. 1AAAAA gets a lot a publicity for past actions.

Can’t wait until 6A is put together. Unfortunately, one or two of these schools will not make the cut unless they want to play up. Good luck tomorrow night 2AAAAA.

@atlspxave – please elaborate on how you believe 2-AAAAA to be the SEC of AAAAA? Past victories? State Championships? Significant victories over good teams in other regions? 15-0 this year, yes, but who have they played that you think is a playoff contender?

Funny mr.VALDOSTA-LOWNDES COUNTY..U can recall so fast how ur VALDOSTA victory over MLK was skipping right over the fact that on our first meet during the playoffs of wat was either 2008-or 09 we held the “W”..and then dare not label us not tough enuff lol wow..maybe u shudd ask s.gwinett about gettin happy wit one victory that took place last year b4 u count us out.. and clearly the subtitle said 2AAAAA perfection so apparently alot of teams in this region is doin sumthin rite..so before anybody else starts to talk mess aobut the 2AAAAA squad make sure u fare off against us first b4 drawing unneccessary conclusions… -MESSAGE FROM THE PRIDE!!

atlspxave, Mighty Lion King of MLK,
Come on man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2 AAAAA has never won anything. A lot of teams have put 2 AAAAA out of the playoffs. The SEC don’t thinkn so. Never compete year in and year out for state title. This may be the Jags first legitimate threat for a state title. That remains to be seen, thought they were going to be a few years back with Marcus Ball. Got hammered by Camden. MLK has a QB and receiver, lack defense. Newnan, always has talent, but underachieve every year. As far as the rest of the region teams, not going to happen. They will always face a #1 seed and get kicked in the head and sent home. All facts.

AAAAA has only existed for the last 11 years. Since then, here’s how the regions stack up:

Region 8-AAAAA 4
Region 3-AAAAA 3
Region 1-AAAAA 3
Region 7-AAAAA 1/2
Region 6-AAAAA 1/2
Here’s the list of how many State Titles have been won by 2-AAAAA schools since records were kept (from the Georgia High School Football Historians Association)
East Coweta 0
M.L. King 0
Newnan 0
Newton 0
Stephenson 0
Westlake 0
Luella 0
Langston Hughes 0

SEC of college football? Maybe this year, who knows? For Region 2-AAAAA, I sure hope so for them. But not including this year, the statement “SEC of Georgia High School Football” has to be among the most preposterous assertions in Georgia Football History.

@atlspxave – You are a fool, colquitt county ran thru all of those teams in the playoffs last year and the year before ( ON THE ROAD) and colquitt county was the #3 team from region 1-AAAAA! Thats says a lot, how many state titles have came from that region? No championships are given out in the first three weeks of the season. Stephenson always has talent and they never win the big games!

for the 09 comment mlk was beat by tift county at memorial stadium with mack brown that year in the play offs..atlanta teams always have talent because they get people from all over the city that shouldent be at the school to come there…but the difference is places like tifton, colquit, and lowndes have the same kids from middle school ball to high school so they trust each other and have chemistry. talent alone dont win the big game

Todd, the opinion you wrote on Valdosta is a bunch of AJC politics!!! For your info, Valdosta lost 5 starters on offense and only 5 on defense!!!!!!! The AJC has Colquitt County ranked and they lost more to graduation than any team in the state. They lost both RB. QB, 2 best WR, and the whole OL!!!!!!!!! They head into this year with a new QB( who has never played at the 5AAAAA level and still has not played a 5AAAAA team) and new RB who played JV last year. They had the worst defense in the history of high school football!!!( They brought in a new D coach and some recruits and still gave up over 400yds per game in their last 2 games. They finished 3rd in region 1AAAAA and were embarrassed in the state title game. They didn’t beat Lowndes or Valdosta last year and if you were at those games, neither was even close.

Paul Bear Bryant once said ” Respect is Earned not Given!” We here in Valdosta Wildcat nation don’t want any unproven ranking or kudos from the AJC, ESPN, USA TODAY, RIVALS.COM or any other media source. Just like the CATS in the wild, we are quietly stalking our prey!!! We put the state of Georgia on the national scene for High School football!!!!!! If you go to any other state and mention high school football in Georgia, you won’t hear the name of any Atlanta schools, you hear Valdosta High Wildcats! (Camden County High is now getting alot of media press.)!

@TITLE TOWN FAN, have you been to a Valdosta game this year? What are you talking about? The Cats only lost 2 starters on the OL and 1 on the DL from last year.

@Dosta Dog, I have been to all the games, I don’t care about how many OL/DL starters you count on your fingers…they are still small. I am as big a fan as anyone of those boys, because I work with them in the community and in the school, but my assessment is based on my perception of the truth, not what I wish to be true. I hope they do surprise me and make a good run, but tonight will tell us a lot against Lincoln, not to mention MLK, Lowndes, and Colquitt. Look at your comments, they are stuck in the past…I am talking about the present state of affairs with Valdosta football.

AMEN…….well said. Lowndes dominated colquitt last year for 3/4 of the game. it was 37-20 with 30 sec to go and we gave up a td that didnt matter. jv d was in

Colquitts most impressive win this year was against madison and it took home ref cookin and a miracle to do it. Madison had over 4oo yds of offense. tcc had a lot of yards aslo. Colquitt will find out real soon……..Oct 14th what they are made of. Lowndes will be their toughest test. Lowndes is madison on steroids!!!!!

You guys certainly havent played anyone on mceacherns level, a team lowndes should have beat. we had em on the ropes, but they came back in 4th and got us.

Lowndes and colquitt should be a great game. lowndes will be very tough to beat. we will be very seasoned by the time we play. we have to play ware and valdosta before we come to the hogpen. if lowndes is 6-1 when we come to the hogpen, then i am taking lowndes over colquitt

@TITLE TOWN, If you say my comments are stuck in the past, then you must say that for all the South Georgia 5A schools! Lowndes was the last team in 5A from south georgia to win a title and that was in 2007, which by my calculations was 5yrs ago. Colquitt in 1994 and Valdosta won in 1999 and if not for a heartbreaking dropped pass should have beaten Canden in 2003. So when you say my comments are of past tense, all our south Ga. teams are of past tense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As for your opinion on size, it has no merrit. How many championships are won because a team was bigger than the other? Colquitt County was as bigger and faster than Lowndes, Valdosta, Cook and Brookwood last year and got stomped by all 4 teams!!!!! Their DL was bigger than Madison but they gave up over 400yds rushing. Coffee is huge every year on the OL/DL and when is the last time they finished better than 4th in the region? Granted the CATS are young, but they are loaded with athletes! This team is built around speed on the defense and offense. The offensive system does not require huge OL, it is a west coast system of zone blocking and RB ability to make reads off that blocking. The defensive scheme this year is built on speed and team. If you have been to the games, you would notice how much faster this defense is than last years unit. On offense last year, we really relied on big plays from a couple of people. Defensively, we could not defend the pass of mobile QB’s!!!!!! Watch how this years team comes together more as a TEAM than as great individuals!!!

I can see that many of you guys don’t understand HS football in the state’s highest classification 2AAAAA is by far the toughest region in the state this year and it will be proven this year., These are high school kids, not college or pro! Look at your history again and see how many of these high schools have kids playing in the NFL & Divsion 1 college football, winning at state title don’t depict that your school is the best. Look at last year Brookwood came out of know where and won the state in AAAAA. Any good team can get beat during the playoffs in HS on any good night. 3 years ago Stephenson Lost to the eventual state champion 3 years in a roll. Look how many D1 & college prospects these schools from 2AAAAA are turning out each year, not to mention the citizens and good mentorship ship these guys are getting each year.. Many of you guys need to do your homework and look at the consistency that region 2AAAAA top teams are producing; it really means something to have coached kids to play ball on the D1 and or others levels and become good citizens… Lastly, stop hating on these kids and get a life…

JAB, when 2-AAAAA wins something, or even gets to the finals, that’ll be something to crow about. So far, 2-AAAAA has seemed to have all the talent, and very little of what it takes to win when it counts. You’re right, Stephenson has had as much D1 talent as anybody, but loses to far less talent, which has been a great puzzle.

Like I said DostaDog, I hope your are right, I just think it is premature to think Valdosta is a real threat in 5A this year..although I agree with you that they have good young athletes on both sides. Like I told you I know them by name and very close relationship with several of them. So your fight is not with me, but if you think that I will agree with you that this is a better team with more ability than last years, forget it. Let’s just see what happens with Lincoln in a few hours and I hope I will come back and tell you that I am more of a believer.

Lastly, you have to be kidding to say that Lowndes is in the past along with Valdosta…I don’t even think you believe that yourself, so I will not indulge that comment other than saying everything is technically “in the past”, but there is yesterday (Lowndes) and last week (Valdosta).

As a Dekalb County resident and an observer of region 2-AAAAA, I would have to agree with those that are saying 2-AAAAA is not the SEC of Georgia highschool football. I believe that 2-AAAAA is tough but who can say that any region is the toughest. However, 2-AAAAA has become quite formidable and will be that way for a while now. They have potential to be dominant but just like the other posters said , what have they done.

Some of you guys really don’t know what high school football is about; it is about producing productive athletes who can play on the next level; then bragging rights and maybe an NFL invite is where it’s counts. 2AAAAA keep on producing good athletes; so far No Gwinnett HS teams have beaten a 2AAAAA team yet this year., GwinnettDad, take a chill pill Lol.,I’ll talk to you during playoff time and see the outcome this years. Stephenson is loaded but the coaching staff hasnt changed so early playoff lost is expected. MLK might have the best offense in the state but no defense. Newnan is a year away. Maybe a 6-4 season this year.Newnan have a very very good junior class. East Coweta is the sleeper. i think they could be the number 2 seed.

@jab you keep saying they are producing d-1 talent and all this and that but look where you are.your in atlanta the city teams up there have kids that transfer to their schools to play ball they come from all over the city. you cant compare that to a tifton colquit because those are the only schools in the county and every year they work with what they have the people that grew up in their middle school programs.that is why they beat schools from up north because they have acquired team work and dont rely on the recurited talent.
