Preseason high school rankings: Let the arguin’ begin

This is a special week in Georgia high school football. It’s when fans unite under the principle that the only rankings that matter are in December, then commence to arguing over them like they actually count in the standings.

It’s part of the fun of the sport, so let’s get it started. …

First, we got two defending champs that won’t start No. 1. In one case, it’s a case of a team that lost some major figures (Chattahoochee in Class AAAA). In the other case, it’s another team that is conspicuously loaded (Eagle’s Landing Christian in A).

Brookwood, the defending champion in AAAAA, might thank 2009 Camden County for its No. 1 ranking. In 2010, Camden repeated as AAAAA champion despite only five or six returning starters.

That’s about all that Brookwood – 14-1 in 2010 – has coming back, but in a field that has no obviously better team, the Broncos take the preseason No. 1 spot in AAAAA.

Brookwood has many key losses, most notably LB Cameron Lynch, but the Broncos do return all-state RB Nick Tompkins (committed to Michigan State) and DB Zach Jackson (committed to Illinois).

Funny thing is that no national preseason ranking is touching Brookwood. Instead, Camden County, Lowndes, Colquitt County, Stephenson and especially Grayson are grabbing national recognition.

In AAAA, Chattahoochee lost similar numbers of players, but that included all-class player of the year Tim Byerly, all-state WR Kane Whitehurst and a slew of outstanding linemen that were as critical to the Hooch as Byerly himself.

Enter Tucker. Its 49-6 record over four years and handful of top recruits make the Tigers a safe pick. Same with Northside-Warner Robins at No. 2, despite the first-round 2010 exit.

In AAA and AA, Sandy Creek (state champs in 2009, 2010) and Buford (2007-10) are no-brainers. They could be even better in 2011.

In A, Clinch lost star QB Tray Dorsey but remains a large threat to repeat. ELCA got the top spot, though. Led by RB Keyante Green, ELCA has four Division I prospects in its senior and junior classes.

the best part of this season is that every one is going to improve from this week fwd. Now come the intangibles, conditioning, will, desire, injuries, depth, support and more all this will play out to make this a great year for a who participate as a fan, coach or athletic. However history is the best judge of the feature. Those programs that have been successful in recent years(l0) will have the best shot to advance to the playoffs , With as many stories to tell as there are players when the final buzzer sounds and a champion is crowned…… so lets go vikings and build on each day we have to play. Go Vikings Go!

AVikingFan, I looked and there are two motels in Snellville. There is a LaQuinta Inn on 78/Main Street West that is fairly new (3-4 years). I do see the school bus picking up kids there in the morning though. Also, Camdem Suites is back by Eastside Hospital behind the Target at 124 and Ronald Reagan Parkway. I’ve not stayed in either one but if I had a choice, I would go for the Camdem Suites. There is a small something in Loganville that you will pass on the way in if you go through Covington up 81 to 78 like we talked about. I don’t remember the name but you probably can find it on line. Nothing special either. My daughter stayed there during a church retreat and said it wasn’t anything special.

Safe travels and see you Friday!

RH100: The national rankings were not updated with a month between finalizing the list and the first games but Stone Mountain (Ga.) Stephenson took a hit in perception.
17 Stephenson Stone Mountain GA
Stock Falling: In a recent scrimmage with Tucker the offensive line looked non-existent and the quarterback play was not much better this team could slide down to No. 5 in Georgia before its first official snap.
42 Grayson Loganville GA
Stock Rising: Reports out of Loganville is that this team is coming together quickly on offense and could be a team that piles on some points.
OTHERS BEING CONSIDERED:Powder Springs (Ga.) McEachern

@RealisticEPFan…Don’t take it personal. Last year I had 4 out of 5. i can’t help it if i am a pure fan of the game. I just pay attention that’s all. i don’t have a bunch of favorites or hate on any team. i have contacts and I do research. When you get paid for doing something you love it is not work, just a joy everyday. Take Care.

I agree with Shawn. Buck calls the same plays from the early 90’s. Scary plays with everybody bunched in at the line of scrimmage. Too much talent to be having these seasons we have had the past few years with the exception of 2009. Its time for some new blood. He has ran the younger guys off that have come back to the program to help out, and which was stated earlier, there have been sooooooooo many talented kids that left the program to go to MLK, because they are building a program of winning there. Its really sad actually. Before kids would never leave SWD for another school. This season is gona be really rough, especially the Tucker game, so maybe this season will bring upon change. With the talent that has graced SWD, we should have atleat 5 state titles. But no matter how fast and big your RB is, you cant run with 10 and 11 people in the box. Whats the use in having a 6′8 tight end, if you dont throw him the ball. So i mean, its time for a change.

Region 8-AAA, thought I would do a little fact checking. The only time that I can find in the last 4 years that Buford requested a move was a lateral move in January 2008. They requested a move to region 8-AA. The motion was denied. Maybe you have some different information.

Todd,
Just wondering your thought process for leaving Marist out of the top ten. Your betting against a program that has made it to the playoffs in each of the last 28 consecutive years (maybe even more now). How do you think there are ten teams more deserving than the most consistent team in the state?

Looking forward to the battle between Lowndes & South Gwinnett (aka the University of Snellville). I’m glad the game is in Snellville this year-going down to Valdosta & back after last years game was too much. Glad to see the cast is pretty much back-noticed Brookwood Mom has not checked in. Man people need to get there facts straight b4 they blog about things they know nothing about. I don’t know when 2 players counted as “A LOT” but I guess in this day and age it does. And thats how many players transfered to MLK. The 6′ 8″ TE only made the Top 20 in the county in receiving and tied for third in the county in TD receptions with 8. Don’t know how he did that, “not having the ball thrown to him.” And that’ss with pass happy MLK and Cedar Grove being counted in the county stats. Check your stats http://www.dekalb.k12.ga.us/www/documents/athletics/football/stats/final-(2010).pdf
2009 team 10-2 avg 32.4 ppg reg season; 2010 team 8-3 avg 30 ppg regular season; damn what a drop off. You would know these things if you were a true SWD Fan. Doubt if you must but I bet SWD and old Buck suprise some people this year.

glennville will be no cupcake but they are not one of the elite teams in ohio. dont put to much into what happens in that game for camden. just like the teams from florida camden played last year. you guys were knocked out by hillgrove, whom on paper didnt stack up to either of the fl teams camden played last year. camden will be good this year, i am not saying that but glennville is not the elite team ini ohio. lowndes wd beat glennville i am sure also. def not a lollipop team and camden will have to show up to win though. i did quite a bit of research on them.

@trojan94 yea we got a Cam Newton #14 125yds rushing and over a 100 passing last time we played in carrolton. We play with home grown kids who live in Burke County, the closet High school to us is about 30 miles away, no players transferring unlike every other school in the top 10. We dont spend millions of dollars on our field so every good player within 100 miles will play for us. We also have a coach who schedules to play the best teams in the state. By the way I dont see a AAAAA power house on your schedule. We will see but this year the playoffs come through Burke County.

@Just Wondering: Why didn’t Todd rank Marist in AAAA? While these preseason rankings are (1) irrelevant given we have a playoff system and (2) often inaccurate given this is high school with high turn over each year and growing young men, I am sure Todd had good reasons, for example:

1. Marist just has not shown the ability year after year to win consistently. 28 straight years in the playoffs is a good start, but what’s going to happen the next 28 years?

2. Marist only has 2 pre-season all-state players — no team has more, and only 3 other teams have as many. As we all know, Marist usually starts the year with 6 or 7 all-state players, so this is obviously a down year.

3. Marist returns about 6 of its starters on offense and about 5-6 on defense. Marist is returning all 3 of its starting triple-option running backs from last year. Having so many returning players from a playoff team can’t be a good sign. Given that Tucker is the top ranked team, you clearly need to have fewer returners to get a ranking.

4. Marist has a new quarterback, and you can’t be ranked in the top 10 if you have a new quarterback, especially in an offense based on a ground attack. (Please ignore Tucker.)

5. Marist coaches lack the experience to guide a team through what must be a rebuilding year. Coach Chadwick only has been Marist’s head coach for 27 seasons, winning 290 games and 85% of his games. Maybe after this year, he’ll get the hang of it.

6. Marist coaches are all washed up, as their success is all in the past. I mean, Coach Chadwick was named top AAAA coach for the last decade, his team last won the state championship in 2003 and made the finals in 2006 and 2008. See, all in the past.

7. In a close game, Marist’s does not have a good enough kicker to win. Sure, the team’s nationally ranked kicker (with a full-ride to Florida next year) made a 59-year field goal to win a game last year, but what if the team needs him to make a 60-yard field goal — what then?

8. Marist is held back by the lack of any home field advantage — you know, empty home stadium, with quiet, unsupportive fans. Hard to overcome the apathy at Marist.

9. Recuriting — unlike public schools, of course, Marist actively recruits kids each and every year. This constant influx of D-1 studs — which make up the bulk of Marist’s line-up year after year, of course — ruins team chemistry and was bound to catch up with Marist sooner or later. If only Marist just would be like the public schools, and stick with the kids who naturally move into their district, year after year, all would be well.

10. OR . . . If Todd does not rank Marist, then idiots like me will post, and the AJC will get “hits.” Then other idiots will post to criticize Marist, and the AJC will get more “hits.” With more “hits,” Todd looks good to his bosses. Nah, this can’t be it — I’ll stick with Nos. 1-9 above!

Todd, do appreciate the effort, really. Marist will try to prove on the field this year that you made a mistake. Our boys know they need to earn respect every day, every year — in football and in life.

Nice to see everyone getting worked up over the preseason rankings, as they are always so reliable. I don’t recall seeing Chattahoochee ranked in preseason last year, and actually Hooch wasn’t even predicted to make the playoffs!!

I hope that I’m wrong, but I don’t believe that Hooch will end the year ranked #6. Too many players to replace from last year.

Still too early to tell, but after the scrimmage with Milton, looks like the defense will need to make some improvements. Need to work on more tackling drills. A good OL will cause some problems for Hooch. Offense should be okay. Will score some points! Gonna miss the strong kickoffs. Last year the other teams had to drive at least 80 yds every series. Solid FG kicker though.

I’m ready for football now, too bad Hooch has a bye the first week.

Preseason rankings are just that, Pre (before the season). Camden should do well against a weak 5A, but as Lee Corso says “Hold on my friend.” If the better competition, not Savannah, play the Wing T, we’ll see how Herron adjusts which in past years has been very discouraging. As long as Camden can run the gate is wide open. We’ll see how they look in a couple of weeks on ESPN. Hopefully Herron comes back strong since being embarrassed last year on ESPN by STA. If the teams have any since, they’ll stack the box and force them to pass from the Wing T. But we’ll see, let the season began….GO CAMDEN!

@Prognosticator…Thanks for that information. I asked my son, but he didn’t know the kids name. If he played ninth grade, he should be a sophomore. This kid should be a runningback, especially if they are not deep at that position. I would love to know what they are thinking. If you get anymore information please let me know. It would be a shame to hold that kind of talent back for whatever crazy reasoning.

@Thoroughbred…Switching kids can be a blessing or a curse because it becomes another learning process for a kid and can cause frustration if that kid is not enthusiastic about that new position. I have seen it work sometimes, but most times it doesn’t. Like I told Prognosticator, hope they know what they are doing, but don’t punish a kid for being a good athlete.

These are the teams under rated or under exposed to be afraid of this year regardless of class or region:

Tucker
Collin Hills
Clinch County
Kell
Stephenson
Creekside
Marist
Cairo
Charlton County
Our Lady of Mercy
Grayson
Cedar Grove

Glenville will give Camden fits. Glenville is a straight Hood Team with great leadership and direction. Those kids are hungry. Coach Ginn (son played at OSU and Dolphins) does a great job with those kids with regards to getting them in schools. similar to Stephenson but a better track record in the playoffs. This will be a great measure to see how Brice Ramsey stacks up. Lets see if he truly is ready for prime time or just the ANNOINTED one. Is that game on TV. Would love to watch it. I have a kid very close to me at OSU (55) that played at Glenville.

Glennville vs. Camden
I disagree that speed is a problem for Camden. Camden can match up with more than the majority of teams that have speed. Coaching is the problem. In all of Camden lost games, the lack of any adjustment on the field is what has and will always cost Camden, and the correct adjustment by the opponent is why Camden has all of their losses. Herron will run the Wing T until it snows, whether it’s 5 in the box or 11 in the box, plain and simple. Camden can’t pass and when they do Herron immediately goes back to the Wing T. Camden has severe issues with either an efficient passing quarterback or a good Spread offense. Lack of adjustment on one side and correct adjustment on the other. Go back to the Hillgrove, STA, Dacula, Lowndes, etc…

So if necessary adjustments are made for Camden they won’t have a problem with anyone. But if Herron comes out playing checkers against a chess player, Camden might as well warm up the busses.

True Fan

A perfect game to disprove the speed vs Camden is the Camden/Miami Central game. Miami Central had way way more speed than Camden, the fastest team Camden has EVER played. But Miami Central couldn’t stop Herron’s Wing T. Herron would hit tight end every blue moon and go back to the Wing T. Last years Miami Central team could have gone up against anyone in the nation in the SPEED Department, but they were undisciplined. STA was the total opposite of Miami Central, speed in certain areas, but disciplined on the field, executed, and adjusted. Less than 5 minutes to go in the 1st half, STA 21 Camden 7, STA qb during same time frame 299yds passing 3TD.

So I hope adjustments are made and Camden can grab another title

Grayson game …should have, won but didnt, collins hill, should have , but didnt. If you ask me did we have the better team? i think we did yes, i think we had just as good or better team back in 09 when yall beat us. i wish every time we played camden it was on a nuetral field. but my point here is that yall have been just as dominant the last sveral years as lowndes and its football. most coahces/teams would love to accomplish what lowndes and camden have the past 8 years, so man lighten up on herron. the man knows football. the wing t has come out on top more times than not and guess what , its an offense that can keep other teams offenses off the field.

@BOOM@EP…I never pay much attention to scrimmages, mainly because teams put in underclassmen and really do not like to show their main offense to opposing teams. I can name so many teams that just went through the motions to get a game under their belt. There are some teams that don’t have scrimmages at all. Not that i agree with it, but they just feel like they do not want to risk the health of their players. Understandable. I personally believe that teams that have early byes should play at least two scrimmage games, especially if you have a young team. Just my opinion. I was a coach once upon a time. I just believe there will be some upsets this year and there are a lot of dangerous teams out there with nothing to lose. Watch out and don’t take any team likely.

If Miami Central’s speed wasn’t a problem for Camden, how did MC manage to score 42 points? Only two teams were able to do that in 2010. Both of them had GREAT speed at the skilled positions.Hillgrove’s speed and quickness caused numerous missed tackles on defense. The same way against STA, it was skilled position speed that allowed them to jump out to the big lead! Yes, there were some coaching errors, and Herron admitted such……..I don’t always agree with Coach Herron’s tactics, but he’s brought home the title 3 of the last 8 years! Before 2003, the only football title for Camden County was from the class A, 1960 Ralph J. Bunche team……… I played on several CCHS teams who were talented enough to go deep into the playoffs, but we never even made the playoffs! So as much as I might disagree with the coaching at times, you can’t argue with the results!

Also, Clarke Central took EP lightly in the playoffs and we all know what happened with that game. I think it is way too early to make calls on most teams. There are way too many factors that go into making a great team to forcast how one will preform before they are truly tested.
