Georgia Tech’s new basketball coach made quite the first impression on the Yellow Jackets’ No. 1 recruit.

Brian Gregory called Milton High’s Julian Royal within an hour after being introduced as Tech’s new coach on Monday, and then rushed over for an in-home visit with the 6-foot-8 forward for more than two hours on Tuesday night.

“I think that’s big time,” said Royal’s father, Charles Royal, told the AJC. “Actions speak louder than words, and Coach Gregory’s actions have really spoken loudly to us. We couldn’t stop thanking the man enough for coming over because we know he has been extremely busy over the last couple of days.”

During Tuesday night’s conversation, Gregory made it clear several times that he wished for Royal to remain with Tech under the new coaching staff. Ex-coach Paul Hewitt convinced Royal to sign with Tech over archrival UGA in the early period last November.

“Coach Gregory seemed very genuine with his interest in Julian and with all of his answers to our questions,” the elder Royal said. “We aren’t looking for any special treatment or special favors. All along, we’ve just wanted to make sure that Julian fits in with the new coach and his system. After tonight, it appears like it would be a good match to me.”

The money question: Will Royal remain with Georgia Tech under Gregory?

“Right now, I don’t see any reason for Julian to change his mind about the school; I think Julian wants to kind of sleep on everything and talk to Coach Gregory some more over the phone this week,” the elder Royal said.

“Both sides agreed that it’s tough to ‘microwave’ four years worth of recruiting by Coach Hewitt. You can’t make up for that in a couple of hours. However, with that said, it’s still Georgia Tech, it’s still a great education, and it’s still ACC basketball.

“They are going to continue to talk, and I would think Julian will make a decision within the next couple of days or something like that.”

The elder Royal also revealed that family has not discussed any alternatives. “We’ve haven’t talked about or contacted any other schools since Hewitt was released [on March 12]. Julian has always wanted it to work out for him at Georgia Tech, as have we.”

Royal was the leading scorer for Milton High, which played for the state championship three years in a row in Georgia’s largest classification, winning in 2010. This year’s squad had six players who have been offered or signed major-college scholarships, including point guard Shannon Scott (signed with Ohio State), who will play in the McDonald’s All-America Game on Wednesday night on ESPN.

Royal and his entire family seem to be down to earth and people with class. Proud that CBG called him and met with him and the family quickly. That too was the smart and classy thing to do. Julian and his family have a decision to make and must make what they feel like will be the best decision for him. I hope and would love to see him play for the jackets. I know there has been alot said of the hire of CBG, but feel like this program will turn around and be closer to what it should be even next year if everyone stays and a talent like Royal comes on board. Best of luck to coach Brian Gregory and Julian Royal, whatever his decision is. Hope he sticks with GT.

Brian WHO? I am surprised that Julian Royal recognized this “no name” when he knocked on his door. They probably thought Coach Greg Brian or whomever was the pizza delivery guy. WHY would Julian want to play on a sinkin’ stinkin’ ship at GT?

Julian, diss the nerds and play for the FACE OF GEORGIA BASKETBALL a.k.a Mark Fox.

Be part of the “Dream Team” with Kentavious Caldwell. Wooooof!

Kid has to do what is best for him. I hope by him staying with Georgia TECH that means he really is choosing to be a GIT graduate and athlete. Maybe he is a Jacket fan first. Just make the choice that seems to fit your style of play or a coach that can help your game Mr. Royal.

Welcome Julian, its a great day a TECH when we can get a class guy like you, when UGA talks about a recruit the word education never, ever comes up, and if you read the first 4 blogs from this store you can really see what UGA fans are made of, its a SAD, SAD day for that place in Athens to be the state school.

Sounds like the Dad will make the decision instead of the player. Whatever. At this point, I certainly would not call Royal a sure bet to play for GT.

Royal will be playin for the Dawgs next year. And UGA will be playing in the final four. Why would Julian want to play for a team and a school that is way worse than a sinking ship? More like a ship already at the bottom of the ocean not worth salvaging.

Just the beginning folks! Shumpert will stay and a certain Tenn recruit may show up soon. Also, maybe bringing some Midwest guys. With the maturation of ex-doggie, Daniel Miller, next season is looking good! We will be there every game. Jackets will outdraw the Hawks in Philips especially if beer is for sale!

For Royal, it will come down to whether he wants to be on a sinking ship (GT) or a sailing one (UGA). Perhaps staying in downtown Atlanta is all he cares about. BUT, if he cares about winning he won’t go to GT. Look at Gregory’s record at Dayton – very, very unimpressive. Mark Fox is an infinitely better coach and will prepare Julian for the NBA. UGA takes care of its own. GT does not. Make a smart decision Royal family – not one you will live to regret.

Let’s be honest about Gregory – he was the only guy Tech could afford. Nobody has come after this guy for a high-major job because he is not a high-major coach. Tech was on a budget and they had to find someone who would take the package. Is that where you want your son playing for the next however many years? For the guy who nobody else wanted?

Drive by dawg,

It’s people like you who make me spill my coffee in the mornings. What part of Georgia’s program is sailing? Drifting is a better word. A first round knock out, some unimpressive wins, and some even more unimpressive losses. And last time I checked, Gregory has a better record at Dayton (.654) then Fox does at UGA (.555). Let Fox get over .500 in the SEC before you call it sailing.

That being said, I’m glad to hear that Julian is planning on staying. We have the talent to compete with the upper echelon of the ACC (easy for people to forget how this past team hammered the same UNC team that went to the Elite-8), especially if Sump decides to come back (there’s no reason for him not to, at this point). Just keep your head straight and finish your senior year, and stay in shape for next November.

When GT and UGa both have good coaches in the top sports, we can go at it for the recruits, and have a great rivalry. That’s what’s fun. The “Y’all suk” stuff…? Just idiotic.

I find it more than a little amusing that uga fans think that Mr. Royal and his family would turn to the anonymous blogs of fans on the newpaper for direction. He would be better off with a Magic 8 Ball. If anyone is indeed looking toward what is posted here for direction, I truly hope they are heading east of Atlanta as their decision making is not up to Tech Standards.

If Shumpert stays too, Gregory could have a good first season.

If these two programs can keep Ga talent in-state, the sky is the limit.

I’m a Dawg fan and I’m think TECH has a great hire. I hope the young man goes where he is comfortable and I see no reason for him to change his mind. There are PLENTY enough b’ball recruits in Georgia for both TECH and UGA to be powerhouses. As far as the comments of why are there more UGA posters on a TECH blog than TECH posters – that is laughable. The UGA blogs instantly fill up with that part of the TECH fan base that are idiot trolls, many of whom are often the first posters.

There is an element of both fan bases that is embarrassing to the majority.

Wow, you UGA guys love to rewrite history. Lemme give you a little lesson- Not many people had heard of Mark Fox before he came to UGA, either. And frankly, he hasn’t done a whole lot at UGA to make me think he’s ever going to get to the Final Four. Until he’s actually accomplished something, your attempts to diss our hire are ludicrous.

People remember these are 18 year old kids and too many of you are busy knocking them down instead of lifting them up. The good natured ribbing due to school rivalries are ok. Voicing your displeasure with a coach’s game plan or a player’s skills is fine. But, can’t we do in a constructive way? It is the personal and immature posting attacking people (the kids, the parents and the coach) that are most disturbing. Would you want your kid to read some of these comments? Consider that before you write you next post with personal and demeaning attacks.

Gregory meeting with Royal and his family immediately is exactly what I would expect from him. You guys got a GREAT coach! There was a vocal minority at DAYTON who was displeased with him, but the guy did an excellant job. If DAYTON didn’t have our starting PG transfer in June a couple of years ago to play for his hometown school (ILLINOIS) and if Chris Wright doesn’t break his foot his freshman year DAYTON would have gone to 5 NCAA tourney’s in 8 years. BG was a little snake bitten, otherwise his numbers would have been far more impressive. Trust me, your program is on it’s way up with him at the helm. He is great with recruits and is a tireless worker. You guys are going to be happy

The Royals didn’t change this week. They are the same people they were earlier in the week.
