Tennessee basketball recruit Kevin Ware confirmed with the AJC on Monday afternoon that he is still requesting a scholarship release from the Volunteers, despite the hiring of a new coach at the SEC school.

The 6-foot-4 guard from Rockdale County High School says it’s nothing personal against Tennessee’s new coach, Cuonzo Martin. In fact, Ware has left open the possibility of playing under Martin at Tennessee.

Ware, as he has maintained all along, simply wants a release to re-open the recruiting process. He wants to make sure he’s a good fit with his college coach and vice versa. Ware has been committed to Tennessee since his sophomore year, citing his close friendship with ex-coach Bruce Pearl as a primary factor.

“Yes I am,” Ware said in a text message when asked if he was still requesting his release after Martin’s hiring.

Ware said Tennessee’s new coach tried to reach out to him on Monday morning but his phone was off. Ware called the coach back and left a message. Ware said he expected a conversation between the two on Monday night or Tuesday.

“He’s a good guy from what I’m hearing … good reputation, good background,” Ware said.

With regards to Ware’s request to be released — which was made before Pearl was fired, Ware said it is his understanding that Tennessee officials want him to meet with the new coach before further addressing the situation.

Ware, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 56 basketball prospect by Rivals, said he hasn’t had any contact with other colleges. “I’m basically interested in anybody that’s interested in me,” Ware said.

He has heard rumors of interest from Louisville, Kansas, UCLA, Florida State, Kansas State, Georgetown, Georgia Tech and UGA, among others. Ware averaged 19 points and 9 assists while leading Rockdale County to its first appearance in the state championship game since 1987.

What’s your prediction? Will Ware stick with the Vols after meeting Martin or go elsewhere? Please post your comments below.

As a former Rockdale County student, I would love to see K Ware join me in Athens as a Dawg and keep this hoop ship going in the right direction, unlike a certain other school in Georgia…

Mr. Ware,

Come to Georgia and be a part of what Mark Fox is creating! There is going to be some excellent talent around you the next 2-4 years, but we need more guards! Check the roster and our recruiting class!

Only way UT doesn’t release him from his scholarship is if they think is going to UGA, but I think it will be between UofL UCLA and KU

UT should release the kid from his LOI. It’s the right thing to do, which makes me think they won’t do it.

If they do release him, it will be a stipulation that he can not sign with another SEC school, so UGA will not be a question, same for Royal if released he will not be able to sign with any other ACC school, so NC State would be off his list. So Royal to UGA, and Ware to GT…

The situation demands that he be given the freedom to make another choice. Where he chooses to go should be a matter of his own personal preference. UT should not hold a gun to his head about where he goes. The very stable situation at UGA should make him feel good about his future

Did they hold a gun to his head? One thing I have learned from watching the goings on with college sports is that too many time, too many people cast judgement before thefacts are in.

“For Real” is right. UT ain’t gonna release him. He’s stuck with UT whether he likes it or not. Tech is also playing hardball with Royal. If I was Royal, I would tell Tech that I will meet with the new coach AFTER you give me a release. Otherwise no deal. If Tech doesn’t budge, one can imagine the press that would generate. Could hurt Tech’s recruiting for a long time.

Georgia does not need him. He can’t shoot and caused Rockdale to lose to Miller Grove in the state championship game becasue he could take the physical play and finish in a crowd.

This is UGA point guard of the future,he made a decision early and knows where his heart is now, this is a young man that just wants to play with his home state ,but whatever decison he makes no one should make him feel bad,he is a young man trying to to make a big tough decison,if anything everyone should be supportive and have him in your prayers, here ’s this fan just hoping he ends up at UGA,he is a perfect fit and I think he knows that now.

Ware has asked for a release from UT and it should be granted. If given his release he should be allowed to go wherever he wishes. UGA did that with Daniel Miller after firing their coach.
Royal has not asked for his release from GT, but if he asks it should be granted and GT should let him go wherever he wishes. However, if Royal is given his release and he wants to go to another ACC school he will have to pay his own way the first year because of conference rules. Marcus Thornton signed with Clemson before Oliver Purnell left and was given a release – one of the reasons he signed with UGA rather than GT was because he would not have been on scholarship for a year at an ACC school.

Ware will go elsewhere. UT’s AD must go. If the AD stays, UT will never regain what Bruce Pearl and Phil Fulmer built. Bruce will beat UT many times in the years ahead.

The smart play for UT is to set him free. If not, you have created a mountain of ill-will among future players and those players parents. You can’t win this one UT!

UT will release him if he asks for the release after the meeting with the new coach. They have done so in the past. Tennessee will not release him to play for an SEC team as per SEC rules.

GT will release Royal and/or Parks if they request the release after meeting the coach. In the past GT has said the release is to non-conference schools only. Is this an ACC rule?

I think that they need to give Mr Hamilton his release. He has no control over his coaches. Fire him!!!! I think that they should give Ware his release. But he should of never committed to Tennessee as early as he did. Other players beware of Tennessee-Do not commit to Tennesee until they clean up their act.

Anyone who thinks Kevin is going to UGA is delusional!!!!! UGA’s style would not fit his game either. Mark Fox should be targeting another talented Rockdale County Guard Bernard Thompson. If you are a Kevin Ware fan start visioning him in a Louisville uniform!!!!
